hi nonnie! thank you! but i’m never sure how to answer questions like that because… i just make them?? wdym “how” /lh 😭 if you want cool free resources, check flaticon website. you can download png files with no background from there. use a software that lets you edit images and just… play around with stacking the pattern horizontally. i’m sure any graphic app should let you fill it with a gradient of your choice. that’s all, i guess 🩷 (says ‘that’s all’ and then spams the tags, the usual)

Here’s a breakdown of my animation.

Once I created the cave set in 3D, I retextured all of the blocks to be a wireframe so I could more easily keep the proportions correct as the camera moved through the scene. I began with a simple box person body. Not only did this help me make sure the proportions were correct but the different angles and sides of the character helped me eventually keep the characters features in the right places later. It’s very rough, but it was a good indication that I was on the right track.

Then began the tedious process of refining the animation. I did a new pass over the original animation with all the features of the character. It’s more detailed, but it’s just as rough in a lot of ways. I wasn’t trying to ensure elements were consistent frame to frame, so you can see a lot of the linework is very wobbly and inconsistent.

Once that was done I went back and did a cleanup phase. This helped smooth out all those inconsistencies and I worked on making sure the animation was smooth and flowed nicely. This became the basis for the final inks and color.

When I’d gotten far enough into working on the scene I went back to the 3D model and rendered it out in multiple passes. I did a flat lighting pass which you see here, and then a shadow pass. I combined the two in Premiere, added some color adjustments and then rendered it out to be used as the background for the final product.

I imported the finished rendered background into Procreate Dreams and began the final coloring. I’d already previously decided on the desaturated colors that would make them fit in this cave environment, so coloring was actually a breeze.

The final two elements that really brought it all together was a shadow layer and a glow layer for the torch. The shadow layer was tricky, but it definitely helps make it seem like the character is interacting with the environment.

As previously mentioned I thought I was going to import this into Procreate and animate it there since I like the Animation Assist tool in Procreate more than I do with how Dreams works. But ultimately because so much of this animation was tied to the movement of the camera I ended up animating ALL of this in Procreate Dream.

Victorian intimacy and how they viewed sex is such a fascinating thing because, despite how much they praised purity and virtue and virginity, there is so much Victorian correspondence (letters and diaries) full of erotic descriptions detailing their sex lives. T_T it’s so fun….. those who could afford prostitutes (the wealthy or upper middle class) would’ve had sexual experience come marriage, but women were expected to remain virgin until their wedding night, and sex was supposed to be just for the sake of procreation. Obviously there are so many historical accounts that show otherwise hehe. Also also!!! Contraception and any mention of it was seen as a taboo subject back then,,, so essentially what I’m getting at is you are so getting knocked up by your husband at some point.

I just love the idea of you and Skully sending letters to each other and writing the steamiest of poetry,,, all of it so erotic but also so sweet….. OTL yes, it’s risqué (for the time) and would probably make a nun faint, but then you can feel how in love the both of you are. You’re so obsessed with one another. Think Queen Victoria’s infamous diary entries regarding her lover Prince Albert. I still can’t believe they supposedly installed a button in their vacation home (?? I think) that allowed them to have complete privacy and not be disturbed by any servants. AAAAAAA OTL this with King (of Halloween) Skully and his darling…… there is a clear Vision.

Hehe the idea of Skully bringing you to the cemetery where his mother rests so that you can meet her. Something something it ends with you clinging to the headstone while he rucks your skirts up and fucks into you from behind, and you’re just babbling about how pleased you are to meet Mrs. Graves and you hope she approves of you and you promise to make her son very happy and !!!! And Skully’s happily rambling about how perfect you are and how much he loves you to his mother,,, orz so debauched,,, forget the wedding night. Give you and Skully one night in the cemetery and you’re leaving there no longer virgins. >:)

But can you really blame each other? You can’t keep your hands to yourself hehe.

It took you a long time to say yes to going out with Logan.

And it wasn’t simply a case of you ‘playing hard to get’. You have no desire to be a fling. Sure, you recognize that objectively, he is hot! And you think to yourself, maybe you’d give him a shot if he didn’t just want to sleep with you.

So, for months, he pines. And it’s a rather new experience, he’s used to people just throwing themselves at him after a few flirty conversations, but it takes almost four months for you to even agree to go out with him.

