Babylon 5 s02e07: A Race Through Dark Places
s02 Table of Contents • previous episode
Station budget relies on the civilian traffic, but the military traffic has been higher than usual, so they’re running on a deficit, since the military doesn’t reimburse the station for funds lost by the mandatory re-routing of civilian business. And they want want to charge Sheridan and Ivanova 30 credits a week to stay in their current quarters, which are a whole 7 square feet bigger than the next size down which would remain free. All this sounds exactly some some bs the USA would pull and is completely believable.
My!!! guy!!!! Bester is back! And on a day when I’ve found a totally legal and normal way to screencap for some gifs again. hell to the yeah. Prediction: I’m gonna like this one. He’s got a new, scary sidekick.
Oh I love him, he’s so terrifying and perfect.
Telepath: “He’s dead.” Bester: “It doesn’t matter. I caught it, just before he died. Betrayed by his final thoughts.”
He’s my special little guy. But does this mean Talia is involved with the underground telepaths?? She was really not down with whatsherface not going to PsiCorps.
Sheridan is just down to fight whenever anyone squares up even a little. What is 30 credits? I have nothing to compare it against. Is it like, a nice meal for two? A month’s wages for a dock worker? I feel like this is the first hard number for a price I’ve seen so far.
Going for the easy questions I see, Delenn! Just quickly, explain humanity. Awww she’s so cute. Dinner date with Sinclair! He was dtf (down to fight) 2 seconds ago and now he’s dtf (down to flee) and figure out if this is a date or not.
Sheridan: “One day they’re shooting at you, the next they’re taking you out to dinner. Hah! What a universe.”
He looks bemused and delighted. I’m delighted. This episode will have everything if only Susan and Talia will be allowed to be onscreen at the same time.
OMFG they’re in the same room at the same time!!!
Sheridan: “I’d like to talk to my people for a moment.” Bester and Talia: *leaves the room* Me: “Talia where the fuck are you goin...oh. Telepath. well frag that.”
Garibaldi: “Want, agree, that has nothing to do with it. The law is the law.”
And that’s ACAB baby. When the law is unjust, those that uphold the law are unjust.
Garibaldi: “That’s damn ironic, isn’t it? That the corps got started because we were afraid of telepaths? Now we’re victims of our own fears. And we took away every right they had and shoved them into a big, black box called Psi Corps. Now look at em. Black uniforms, jackboots, giving orders. Some days they scare the hell out of me.“ Sheridan: “Yeah If you ask me, we created our own monster. And maybe we deserve it.“
Good advice by Ivanova. Read the logs about the Jason Ironheart Incident.
Lots of good background info being dropped. Talia wouldn’t notice a surface scan, she keeps walls up to block out the background noise, but Bester wasn’t and heard someone calling him a murderer.
“Bester will try to stop up, so we don’t have any choice. We have to kill him.”
I agree, but also, oh man my special guy. :(
DELENN YOU BABE. Well no wonder Sheridan falls for her. She’s humaning it up like a bossbabe for this date.
It’s genuinely astonishing that Ivanova has nothing whatsoever to do with the underground (that she’ll admit to). I think odds are relatively good that she actually does. Perhaps Dr Franklin is? He’s been a little revolutionary.
Date’s going well. Humor is an excellent bonding point.
Bester reaching out to Talia civilly. We love to see it, only for the drama.
Love to see the return of Jason Ironheart CGI Ascended!
Also love the lingering, artful shots of Talia being angsty in profile.
The penny!! Is she or isn’t she a telekinetic?? I am once again asking for Talia Telekinesis Skills. AND YES THERE IT IS BABYYYYY. Now that’s some self defense.
Earthforce locked them out of their rooms! Those asshats. It’s so sweet how willing Susan is to go along with all Sheridan’s schemes.
Mary Had A Little Lamb has never been so ominous.
OK, so now that they’re sleeping in Sheridan’s office she’s quite a bit more disgruntled.
Ivanova: “Were you like this when you were married?” Sheridan: “Yeah!” Ivanova: “That woman was a saint.”
John you have a huge crush. Repeating all the jokes you heard from your dinner date and practically blushing over thinking about it is peak crush behavior.
DS9 nod? Those are raktajino mugs that Bester and Talia are using.
Fishing for info, fishing for informants, and unfortunately not so distracted that he missed the assassins. Who should really learn to shield their thoughts if they’re gonna be assassinating level 15 telepaths. And throwing Talia in a closet. A literal closet. lol.
This is the one and only anger fit Garibaldi can throw that I support.
Oh well, not really a closet I guess. Man, she gets manhandled a lot.
I agree, wake up girlie. The Corps are not benign and you don’t even believe what you’re saying.
Dun dun dun! Franklin does have connections. Called it.
Oh, the gloves are a PsiCorps requirement! Continuing yikes. Excellent control mechanism. They’re a high control cult. What you wear, where you live, who you talk to, who you touch, how you live, where and how you work, who you marry. About as high control as you get.
oooof, and forced pregnancy. I wonder if the baby got a guide for a year and then it was on its own as soon as it could walk.
“You’re asking me to take everything I believe and turn it upside-down.”
yeah, that’s hard to do when you’re ready to deconstruct from cult life, let alone when you’re kidnapped by kindly telepaths who insistently tell you horror stories of PsiCorps as some kind of guided deconstruction.
Invoking Jason Ironheart is absolutely the way to get Talia to help. I’m rooting so hard for them! And for Bester to survive and continue to commit atrocities for my viewing pleasure. I’m a simple person.
DOCTOR STEPHEN FRANKLIN YOU DUPLICITOUS BADASS! This episode is everything. I’m vibrating. Generally I like to feel good about predicting things even partially correctly but I only said maybe Dr Franklin has connections, not that he’s running the whole operation, and I’m gonna own that being only very partial. This is baller.
He’s a conspiracy theories that are real guy like Sheridan is, but only for telepathy! Secret doctor network!! The unofficial clinic!!
Alas, Sheridan, but “I agree but the laws“ is not moral best practice.
Bester! My evil little fellow.
Talia grew a hell of a spine in the last ten minutes.
Collective telepathy!!!
“The corps is Mother. The corps is Father. I know where my loyalties lie.”
I don’t see how this could play out any way but that these people are dead, but that would also be totally bonkers considering she just planned something with Dr Franklin and Sheridan.
LITERALLY all faked? d a m n
I am extremely into collectivist telepathy. It’s super tragic that they are discouraged from touching even each other. All of them must be just so touch starved.
Doctor Franklin has just shot up a mile in my estimation of him as a person. He got a lot of points for treating Poor Murdered Child, but I also don’t like thinking about that episode. (0/1 stars, will never watch again)
Ah, so Sheridan also has a way with pedantry. Is this a commentary on how rigid military regulations makes for twisting-the-hell-out-of-the-rules geniuses?
Insert incoherent babble here about gloves-off Talia smiling at be-robed Susan smiling at her! Oh this episode is everything I could have wanted. Definitely a 5/5 star one for me! And certainly my favorite of the season so far!

Can I request about a short story or head canon for Midoriya, Hawks or Shoto( any of the three will do) about S/O who experience a trauma about her work before due to abusive management, coworkers who bullies her and clients that demands the impossible things/wants them to break the policies for them because they are from influential family. That incident leads her to resign. S/O keeps the incident from Midoriya, hawks or shoto but her past keeps haunting her, how can Midoriya, Hawks or Shoto will help their S/O?
My ask box is crickets rn, so I can do all three! I will do a drabble writing about what happened to the reader and then do HCs for the rest!
Reader who was Abused at her Old Job x MHA Multiple Characters [Drabble and Head Canons]:
(Midoriya, Hawks, & Shoto)
The incident:
Oh, how you hated this place. There was currently not any better options for you out there, so you had no choice but to just take it. Your coworkers were rude and bullied you every chance they got, only to tell you things like ‘It’s just a joke, why are you taking it so seriously?’ when you reacted negatively towards them. You knew they weren’t fully joking, but all you could do was grin and bear it.
The upper management positions were filled to the brim with people who not only abused their positions, but also their employees. You were often stuck doing tasks not in your job description only to get written up and scolded for “neglecting” your actual job. And it usually happened by the same bosses who made you stop doing your work in the first place.
Lastly, and perhaps the worst of all, was the clients. They walked all over you and demanded things that just weren’t possible, and no matter how many times you politely told them that you would lose your job if you were to fulfill particular requests of theirs, you would get told in response ‘Don’t you know who I am? My family practically built this city! I’ll get you fired if you don’t do as I say!’
Day after day you came home wondering when this would all end. You just couldn’t take it anymore, but sadly this was all you had. There was nothing to save you from this.
Until one day, you were discovered so to speak. Your work was recognized by a top hero, who immediately wanted you to work for them, and you had to say that seeing your bosses beg for you to stay and your coworkers’ mouths dropping was satisfying.
It was great to be gone from that nightmare, but as time passed, you learned that you weren’t truly free from it just yet.
Midoriya:
-All Might had actually scouted you out to work for the Pro-Hero Deku at his agency.
-It was easy to tell that Izuku was caught off guard when he first met you, but not in a bad way.
-He was not only interested in your talents, but also you as well.
-So, once he worked up the courage to ask you out on a date, your relationship began. And you had to admit, Izuku was an incredible boyfriend.
-He was always so sweet, though he didn’t make you feel as if you had to date him because you worked for him.
-Everything seemed perfect, until these negative thoughts started to arrive.
-You wondered if you would ever have to deal with rude coworkers, or if they were talking about you behind your back. You wondered if any of the clients asking for Deku’s help would try to get you to manipulate the system for them. And sadly, you wondered if Deku would start to abuse his power.
-These thoughts were small at first, but as they grew, they appeared in your actions. You became more quiet and tried to make yourself seem less noticeable to those around you.
-You just couldn’t help but to feel that way as it seemed as if your old Job still had a hold on you.
-But, you did have an amazing boyfriend, so Deku noticed in no time at all. “Are you okay? You’ve been acting kind of strange at work lately.” The two of you were at his place when he expressed this concern.
-”Y-Yes, I’m fine,” you quickly told him, faking a smile. Izuku didn’t buy it one bit, and you could tell that by the look on his face. You let out a sigh, “Sorry...It’s just...My last job was so horrible. My coworkers, clients, and even my bosses were just so harsh and demanding...I guess it still stuck with me because-Well, I’m afraid that it’s going to happen with you and your agency.”
-Izuku looked taken back by this, and immediately he reached over and grabbed your hand, “Oh, you don’t need to apologize!” he told you, “I’m sorry that you had to go through that, but I promise I’d never let that happen to you again. Everyone at my agency likes you, and I’d always take the side of my employees over a rude client. I know my words can’t undo all that you’ve went through, but I promise that I won’t let that happen to you again.”
-He sounded so genuine and earnest, and you knew that he was. It would take some time, but you knew everything would be alright with him there with you.
Hawks:
-”You have a high profile client in your office, now hurry it up or you are fired!”
-You nodded quickly to your boss before rushing into your office, almost tripping on your way in as you made it to your desk.
-Hawks was a well known hero and deeply loved by people, so needless to say, your coworkers were pissed that you would be the one seeing him.
-“How may I help you?” Your tried to act as professionally as possible, but you were actually a mess on the inside.
-Hawks looked at you with an eyebrow raised, “Does your boss always talk to you that way?” he asked. Your mouth dropped as you were asked that. He heard?! Hawks started to chuckle, “Sorry, my feathers pick up vibrations, allowing me to easily overhear things.” You quickly tried your best to overcome your embarrassment.
-”No, no, it’s fine,” you told him, “I couldn’t keep you waiting. Now, what do you need?” This seemed to earn you an amused look.
-”I actually came here hoping to poach one of the workers for my agency,” Hawks told you, “With the way that asshat of a boss is, I’m sure this will be a good opportunity for you, too.” You were taken back by this, the wind seeming to knock right out of you.
-”E-Excuse me? Did I hear you correctly?” you asked.
-”I can even match your salary,” he smiled, “Now tell me, what’s the funnest and most satisfying way that you can quit?”
-You started to work for Hawks less than a week later, and then a month after that, he asked you out on a date.
-He was such an incredible man, that it was no wonder so many people fawned over him, and the more you got to know him, the more you felt as if he deserved that.
-But then...the doubts started to set in.
-You were starting to remember your old job and the way that you were treated, and despite the fact that the employees that worked for Hawks were so warm and friendly, you still felt a nagging pit in your stomach.
-What you had dealt with before was no joke, and sometimes thoughts from it kept you awake at night.
-It was just a good thing for you that your new boyfriend was so attentive. At the first sign of changes in your behavior, he confronted you about it.
-”Hey, you alright, baby? You’ve been kind of down recently.”
-You felt kind of unsure if you could truly talk to him about this, but he was such a good man that maybe his help was what you needed.
-”Remember my old job? Well, what you saw wasn’t the half of it. My coworkers and even my clients were just horrible pieces of work. They bullied and abused me, and well...I’m haunted by that.” You looked away from him, crossing your arms as you thought about the past.
-Hawks easily walked closer to you, reaching out and lifting your chin. “Sweetheart, you’re so much better than those kinds of people. I saw it, and I’m sure they knew that, which was why they targeted you. Good people don’t hurt others. Besides, I’m here for you, and if you ever have to deal with someone like that again, I’ll save you,” Hawks wrapped his arms around you and kissed the top of your head, “Now, the next time I see your old boss, I’m going to thank him for giving you to me, then call him an asshole.” You couldn’t help but to giggle at that.
-Hawks was just what you needed.
Shoto:
-Moving on and putting the past behind you was all you wanted to do, so when you received a job offer from the pro hero Shoto himself, you took it without delay.
-You were a bit intimidated at first, knowing that this was one of the best hero agencies in the country, but everyone around you just made you feel so at home-Especially your boss.
-And speaking of your boss, when he first laid eyes on you, he became a bit of an awkward mess.
-Eventually, he worked up the courage to ask you out, and several months later you were in a happy relationship together.
-Shoto was sweet, caring, and very loving towards you. You honestly felt as if you didn’t deserve a man this good, but there he was happily dating you.
-Everything seemed fine, until you felt a strong relapse in emotions. You were working in a safe and kind environment, so why was your anxiety about your old job starting to creep up?
-You began to remember the way your coworkers treated you, the way your bosses would demand the impossible, and the way your clients spoke to you as if you were nothing.
-This sort of thing had you tossing and turning at night and becoming very nervous about your current job. What if you messed up? Would your new coworkers start to criticize you? Would Shoto?
-”...Hey...Hey?” Shoto didn’t yell much, and even now he proved that as he gently got your attention. “You okay?”
-”Yeah, I’m fine,” you quickly faked a smile. Shoto had invited you to his office to eat lunch, which was a pretty regular occurrence.
-”I see...,” he spoke softly, indicating that he didn’t believe you. He then remained silent for a while before out of nowhere-”You know...You’ve been like this recently. I even notice that you have such a stressed look on your face when you sleep.” You felt your cheeks warm up at the latter thing that he told you.
-”Seriously, I’m alright,” you insisted. Shoto just looked at you, though; his disbelief in your words more than clear.
-”You also seem a bit distracted at times when you’re doing your work here,” he said. At this point, it became easy to tell that he was going to keep listing off your recent behavior until you told the truth. So, you took a deep breath.
-”Okay, I get it,” you said, “Look...I-...The place that I used to work at was a nightmare. Everything from the bosses to the clients was just brutal to the point where just thinking about it keeps me up at night...I hate that it still has this power over me, but I can’t help it. That time really scarred me.”
-Shoto watched your expression as you spoke, and then let out a sigh. “I’m sure it will take time before you can feel better about that sort of thing and move on, but if you keep it bottled up that won’t happen.” You looked at him curiously, “I’m here for you, alright? Instead of letting these thoughts just stay there, tell me about them. I’m sure once you get it out, and I tell you how awful the people you worked with were and how much better you are than them, you’ll be able to sleep with no problems at all.” You couldn’t help but to smile at his words.
-”You’d really do that for me?” you asked.
-”Of course. You mean the world to me.”
-You were sure that with Shoto’s help, you’d feel a million times better.

MASTERLIST
~
Glancing at your phone, you were surprised to find that it was already 1:34 AM. How had your friends distracted you enough to have you stay out this late?
You shoved your way to the bar and tried to order a drink over the pulsating music filling the club.
“Aw, come on, mama,” you could hear a man next to you sweet talking one of your friends, “he’s six-foot-one and can tell you more interesting facts than you’d ever learn yourself. Plus he’s got three PhD’s. Tell me that doesn’t get you goin’.”
Your friend scoffed and dropped a napkin onto the bar. Ten neatly scrawled digits written across the bottom. Without thinking, you picked up the napkin, looked it over, and slipped it into your pocket.
“No thanks, honey,” your friend said, “But, I wouldn’t be opposed to you buying me a drink.”
And suddenly, her and the man were on the dance floor, leaving you alone yet again.
You supposed it was about time to turn in, shooting a quick text to your friend and catching a cab back to your apartment.
