What was going through Isabela's mind?

She knew the answer to that. It was the coup. And all the bloodshed and horror that had come with it.

There had been so much blood and screaming. The smell of gunpowder. Her father, paler than she'd ever seen him, even that time he'd accidentally knocked into a beehive. Her mother hadn't been there to heal them. To heal any of them. And Isabela had been so useless, cowering in a corner with Dolores until they'd managed to escape. She hadn't been brave.

Isabela always thought that those memories were buried, until something like this happened.

And then, it was all she could think about. How she hadn't been brave. And how she'd promised herself she would learn more, do more, so if it every happened again, she would be prepared. But, she never had.

Isabela couldn't say that, though. But, it was all she knew. Isabela was not a liar by nature. (Most of her lies were also to herself.)

So--she said a version of the truth.

"Well, truthfully? I was thinking of Avalor and everything that had happened there. I guess--it just snapped me into action. My family survived the coup because of the kindness of others. And I couldn't just stand by and let someone else go through their worst day alone. As for training, well, my mother Julieta Madrigal is a kitchen witch who is a very powerful healer, so I suppose I learned a little from her. And my uncle Félix. He's a certified nurse. I am lucky to live in a house full of healers."