When you do, he makes sure to put in his best effort—You two go out to a really nice dinner, and then you go on this long drive to a cliff side, and you lean against his motorcycle, holding hands as you look to the stars.

His heart thumps as your thumb gently rubs against his knuckles.

So the two of you date—

You kiss, you eat lunch together, you spend long nights with your hands running through his hair, reading to him.

But you don’t sleep with him.

He thinks maybe it’s a religious thing or maybe some weird fetish, like you think waiting will make it even better. But he doesn’t ask you about it, because he remembers how long it took you to go out with him, so he keeps it to himself.

Logan isn’t your first boyfriend, so you know that the people you’re with are owed an explanation. And you brace yourself—If he isn’t willing to listen to you on this, you’re ready to walk away.

You sit up so you can be looking at him—It’s rather intimate.

“I’m Asexual.” You answer.

A beat.

“A sexual what?”

You laugh a little, mostly because you think it’s silly, especially considering Logan isn’t straight (you see how he’s looked at Scott).

“No, Asexual—It means I experience little to no sexual attraction,” You answer, and he tilts his head.

He’s committed a lot of time to you already. The explanation sort of scares him, and he’s ready to run away but he stays put, not wanting you to think he can’t handle whatever it is you’ve just thrown at him—But he was born in the early 1800’s. Have a bit of grace for the man.

“Okay, What does that mean, though?” He asks, and you’re grateful he hasn’t broken up with you yet.

“So, I.. I really like you. I mean—I love you, Logan.” You confess, “But sex just.. isn’t something I need, especially not often. I get horny, It’s just.. Sex is different for me. I like making out with you, kissing you, touching you—and there might be times where I do want to have sex with you, probably to show my affection and grow closer to you—Sex isn’t procreation or pure pleasure to me, it’s something that I only like to do every once in a while and I do it as a way to get closer to whoever I love. Does that make sense?”

Logan nods. It does make sense—Sex isn’t your thing. And he knows historically, he’s been passed around by the other x-men like a blunt, but in dating you for a while, since you two haven’t slept together, he’s much more okay with that being more rare.

Sure, you’re both attracted to each other, and like you said, making out is really nice, but..

“Yeah.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“Well, I just..” he takes your hands in his, trying to convey what it is he wants to communicate. “We’re more than just dating. At least to me. No one’s ever been in my corner like you, and.. As Alphas grow older they start to feel a natural urge, just like a lot of people. They start to wonder what they’ll leave behind, who will take care of them when they’re older. They’ll never be frail or pathetic like a lot of us regular human get as they age, because by their nature they will never be frail much less fucking pathetic, but even their domanice over reality can’t stop the hands of time, not forever. As they go from beefy college studs to manly muscle daddies they long for something more than the betas, twinks and bimbos. They start to long for a lil bro.

To clarify I should mention I’m not talking about a biological brother. Due to the nature of Alphas there’s rarely ever more than one in a family, especially in a single generation. Lil bros are the way Alphas make more Alphas, the way they… procreate. That probably surprises you, since Alphas are absolute studs that have sex all the time. The thing is that, while the sons of Alphas have a higher chance to become Alphas than regular people, there’s no guarantee. Whatever makes Alphas the dominant manly men they are isn’t truly hereditary. If it was, we'd have billions of Alphas in the world in just a few generations. So, instead of hoping one of their kids will end up as an Alpha like them, older Alphas seek out newly awakened Alphas. Younger studs who have just discovered their dominant nature and need guidance, need a big bro to show them the ropes and help them be the best Alphas they can be. Lil bros and big bros often act like true brothers, or even father and son, and don’t suffer from the same issues that most Alphas do when they spend time together. Sometimes big bros and lil bros even share betas. Let me tell you, getting fucked by two Alphas at once… is indescribable.