As you got in bed, not bothering to change out of your club outfit, you felt the lump in your pocket that held the phone number.
As much as you despised technology, you had finally gotten the hang of saving phone numbers into your phone. That and telling the time was the only thing it was good for anyway.
So it wasn’t too much of a surprise when your hands automatically typed in the number and pressed call.
What was a surprise, was the nervous voice on the other end answering on the second ring.
“H-hello?”
It was a man. His voice was scratchy and low, like he’d been asleep.
“Hello?”
“Do you need me to come in?” there was rustling on the other end, like he was getting out of bed.
“What?”
He went silent, seemingly realizing that you weren’t who he thought you were.
“Who is this?”
For some reason, you found yourself smiling at the way he asked.
“Who is this?”
Your answer seemed to have shocked him judging by the noise of him opening and closing his mouth a few times.
“I’m, uh, certainly not going to give my name to a stranger on the phone who won’t tell me theirs.”
You chuckled.
“Fair enough. I got your number at a bar. I thought i’d .. call . . . And I’m just realizing how weird this is.”
In your defense, he did chuckle softly.
“No, no. It’s interesting. I don’t really meet a lot of new people so, um. Wait. Did the number happen to be written on a napkin? Perhaps given to you by a suave asshat named Derek?”
You giggled into the phone, pleased to hear he was enjoying the conversation.
“Napkin yes. Derek? No clue. I don’t really talk to people at bars.”
“Yeah. I don’t really go to bars.”
“Seriously? Then how do I have your number?”
He cleared his throat harshly.
“I, ahem, I was telling my friend Derek about how I don’t really, um . . . get girls and he bet me he could find at least one woman who’d be . . . interested.”
You laughed, charmed by the way he stuttered.
“Ah, that makes sense. I was with my friend and she, uh, dropped the napkin. Although, I will say, you do have adorable handwriting.”
“Oh, right. Yes, thank-thank you. You have a nice voice. It’s calming. I mean, people tend to be about sixteen percent more attracted to nice voices. Not that I’m attracted to you. I mean! Not that you aren’t um. Actually i don’t know what you look like so I can’t really . . . um.”
A surge of boldness ran through you and in that moment, at 2:16 in the morning, you made a decision.
“Do you want to?”
“Want to what?”
“Know what I look like?”
He stuttered on the other end, unsure what you were saying.
Before he could say anything else, you hung up, texted your address to him, and jumped in the shower.
Only when the warm water hit your skin did you realize the weight of what you’d just done. You’d just texted your home address to a complete stranger whose name you didn’t even know.
“Oh god.”
Were you in danger? Jesus. You jumped out of the shower and ran to your phone, suddenly much more awake.
“I should call the cops, right?” you muttered to yourself, throwing on a bathrobe. “I should! Right?”
But the knock at the door snapped you out of your downward spiral.
You had two options. Call the police. Or open the door.
Your hand found the doorknob faster than you’d like to admit, throwing open the front door and being hit by the sight of the man in front of you.
True to what the man at the bar said, he was tall. But that wasn’t what struck you. He was wearing a pale blue set of pajamas and old sneakers on his feet. His fluffy hair was rumpled from sleep but his eyes were wide open.
You suddenly remembered your own state of disarray: hair wet from the shower, no makeup, and only wearing a bathrobe.
“I—“ he started to speak, unsure of what to say. Understandably so; this was a very unlikely situation.
You reached out to him, hand sneaking around the lapel of his pajama top and pulling him into your apartment and leading him towards the bedroom.
His eyes were blown wide, watching you intently, letting you take charge of the situation.
So you did. Pushing him so he sat down on your bed and standing between his legs. He didn’t move. Just stared nervously, maintaining eye contact.
After he didn’t make any move, you gently grasped his hands, leading them up to the tie of your robe, placing them there.
He took the hint, quicker than you expected, and got to work untying the knot. The moment he did, you started to unbutton his pajamas, pushing the top back off his torso, revealing a smooth, tough chest that you could run your hands over for hours.
He’d untied your robe, but his hands were now nervously hovering over the opening.
You climbed into his lap, resting your arms on his shoulders and leaning in to whisper in his ear. You recalled something his friend at the bar had said.
“What are you waiting for? Doctor.”
A soft moan escaped his lips at the name, pulling you closer, hands tight around your hips.
Intrigued, you continued.
“Oh? You like it when I call you that, doctor?”
Suddenly, you were on your back, hands pinned above your head. He had flipped you over, now laying between your legs, you could feel his growing erection pressed up against you.
A dark look flickered across his eyes, quickly replaced by one of worry. He removed his hands from yours and started to sit up, presumably to apologise for getting rough. You weren’t having that.
You quickly flipped the two of you so you were straddling him, gently grinding against his growing bulge.
The look in his eyes did horrible things to you and you couldn’t stand another second without his lips against yours.
The kiss was hot and fueled by the danger of the circumstance, you being at the mercy of this utter stranger that, for some reason, you trusted completely.
You pulled back, panting heavily and running your hands up and down his chest. His hands were placed softly against your back, lightly stroking through your robe.
“Take it off,” you growled into his ear.
That seemed to be the last straw, for he flipped you over again, ripping your robe off and throwing it across the room, pulling his pajama pants down and grinding painfully slowly against you.
“Is this what you want?” his voice was low and scratchy, like it had been on the phone but there was more to it now. There was something you couldn’t place in his eyes. The words sent a chill through you, making you dig your nails into his back, pulling him against you.
“Not quite,” you muttered against his ear, digging through your bedside drawer and pushing him away. He took the lead, shedding his underwear, grabbing the condom and rolling it on.
Now, with him on top of you, cock gently pressing against your entrance, not quite pushing in yet, you realized that what you’d seen in his eyes wasn’t worry. It was care.
When he spoke, it was gentle, light.
“Is this okay?”
A warm surge went through you at the question. He was genuinely concerned about how you felt.
You smiled gently at him, and he smiled back, a hint of worry remaining in his expression.
Rather than answer aloud, you hooked your legs around his back and pulled him into you.
His face lit up, mouth forming an O as he moaned softly, eyebrows furrowing as he plunged into your tight heat.
He was considerably bigger than you’d expected, going off his slight stature. The sensation was very new. You hadn’t been with anyone in a while and you gasped quite loudly as the two of you adjusted to the feeling.
After a moment, he started fidgeting, eager to move.
You released your grip with your legs, allowing more room for movement. The second you did, he began to thrust, slow at first, almost teasingly. He was soon spurred on by the volume and intensity of your moans, probably also from you being so close to his ear.
A wave of pleasure suddenly shocked you as he hit just the right spot, resulting in a strange squeak coming from your mouth.
His eyes went wild and suddenly his hand was at your throat, squeezing the sides every so gently.
You felt your eyes roll back, overwhelmed by the sensation. His hand snapped away quickly and he froze.
“Shit. . . I’m so sorry . . . I—I didn’t mean—“
But you simply grabbed his hand and placed it back on your neck, softly squeezing his fingers and giving a little nod.
It took him a moment to get the hint, but when he did, he really went for it. Pounding into you, biting down on your clavicle, and making the blood rush to your head — amongst other places.
You had to force yourself to move your hands from where they were clawing at his lower back. You pulled his shoulders forward and bit his earlobe, causing his movements to stutter.
“Oh, fuck. . . . I don’t know how long. . . .”
“It’s okay,” you reassured him, slipping a hand down between you and rubbing your clit, increasing the feeling tenfold.
Your moans quickly became louder, only making him pound harder. Surely the headboard was banging against the wall. The neighbors would for sure complain.
Suddenly, the hand on your throat flew to your ankle, gripping it tightly and swinging your leg up over his shoulder. The angle was now just right and he hit the spot inside you each time he thrust in, pushing you closer and closer to the edge.
“Oh, god. Yes. Ohhhhh . . .” you rubbed furiously, on the verge of your orgasm. “I’m gonna—“
“Me too,” his voice was so sweet and still so dirty.
An unexpected idea washed over you.
“Look at me.”
His eyes snapped open, startling you with the haze over his pupils. Although, you were sure if someone held a mirror to you right now, you’d look pretty much the same.
Almost the instant your eyes met, you felt the knot in your stomach snap, sending waves and waves of pleasure through you as you tightened around your partner.
He could definitely feel you coming, eyebrows furrowing and speeding up his thrusts so they were now shallow and quick, just enough to get him off. Which he did very shortly after you, hand snaking around your throat and pushing you down onto his cock as he came.
He grunted on the last thrust, using every ounce of his strength not to collapse on top of you.
Your voice froze in your throat as he pulled out, discarding the condom and plopping down next to you, breathing heavily.
Somehow, your post-coital brain started to rush with the guilt of what you’d just done. You didn’t know this man in the slightest.
“I don’t even know your name,” you whispered to the ceiling, staring at the little popcorn-like bumps.
He turned on his side, lightly running a finger along your jaw in a way that was far too sweet for a one-night stand.
You turned to look at him. His eyes were much lighter now. You could see small flecks of green behind them.
“My name’s Spencer.”
A smile lit up your face, prompting one from him in turn.
“I’m Y/N.”
He blushed, holding out his hand.
“Nice to meet you, Y/N.”
You took his hand, shaking it firmly and beaming at him.
“Nice to meet you, Spencer.”

So, when I was in college, there was some holiday thing going on where someone in the school was told “Okay, for fun, take casual, not-creepy pictures of these four specific girls, then post them in the school commons with the captions ‘The prettiest girls in the freshman, sophomore, junior, senior class’. Anyway, I was the freshman girl up on the board.
I was…actually a little bit pleasantly surprised, because in the picture, I was smiling and for the first time in maybe six or ten years, I didn’t immediately feel like I needed to disappear. (My parents calling me ugly and basically just being assholes did that over time.)
But, well, some days later, a whole group of my fellow freshman came into the commons while I was at a table studying, and…well, let’s just say that one of the guys thought it would be super ‘macho’ of him to waltz up to me, plop down in a chair across from me, and tell me that I wasn’t the prettiest girl in the class.
Oh, he regretted that interaction :D
The full conversation went something like this:
The guy: *is an asshole*
I look up from my notebooks, rather confused and not immediately remembering about the picture. “Uh…huh? What?”
The guy: *Belligerently insists that So-so-so is prettier, because come on, how could I think that I’m prettier than she is?*
I blink, genuinely confused. (I wasn’t good with names. Or any drama, for that matter). “Um.” *looking over my shoulder at the group of people just standing against a far wall and some of them looking uncomfortable. “…which one is she, again?” (These were all the wealthy, pretty, popular people, by the way. I saw hair color differences, but that was it.)
The guy points, starts to list off all of the other girls in ‘his’ group, and asks how could I ever think that I’m prettier than any of them.
I think I waved hi to them, genuinely trying to greet them, but no one made eye contact.
At this point, realization that he’s trying to embarrass me finally hits, but I’m still having trouble believing this is happening. When I finally got some words sorted out, I think I said something about how beauty was supposed to be in the eye of the beholder, but the guy kept pushing, going on about how I didn’t have anything they didn’t already have, and did I really think I could compare to any of them? Meanwhile his friends are just looking terribly embarrassed but are still not doing anything to step in.
It’s at this point I finally begin to realize this group has probably just come back from getting well and truly drunk, but I don’t feel any better. But, anger does start to bubble inside my chest, and I remember thinking, “Okay then, you bastards. Let’s play this ‘embarrassment game.’”
I leaned forwards, disregarding my books, and said, “Oh, well, you know, maybe I’m not that pretty.”
I think he realized I was finally catching on to what an asshat he was being, and he thought I would get up and leave, but I stayed right where I was.
“But I’m hoping that, if one day, I do decide to get married, that my husband will think that I’m pretty. I’m hoping so, anyway. It would be nice. But regardless, I’d really like for him to like me, for me.”
I think at this point the asshat tried saying something like, “I’m- okay, just - what - “
But I talked over him. I was smiling directly into his face, and it was with all of my teeth showing, because I wasn’t about to just let him squirm out of this.
“And really, I should thank you, because you sound so much like my father.”
I let out a light little laugh that was 100% fake and sounded like I wanted to tear out his eyes, which I sort of did, but what was the point of trying that? I had better things to do than deal with the paperwork that would entail. Still, he leaned away from me, sobering up just enough to realized that I was super pissed off at him and his group of lackeys. I continued, still smiling, still sweet as ice:
“This place is just like home now.”
I flicked my eyes back over towards the pretty, shallow, completely inept group of nitwits who were supposed to be my peers.
“So thank you, for that. It’s just - such a familiar feeling. How great is that.”
I think I got up from my chair, never getting any closer to anyone, and shoved my books back into my carrier bag. At this point, contempt, disgust, and utter what-the-fuck-is-up-with-this?-energy just radiated off me like a supernova, and no one came near me, which is what I wanted. :D
Then I gave them all a terrifyingly wide smile, with murder in my eyes, and chirruped, just like a nightmare version of Disney’s Snow White, “Sleep well!” Before going out the door and into the night, back to my dorm, where I think I cried a lot.
I am pleased to report I still think of this moment and smile. Not so murdery, now, though. I save that for the asshats. :D :D
#rangergirl3#I like to think that I looked like some terrifying dangerous fey creature in that moment

The Partner Trap
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader Word Count: 1438
Warnings: Enemies to lovers, sass
Prompt 31. Pranksters trap Person A and Person B together.
Summary: You and Bucky have an abrasive relationship at best until your teammates decide to trap you together.
A/N: This is for @adorkably 100 followers writing challenge! Congratulations, Angelcake! ILYSM!
Tony had bought out the entire fair for Stark Industries and the Avengers. The fairgrounds was alight with music, laughter, and squeals of delight. The Avengers team laughed as Bucky and Clint competed at water guns. Clint proudly carried his prize around and needled Bucky as much as possible. You and Natasha danced around to the band playing. Steve told stories about Coney Island. Sam dragged everyone to the wildest rides. The entire team had a blast as you went from ride to ride together.
The only sour note was the bickering between you and Bucky. Today, it had started when the two of you were forced to sit together on one of the rides and Bucky purposefully took the seat you wanted. It got to the point that Tony threatened to duct tape both your mouth's shut. Natasha and Clint were sent in to separate the two of you.
As the day was coming to a close Nat dragged you to the Mirror Maze. The two of you giggle as you got lost and confused by the maze. You hear someone coming around the corner and turn with a grin expecting Natasha. However, you run into Bucky.
"Ow." You say as you slam into his broad chest.
"Such a whiner." Bucky grouses.
"Such a jerk." You brush past him.
Suddenly, the lights in the maze turn out and you hear doors slamming.
"What the fuck?" You say.
"Hey, you two still in the Mirror Maze." Tony's voice comes over the loud speaker. "You didn't make it out in time, so now you get to stay here until tomorrow morning. Why don't you figure out why the hell you have such a problem with each other. Good night, losers." Half the lights come back on as Tony finishes.
"Tony!" You yell.
"I'm gonna kill you, Tony. Clint, too!" Bucky yells.
"Why Clint?" You ask.
"He's the one that drug me in here." Bucky says.
"Nat made me come in. Those three assholes planned this." You look around at the predicament you find yourself in. Stuck in a disorienting maze with the biggest jerk on the team. "Payback's a bitch!" You yell.
"They're gone. Why are you still yelling?" Bucky snarks.
"Because I fucking want to!" You shout.
"Why are you so annoying?" Bucky yells.
"Why are you such a jerk?" You holler back.
"Whatever." Bucky walks away from you.
"Yeah, go! Go find a way out." You say.
"If I do, I'm not bringing you." Bucky throws over his shoulder.
"Ditto, asshat." You wander through the maze and make your way back to the beginning. There's no way out you can find and the doors are padlocked from the outside. Turning back, you wander until you get to the end where you find Bucky.
"It's padlocked from the outside." He says.
"Same at the front." You say, deciding to try to be civil.
"I could try to punch through it. Metal doesn't seem too thick."
"Oh, yeah, that'll work. I mean we'll be cut to ribbons as the mirrors around us shatter, but go for it." You snark.
"Well, what do you suggest, princess?"
"Don't call me princess, geezer." You lean on one of the mirrors and cross your arms.
"You're the one that started the name calling."
"I believe you called me whiner first." You shoot back.
"Not what I meant, genius." Bucky throws out.
"Oh my God! When are you going to get over that! I called you Mister instead of Sargeant when I met you. It was a slip of the tongue! I wasn't calling you a name." You exclaim.
"It was disrespectful." Bucky growls as he stares into you.
"So was refusing to shake my hand." You spit.
"Well, after the looney bin comment you really expected me to?" Bucky comes toe to toe with you.
"Is that what made you so mad?" You say in disbelief. "I didn't know you had such great love for Senator Nichols. I'm so sorry I offended you." You roll your eyes. Being a supporter of the senator gave you another reason to dislike Barnes. Senator Nichols was an egomaniac with delusions of grandeur.
"What are you talking about?" Bucky looks at you and you see some of his snark melt into real confusion.
