Any other day on any other month, he could ignore Peter’s prattling, zone in on work until the other man bores himself, makes some smart-ass comment about him being the only un-fun Spider-Man and leave Miguel to sweet, merciful silence.

Today? He can’t. It’s like his brain has somehow melted out of his skull cavity, trying to do ten-thousand things at once for the half-chance of going home early, planning an altar when he barely remembers how to, what he’ll have to cook, drowning itself in unbidden self-flagellation, over-heated and sluggish like a shitty 2000’s CPU.

Goddamnit, he’s Miguel Shocking O’Hara, vigilante, brilliant scientist, and leader of an interdimensional Spider-Society! He’s better than this. Better than feeling suffocated by Peter’s mere presence, better than the urge to scream at him (It’s not even deserved this time!), better than falling apart at the seams just because of one stupid holiday-

He forces his voice to remain steady, trying not to sound as frayed at he is, trying to unclench his hands and shoulders and jaw. “Don’t wait up for me. It’s just- It’s not important.”

If he gets any more saccharine words or attempts at ‘putting him at ease’ or that horrible, awful concern, he’s going to actually lose it.