I think the biggest thing is to just take things slow -- digital art feels different than drawing traditionally, and it's SUPER easy to get overwhelmed by the billions of cool features that the digital world offers. (I say, as someone who spends a lot of time downloading cool brushes and textures...and then never using them ever.) there is a ton of really cool stuff you can do digitally, but because there's so much, I think it's really important to take time to figure out what is and isn't working for you. spend some time doodling without any intent to do a finished piece, figure out how you like to hold (or not hold) your tablet, what keyboard shortcuts you end up using a lot (and therefore might want to map to your pen/tablet buttons for quicker use)...that kind of thing!

everyone's workflow and preferred program and style are different, so it's hard to give hard-and-fast general advice. but the things that I think of as the essentials for learning digital art programs, and what I think of as a good order to focus on learning them in (although YMMV, especially depending on what kind of art you're doing):

brush customization (e.g. flow, opacity, softness)

layers and layer masks

selections and transformations (e.g. scale, rotate, flip horizontal/vertical, skew) (skew is underrated and I will die on that hill)

blending modes (e.g. multiply, screen)

adjustments/adjustment layers (e.g. hue/saturation, curves)

and I think most stuff after that is gravy! often very good gravy though! but yeah, as overall advice I recommend just taking things one little bit at a time, spending some time just drawing and messing around with each feature and what you can do with it. whether or not you end up incorporating any of it into your workflow, it's always good to try things out and just see how they feel! :D

and just so there is at least a little more concrete helpfulness in here, here's a few more specific things that I think are super important to keep in mind!

use! your! tablet/pen buttons! I mentioned this earlier, but they are extremely useful for keyboard shortcuts that you use often! most programs will also let you create new shortcuts for other things -- personally, I use the magic wand tool to fill in big color blocks a lot, so I made shortcuts for 'expand selection' and 'fill' and then mapped them to my tablet buttons.

flop your work horizontally often! when you're working on something, you get used to the way it looks, so seeing it mirrored is a quick way to see it with fresh eyes! in my experience, it often feels like this:

(a common thing is to find that everything is sort of 'leaning' too much one way, which is where skew really comes in handy!) (seriously, I love skew, it is my savior)

if you're working with color, keep a hue/saturation adjustment layer (or a layer filled with black or white and set to Color) on top and toggle it on occasionally to check your values! a lot of people who know a lot more about color than me (and are better at putting it into words) have written about why values are so important, so all I'll say is that the rule of thumb is that your image should still be readable in greyscale:

there are some exceptions and grey areas (do ho ho), but it's a good general rule to keep in mind! (some programs also have a colorblind mode, so you can check to see how your work will look to someone with colorblindness!)

Hey there! (*waves*) Thank you so much for the love <3 I'd be happy to share some insights on the topics you mentioned! (Sorry that it took a while.)

I think I’ve been drawing for almost 20 years now (Whoa!). Honestly, I don’t even know how I made it through, but ever since I was a kid, I knew art was a necessary part of my life. Looking back now, I’m just glad I stuck with it!

This piece is like a visual timeline of my art evolution. It’s wild to think I went from those super basic kid doodles to the style I have now. Growth is real, y’all!

So the tips! (They are mainly for those hobbyist artists, since I don’t have the luck to make it as my career.)

Keep your eyes and mind open to learn from different fields. It’ll spark fresh ideas and enrich your art, but always double-check when diving into unfamiliar territory.

Find tutorials that vibe with you, and collect references IRL.

Use primary sources to avoid distorted or AI-altered refs.

Take your own photos as ref.

Use 3D websites like Sketchfab, Blender for 3D assistance, and posing apps or manikins to help with your art.

Practice consistently. Balance your time between quick sketches and more polished pieces.

Accept where you are now and improve from there. Don't let others' opinions or other artists’ activities throw you off your path.

If art’s your hobby, the goal is to have fun! No pressure to push boundaries unless you’re feeling it.

Let’s move to drawing process. I’ve been doing hand-drawn art for more than a decade, but had to fully switch to digital media after 2016. Now I usually use Procreate for sketches and lines, then use Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop for colors and adjustments.

I’m gonna share two sets of process. One is for generic character art, and the other one is for pieces influenced by environment.

So character art is like:

Do some (very) rough sketch to locate the characters → Line art

Define coloring section → Do flat basic colors, adjust the tone via gradient map, change line color

Add more details, use airbrush to shape the volume → Rendering (layer mode: multiply, linear burn)

More rendering (layer mode: screen, overlay, soft light) → Post effects

Done!