"Senator Nichols. I said he needed to be in the looney bin, not joining us for a party. That's why you hate me so much? Because I made a stupid comment about a senator I don't like?" You look at Bucky and watch his face move through an array of emotions. "Barnes?" You try to snap him out of his thoughts when the realization hits you and your mouth drops open. "You thought I was talking about you. You thought I meant you?"
"I, uh, yeah." Bucky says contritely.
"No wonder you hated me. I wouldn't be too keen on me either." You say, reining in a smile.
“So, that comment really wasn’t about me?” Bucky asks.
“I’d never met you. Why would I say something like that about you?” You ask incredulously.
“Because I was a brainwashed Hydra assassin?” Bucky says.
“Well, I guess that’s true. Some asshat might make that comment because of that.”
“Why did you hate me so much then?” Bucky asks.
“Uh, let’s see. You refused to shake my hand, reprimanded me for calling you mister instead of sergeant, and proceeded to treat me with disdain every time I was anywhere near you. Didn't make you very likeable."
"Guilty. I, uh, I'm sorry." Bucky says while rubbing the back of his neck.
"Thanks." You look at him for a second. "Want to start over?" He asks.
"I don't know. I'm pretty good at hating you now. I mean I could do a dissertation on your faults." You grin at him.
"Come on, Doll, give me a chance to prove I'm not a total jerk." Bucky holds out his hand.
You stare at it for a second before putting your hand in his and shaking. "Okay." You smile.
Eventually, the two of you end up sitting across from each other and talking. A few hours go by as you talk, laugh, and learn about each other. You find Bucky sweet and funny. You can tell Bucky's opinion of you shifts as well.
"You're shivering, Doll." Bucky notices.
"It's a little cold." You flash a smile.
"Come sit with me. I'll keep you warm." Bucky grins. You move next to him and cuddle into his side as he wraps an arm around you. "That's better, right?"
"Yeah, thanks." You look into Bucky's eyes. He stares at you and then his gaze drops down to your lips for just a second. You lift your chin and his lips brush against yours lightly.
"Is this okay?" Bucky asks after he pulls back.
"No." You say and reach up to cup his jaw. "I want more." You smile as his lips descend on yours more firmly and his tongue finds its way into your mouth.
Abruptly, the rest of the lights come up and Tony's voice comes over the speaker again. "Okay, you two, that's enough. Break it up. Time to go. You didn't really think I was going to keep you here all night?"
"Still gonna kill you, Tony!" You say as the exit door opens revealing a grinning Natasha and Clint.
"Hey guys. Have fun?" Clint laughs.
Bucky smiles at Clint and then takes off in a chase.
"Won't take Bucky long to catch Clint. Hopefully, he doesn't actually kill-OW!" Nat cuts off when you punch her in the arm.
"Really? You lock us in together?" You seeth.
"Yeah. Did you finally figure out why he hates you?" Nat asks.
"Yeah. He overheard the looney bin comment I made at the party."
"Oh, crap. Did you apologize?"
"For what? I was referring to Senator Nichols with that comment." You smirk.
"No, you weren't. You… you lied to Bucky?" Nat furrows her brow.
"Better than grovelling." You shrug.
"You have to tell him the truth. Apologize." Nat says.
"No. We're in a good place now. He and I can finally be friends. And more." You grin devilishly. "And you won't tell him either."
"What's to stop me?" Nat says.
You simply raise an eyebrow at her.
Nat's eyes widen, "Fine." She says as she stalks away.
A few minutes later, Bucky reappears, "Clint will think twice before pulling a stunt like that again."
"So will Nat." You laugh. "Ready to head home and maybe we can continue our discussion there?"

"Sounds good, Doll." Bucky says as he wraps an arm around your waist.

Hoodies & Lacrosse
Peter Kavinsky x Reader
GIF Not Mine
For my Masterlist, Click Here.
Word Count: 1,566
A/N: This one was requested by the awesome @mychemicalimagines. I hope this is everything you imagined it to be, lovely! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to get this done for you, but I’ve been so swamped with uni work and placement that I’ve just had no motivation for writing. But inspiration struck tonight and I decided to put it to good use.
A/N/Pt2: If you’re in to Friends and Twilight check out their imagines! The series’ are so good and addictive, I cannot recommend them enough! Leaving a link to the Masterlist HERE.
I blinked owlishly, trying to make my eyes feel less exhausted, but it was to no avail—I’d been unable to sleep last night and I was unwilling to admit that it was because Peter had asked for his hoodie back. I’d taken it months ago, well not purposefully, he’d just left it behind one day after we’d been hanging out. I’d been chilly that night, and I figured I’d throw it on, only to discover it was the comfiest thing ever—it was huge on me and it smelled of him, and so I’d grown accustomed to how content and safe it made me feel. Obviously I hadn’t realised how much I’d grown to rely on it to sleep until last night at around three in the morning, when I realised it was the first time in months I’d gone to bed not wearing it.
I yawned, pulled my cardigan tighter around me, and took a large gulp of the coffee I’d poured myself before leaving the house to head to school. I’d managed to drop off around five in the morning, which led to me sleeping through my first four alarms. By some grace of god, I’d made it to first period as the bell rang. I finished off my coffee, and threw the disposable cup into the recycling bin on my way out of the room—thank god I’d had the beverage as my first period had been math; I’d have definitely dozed off without it.
‘Hey, Y/N! Wait up!’ I paused at the sound of my best friend’s voice, mixed feelings erupting through me. Tiredness made me clingy, which Pete was used to, but I was also a little pissed being as in my mind it was his fault I was tired to begin with.
‘Hey, asshat’ I grumbled, wrapping my arm around his waist and melting into his comforting warmth.
He chuckled, ‘such wonderful greetings from you, Y/N. It’s a wonder my head fits through the halls with how much you boost my ego.’
I rolled my eyes, an involuntary smile forming on my face, ‘I’m tired, I think I got thirty minutes of sleep last night. I can’t to go home and sleep until Sunday.’
‘Why didn’t you sleep? Is there something on your mind?’ I felt my irrational irritation with him soften at the concern in his voice; he knew me well enough to know if I had trouble sleeping, it usually meant there was something on my mind causing my insomnia.
‘No, I just didn’t realise how much I’d come to rely on your hoodie until you took it away.’ I felt my lips form into a slight pout, and had I not been exhausted and as a result, needy, I would have been embarrassed.
My head was tucked into his side, my face against his chest, and so I missed the soft, fond look that overtook his expression. I did notice the new girl giving us a look of longing and jealousy, but I ignored her. The other students would clue her in soon enough—we were friends, best, best friends. It may look like we were more due to how touchy we both were with each other, but our relationship didn’t extend beyond a deep, meaningful friendship. It had taken a while for everyone to understand it, and to stop giving us the same look the new girl was giving us now, but they learned eventually.
‘How about this…’ Peter’s voice bought me back to the conversation, ‘you come to my game tonight, and I’ll give you my hoodie to keep forever.’
I bit my lip to hide my smile; it was typical Peter Kavinsky. He knew I wouldn’t miss one of his games—I was always there, rain or shine, wearing his jersey and cheering him on. But he was sweet enough to make it sound like I was doing him a favour when in reality, it was him who was doing something nice for me, by making sure I got his hoodie doing something I was planning on anyway.
I looked up to him, ignoring how my heart fluttered when he tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear when it fell in front of my eyes, ‘you’d give up your favourite hoodie, for me to come to your game?’
I felt my heart melt at the bashful expression that overtook his features, ‘of course I would. I mean it took me months to realise you had it anyway. Clearly it means more to you than it does to me.’
‘You make a good point.’ I teased, biting my lip as I thought and missing the way his eyes followed the movement, ‘okay, if you’re really okay with it, you have a deal.’
‘Awesome.’ He grinned, and I found myself subconsciously beaming back at him, powerless to not return his happiness.
//
‘Come on, Peter!’ I mumbled under my breath, the tension in the air palpable and affecting everyone, it was as if we were all holding our breath in anticipation, ‘you’ve got this!’
Peter ran forward, passed the defence and took his shot at the goalie. It was so quiet I could hear the puck hitting the back of the net and I was unable to hold back my cheer of happiness, which seemed to snap everyone else out of their shock and they joined me. Brown eyes found mine and I felt my heart skip a beat as he unclipped his helmet, tucked it under his arm and made his way over to me, easily bypassing the rest of the audience who’d flooded the pitch. I felt my heart beat pick up and by the time my best friend reached me, my heart was pounding against my ribs. He was watching me with such intensity, that it made my knees feel weak. His beautiful brown eyes were soft with an emotion that I couldn’t identify, as well as fondness, happiness and determination. I had no idea what to expect when he finally joined me on the stands, but when he tossed his helmet aside, and placed both of his hands on my cheeks, I knew that everything was about to change. And when his lips met mine in a tender, tentative kiss, I threw my arms around his neck and succumbed to it. It was meant to be, and I was powerless to fight the passion, and the intensity that moved between us. But more importantly, I didn’t want to.
//
Third Person POV
Daisy Hank didn’t know what to think when she attended her second day of school. It seemed that there was a buzz in the air from the moment she walked through the doors, as if something had happened and everyone was talking about it. She felt a nervous knot form in her stomach, worried that it was somehow about her, but after a few deep breaths and reassurances it dissipated. There was no way it could be about her; she’d only started yesterday and she hadn’t spoken to anyone for long enough for her to accidentally reveal anything embarrassing.
She frowned and walked to her locker, trying to focus her hearing to pick up what was going on from the group of girls that were gossiping next to her locker. She opened it up and pretended to search for something as she managed to get close enough to listen in.
‘Is it true? Peter and Y/N are actually together?’ one of the girls murmured, Daisy didn’t know any of their names, but she could easily hear the disappointment in her voice.
‘Yup, apparently it happened last night at the lacrosse game. He scored the winning game and ran on the stands to kiss her.’ This girl sounded dreamy, and Daisy felt herself instinctively relax a little at the absence of aggression in her tone.
‘It was like a Cinderella Story. So romantic.’ The third girl mirrored the second’s tone and even sighed.
‘So unfair. Kavinsky is the most attractive guy at this school, now what—‘ the first girls bitterness was cut off by an elbow to her abdomen.
Daisy frowned, until she followed their gaze and saw the aforementioned couple walking down the hall. They were in the same position as yesterday; her arm around his waist, his over her shoulders and her face tucked against his chest. And yet, there was a definite change between them, Daisy noticed. Maybe it was because Y/N was wearing a hoodie that was obviously his, or because he now had her backpack slung over his shoulder along with his own, or maybe it was the soft, fond and loving way they looked at each other. But either way, a change was definitely there, and Daisy once again found herself wishing that she had someone who looked at her the way they were observing each other, just like she had yesterday when she’d first laid eyes on them. Except now, she only wanted it more, because unlike yesterday the love and affection they had for each other was radiating from them without restriction. It was as beautiful as it was mesmerising and Daisy released a dreamy sigh of her own as she slammed her locker shut at the sound of the school bell. As she made her way to English, she hoped one day, she would find someone who loved her like that.

Work In Progress Wednesday
So! I’m releasing the first chapter of a new fic tomorrow so how about a preview? The first 4 and a half of 6 (or possibly 7) chapters are written so I’ll do a chapter a week. I’ll put the preview below the cut.
Rating: M
Chapters: 6 or 7
Title: In This Lifetime or the Next
Pairing: InuKag
Summary: The dreams have started. Inuyasha knows what it means, knows what comes next. His soulmate is alive and she’s ready to be found; but this time, he is not ready to find her. Because he is cursed. Because every time he finds her, she dies. Because she’s never lived more than a year after the first dream.
It shouldn’t be possible to get a demon this drunk.
“What do you mean you’re not going to look for her?” Koga asked, leaning over the bar and eyeing the woman serving drinks, again. His speech wasn’t slurred but he had no volume control and he was swaying dangerously on the flimsy barstool.
“Will you keep your eyes in your fucking skull for five minutes?” Inuyasha asked, snapping his fingers in Koga’s face to draw his attention. “Aren’t you seeing someone?”
Koga scowled and turned back to his friend, swatting at the offending hand. “She kicked me to the curb. Said I wasn’t spending enough time with her or some shit. Whatever, you didn’t answer my question.”
The bartender came over to check on them and gave Koga the stink-eye when he tried to wiggle his eyebrows at her. When she walked away, Inuyasha said, “No wonder you dragged me out tonight. And seriously, the bartender isn’t interested. She can probably spot an asshole a mile away and you’re a giant flashing sign that just screams ‘asshole.’”
Koga scowled. “Fuck off and answer my question. You’ve done this, what, like five times now?”
He sighed, trying not to think about the specifics and failing. “Seven and I can’t fucking do it again. I’d rather be alone than-”
“Oh, cry me a fuckin’ river,” Koga growled and downed the rest of his drink in a single gulp. He slammed his glass back on the bar, drawing a few angry looks from other bar goers and the bartender. “What if this time is different?” He swayed dangerously on his stool and Inuyasha tensed, waiting to see if he’d have to play catch.
“You’re really fucking drunk,” Inuyasha pointed out. “Which is amazing for a full demon. And what if it isn’t? Why the fuck would it be any different this time around?” He put a hand up for the bartender to settle their tab. The wolf had had enough.
“You think...fuck. I should call her,” Koga mused, his mind jumping topics at a speed only achievable when shit-faced.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, knowing where this was going and asking anyway. “Call who?”
“My woman.” Koga started to tilt and Inuyasha shot a hand out to steady him. He should have just let the asshole fall. Luckily, the bartender was already there, taking Inuyasha’s credit card.
“Fucking hell, wolf shit. You’re not drunk calling your god damn ex.” One hand on his drunk friend’s shoulder, Inuyasha fished two 20s out of his wallet to throw to the bartender. She earned it dealing with Koga the last few hours. She took it with a grateful smile, handing his card back.
“Good luck with him,” she said, pointing at Koga without taking her eyes off Inuyasha. “Be safe and enjoy the rest of your night.” She shot one more look at him before sauntering off to wait on other customers. He was used to the looks his silver hair and gold eyes earned him. Even among demons he was exotic, an attractive novelty with fluffy fucking ears.
“Let’s get out of here.” Inuyasha stood and dragged Koga out of the bar.
When they were safely outside, he pulled out his phone to call for a ride. Carrying an inebriated demon halfway across the city was not high on his list of things he wanted to do on a Friday night. He debated who his best option would be. Miroku was spending the night with his girlfriend, probably being gross, so that was a no-go. Jinenji would be up but the guy was way too nice to put him through drunk-Koga hell and his wife would give Inuyasha an earful for dragging him out. Ginta or Hakaku would be ignoring calls, knowing how Koga got after a break-up. Shiori would do it but he didn’t want a woman for Koga to focus his attention on. Fuck.
He was gonna have to call the fox.
He popped in his custom-made earpiece (because it’s impossible to find earbuds that fit when you have dog ears) and scrolled through his contacts until he found who he was looking for. Shippo answered and it was clear he had been informed of things that Inuyasha had not. “Yo. Lemme guess: Koga’s break-up hammered and you need a ride?”
“How am I the last to hear about him getting dumped?” He growled and scowled at Koga. It was definitely a conspiracy.
“Someone had to deal with it and you seemed like the best option.” He could practically hear the fucker smirking. Yep, they’d set him up.
“Just get your ass down here.” He gave Shippo the address, keeping one eye and ear focused on Koga. At least Shippo was close by.
Turning his full attention back to Koga, he noticed the phone in his hand a little too late.
"Listen, I’m not even mad about that anymore. How about I come over there now and we can make up. I learned this new trick with my tongue and-" Koga didn't get to finish his sentence because Inuyasha snatched his phone away.
"First, gross. Second, what'd I fucking tell you? No drunk calls to your fucking ex." He glared at Koga, contemplating murder and the best place to dump a body, until a quiet voice distracted him. The ex was still on the phone.
"Hey, anyone still there?"
Shit.
“Hey,” Inuyasha said, holding the phone so they could hear each other more clearly. It was awkward at best with his ears on top of his head but his half-dog-demon hearing made up for it. “Sorry about the asshat, I wasn’t paying enough attention.”
“Oh, it’s alright. I was kinda expecting it anyway,” she said and sighed. “I shouldn’t have answered my phone in the first place so it’s partially my fault.”
Inuyasha growled, fighting the urge to punch Koga in the throat. The woman’s voice was soft and sweet, gently caressing his sensitive ears. The thought of Koga getting anywhere near someone who sounded so...so pure made Inuyasha’s blood boil. “Keh, not your fault he’s an asshole.” Said asshole was making grabbing motions for his phone but Inuyasha swept a leg out casually, Koga’s ass meeting the ground hard enough that Inuyasha heard his teeth clack together. “Don’t worry, I’m not giving him his phone back until he’s sobered up a bit.”
“How much has he had to drink? It takes a lot to get a demon that drunk,” she commented.
“Too much, clearly. I can’t promise he won’t try to call you again when I’m done babysitting his ass. Want me to delete your number from his phone?”
“Hmm, it’s tempting but no.” She sniffled and he wondered briefly if she’d been crying. Just because she was the one doing the dumping didn’t mean she couldn’t be upset about it. “Is he...well, really upset? It wasn’t a...a nice breakup. I kind of...um...well, I accidentally shocked him with my reiki when he wouldn’t leave and I uh, I feel kinda bad.”
Inuyasha couldn’t stop the bark of laughter that escaped his throat. “You what? I mean, I’m sure he deserved it.” Koga grumbled from the ground beside him but Inuyasha ignored him.
“Don’t laugh,” she said but he could hear the amusement in her voice and the poorly stifled giggle. “I never trained beyond keeping it in so sometimes it just...escapes.”
He shook his head and chuckled but reigned in his mirth quickly. “You, uh...are you alright?” he asked, genuinely concerned for the woman even though he’d never met her.
“Oh, yeah.” She sighed and sniffled again. “I mean, I’m as good as I can be after something like that. Thank you though, for asking. Um...what was your name?”
“Oh, uh Inuyasha.” Should he have been on the phone this long with his friend’s ex? Absolutely not. Did he care at the moment? Also absolutely not. His brain was scrambling for a way to keep her talking so he could hear more of her melodic voice. His instincts were shouting at him to comfort and protect the woman on the other end of the phone. He needed to put a stop to that and soon.
“Well uh Inuyasha, my name’s Kagome. Thank you and, um...it was nice to meet you, kind of. Oh, I mean, it was nice to meet you but we only kind of met. Not ‘it was kind of nice to meet you’...um, shit. I’m rambling, sorry.” She giggled and he could feel his ears twitching at the sound. It was fucking adorable.
The awkwardness of it all made him chuckle. “I get it. You too, Kagome.” He liked how it felt saying her name. “And if asshat bothers you again, just let me know and I’ll deal with him for you.”
She giggled again and it just wasn’t fair what it was doing to him. “Will do. I...um, I gotta go. Bye, Inuyasha.”
“Bye, Kagome.” He was sure he was grinning like an idiot by the time he hit the end call button. Hopefully, Koga was too drunk to notice.
“Gimme my phone back, shit-breath.” Koga had managed to get himself back to his feet at some point and was making a more focused grab for his phone. His scowl was a good indicator that he’d heard a good bit of the conversion. Inuyasha didn’t miss the way his eyes narrowed when Inuyasha finally let the smile fall.
“Here, fuckface.” He tossed the phone in the air, Koga catching it with ease despite his drunkenness; he was already starting to sober up.
The blare of a car horn made them both jump. “You two assholes call for a ride?” Shippo yelled out the window. “Hope you know, I charge by the minute.”
Inuyasha pushed Koga into the car, trying and failing to not think of Kagome, thoughts of his soulmate forgotten for the time being.

they ran over the seals
More Replicant playthrough observations and general nonsense under the cut. For reference, up to the keystone quest; completed the Forest of Myth and Junk Heap.
This fucking game I swear to god.
A vaguely coherent ramble about sidequests An observation about sidequests in general in this game -- and I don't recall if I ever voiced this somewhere public or it was just a personal observation from my time with the original -- is that the quests in the first half of the game are all relatively easy to complete. There's that one asshat who wants 10 goat hides, but other than him, most of the sidequests are either very much based on finding characters, or gathering a sensible number of items that are either relatively common, purchasable, or given a guaranteed spawn for the duration of that quest.
The sidequests everybody remembers having to do are in the second half, where everybody is demanding and awful and I'm sorry ten MACHINE OILS do you know how goddamn rare those are? They're goddamn rare.
(We'll not discuss Life in the Sands.)
This is generally agreed to, in the technical vernacular, 'suck'. And it's always funny that the most interesting sidequests are the ones with very minimal requirements (Yonah's cooking, getting Popola drunk, the Lighthouse Ladoh my god everything's gone blurry I'm not crying you're crying who am I kidding we're both crying). That particular aspect of the design also feels intentional, not really gating your ability to progress the really meaningful or funny sidequests behind an unreasonable number of rare items. The other aspect of the design is that these quests are not meant to be completed in a single playthrough; most of them are single-stage and just absolutely unreasonable, but if you're going through the game four times you have a... reasonable chance of getting everything you need more or less naturally.
Nobody does that but I think that was the intended design. I think it's a good idea, although the execution of expectation is flawed so I don't really blame people for saying those sidequests suck. (Although I will in turn blame people for saying the sidequests suck as a blanket statement. Yeah getting that guy who burned his kitchen down a billion Broken Motors is aggravating but did you not find that old man's dog? Speak to Ursula on her death bed? Solve a murder? Then again I think tracking down that rotten son who's trying to get away from The Family Business only to learn his father is a con-artist and get literally no reward is the height of comedy so maybe I'm not the greatest point of reference.)
But that asshole in Facade can get bent. I can't exploit my garden properly, jackass! I am no longer a god of time. (I kid, of course.) (This guys sucks even when you can fix your clock.)
Forest of Myth It didn't even occur to me to wonder how they would incorporate the comprehensive voice acting into the Forest of Myth. I like how it plays out, although I wish the voices maybe had a fade as you went deeper into the dream instead of just cutting out at some point, especially for the lines where the characters are being ascribed actions by the narrator that they themselves aren't doing near the start of the Deathdream. But it's just delightful to go back to it. The second half of the game really sticks in your mind both for emotional reasons and because you play it at least three times per full playthrough of the game, but the first half is just so much fun.
Protip: Talk to everybody after you've finished the dream sidequest. Weiss tries to dissuade you. Don't let him dissuade you. I'm still delighted by the Mayor; "We're building a statue of you, made of solid gold. I know you don't own a horse, but we're going to put you on a horse."
I forgot about Yonah being a disaster chef Papa Nier's reaction to the stew is better. Brother is still funny but Papa Nier just expecting to die is comedy gold.
For anybody curious, the joke about the cakes is that Yonah made 'fruit cake' using some of the worst possible fruits for cake-making. If only she'd thrown a tomato into the mix, too.
Lighthouse Lady Every time. what the fuck is a canal I'm aware of the addition of the new-old content but it didn't occur to me until Popola suddenly starts nattering on about fixing the canal when I'm expecting Yonah to talk about a penpal that oh, yeah, I guess Seafront would have had something going on the first half that would play into the second half? (I assume it does. Be weird to introduce these characters just to have groundwork for an added sidequest. ...but it was a cute sidequest.) But look Popola my boy is supposed to be in the next area I visit could we-- I mean he's on the way could we just-- no-- fiiiiiiiiiine. (It was short and sweet, though, and I appreciate that the couple's love is exemplified by them both calling Weiss a floating magazine in tandem.) On a related note but was I the only person suddenly concerned when the sidequest completion maxed out at 50% and not 51%? I had to double-check with a guide just to make sure, since I've spent the last decade telling people to make sure you hit 51% before going on to Part II.
MY BOY I love that nowadays, Emil is everybody's son. But I really wish I could go find somebody only familiar with Automata and just watch their reaction. (I'm guessing there are streams out there that fulfill this but man I'd love to get it in-person.) If you're only familiar with him from Automata this has to be a mindfuck.
Personal anecdote, but I've had the privilege of playing NIER with somebody else almost every time I've gone through it. I had a wonderful experience of doing a replay some years back with somebody who had experienced it with me before but didn't have the most solid memory of the beginning (and had actually missed the entire weapon's lab the first time through). I get to the boy at the piano introducing himself and the 'Wait, what?' was a thing of beauty.
MY ANDROID This was a welcome mindfuck for me; finding Sebastian and having him 'reactivate' in such an unnatural, mechanical way. I don't recall if it was ever officially confirmed that Sebastian is an android (I know that it's just understood that this is the case but I'm not I can't recall a specific one) but the little flair they added to his animation caught me completely off guard. I liked it!
Destroying the food source A lot of people will cite a major inciting incident for the game as being when the protagonist heading back into the village and killing the child Shades just outside the entrance. This moment is such a great bit of subtle foreshadowing that's so easy to miss... but kind of joining that, just before the Knave of Hearts attacks, I realized that the Shades out on the Northern Plains are clearly ramping up for an assault of their own by murdering the sheep. The sheep population at this point is decimated (which is great when you realize you haven't gotten the Sheepslayer trophy and you're about to enter Part II and you don't know if the boar drifting minigame got carried forward with the inclusion of 15 Nightmares). You go out onto the Plains and you will find not only small clusters of sheep left behind instead of the vast, terrifying herds from the start of the game, but until you get their attention the Shades are prioritizing killing the sheep. (Also annoying because that doesn't count toward my sheep murder number.) The Shades will be out there also killing sheep earlier on, but since the whole map is in Overcast mode after talking to Yonah it's especially prevalent to go out to the Northern Plains and seeing the slaughter. And I realized-- they're cutting the Village off from a primary food source. Shades don't eat and they don't have any beef with the local ungulates (at least, no more so than anybody else does), so why are they hunting down the sheep? To deprive their enemies of resources. Sheep are extinct by the timeskip. It's actually really clever of them, and a really clever indication of their sentience and intelligence before it's fully verified.
"Let's get these shit-hogs!" Everything about the way Kaine and Emil interact across the entire game is perfect I will brook no argument this is objective fact.
Emotive Rectangles I wrote an essay about this before but it really bears repeating that the job the original animators did with this scene is just phenomenal. The way Weiss drifts, flits, flips, fans his pages, drunkenly swerves, shoots around the room in defiance... He's a goddamn rectangle, but there is so much emotion and personality in this scene just based on the movements conveyed through a what is effectively just a box. Ten years later and triple-A titles with full facial capture don't have this much seething personality. I really have to give props to the cavia animators, wherever they wound up. That studio could really put some subtle love and care into their titles, utterly unnecessary and easy to miss but you can tell that whoever was working on it was giving it their all. The books are probably the exemplification of this, but every time I go into Seafront and visit the seals I can tell that the guy on seal duty was having just the best day. They made Emil so pretty There's an FMV cutscene right smack in the middle of the original game after the battle against Noir. I understand why it was a necessity on a technical level, but it always looked pretty out of place and a little uncanny valley compared to the rest of the graphical fidelity. That's no longer a necessity so this cutscene is rendered in-engine. I admit I was actually curious to see it redone this way and it looks fantastic. I single out Emil since he is the focal point of cutscene and because his particular high-poly model had some pretty weird difference from his in-engine model, but he and Kaine both look great. But, like, it's almost mean how pretty he is.
They made Brother Nier so pretty Yeah okay you got me he's kind of hot. Kaine's expression when she wakes up and looks him over is... significantly easier to read now. Good voice, too. (Ancient rumors tell that one of the issues with international releases of RepliCant was that they couldn't find an English VA with a voice that 'fit' Brother Nier. He sounded good out the gate but hearing him growl "Let's go TAKE CARE of those KIDS" during the thief sidequest-- I got chills. It sounds so silly but there's a kind of percolating fury to that delivery. Papa Nier was like frustrated but mostly disappointed dad; I felt like Brother was going to take care of those kids, and nobody was going to find the bodies. Younger Brother Nier just never stops looking goofy to me but Older Brother just looks great in motion, between the alterations they made to the movement and just the entire weaponry system. The distinction between the two halves of the game was always a little odd in the Gestalt version-- not odd enough to really raise eyebrows if you didn't know about RepliCant, but of course you can tell that this age gape between the optimistic doe-eyed dogooder and a man largely ruled by his fury and calloused by tragedy is what the timeskip was going for. Swab me down and call me Ishmael, it works. Younger Brother wasn't quite clicking with me-- not because of any writing or voicework issues, but I've got Papa Nier on the back of my mind and it's impossible not to compare and contrast the delivery and dialogue between the two. I know that this is intentional, too; Younger Brother is supposed to be that happy-go-lucky video game protagonist, always doing the right thing and helping people, in order to contrast against the man he becomes. Even just edging into Part II the effect is dramatic and it recontextualizes Younger Brother into a much more effective overall character. And let me reiterate, I enjoyed my time with Younger Brother just fine, I have no issues with him. But he's up against Well Meaning Big Dummy Part I Papa Nier. No contest. And I'm excited to see where Older Brother goes from here.
Speaking of voices I mentioned this before but the delivery on the character's lines is different. The entire game was re-recorded and quite a few lines are still pretty similar to the original, but there are some that are... definitely different. Part of this is a difference in the relationship between characters based on their life experience and ages-- Weiss is much more of an ass to Younger Brother but has a much more even respect for Older Brother (neither of which are like the rapport he established with Father). Some of Kaine's lines feel more aloof, dismissive, and almost tired in the front half of the game. I haven't really gotten to a point to dig into Emil's rapport with the other characters, but the delivery feels more hesitant and uncertain (which I think is more in line with his Japanese VO, but I'm prefacing that on an untrained ear and a presumption rather than recent memory). It's been interesting to see not just where hey adjusted dialogue (and how-- there are some lines that didn't need to be rewritten), but also how they adjust tone and delivery. Dealing with Younger Brother is one thing, but as I said, I'm very excited to see what's different in the second half, especially being much more familiar with that part of the game. Speaking of Voices! Halua got dialogue! I... preferred when it was inferred (and the implications of "I'll always be watching over you" are borderline malicious given the results of their fusion dance, yeah THANK YOU HALUA this is GREAT). Halua's delivery also felt a little too innocent and upbeat both for the situation and when compared to her narrative voice in The Stone Flower, where she comes across as much more cynical and cold. But given what she's been through and the nightmare she's finally escaping I guess she's allowed express happiness. She's certainly earned the right to having a spoken line. No matter what. Every fuckin' time.
"Here we go." This was always a great line to kind of ease in to the officially-official start of Part II-- every time you start up a New Game+ you're greeted with Emil musing about his conflation of Halua to Kaine, and then the phrase "Here we go". There's a lot in that one line. On a personal level he's grounding his thoughts in the moment and steeling himself for what comes next and pushing through his pain and sadness and fear. Whatever Nier told him in the facility he's still terrified, desperately terrified, that Kaine -- who was the one who told him his life had meaning -- is going to reject him. And why wouldn't she? Ultimately they don't know each other, not really. He understands at that moment that his relationship with Kaine is based on confused memories of his sister, that maybe the bond he thought they established isn't actually real. As soon as he frees Kaine he's going to have to confront her, like this, and how could she ever-- she won't-- but he can't just leave her. Whatever happens next. Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. (God it matters.) "Here we go." On a meta level, that's our introduction into the second half of the game. The first half is all prologue. This is where we'll be spending the rest of our time, even to the point that 'New Game+' skips straight ahead to this moment. Now that we've finished the establishment, this is where it all builds and where it all matters. Here we go, audience. The ride starts now. You get up to this point now in Replicant. You get the same lead-in. My dumb ass even whispered "Here we go", because I can't help myself. And he says, of course he says--! "Anyway." ... ...a-anyway? What the hell kind of line is that? "Here's some deeply personal musings that are also an indication of my own discomfort as I babble to myself just to fill the void so I can stave off thinking for just a few more seconds. ANYWAY." What a... bizarre decision. Just bizarre.
Upgraded melee combat The introduction to the armored Shades always feel kind of rough-- the defenses on those Shades are significantly higher than anything you've faced and the new weapons you're given to combat them just aren't that good. (If you got lucky you could have a fully-upgraded Faith by now, which is nearly three times as powerful as the 'heavy' two-handed sword you're given; if you downloaded the 4 YoRHa pack for Replicant you've probably been able to upgrade one of those weapons once, which are also a really nice strength boost that leaves the freebie heavy swords and spears in the dust). As an introduction to the new weapon types it always feels like rough going. But then you get a chance to get decent weapons and the combat system truly opens up, and compared to the first game you really feel it. At this juncture I would always just bustle off to Facade and grab the Phoenix Spear and never look back-- the raw power compared to the rest of your arsenal coupled with the triangle dash is basically the bread and butter of the rest of the game. It's not exciting, but it's effective. No more triangle dashing, which was deeply disappointing... but both weapons definitely feel good. I am also somewhat ashamed to admit that it wasn't until now that I realized attacks weren't just about rhythmic input-- you can hold the attacks down to do different charged hits and combos depending on when you execute them in your combo, similar to Automata. I, uh... I felt a bit dumb. But hey, wow, it's a welcome adjustment and it makes all of the weapon types feel equally valuable for different purposes. I never liked using the heavy blades in the original release because they just felt too slow for the damage output they did, even if their 'point' was mostly to sheer off armor (and they definitely felt too slow for use in crowd control). Now they're still heavy and slower, but not to the point that you're basically leaving yourself open just trying to attack. Spears now do crazy sweeping combos and multi-hits. Both of these properties were borrowed from Automata and I find myself prioritizing melee combat and almost forgetting I have magic because honestly it just feels intuitive and fun. I feel like Kaine and Emil might have gotten a power boost as well? Not that I can really confirm this but going into some of the Junk Heap rooms I'd focus on killing a few robots in the corner and then turn around and just see a field of item drops and no more robots. Don't take my word on that, of course, but they felt a little more effective, and a placebo effect is still an effect. "You're staging a protest? That's fun!" Emil. Rebel without a cause. Will not hesitate to kill you if you trespass on his property. (Might explain the statues in the courtyard, actually.) I'll have to double-check this dialogue because I definitely remember more of a melancholia before we get to roasting marshmallows. I think Papa Nier actually offers to talk to/implicitly threaten the villagers to let them in the Village whereas Brother offers to sleep outside with them... which is actually kind of funny. In the former it comes off as Emil and Kaine maybe kinda-sorta not wanting to be allowed in the Village for their own reasons (they're not happy reasons but they're reasons nonetheless) and reassuring Father that no, it's okay, it's fun! The latter is almost telling Brother to stay inside because he'll ruin their sleepover.