The next is art influenced by environment:

Make a color sketch to set the general tone → Line art

Flat basic colors (background & characters) → Darken the art (layer mode: multiply), add more details

Add more details and begin rendering → More rendering, lighten some parts (layer mode: screen)

More rendering, use gradient map to adjust the tone → Post effects

@juniper-clan’s Heronstar! As someone who is somewhat of a fan of history, and loves writing stuff set in historical settings, it really just hits that one specific spot. Plus, the storytelling is top-notch! The way each character is rendered is just fantastic. A compelling story with beautiful artwork set in the past— what’s not to be inspired by?

@clangenrising’s Scorchplume. Ok, this one is a bit special. It was you who dragged me into this whole thing in the first place! When I saw these posts on my dash, I was inspired to look into Clangen. And well, around twenty clans later… I loved it! Plus, the way you display your story is so unique, and adds a lot of character. Often, it can be hard to remember large clans worth of cats— but the writing-style allows each to shine, and have their personality be on display. My ADHD ass doesn’t have a hard time remembering who’s who with your clan, because each character is so clearly defined.

And last but not least, @almaraclan’s Belle! Technically, this started after I started making my backlog of posts… but I’m so enamored with the story and character design that I simply must add Belle here! Soldat kept his word, he was gentle with you, as gentle as he could be.

It hurt, more than the physical hurt it was the betrayal, the fact this was not happening willingly

You always thought your first time would be special, or at least with someone you loved but mostly it will be your choice.

“You’re so beautiful” The Man kissed you, whispered in your ears. Soldat was kind to you, he made you feel good but a part of you felt broken, and he felt something similar.

He blamed himself, if it wasn’t for him maybe you wouldn’t have to do this, maybe your life would be better. You could be free.

Soldat kissed your jaw, your neck, as he could feel his high approach, it felt wrong, but both of your bodies betrayed yourselves.

Maybe the two of you could challenge fate and take it in your own hands. That moment, even if forced, was shared just between you two. It was yours and only yours.

Soldat looked at you with kind eyes as if asking permission, you gave him a gently smile, which was enough answer for him, he leaned down and kissed you, he made sure to provide you pleasure, as the two of you reached your high, you felt full, even something so wrong felt so right.

Fate played a game with you both but in that moment, you didn’t feel betrayed, in that moment, it was just you and him.

“I’m sorry” Soldat couldn’t stop blaming himself. He didn’t look at you, lying beside you staring at the ceiling

“It’s not your fault” He wasn’t used to hearing that. After everything that happened how were you not screaming at him, cursing him or hitting him?

You looked at him as the man kept avoiding your gaze. Soldat was beautiful, you thought. There were so many questions going through your mind, what happened to him being the most prominent.

“Do you- do you think I…” You trailed off gently touching your belly. The future seemed uncertain and scary. Soldat didn’t say anything, instead he looked at your hand on your belly.

The silence of the room got disrupted when there were loud knocks on the door followed by footsteps and people coming in. Thankfully you were modestly clothed by then. Few of Pierce’s men came in notifying you that soon a doctor will arrive to check you, to see if you got pregnant.

“Soldat, come with us now.” They ordered. Soldat looked at you, saw the tears in your eyes. Part of him wanted to stay with you, but the other part felt you must hate him now, why wouldn’t you, he thought. Probably it was best to leave.

Soldat got up to leave. He looked at you one more time and you were looking back at him. What he didn’t realise was that you wanted him to stay.

All of them left the room and you were alone again. How did your life turn out to be like that? Was it your fault? Were you not a good enough daughter? Could have done something differently?

No. Suddenly all you could feel was rage. You didn’t deserve this. No matter what. You got up from the bed and started throwing whatever you could grab.

Eventually you got a hold of the glass of water which was on your bedside table and threw it hard on the floor and a tiny piece of glass cut your arm.

It was tiny, didn’t really hurt much but you felt so broke, everything added up which resulted in you sobbing on your bed. You didn’t know when you fell asleep. Losing the idea of time, you woke up hours later.

When you were given food that day, you didn’t feel like eating at all but you knew if you didn’t take care of yourself the consequence won’t be nice. You felt empty as you gulped your food down with water.

More than week passed in solitary. Your mind wandered to Soldat, wondering what he must be doing. He was not doing well either. He was sent on a mission, which he obliged like the good soldier he is but he couldn’t stop thinking about you, about the future, about the pregnancy test that was about to take place soon.

When the day came, Pierce burst into your room followed by doctors and his men. You did what they say, they tested you.