(They're absolutely having giggly girl talk about him outside the gates, 100%.) they ran over the seals All I want in Seafront is to enjoy the music and run out to the big beach and hang out with the last living seals and they put a fucking pirate ship on top of them. Oh, wow. Gideon. Wow. OG Nier featured a Gideon that tried to keep himself together and then had fits of mania. You'd be concerned about him during some of the dialogue but generally speaking he came across as... functional. The delivery on all of his lines is now so insanely murder bonkers, like every line he's addressing you like you're already chained to the wall of his serial killer dungeon and it's glorious. I don't know if the distinction between the games is deliberate (in that Gideon in Gestalt was just more even-keeled between his 'rip 'em apart' snarlings and was always just totally nutso in RepliCant) but I do appreciate it. It's a good mirror to Brother Nier's own anger, which only ever seems to be mollified when he's talking to his friends (even kindly accepting sidequests there's a pretty consistent -- not universal, but consistent -- air of barely-bridled frustration). The other characters that Brother encounters are various reflections of himself if things had just been a little different-- Gideon was a representation of the kind of obsessive madness that would have eaten Brother alive if he hadn't had his network of support. Gideon's constant fury and bloodlust even bleeds into him just saying "What can I do for you?" He has no anchor to keep himself sane, nobody to stay human for; he's all mania, all anger, and he only takes any real interest in Brother on his return because he sees an opportunity to act out his vengeance. After defeating Beepy and Kalil he even goes so far as to not only blame Beepy for killing Jakob, but for also killing their mother, which is patently insane but really speaks to how far his justifications and fury have taken him. Papa Nier responds to his anger toward Beepy by basically backing away slowly and saying "Oookay then". Brother, however, actually commiserates; "That's enough. [...] We get it. We really do." This is definitely one of those moments where Brother's context works better than Father's; he absolutely sees himself in Gideon. He completely understands him and sympathizes. He recognizes the madness of his own quest, he sees where it could take him, and there's a resignation when he speaks to Weiss: "Revenge is a fool's errand." "...yeah." Papa Nier has a similar delivery and similarly implies that he understands how terrible his quest is, but there's something decidedly haunting in Brother's sympathy. Also just verifying something on the wiki and this bit of 'Trivia' really jumped at me:
Gideon is the only character to only cause the deaths of other characters. In his case, he caused a platform to crush Jakob and ordered the deaths of P-33 and Kalil, with P-33 surviving.
Metal AF.

The phone ringing startles you as you’re sitting on your couch, a true crime documentary on the television as the soundtrack to your night of grading essays. There’s still half a stack of essays to slog through, and only one more glass of wine left in the bottle on your coffee table.
You glance at the screen of your phone, frowning at the name you see.
“What’s up, Nanami?” The phone rests against your shoulder as you scribble a barely-passing grade on the paper in your hand.
“You busy?”
Well, this isn’t going to end well.
“I’m almost out of wine and have twelve more essays to suffer through before I can call it a night.” Nanami chuckles at your predicament. “So, yeah, I guess you can say I’m a bit busy. Why?”
Nanami sighs and you can just see him rubbing his temple as he tries to work out a way to ask you something he knows you aren’t going to like.
“Spit it out, would ya?” you probe with a sigh.
“Satoru wants your help with a mission.”
Your frown immediately deepens. “I already told him that I’m not a sorcerer.”
A muffled series of thwumps and thuds force you to hold the phone away from your ear before a new voice chirps through the device.
“Technically, you only told me that you have asthma,” Gojo says brightly. “You didn’t say anything about not being a sorcerer.”
Your eyes narrow at nothing in particular. “Why doesn’t it surprise me that you’re the kind of guy who likes to point out technicalities?”
Gojo chuckles, the sound a warm caress through the phone. You’re fairly certain that’s mostly the wine reacting, but you aren’t taking any chances.
“Regardless, let me make it perfectly clear to you: I am not any kind of practicing, jujutsu sorcerer,” you say slowly, clearly. “I received enough training to keep my energy in check and help out where I can as a Window since I work at a school and know what to look for. Now, if you’d be so kind as to return my cousin’s phone, I’d like to tell him to make himself available for you since he is sorcerer.”
A soft grunt sounds as you listen to the phone getting passed back to Nanami. “I’m sorry, Kaya. I tried explaining—where the fuck are you going? Satoru!”
As he shouts Gojo’s name, a polite knock sounds at your door. You leap to your feet, your heart thundering in your chest.
“Kaya? Kaya, are you there?” Nanami’s voice sounds tired. “Do not open that door. You give this guy a fucking inch and he takes a mile.”
“Are you telling me that the random-ass person knocking on my door right now is Gojo?” you ask tersely. “Because I’m pretty fucking sure I live a solid distance away from your school.”
Nanami sighs and mutters a series of graphic swears as the person at the door begins to knock on the door to the beat of “Mary had a Little Lamb.”
“I can’t tell you if he’s being so stubborn because he genuinely needs your technique, or if he’s only thinking with his cock, but you do not have to answer that door.” You snort, not buying for a second that Gojo has any intention of giving up so quickly.
“I’m never having dinner with you again,” you hiss into the phone before hanging up. As far as you’re concerned, this is all Nanami’s fault for allowing Gojo to crash their weekly dinner. You toss the phone on your couch before stomping towards the door and yanking it open to reveal a casually-dressed Gojo leaning against the jamb with a grin.
“What the fuck do you want?” you ask with thinly-veiled hostility. Gojo ignores the venom and grins wider.
“I have to say,” he remarks, “I think you’ve got the most beautiful eyes when you’re irritated.”
You haven’t wanted to throttle someone in so long, you forgot what it felt like to have your blood boil.
“What do you want?” you ask again, this time through gritted teeth.
“Your help.” Gojo tilts his head innocently as he looks at you. “Pretty please?”
The bubbling frustration with this man isn’t something you need your neighbors witnessing, so you step aside and yank him through the door, surprised that he allowed you to grab hold of him at all, considering what you know of him.
You ignore his chuckle as you stomp back into your living room and pause your documentary, knowing you’ll likely have to restart the whole thing since you missed so much thanks to the asshat currently making himself comfortable on your couch. He stretches his arm along the back of the sofa, tilting his head back to look at you.
“You’ve got a nice place for a teacher.” You stare at him. He did not just backhand compliment you. “Though, the sound proofing tiles are a little odd.”
“You’re an asshole,” you tell him with a glare. “And now that I am fully aware of the fact that you have highly selective hearing, let me say this one more time: I have absolutely no interested in joining your mission.”
“Because of your asthma, right?”
Dear fucking god, you want to punch him.
“And the fact that I’m not a fucking sorcerer. I have never and will never work as one.”
“Why not?” Gojo watches you as you sink onto a pillow on the floor at the coffee table. “Nanamin isn’t anywhere near my level and he still makes a solid living doing exorcisms.”
You look at him as you pick up your red pen. “If you had to quantify the actual size of your ego, how big would it be?”
The jab is ignored with a dismissive wave. “Your cursed technique, it’s based on sounds that you personally create, right?”
“I mean, it’s definitely bigger than your dick. There’s no way that thing is bigger than a handful of centimeters, considering the way you carry on every time I have the displeasure of seeing you.”
“But that can’t be it, because if that were the case, you would be wreaking havoc on the populace if you so much as farted.”
“I wonder what that server thought when you finally whipped it out, after doing everything she could think of to get your attention? Ha! I bet she was so disappointed.”
Gojo leans forward, his forearms resting on his knees as he grins at you. His aura is practically dancing around him; he’s loving every second of this.
“You really didn’t like her, did you?”
“I really didn’t care either way.” Half-truth, but who’s counting? “I just got tired of seeing her tits every time she came to check on us. That, and her aura was starting to make me motion sick with the undulating and buzzing.”
He raises a white brow. “You can see auras?”
“I heard them first. I’ve always been sensitive to sounds.” You frown at the introductory paragraph of the paper in your hand. Did you students even read the assignment? “I only started to see the auras after training with Nanami.”
“I’ve never heard of someone hearing an aura... what’s mine sound like?”
You look up at him, surprised to see that he’d taken off the sunglasses he’d been wearing to pin you with those eyes. Why is someone so far up their own ass this hot?
Setting down your pen, you take a breath to center yourself, allowing your own aura to reach out to his. You let your eyes guide the edges of your aura along the edges his, like a bow across a string. If Gojo feels anything, he doesn’t say; he just watches you with an intense expression.
At some point, you let your eyes meet his, and that’s when his aura begins singing to you.
“You sound like a cello’s mid-range, that sweet spot of notes on the G and D strings.”
“What does your sound like?”
The question throws you off. No one has ever asked about yours before. It’s not that you don’t know how your aura sounds, but rather, you aren’t sure how to explain what you hear.
“It sounds like me,” you reply plainly. “I sound like... just me.”
He regards you quietly before letting his cheek rest on his fist. His gaze softens as he looks at you, sending whatever traces of annoyance you feel towards him scattering into nothing.
“There have been reports of a cursed human loose in a residential area outside of Hidaka. Some sightings have it listed as a child, others say it's a few adults. But all the witnesses agree that whatever it is, it’s luring children from the area into the woods.”
“Is this the part where you tell me why Six Eyes needs me to find some cursed human in the woods?”
He shrugs. “I’m not good with kids.”
You snort. “You’re a teacher.”
“And you’ll notice that my students are well above the age of 6 years old.”
“So are mine.”
“Are you always this stubborn?”
“Pot, meet kettle.” You set down your pen and look at him seriously. “And before you throw my whole aura-sight at me, I’ll point out that you seemed to have no idea that I could see auras until a few minutes ago. So, tell me why you want my help on a mission you and your students are more than equipped to handle on your own?”
Gojo leans back against the couch once again and sighs. You let silence creep into the space between you. His aura isn’t singing anymore, but it isn’t agitated, so you haven’t totally pissed him off. Yet.
“I want you to lure the curses out and get them to bring the missing kids with them.” One of his hands slides through his hair. “At least, that was my initial idea. But, if you can see and hear auras, that might help us get the kids out before shit goes south with the curses.”
You frown. “That original plan assumes that I can control more than one curse at a time, which isn’t the most fool-proof, either. I’m not being modest when I say that I’m not a sorcerer, I’m being honest. Your dark-haired student’s aura is more powerful than mine, and he wasn’t even trying to let me see his aura.”
Gojo considers you quietly, his blue eyes shimmering in the artificial light of your apartment. You’re tempted to examine the shifting colors of his irises up close, until you remember that you know better than to let your body anywhere near a man that self-confident.
“I’d say you’re an upper Grade 3, just as you are now. Properly motivated, maybe a Grade 2. Still, that’s more than enough to draw out a few curses. I don’t need you to exorcise them, only get their attention and make them a bit more docile for the kids to take out.”
“You really aren’t going to let this one go, are you?” you ask him, sighing as you rest your chin on the heel of your palm. He flashes you a bright grin, sending an armada of butterflies up your stomach and into your throat.
“Nope.”
You lean back on your palms as you look at him. You have no interest in telling him that you’ve already decided to help since there are missing kids involved, so you let him watch you watch him. Because, maturity.
“And what do I get out of this? Other than a potential asthma attack?”
His grin slips into a smirk. “What do you want?”
You raise your brow, knowing full well what he’s insinuating. “I don’t touch sloppy seconds, thanks. I was thinking more along the lines of a few bottles of really nice wine, or maybe an expensive whisky. Or, if you’re feeling really guilty about triggering my asthma, never asking me to help with your job ever again.”
“Since I’m feeling generous, why don’t you decide after you’ve helped me out? You know, see how much effort you have to put in and get the most reward for your buck.”
You don’t trust that new sparkle in his eyes as you agree to his terms.
You only agree to meet Gojo and the others after school the next day because the sooner you’re done with this favor, the better. Then, you can get back to watching Netflix specials on serial killers and grading piss-poor essays on the Baroque movement in peace.
The grounds of the Tokyo Jujutsu High School are well kept, despite there being so few students enrolled. The spans of the campus practically begged to be bustling with chattering students, but all it gets is the occasional grumpy alumni and sporadic admissions.
It wouldn’t hurt to plant some flowers either.
“I told you she wasn’t going to show up with a flute or drum!” You glance over your shoulder and see Gojo leading the two boys from before and a new addition, a girl with down-turned eyes and a bored expression.
Gojo inclines his head towards you by way of greeting. “Kaya, you saw these two yesterday, Yuji and Megumi.” His thumb points out Pinky first, then the dark-haired kid whose temperament you like. “This is my other first-year, Nobara.”
You wave with a polite smile, your teacher’s smile. “Nice to meet you all.”
Nobara peers at you a little longer, her eyes sweeping up and down your outfit with analytical eyes. You couldn’t wait to hear what a sixteen year old has to say about your clothes. You chose to swap out your black jeans for a sturdy pair of athletic leggings to increase mobility, though you are acutely aware of how tight the pants are, especially around your ass.
You pick at an invisible lint on the sleeve of your jacket. Gojo is doing a marvelous job of surveying your… assets.
“I want you to design our new uniforms,” she declares boldly. You blink in surprise since that is definitely not what you were expecting. Not sure what’s so stunning about leggings and a rarely-used running shirt, even if it has Gojo eyeballing your butt with enough heat to send his aura in languid waves around him.
“Thanks, I think.” You slip on your leather jacket and look over at Gojo with an arched brow. “Are you finished gawking? I have classes to teach tomorrow, and there’s nothing worse than trying not to make a bunch of teenage girls cry when you’re too tired to tell them their god-awful piano composition sounds like something out of a third-rate anime.”
If they thought Nobara offers up some hot takes, they need to see you with less than six hours of sleep and a full day of classes on the horizon.
Gojo chuckles as he rubs his lower lip with the pad of his thumb. There is something unfairly sensual about the motion, and extremely predatory. Frowning slightly, you turn away and hand the kids the the earplugs you had stuffed in your pocket before you’d left the apartment.
“What’re these for?” Yuji asks, inspecting the bits of foam like you just handed him cocaine. .
“Maestro, here, uses a cursed technique rooted in sound.” You feel Gojo sling his arm around your shoulders. “Though, seems like she didn’t bring enough for me to get a pair, too.”
You shoot him a look. “You know precisely why I didn’t bother. Now, can we please get a move on?”
Wordlessly, the kids gather around and latch onto Gojo’s jacket, and you brace yourself for the gut-punch that comes along with teleporting. Nanami graciously informed you of Gojo’s aptitude for warping after a series of threats of bodily harm that exponentially increased in severity the more he dodged your questions. In that time, you realized that Gojo’s perpetual use of Limitless could stop your technique without a thought.
You’re in the midst of replaying a particularly entertaining memory of Nanami squealing like a pig after you started to make him juggle kitchen knives when you feel a strong hand press you against Gojo’s chest by the small of your back. Sputtering with utter indignation, you glare up at the grinning man, wishing with every fiber of your being that your knee could make contact with his balls at that moment.
“Ready, maestro?”
“Fuck off, Gojo.” Yuji snickers from behind him. Gojo watches you expectantly and your glare deepens. “I’m ready.”
“There’s a good girl.”
“Dude, keep that shit up and she’s going to find a way around your Limitless to kick your ass,” Megumi mutters from the right. “And Lord knows, the majority of us will sell tickets to that show.”
You don’t hear Gojo’s reply as you're lost in trying not to hurl all over the man as he yanks your body through space. The surrounding trees whisper and rustle in the evening breeze, the low glow of the sunset making the setting feel eerie. You hope the missing kids are okay, but you’re jaded enough to know better. Rolling your shoulders, you shake off the creeping shadows of memories you’ve worked hard to ignore on a daily basis.
“You’re up, Kaya.” Gojo nods at you as he removes his blindfold, his eyes more aquamarine in the dying light. “Think you can tag the auras for me?”
“Everyone got their earplugs in?” you ask the teenagers behind you. They all respond with solemn nods, their expressions resolute. You glance at Gojo, his eyes unseeing but all-seeing as he looks out into the forest around you.
“When I start singing, Six Eyes should pick up any auras my technique hits, like sonar.” It’s been over a year since you last sang, but you’d prepped your vocal cords most of the day with hot tea and a couple shots of bourbon before heading to the school. “I’ll also be willing whatever hears me to come to me as I sing.”
He looks at you with slight concern. “How long can you sustain that?”
You set square your shoulders and look back out into the darkness ahead. “As long as I need to. My priority will be the kids, you guys can deal with the cursed human.”