“Well daughter, in some time we’ll get to know if you are of any use” Pierce had a sickening smile on his face. You felt like throwing up, literally. And you did.

The test result - Positive.

“Now then, I’ll see you soon, after consulting our doctors and scientists. Congratulations daughter, you are gonna be a mother.” With that Pierce left your room.

Soldat was informed about the news as well. They needed more of his blood sample and run some other tests on him as well as on you to make sure you were healthy.

The next day there is another knock on your door. But no one enters without permission, which was unusual, usually the knocks were just to give you a moment, to notify then people are about to come in. But this felt different.

You opened the door to see a bloodied Soldat standing in front of you.

“Wha-“

“We are leaving. Now.”

First of all thank you! You’re very sweet. Secondly I’m gonna do my best to answer your questions coherently so bear with my rambles

For the magical girls what you see is sort of my own reference sheet. I tend to overthink my work, so I’ve been purposefully trying to keep the magical girl designs relaxed. I don’t do a lot of prep work. I draw the pose and then design the clothing on top. I usually have an idea going in, and I design around that idea. Then I’ll also have a bunch of references off to the side of both their canon costumes and other magical girl designs. This is all a long winded way of saying I don’t have reference sheets because I’m cutting character design corners for the sake of keeping this light but I can make some if people are interested.

It’s not glamorous but this is most of what the design process looks like.

Brushes okay let’s hope I can remember the details:

For lineart I’ve been using a default brush on Procreate called “Streaks” under calligraphy. This is what I use for my looser, relaxed pieces. For my more polished lineart pieces I use a brush from a pack that I bought, that for the life of me I can’t remember the artist (I’m sorry) but it’s called “Look at this!”

For coloring I use a range of brushes. Some are from the pack I mentioned earlier and some are from another pack that I got from the artist Liliyth on insta. From Procreate’s default brushes I also use Tinderbox, Spectra, Tamar, and Dry Ink (which I’ve edited a little). For the magical girl au I’ve been mainly using a brush from a pack I got from dianammarol on insta called “Drawing Brush - Opaque.”

These are my top 3 programs in my art process! Ignore the name of the app folder. It helps with MY motivation to draw lmao

1. Procreate ($12.99 as of Feb 2024)

My main drawing program! Its so easy to use and the UI is simple. What really sold me to procreate is the default brushes and the time lapse! if you’d like I made a post a while back on the brushes i use for lineart! Sooooo worth the investment honestly. also you can animate on it too! but Procreate released Dreams recently. I’m just saving up for it oneday!

2. Easypose (FREE)

I love using this for composition, perspective and poses especially in group setting which I really struggle with. The proportions are very much anime but nothing anatomy studies can’t fix!! Also love that its free and isnt subscription based. Lil warning though the asset library is very limited. there are DLCs but they’re not as detailed as what you’d see in Magic poser and/or Clip studio. But still the basic shapes still help a lot! and I wish i can change the color and move the light but it only has the one light source.

Lollll well you might not be once you see what it’s about! The subject matter is not for everyone. It’s a story I wrote a long time ago and finally decided to just share publicly. There’s a lot of reasons for that, I can get into them at some point if anyone cares, but the main thing is it felt important to share with whoever may want to read it. And since I love ao3 and the way it formats things, that’s where it is going.

Might as well mention this here too - I said in the a/n that the story, Starlings, was inspired a lot by Holly Black. But now that I’m thinking about it more it was also really inspired by the book The Child Thief, which I had read not long before starting it, AND what was actually a plot bunny on here! Maybe someone remembers but I spit out a plot bunny that I think was intended to be a tomione? One where basically all the muggleborn girls with powerful/attractive magic were rounded up and kept in a very nice secluded place and basically used for procreation purposes because the magical population needed to grow… and I think someone also wrote a little one shot/drabble based on it. (Does anyone know what I’m talking about???? I swear this all happened!)

it also may bear mentioning, because I’m sure the comparison will be made or at least thought of based on that description, that I hadn’t yet read The Handmaid’s Tale when I started Starlings, so aside from the ‘forced pregnancy’ thing there’s very few similarities to that world. There’s no men raping women (there’s magic, okay, it’s magic); in fact, there’s very few male characters in the whole story.

anyway. Yeah. Starlings is inspired by those things, and I already have if all written, so you can expect regular updates if you decide to read it.