He nods as you take a deep breath to settle the flurry of nerves in your stomach. Why are you so nervous about singing in front of Gojo, of all people? His opinion has never mattered to you, since the moment he crashed your dinner. Who cares if he doesn’t like the song choice or if he thinks your voice is garbage?
“Unsteady” by X Ambassadors is a go-to warm up song for you. It sits right in your chest range, so it’s easy to project as you start walking slowly into the woods. Besides, you know how it feels to beg someone, anyone for help but end up ignored instead.
Gojo’s footfalls are nearly silent as he stalks behind you, but your voice makes his aura pulse against your own. It’s a comforting feeling, lending you more courage than you were feeling, that’s for sure.
A sharp rustling to your left makes you pause, the movement too harsh and erratic to dismiss as an animal. The icy blue of the aura halos around a tiny form, the fear tinkling like a shrill bell being shaken by a child. Gojo stiffens behind you, but you raise your palm before shooing him back.
Without faltering in the song, you crouch down in the direction of the stumbling child, pulling a small handbell from your other jacket pocket. A steady, calming beat in time with your singing pulses forward, coaxing the child out slowly as her aura shifts from pale blue to a saturated cobalt.
A little girl, no older than six or seven, flies into your arms, making your stumble in your singing. She’s coated in dirt and gods know what else, clutching your jacket so tight that her tiny knuckles turn white.
“You caught the culprit’s attention,” Gojo chuckles as you soothe the frightened child into letting go of your jacket. She clings to your leg when you stand, her snot and tears soaking into your leggings. You try not to cringe, but Gojo catches your obvious distaste and laughs, earning him a glare.
“There’s a cluster of black auras there,” you tell him quietly, gesturing further into the woods, to the east. “I can see them, but they’re silent.”
He hums as he nods, stroking his chin thoughtfully before he looks at you again. His eyes flick to the little girl, whose grip on your leg is starting to get painful, and it’s in that moment you realize two things.
First, that you get to tell Gojo, “I told you so.”
Second, in relation to the first, the tiny girl death-gripping your leg has an aura that is shrieking and melting into an opaque black.
Fuck.
Without a second thought, you send a surge of your cursed energy into your aura, ballooning it up rapidly. You swing the handbell down sharply, a clear, piercing note with the demand to be let go striking the tiny cursed human, tossing her away from you a good 30 yards.
A dull ringing pulses in your ears as you struggle to keep your balance. You shouldn’t have used that move so soon out of semi-retirement.
Arms scoop you up before you hit the ground. Muffled voices bicker as you barely hold onto your consciousness, but they fade away quickly as you’re overtaken with another bout of nausea that pulls you back towards consciousness. You try to move, but the arms hold you tighter against what you learn is Gojo’s chest.
“Easy, easy.” His breath warms your face as he calms you. “Shocked you’re not passed out yet.”
You don’t have the energy to remind him that he’s the pot and you’re the kettle when it comes to stubbornness. Based on the bits and pieces of the room you can see through still-blurred vision, he had warped you both back to your apartment.
He lays you down on your bed, checks your pulse, then slips out of the room long enough to get you a glass of water and a banana.
“I told you I wasn’t a sorcerer for a reason,” you mumble as you push yourself up slowly. The dizziness is gone, but exhaustion presses against your bones at this point. Gojo sits on the edge of the bed as he watches you sip at the water and peel the banana.
“Your stamina is shit, yeah. But you know what you’re doing.” You break apart the banana bite by bite. Like hell you’re going to eat an obviously phallic fruit in front of a man with the maturity level of a teenage boy. “I’d say with a bit of training, you could hold your own without passing out again.”
You shoot him a look that hopefully conveys how little interest you have in making that a reality. He only gives you a small smile before he stands.
“Better go check on the kids, make sure they didn’t completely fuck that simple exorcism.” He pauses at the bedroom door, lifting his blindfold just enough to look at you with one eye. “Thanks for your help, maestro. Think about what you want for compensation. I’ll be in touch.”
He winks at you with that one azure eye before he just blinks out of sight. Your thoughts start replaying your time in his arms, a coveted location, you’re sure. He smelled like cedarwood and eucalyptus, but on the designer fragrance side of the spectrum, which surprises you considering how boring his attire generally is.
Sighing, you fish your phone out of the inner pocket of your jacket and swipe it open. No new messages, but a couple of missed calls from Nanami. You’re too tired to both giving him a lecture, so you just tell him he’s your personal chauffeur tomorrow until you can pick you bike up from the school.
And if you even THINK about sending Gojo in your place, consider yourself a eunuch the next time I see you, got it?
You don’t bother to see if he responds. Instead, you shed your clothes and crawl back under the covers, setting a few different alarms, just in case. Yawning, you curl onto your side and let your eyes drift closed, willing your brain to just shut the fuck up with the semi-intrusive thoughts. Falling asleep now would get you a solid 7.5 hours, more than enough for another round of compositional reviews.
I wonder what he thought of my singing…

Unexpected Switch (Part Four)
Summary: Reader starts building relationships with the team members... except JJ.
A/N: I feel like this part is kind of boring but it is all very necessary. I hope you all enjoy.
https://90spumkin.tumblr.com/post/631510673272274944/summary-yn-struggles-with-the-memories-of-the
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Fem! Reader
Warnings: slight swearing, panic attack, talk of mental health, criminal minds talk
Word Count: 2487
Spencer stood in the doorway to Emily’s office watching y/n sleep. She looked so peaceful lying there with her hair splayed out around her, and her soft snores feeling the room. He had his head laid against the wall lost in thought. He probably looked creepy to anyone passing by, but he had to come check on her as soon as he got to work. Emily had sent out a text late last night informing the team that her and y/n would be staying there for the night, but that the team needed to be at work no later than 7 am for a debriefing of the new information Garcia had found.
Someone clearing their throat behind him made Spencer jump and hit is head on the wall with a loud thump. He turned to see that it was Luke who was giving him an implying smirk. Spencer went to scold him when he heard movement coming from y/n. She had sat up and was rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She smiled at Spencer and he felt his heart stop for a split second. Why does she have this effect on me?
She stood up and stretched, her shirt raising enough for a strip of skin above the waistband of her pants to show. Luke cleared his throat again snapping Spencer out of his thoughts once again.
Y/n smiled again, “Good morning boys.” Both men smiled back and muttered a ‘good morning’. Spencer cleared his own throat trying to gather himself before he said, “We have 20 minutes before we all have to gather to go over everything if you want to use the showers in the gym beforehand. Emily left and brought you back some fresh clothes.”
While he was telling her all this Luke handed her the bag Emily had instructed him to give her. “Here you go. I’m going to run a few things by Garcia and try not to get on her bad side first thing this morning. I trust you’re in good hands with Spencer.” He gave y/n another smile and Spencer a knowing look as he passed him going out the door.
Spencer chose to ignore Luke and instead told y/n, “Follow me.”.
The walk to the gym was a trip made in mostly silence. Spencer could not help but to glance at y/n every few seconds trying to get the courage to start a conversation.
Y/n saw him of course, “Go ahead and ask me whatever it is you are wanting to ask.”
Spencer could only wonder how she is so calm, no anxious twitch or sudden burst of tears. Emily had said the first thing she did was ask to sleep after receiving the new information from Garcia. Instead he asked, “Do you need to make a phone call to anyone? I’m sure someone is worried about you.”
Y/n just laughed but her laugh was full of sadness, “No one is worried about me. I have no home do to losing my job because some asshat though trying to put his hand up my skirt was a good idea, both my degrees going down the drain. The friends I have been staying with are drunk constantly and barely have a clue I’m there to begin with. My adoptive parents died in a car accident two years ago, and my twin sister I didn’t know existed is a murdering psychopath. So, I think I will pass on that phone call.”
Spencer stopped which made y/n stop. He placed his hand lightly on her shoulder, the germs there only an afterthought, “Y/n, you do not have get so defensive not with me. I can only imagine what you are going through, but I would like to be your friend because you are going to need one to get through this.”
Y/n looked a little shocked at Spencer’s kindness but nodded and gave him a small smile. Spencer nodded back and began walking again. Once they had reached the showers Spencer said, ‘I’ll be right here. And don’t worry they can wait a few minutes for us to get back.”
Y/n nodded once more and started to walk towards the showers when she stopped and turned and said, “Thank you Dr. Reid.”
He was caught off guard by the sweetness in her voice where anger had been not but minutes before. He gathered his thoughts and instead of a traditional response he said, “Please call me Spencer.”
She smiled and turned and began to walk away, but not before he heard her whispers, “Thank you Spencer.” And he would think about the way his name sounded coming from her lips the rest of the day.
-------
I stood looking in the mirror after showering and changing. Making it through without a panic attack was a relief. The woman that stared back at me was looking less and less like myself every day.
“Y/n, you okay in there? Emily just texted they are ready for us.” Spencer’s voice rung out through the room. He always has such a stern way about him since I met him, but something about they way he smiles softly and often tells me he hasn’t always been that way. Instead of answering I throw my old clothes away and make my way out the door.
Spencer clears his throat and begins the trot back towards the bullpen. Emily and I are pretty much the same build, so her black pants and red blouse hug my body in all the right places. I’m pretty sure Spencer noticed too by the blush that rose up his neck and into his cheeks. I chuckle and begin to walk behind him, enjoying my view I might add.
-------
Once we reach what Spencer called the round table room, I took a seat between Spencer and Luke and accepted the cup of coffee Garcia offered me. Not long after Emily and another woman who I had not met yet came in. The newcomer had lovely dark skin and hair that matched. She sat across from me between Matt and JJ. Emily took her place with Garcia at the front of the room and started the debriefing, “Okay so I got approval for y/n to be a consultant on this case considering she has worked in the justice system and has the psychology certifications. However, anything in the field is off limits unless I see fit otherwise, is that clear?”
There were nods and sounds of agreement from everyone around the table. Emily then took her seat at the table allowing Garcia to go over the major points of the case and the information she had found on my biological family.
“Okay you lovely crime fighters. So, what I found on sweet y/n family is nothing but sad. They were on their way home from the hospital only a week after y/n and her sister were born, when a drunk driver lost control and hit them. Almost identical to what happened to her adoptive parents. Only ones to survive were the two babies which local PD said it was nothing short of a miracle. Now the official police report can be found in the files on your tablets saved for our Boy Genius.” Garcia took a breath meeting my eyes to see if I was okay in which I gave her a swift nod before she continued. “Now about y/n’s sister. They were both put in the foster system with no next of kin able to take them in. Y/n was 3 years old when she was adopted, and well her sister grew up out of the system. That is where her trail goes cold except the paperwork, she had done to get her name changed.”
I finally say something when I asked, “Garcia what was her name and what is it now?” I wasn’t ready to look at file in depth.
She gave me a soft small before saying, “Oh it was Sarah Jones and now it is Tessa Delarosa, but we’re pretty sure she has used alias over the past few years which is why she has no paper trail.”
Emily spoke up next, “Okay Garcia, pull up everything we have so far on the murders.”
Penelope nodded towards her boss and pulled up the picture of all 14 victims. Rossi glanced my way and said, “Y/n I hate to be the one to say this, but it looks as if the victims are surrogates for you.” The new comer who I have yet to learn her name kept on with the profile, “There could be many reasons behind that but the fact that these victims show signs of over kill I have to say there’s anger behind her reasoning.”
JJ was next to speak, “She probably feels anger for being left behind in the system or for being forgotten by her sister. There’s many things that could play into this.”
Luke added the next part of the profile,” Her jumping state lines and killing within different races shows she smart it kept the police off her trail this long, but it looks like she was making her way to Massachusetts so that plays back into y/n being the ultimate target.”
Emily ended the briefing with, “Okay Spencer I need you to work on a geographical profile since we know she what her end game is we just need to figure out where her next stop is. Garcia, I need you to work on finding out her alias and any other information you can dig up. JJ and Rossi, I want you to get on the phone with corner and have them send over the report and then compare them to the other victims. Tara, Matt, and Luke I need you guys to talk to the families of the victims see if anything had changed the last couple of days involving the victims. I’ll be in my office talking to the foster home the girls were in.”
Once the team dispersed to do their jobs, I felt a hand on my should, it was the lovely newcomer. She stuck out her hand which I took in a firm handshake, “Hi I’m Dr. Tara Lewis, but please call me Tara.” I smiled and nodded not trusting myself to speak after hearing all I did for the second time. She continued on with sitting in the chair Spencer occupied moments ago, “I can’t imagine what you are going through, but I just want to offer you a listening ear if you find yourself need to let anything go. I know I’d have a few choice words to say in this situation.” I let out a small laugh and thanked her. She squeezed my shoulder as she took her leave to go do the job Emily directed her to do.
------
I sat for a while watching Spencer work on the maps trying to pinpoint the area my sister would kill next. For most of the time I would zone out trying to remember Tessa from a young age but all I get is blanks. How could I have serial killer as a sister? Could I have prevented this? Is this my fault?
I couldn’t breathe again, my vision started going dark, but before the abyss took me fully, I felt a hand on my knee and soothing voice telling me ‘to breathe’.
I look to find Spencer in the same position as he had been on the plane. I lay my hand over his where it’s still on my knee and say, “Thank you. I am sorry you keep having to pull me from the edge like that. I keep getting trapped in my own thoughts.”
He gave me a sad smile and said, “Y/n don’t ever apologies for this. It is not something you can control, and I will never be upset for being able to help you escape the abyss.” Does this man know what his words does to me?
I squeezed his hand and we stayed like that for a few minutes before Emily came in, “Hey Spence did you- oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
Spencer stood up quickly and walked back over to his maps. I looked up at Emily and told her, “Oh hey Emily. I was wondering if I could speak to you about a few things. Something about the profile seems off and sense I’m not a profiler I wanted to run it by you.”
She gave me a nod and said, “Yeah sure thing I need to discuss somethings with you also, just meet me at my office I need to speak with Dr. Reid a moment.”
I took my leave and made my way to Emily’s office getting an eye roll of JJ as I passed.
------
Spencer watched y/n leave, worry clearly written all over his face. He wished there were some way to save her from having so many panic attacks. Emily cleared her throat and Spencer was brought out of his thoughts.
“So, you have a thing for troubled pretty woman or something?” Emily asked him with a smirk.
Spencer just scoffed at her, “I have no clue what you’re talking about. What did you need to speak to me about?”
Emily went on to ask about the geographical profile, but not without teasing Spencer a few more times before she left. He couldn’t help but let his mind wonder, could he have feelings for y/n so quickly?
------
Once Emily came back to her office, I was pacing the length of her desk lost thought once again.
“Y/n you okay? I’ve said your name like 5 times.” Emily said while taking her seat behind her desk.
“Oh yeah sorry keeping zoning out. Anyways what I was wanting to ask you is that is there anyway the reasoning behind Tessa’s murders jealousy and not just anger? The way the bodies where discovered it was almost in a humiliation type of way.” I sat down across from her bouncing my leg trying to channel my nervous energy.
She nodded, “Yes actually it is a big part of it. I spoke to the foster home you both stayed at. Tessa was not a nice child and your foster parents said she was an envious little girl all the way up until she left.” I nodded taking in everything she was saying. “Now y/n I want to take a long shot and conduct another cognitive interview but this time focusing on when you were younger.”
I looked at her with panic clear in my eyes. I do not want to have two panic attacks in less that 10 minutes of each other. “Is that even possible?”
She gave a slight shrug, “It’s difficult and not as reliable in court, but in this case, it is worth trying.”
I took a shaky breath and said, “Okay let’s dig up some memories.”

Prompt: “You are the treat, sweetheart.”
Please review here.
________________________________________
It wasn’t the worst heartbreak story Caroline had heard. But it definitely was the worst this season. The angry murder swans were an interesting plot twist though. She wiped down the bar, eyeing the clock before she announced, “Last call, everybody!”
She turned to the adorable drunk resting his head on the wet rings the bottles and glasses had left behind. Klaus had spent the evening raking his fingers through his dirty blonde curls, double-fisting shots and Ward Eights when he wasn’t berating his ex-fiancé. “So, your ex, this...um...something that sounded like ‘tater tot’, walked down the aisle, stood at the altar with you in front of a church stuffed full of your friends and family, and announced that she’s been banging your brother for months and wants to marry him instead.”
He squinted up at her, as though slowing piecing together her words. Letting out an unexpectedly boisterous guffaw, he said, “It was Tatia, actually. But tater tot is considerably more appropriate — often greasy, grows disappointingly cold, and an unpleasant aftertaste.” Fishing around in one pocket, he flashed her a devilish smirk that she would’ve found charming if it wasn’t for the bit of drool as he slurred his words, “Elijah’s welcome to her, but he’ll have to make it official without our grandmother’s ring.” He triumphantly slammed a beautiful antique ring on her bar, the neon lights making the diamonds and pearls twinkle.
Caroline let out a small gasp as she studied the delicate floral pattern the gemstones made. For some reason, she felt ridiculously pleased that Tatia didn’t get her grubby cheater’s hands on such a lovely piece of jewelry. “I know I shouldn’t ask, but morbid curiosity is winning right now. Did your other brother release the angry murder swans as a distraction just so you could steal back the ring?”
“A happy accident, love. Kol thrives on chaos and he nipped out to the reception area to let them out of the paddock just to see what would happen. I took advantage of the riot that ensued once the swans started attacking the outlandish lace train of Tatia’s dress and swiped the ring.” His smile was more of a grimace, but at least he chuckled as he said, “I escaped before I saw the worst of it, but I’ve been told that by the time the swans were under control, Tatia was wearing shredded bits of overpriced lace and feathers, and both she and Elijah were smeared in droppings.”
Giggling, Caroline squeezed another half-lemon into the shaker, adding the grenadine and topping it off with orange juice before pouring it over what was left of the rye whisky in Klaus’ glass. She tossed in a few cherries and winked as she told him, “My treat.”
He threw her what should’ve been a smoldering look, but instead his gray eyes seemed to cross slightly as he slurred, “You are the treat, sweetheart.”
She rolled her eyes, not bothering to respond to his clumsy flirting. Despite the ridiculousness of the situation, she couldn’t help the way her pulse quickened. If he had this kind of effect on her now, what was he like sober? Nope, she sternly reminded herself; he’s on the gut-wrenching rebound to end all rebounds and you stopped doing one-night stands after Mr. Hair Gel seemed waaaay more into his brother and you snuck out the bathroom window once it got too squicky.
She kept busy closing out a few more tabs, feeling the need to steamroll past the awkward silence as she cheerfully said, “So, you just hopped on a plane and decided to go on your honeymoon anyway. That’s a level of petty I can support. Mystic Shores is a tiny resort town, but you should find plenty to keep yourself busy. There’s the lighthouse, natural rock bridges, seabird sanctuary...” she trailed off when she saw how his eyes had glazed over. “Plus, lots of white sand beaches you can day drink on while watching the dolphins.”
“I knew I picked this place for a reason.” Klaus gulped down the rest of his drink, grimacing as he told her, “Remind me to teach you how to make a proper Ward Eight, love. It’s positively criminal the rubbish rye you’re peddling.”
She grabbed his empty glass, putting it in the tub under the bar. Snorting, she replied, “Yeah, yeah, just add it to the rest of your complaints about my drinks. Not that it stopped you from slamming them back as fast as I poured them.”
Klaus smirked, rising unsteadily to his feet. “A bartender should understand proper citrus techniques. Zesting citrus in advance may save time, but it dries out the fragrance and flavor you’d otherwise infuse into your drinks.”
Normally, having her bartending skills drunkenly criticized would have Caroline covertly charging an ‘asshat tax’ when she closed out the tab, but there was something about Klaus that made her more amused than angry. She’d stealthily admired his cheekbones most of the evening, and when he occasionally stretched, the muscle definition was undeniable. He wore his classic good looks with casual indifference, but a curious melancholy hung over him despite his snarky wit. There was more than just heartbreak below his surface, and she was curious to know more. Nope. Don’t get involved. It’s not your job to fix broken people.
As he continued to hopelessly fumble with his wallet, she gently pressed her palm to his forearm and said, “Don’t worry about it. It’s on the house.”
It was the first genuine smile he’d given all night, and he lurched forward, placing a sweet kiss to her knuckles. “You radiate light and beauty. I should’ve known you were are an angel, Caroline.” He stumbled out of the bar before she could speak, cheeks flushed at the way his accented voice lovingly caressed her name.
Caroline busied herself closing up the bar, barely resisting the urge to glance out the front to see if Klaus had managed to operate his ride app correctly. Not your problem. She waved off a few of the locals who invited her to the dunes to watch the sea turtle nests. They’d be hatching soon, but a bubble bath and some bad reality TV sounded much more appealing at the moment.
Lost in her thoughts, she nearly stumbled over Klaus as she took the trash to the dumpster. With a gasp, she knelt beside him, realizing he was snoring loudly and his pockets were turned inside out.
Damn it, Enzo.
“Come on, Klaus, wake up,” she hissed, lightly smacking his cheek.
With a groan of protest, Klaus managed to sit up against the dirty brick wall, mumbling, “Bloody wanker came at me, but I gave him a right show with this,” he cursed, triumphantly waving around a fist.
She helped him up, muttering under her breath, “Nice work. Although it looks like he still snagged your wallet and ring.” At his crestfallen expression, she hurriedly reassured him, “But don’t worry! I’ll give Enzo a call and we’ll fix it, I promise.”
________________________________________
When she heard the loud thump followed by an impressive string of cursing, Caroline knew Klaus finally was awake. It was the first time she’d let a drunk stay on her couch who wasn’t a local, but he was far too out of it to be a threat last night. Plus, her bartending over the years had given her an almost infallible bullshit meter. Klaus wasn’t dangerous. Just dangerously sexy. She rolled her eyes at that thought.
She’d given Enzo an earful last night for not keeping a closer watch on his crew. When he dropped off Klaus’ stuff, he gave Caroline a saucy little wink and teased, “My apologies, gorgeous. I didn’t know my mates rolled your tourist fluff.”
“Seriously?! It’s not like that — he’s just going through a rough time with his fiancé leaving him at the altar for his brother, and he doesn’t deserve getting his stuff stolen.”
Enzo whistled, a rare look of sympathy flashing in his dark eyes. “Bollocks. No wonder he went after Jeremy like a man possessed. Gave him one hell of a shiner too — it’s my new wallpaper on my phone.”
Klaus stumbled into her kitchen, looking just as adorably rumpled as he did last night. Curse her weakness for complete disasters. He squinted at the sunlight pouring in from her open windows, and winced at the cheerful whirring and hissing of her espresso machine. “Caroline?”
She blushed to the roots of her hair, ridiculously pleased that he remembered her name. “Good morning, Klaus.” She slid the cup and saucer toward him. “It’s a double shot — I figured you could use it.”
He blinked, taking a sip as he said gratefully, “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“You’re welcome. Um, so you probably don’t remember much from last night, but after I found you passed out in the alley, you kept muttering you were staying at a bed and breakfast. Which isn’t helpful when there’s one on almost every corner in this town. So, I let you crash here instead.”
Klaus gave her a small smile, rubbing his forehead as he muttered, “It’s a sad commentary on my life that I’ve been in the presence of friends and family this past week and the most kindness I’ve been shown has been from a stranger.”
“We’re not strangers,” Caroline protested with a gentle smile. “We’re just friends who haven’t finished bonding.” As she refilled his cup, she winked, “And when it’s my turn, I’m counting on you to have a very generous pour when I get left at the altar.”
He suddenly froze, rapidly patting at his pockets, and she quickly said, “Hey, no, it’s okay! I got your stuff back.” She reached into the drawer between them, pulling out his wallet and carefully setting his grandmother’s ring on top of it. “See? I told you I’d fix it.”
Letting out a sigh of relief, he pocketed his belongings, telling her, “You’re amazing, love. An angel, just as I suspected.” His gaze suddenly turned shrewd as he studied her, “You know the thief.”
“Yes. I have a friend who runs a crew that robs tourists that look like they can afford it.” At his frown, Caroline felt the absurd need to make Klaus understand. “Work here is seasonal at best for a lot of us, and Enzo kind of redistributes wealth when he can.” She held her breath, waiting for his judgement. He had swans at his almost-wedding, for fuck’s sake. His type was definitely Enzo’s favorite target.
Klaus let out an unexpected chuckle, telling her, “We should hope your friend never meets Kol. When we were in school, he set up an underground sports betting pool with the faculty and most of the staff.” Shaking his curly head in bemusement, he added, “Kol had teachers giving him passing grades just to pay off their gambling debts.”
She burst out laughing, wiping away tears as she imagined the crazy shenanigans Enzo and Kol would get into. That’s not going to happen. Klaus is on vacation, remember? His ruined honeymoon. Her smile was overly bright as she started pulling containers from the refrigerator, explaining, “My friend Matt runs the cafe down the road. I wasn’t sure what your go-to hangover food was, so I got you mine — butter biscuits and spicy sausage gravy, vanilla custard French toast, and orange juice.”
“You’ve spoiled me, sweetheart. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to repay all the kindness you’ve shown me.”
She did her best not to blush at the intensity of his gaze as he helped her set the table. They ate in companionable silence, listening to the small town slowly come to life on the street below. She waited until Old Man Gilbert’s noisy pontoon boat left the docks for the morning dolphin tour, and once the street was back to a manageable hum, she tentatively said, “Listen, I don’t know what you’re planning to do when you get back home, or if you’ve even allowed yourself to think that far ahead, but I wanted to offer you some advice.”
When he raised an intrigued eyebrow, but didn’t comment, she blurted out, “Go crazy. This is one of those moments where you can change whatever boring, expected path you’d planned out. Invite a little chaos into your life — do something wild and unexpected.”
The sudden press of Klaus’ lips to hers was just as thrilling as she’d imagined. He had her up against the cabinets with a resounding thud that seemed to fuel their frenzied kisses. The feel of his stubble against her neck was spicy-sweet pain that made her groan. Emboldened by her reaction, he dipped his head lower, running his tongue along her collarbone as he palmed her breast.
Caroline reached between them, rubbing the outline of his erection with a satisfied hum. It had been far too long since someone made her skin sing. He wanted her. And yesterday he wanted someone else. That thought alone jerked her out of their pleasurable haze. Placing a palm on his chest, she gently pushed him back, her words a bit jumbled as she panted, “That was...I mean...but we shouldn’t...”
Klaus’ cheeks were flushed as he smirked, “You advised me to do something wild and unexpected, sweetheart.”
She snorted, “Seriously? That was totally expected.” Her tone grew serious as she told him, “Klaus, you’re going through something huge right now and I’m not looking to be someone’s detour on the way back to their life.”
“You aren’t a detour — you’re a destination,” he replied. “But you’re probably right — I’ve had a bloody awful time of it. I need to get myself sorted.”
The determination on his face gave her hope; Klaus would be ok.
________________________________________
Four months later, Caroline was loading up the pushcart with kegs for that evening’s tasting room event when Enzo strolled into the supply room, wearing his serious brows. She hadn’t seen those since she’d dropped Klaus off at the airport and then sulked on Enzo’s couch for days. He’d argued that she was being stubborn and should go track Klaus down. But she didn’t want to get in the middle of his left-at-the-altar-for-his-brother drama. She refused to be someone’s second choice.
“For fuck’s sake, what is it,” she asked in exasperation, wiping the sweat at her temples with the bottom of her old t-shirt.
Frowning, he jerked his head toward the street, telling her, “Looks like some competition has moved in, gorgeous.” At her skeptical expression, he pulled her outside, pointing to a sign that proclaimed ‘A Little Chaos’ was opening soon. It looked like a bar. Right across the street from her bar. Frowning, she quickly made her way over, blinking in disbelief as she came face-to-face with a familiar devilish smirk.
“Caroline! I was just on my way to see you,” Klaus greeted her, that knowing smile making her blush despite her anger.
“You’re opening a bar. Across from my bar,” she said flatly, eyeing the exquisite, hand-lettered gold leaf sign that probably cost more than her rent. “A hipster bar,” she added, wrinkling her nose.
He chuckled as he lightly corrected her, “A speakeasy. I’ll be able to show this town how to make a proper Ward Eight.” With an impish wink, he reminded her, “Someone told me to invite a little chaos into my life. I decided to take her advice.”

“Jason what the fuck you doing in here?” Grayson growled as he noticed the death glare I was giving.
“I needed to discuss one of the accounts with you” Jacob smirked, not taking his eyes off me.
“That’s why Brad and James are about” Grayson sneered “you know you don’t come to me, ever”
“Well I couldn’t find them and this needs your attention” Jacob smiled passing a piece of paper over.
“I will deal with this later,” Grayson said, narrowing his eyes at Jacob. “I’ve got more important shit to be dealing with”
“I can see that” Jacob smirked looking at me. “Sweet sweet Lola does my brother know you are getting close with Mr Knox”
Taking a deep breath I gripped the edge of the desk, so hard my knuckles turned white and my jaw clenched trying not to make an unnecessary scene. But he was making it hard not to lunge across the room.
“I’ve told you prick” I growled “Lola is dead, she’s been dead a while and if you don’t want me to stab you again then I suggest you get the fuck out of this office and leave the grown ups to business”
To say I stabbed this prick only last night, he was crazy for trying to piss me off less than twelve hours later.
“Good to know you have turned into a little slut, I’m sure my brother will be happy to know this” Jacob coldly laughed “but wait he already knows this with you fucking Axel as well. But nice to see you are making it a hat trick”
Grayson saw how pissed off I was getting. Which means he more than likely saw the rage flash across my eyes, the steaming coming off me. He saw I was ready to kill.
“Get the fuck out of this office now” Grayson roared stepping between me and Jacob, trying to stop me lunging.
“With pleasure” Jacob laughed before walking out.
Grayson could hear the deep breaths I was taking to try and calm down. Spinning around he looked at me and instantly softened his gaze.
“So Lola aye” he said.
“Don’t ever call me Lola again asshat” I growled not looking at him. “Lola is fucking dead”
“Hey it’s okay” Grayson whispered, placing his hand on my arm. Causing sparks to shoot through my skin.
“Get the fuck off me” I growled snatching my arm from his grip, pulling my jacket tighter around my body. I felt extremely vulnerable with how he was looking at me and I hated it.
“Lola it’s okay” he whispered, taking a step closer.
“No dont fucking call me that” I snapped as the tears started to blur my vision. “Just don’t okay”
“I’m sorry” Grayson sighed. It was like a switch had been flipped.
“Lola is dead, she’s fucking dead and burried and is never coming back” I screamed as the tears finally fell. “Who the fuck does he think he is? Following me, tormenting me”
“You know him?” Grayson asked.
“I wish I fucking didn’t” I cried glaring at Grayson as he took another step closer. “I swear to god if you take another step I will bash your skull in with that paperweight”
“Charming” Grayson chuckled “but you need to calm down Red”
“No you need to back the fuck off” I growled pulling the switchblade out of my pocket.
“You don’t scare me red” Grayson softly whispered as he managed to get the knife off me without any effort at all, tossing it to the ground before he pulled me into his arms.
I did what I always did and tried to fight the contact off, but he was determined to get me to calm down so his grip didn’t falter. His hands went under the jacket as he rubbed my back trying to soothe me.
He didn’t care that I was shouting profanities, or that I was threatening to kill him or how much I hated him. He couldn’t let me stand there and explode, so he did what he could to soothe me.
Hours had passed and Grayson had finally calmed me down.
“Quit looking at me like that” I snapped looking up from the laptop. “If you have something to say just say it and stop being a pussy”
“Well I’ve never been called a pussy before” Grayson laughed leaning back in his chair.
“There’s a first time for everything I shrugged.
“My family is having an annual gala tomorrow night” he smiled.
“Good for them, want a medal” I glared “I don’t get why I needed to know that”
“Because I want you there” he smirked.
“And why would I do that?” I asked, raising a brow.
“Because you have no choice” he smirked “I will send a car for you at 6pm sharp”
“I have no choice in this do I?” I sighed.
“Nope, but if you listened I just said that” he smirked, biting his bottom lip “and where something a bit less you know revealing”
“And what is wrong with revealing?” I smirked leaning forward giving him a view of my cleavage, watching as he squirmed in his chair.
“I didn’t say there was anything wrong did I?” He winked before muttering under his breath “I don’t want anyone else to see your body”
I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know if he meant to say the last part or whether he knew I had heard him. So I just nodded turning back to work.
The day had been a shit show and I couldn’t wait to get home, take a hot shower and chill out. But as soon as I walked into the house I knew that wasn’t going to happen as I heard Jacob laughing from the living room.
I really didn’t have the patience to deal with him. Not after earlier.
“Nice to see you again, Red” he smirked, adding emphasis to my name. “Good day at the office”
“Can’t say the same thing” I spat. “And I don’t know was it a good day Jason”
“Wouldn’t you like to know sweetheart” he winked.
He made my skin crawl, even more so now I didn’t actually know what was going on. I needed to figure out what he was hiding and what his plans were before it was too late.
“Well I best get going I have things to do” Jacob smiled as he stood up.
“Course you do” I muttered under my breath.
“What was that red?” He asked.
“Nothing” I shrugged glaring at him.
“That’s what I thought” he laughed before he went to find Blade to say his goodbyes.
As I was hanging my jacket on the hook I felt a presence behind her, one that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand.
“Don’t worry little red” Jacob hissed “we shall be seeing each other again very soon”
“Back the fuck off” I spat, clenching my jaw.
“Time is running out for you darling” he laughed sending a chill down my spine.
I was never one to get scared but what he said got to me. I needed to find out his plans and fast.

Promises and Threats and the Kisses in Between
a/n: how is it that the one fic that I’m really not sure about is also my longest one? i’m a clown, that’s how. dedicated to mom and all the Makki simps out there. lmk how to better characterize our good boi :’(
notes: it might not be v clear but this is a college!au technically. i did not re-read this at all so apologies in advance. i’m also the worst at tenses ugh! requests are open :) find my masterlist here
pairing: hanamaki takahiro x fem!reader | genre: minor angst (w/lots of fluff) | warnings: swearing | word count: 2,618 (edited: 11/12/20)
The odd thing about being sad is that there were different types of sad. There was the kind of sad that had you screaming into a pillow for release. There was the kind of sad that had you feeling like someone had scraped your throat with sandpaper and had forced you to chop onions for hours. And then there was the kind of sad that left you feeling hollow, amiss. At first, you might think that you’re having an off day or that you’re simply in a bit of a ‘funk’. But then, as the day drags on and nothing -- not even mindlessly binging a new season or the same one you’ve seen a million times -- offers you a sense of fulfillment, you come to understand that you’re experiencing a kind of sad.
That kind of sad is one that pulls you in like a siren’s call, subtle and sweet, almost, until you notice that your head is sinking under water and your hand is desperately clutching at nothing but air. It’s the kind of sad that you suffer quietly, settling over you without rhyme or reason. The kind of sad that’s like water in a pot. Once it’s hot enough, it comes boiling over, raging and uncontrollable until someone turns off the heat.
You were feeling that kind of sad -- you had had a rough day to say the least.
And it wasn’t anything in particular that had sent you spiralling. Rather, your insecurities that you’d locked away neatly had sprung free like Pandora’s box, crawling and fighting and clawing their way out, smiling demons emerging victoriously from their solemn slumber. You had tried for hours to ignore them, flinging yourself into meaningless tasks. When that didn’t work, you tried shoving them back inside. Needless to say, that also did not work.
Which is how you found yourself staring at your phone, Hanamaki Takahiro’s contact glaring up at you. You had been like that for a few minutes, apparently hoping that some spirit would possess you and just push the damn call button for you already. But, you sighed, it seemed like you would have to find the courage to do it yourself. And it’s not like you should even need the courage! This asshole was your best friend of nearly ten years, whether he or you liked it or not, and there shouldn’t be a single problem in pushing that fucking button.
And yet, that was another thing about this kind of sad. It made you feel utterly, hopelessly, simply… alone.
But you had more faith in your friendship than what any kind of sad could tell you otherwise.
You pushed the damn call button.
“Yo,” Hanamaki picked up on the third ring. “What’s up, shithead?” In the background you heard guns blazing and dramatic music swelling to its climax.
You chuckled weakly, doing your best to reply as usual. “Nothing much, ugly.”
“Whoa, you okay? That had none of your typical asshat-ery to it.” Leave it to Hanamaki to notice that your insults had less bite than normal.
“Maybe I’m feeling nice,” you tried to cover.
“You? Being nice? To me?,” Makki questioned and you could hear his teasing smile, “Never.”
“Like anyone would ever be nice to a moron like you,” you heard someone in the background say. Matsukawa, maybe.
“Makki! We’re in the middle of a movie, put the phone away!” You could tell immediately from the nickname and the ever present whine that it was Oikawa which meant that it was definitely Matsukawa from before which meant that Iwaizumi was also present.
“Oh, shit, sorry. I forgot you had guys’ night or whatever the hell Oikawa makes you call it,” you apologized, tugging at the hem of your sweatshirt. On second thought, it might have been Hanamaki’s. It was certainly large enough to be.
You heard Hanamaki move, the background noise growing more distant. “Nah, don’t worry about it. He’s making us watch some stupid fucking alien movie that I swear he’s seen, like, fifteen times.”
“This is only my eighth time, jeez!”
Oikawa yelped as Iwaizumi undoubtedly hit him. “Shut it, Trashykawa.”
“Atta boy, Iwaizumi,” Makki cheered, drawing himself further from the noise. You heard a click of a door, assuming he had found a separate room. “So? What’s up?”
“Oh. Nothing,” you half-lied. There was something wrong, you supposed, you just didn’t know what.
“Bullshit,” Hanamaki said firmly, “you’re a terrible liar. Something’s bothering you and you never call unless you either need something or you had a shitty day.”
You scoffed. “I call you just to call you!”
“Last time you called me you asked me to get you a meat bun and you hung up before I could say anything,” Makki reminded you, amusement clear in his voice.
“Okay, well,” you said sheepishly, “it worked. So… there.”
He laughed, the sound light and mischievous. It never failed to make you smile, even if the smile now was small and half-hearted. “You’re such a dork.”
“Why thank you, I try.”
“Yeah, sure seems like it half the time.”
You would have punched him if he were there with you. “Hey!”
“You said it first, not me,” he chuckled. He waited for a few moments, perhaps for you to say something, but you honestly didn’t know what to say. You were sad but you didn’t know why and you felt like the whole world was against you. It was a miracle you were even able to call Hanamaki in the first place. He sighed. “Meat buns or Pocky?”
The question startled you as your brows knitted together. “What?”
“Fuck it, I’ll just bring both. I’ll be at yours as soon as I can.”
Your eyes widened as you tried to stop Hanamaki. “Hana, wait, no--”
A door opened and the background noise of the movie became clearer as Makki moved yet again. “Yo, Shittykawa! Got any Pocky?”
“Get away from my kitchen, you snack monster!” you heard the man squawk.
“Nevermind, I’ll just get it with the meat buns. Oh,” Makki seemed to remember that he hadn’t hung up on you and softly said, “I’ll see you in thirty minutes, Y/n.” And the line went silent.
“What the hell?” you whispered to yourself. You glanced outside your window, surprised that it was already dark outside, meaning that you had wasted away your entire day. You didn’t know what you expected to come out of talking with Hanamaki, but it certainly wasn't for him to ditch his friends to come see you. You sighed, flopping back across your bed and closing your eyes to take a few moments to focus on your breathing. The pilates girls on campus were always preaching about how good it was to take a few centering, meditative breaths throughout the day. Hanamaki and you constantly snickered at their bullshit but right now, you honestly felt as if you were a dam with a weak point, just waiting for that one final push to break you. So if the pilates girls were right and this whole centering bullshit ended up not being complete bullshit and it didn’t hurt to just breathe -- what the hell, might as well try something. All of your previous attempts turned out to be useless, so what harm could deep breaths do? You honestly were just hoping to keep your mind occupied until Hanamaki apparently showed up on your doorstep, ditching his old high school teammates he only gets to see every now and then in favor of coming to see your mopey ass. He just saw through you so easily -- a spy career was out of the cards for you, you mused -- that it was almost infuriating. All because the usual insult that you fling his way sounded a little less bitchy. Damn him and his stupidly keen intuition.
The breathing thing must have worked because, before you know it, your door is opening and Hanamaki is calling out a casual “Yo!” as he lets himself in.
You groan, forcing yourself to get up and actually greet him. He’s in your kitchen, shuffling through the fridge to find the beer you keep for him hidden in the back. You can tell he’s been sweating, beads of it lightly dripping down his temples. “You stink, ugly.”
Makki turns around beer in hand, lifting an eyebrow at you. “Nice to see you, too.”
“You’re sweating, what else am I supposed to say?”
He rolls his eyes, clutching dramatically at his heart. “I ran here from the station and I even brought you food and this is how you repay me? Some friend.” He gestures to the bag sitting on your countertops. “You’re welcome, by the way,” he adds, sipping from his beer.
"Hana, you didn't have--"
Hanamaki huffs, lazily waving your words away. "Yeah, yeah, but food always helps when you're feeling down and you've been nagging me to get you meat buns for the past two weeks." He gave you a pointed look. “So consider this as me caving. I even got you Pocky, too.”
You persist, "Still--"
"Listen," he sighed, glancing at you, his features almost bored, "I know you're sad and there's nothing wrong with a guy wanting to be there for his best friend, now is there?"
(Your heart did a weird thing and you knew it was because he had called you his best friend but you had always been that and would continue to always be that, so what was the problem?)
You shifted your feet, tugging at the hem of your shirt. "Well, no, but guys night--"
"Whatever, I see those guys every month,"
You quirked your brows. "You see me almost every day, Hana, we go to the same college."
"Yeah, but I actually like you instead of those dweebs. Plus, you’re sad. I’d be a dick if I just ignored that." Hanamaki made his way over to your couch, perching onto the arm, facing you and nursing his stolen drink.
You crossed your arms as you leaned against the counter. “You’re really annoying for being able to do that, by the way.”
“For being able to do what?”
“For being able to tell that I’m sad! Sometimes a girl just wants to be sad by herself.”
Makki quirked his brow. “You called me, princess.” You swallowed the heat that wanted to rise at hearing your best friend call you that.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have,” you choked out defiantly.
Hanamaki grins as you huff, snatching a box of the mint chocolate biscuit sticks and tearing into it, crunching one into your mouth. You glared at him as you swallowed the treat, his stupidly cute smirk doing its best to coax more warmth to flood your system.
“You’re feeling better now, yeah?” he asks, after a minute. You nod reluctantly to which he chuckles, grin never once leaving his face. “So you don’t mind if I tell you something?”
You cock your head to the side, a little confused. Usually the asshole doesn’t hesitate to ask you the most invasive questions so you can only wonder. "Tell me what?"
Makki nods, chugging the rest of his beer – you didn’t notice how little of it was left in the first place – and sets the bottle down onto the coffee table. "It's been on my mind for a really long time, now. Like, months. Years, even."
"That's surprising, I didn't know you could think for that long."
A wide grin split over his mouth. "Oh, shut it."
A matching smile lifts the corners of your mouth. "So, Hana, what has your brain so occupied? You need all the space you can get up there."
He exhales a shaky, laughing breath. You wonder why he seems so nervous. He never gets nervous. There's even a flush to his cheeks that you don't think is just from the beer. “I think," he says slowly, methodically," I’m in love with you. No, I know I’m in love with you.”
Your heart feels like it comes to an utterly abrupt stop. You swear you can feel it seize up. Heat climbs up your body, swirling throughout. Maybe you should have cleaned your ears while you were waiting for him to show up, you don't think you heard him correctly. “What?”
“My stupid fucking heart does this really stupid fucking thing where it feels like it can skip a beat when you call me ugly. My goddamn lungs feel like they are entirely incapable of breathing properly when I’m around you because I just love you so much–”
“That sounds like a personal problem,” you blurt out, wincing at your lack of self control.
Makki stops and just stares at you. Your fingers immediately find the hem of your shirt once again, playing with it to distract you from the total fool that you made of yourself. But, then again, that wasn’t anything new around Makki… who continues to just stare at you. And then he’s bursting into fits of laughter, trying to hold them in and only making the choking sounds worse.
“Did you– did you just… fucking insult me while I was confessing? Ouch,” he wheezed.
“I– This doesn’t happen to me very often, Hanamaki, how the hell else do you expect me to react?”
He quieted and for the first time when he looked at you, he looked almost shy. Almost. He was still the same calm and collected Hanamaki Takahiro that you had grown to adore. “Maybe for you to say that you love me, too?”
Your breathing hitched and you finally allowed yourself to admit that your heart always did weird things around your best friend because you were maybe, sort of, wholeheartedly in love with him too.
“Is this how you cheer girls up when they’re sad? By telling them that you love them?”
His smile is soft and kind. “Only the ugly ones.” You groaned, covering your face at his idiocy. “And the ones I get to call mine.”
Your heart fluttered as you peeked at him from beneath your hands. “There better only be one.”
“Is..." he takes a deep breath, "Is that ‘one’ gonna be you?”
You gulp underneath his serious stare, entirely unused to it. “O-Only if you don’t mind being the uglier half.”
It takes a moment for him to register your words and watching him do so is like watching fireworks explode. His whole body lights up and his face is quick to be reignited with his signature grin, his eyes beaming with joy and pride. In order to do something, anything but look at Hanamaki, you snatch up another Pocky, stuffing it into your mouth.
Emboldened by your return of his affections, Hanamaki slinks over, bracing himself against the counter with his arms on either side of you. A hand comes to gently guide your chin to look at him. Impossibly, his smirk grows wider as he bravely leans in and bites down on the half of the Pocky sticking straight out of your mouth. His eyes are alive with amusement in the face of your embarrassment. Honestly though, you couldn't tell if you were more mildly disgusted or vaguely turned on.
"If you don't fucking kiss me, I'll kiss you myself." It was impossible not to glance at his lips.
His grin widens, licking at his lips hungrily. "Is that a promise or a threat?"
"Both," you breathe, butterflies battering around your stomach like crazy.
"Nice," he grins and then you’re both diving in for a kiss, both of your hearts swelling with joy and amusement and the pleasurable insanity of being in love with your best friend.
So here’s to promises and threats and the kisses in between.

no one asked but here we are:
i am procrastinating my ass off today and i saw this on @something-tofightfor ‘s page and thought “OH LOOK A NEW WAY TO PROCRASTINATE MY ASS OFF!” So here’s some useless information about me:
1. Do you put ketchup on hotdogs?
Yes. Alllll the toppings. Onions, relish, mustard, mayo and ketchup.
2. Choice of soda?
I don’t really like soda because I don’t love sweet beverages. Ginger Ale, I guess, if I had to pick.
3. Do you put salt on watermelon?
So I never knew this was a thing until I worked at a fancy schmancy place where there was a fancy schmancy watermelon cocktail that was finished with a wedge of watermelon that had been sprinkled with kosher salt. And it was fine but seemed unnecessary. So that was my long winded way of saying: not on purpose.
4. Can you swim?
I can. I had a small above ground pool in my backyard growing up and I was in it ALL the time. I also took lessons and grew up only a few miles from the ocean, so learning to swim with currents was part of my childhood.
5. Hot dogs or burgers?
Toss up. Gimme one of each at a cookout.
6. Favorite type of food?
Tacos. All kinds. Any kinds.
7. Do you believe in ghosts?
I do. But I’m not afraid of them.
8. What do you drink in the morning?
Coffee, black with a little drizzle of honey.
9. Can you do 100 push-ups?
The most I ever did at once was 40 (not the kind some asshats call “girl pushups”- we don’t have time for why I hate that- with your knees on the floor, but with my legs all the way extended) but I could certainly get to 100 if I had a few weeks to build up to it. I couldn’t do more than 12 a few years ago.
10. Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring?
Fall and Spring over Summer and Winter. But Winter is last.
11. Your favorite animal?
Giraffes. I got to feed one once and it was one of the best days of my life.
12. Tattoos?
I have one - the number 26.2 on my right foot. I got it after I ran my first and only full marathon (marathons are 26.2 miles). I have plans for more but there are other things I need/ want to save my money for before I can spend on ink.
13. Do you wear glasses?
I sure do. I have thick coke bottle glasses and without them the world is just a bunch of formless blobs of color and light and shadow.
14. Do you have a fear?
I have a very irrational fear of something happening to someone I care about while they’re driving. If it takes someone longer than expected to get somewhere I start to panic until I hear from them. It’s a problem.
I used to be afraid of clowns and I still certainly do not like them, but now I know how to choke people so... they can come at me I guess.
15. Do you have a nickname?
Most people call me Lyss. A few family members call me Lissie. My sister calls me Sissie because she had trouble with L’s as a small child and couldn’t say Lissie, not because it’s a cute form of sister. One of my very good friends from college calls me Fro-ho Baggins because of my giant ass hair.
16. Can you change a tire?
I’ve done it once and I dented the wheel well. After that time I always ask for help. I *could* do it...but I don’t wanna fuck up my car.
17. Favorite flower?
Daisies.
18. Can you drive a stick?
No, but I want to learn. I always wanted to know that in an emergency I could drive any vehicle I needed to. But that’s not true currently. I know that soon they will probably do away with manual transition altogether but I still wouldn’t pass up the chance to learn.
19. Ever gone sky diving?
No but I really want to! Fun fact- the head instructor at my gym has done like over 100 solo jumps.
20. Kids?
Nope.
21. Favorite color?
Green. All kinds of greens.
22. Can you whistle?
Yeah, like, really well.
23. Where were you born?
New Jersey
24. Surgeries?
I had major surgery on my right foot in 2018. I had an accessory navicular bone, which is the roundish kind of bump bone on the inside of your foot, right under your ankle. I had a second one growing on top of the existing one, and it was pulling the tendons in my calf and foot in the wrong direction. It caused my arch to completely collapse and it got to the point where it was excruciatingly painful to even walk. So they removed the extra bone, cut my heel away from my foot, moved everything back into place, took out about a foot of diseased tendon, and then screwed everything in place with one LONG screw through my heel and into my foot, and one small threaded anchor holding the good tendons to the spot where they’re supposed to go. I was in a cast for...I think it was 8 weeks total, and then a walking boot for about a month after that, and then another two months of PT.
25. Shower or bath?
Shower. Baths bother me. I know they’re supposed to feel relaxing but I can’t help feeling grossed. Maybe if I had like a super nice jacuzzi tub with like jets and enough space to really lounge and stretch it would feel better, but i’d prefer a shower anytime.
26. Last song you heard?
Papillion by The Airborne Toxic Event is playing right now. Does that count?
27. How many TV’s in your home?
One.
28. Worst pain?
When the nerve block wore off the second day after the aforementioned surgery. I was so out of it for the first like 20 hours that I was home that I really couldn’t feel a thing, but then all at once it was there and it was awful. I have a VERY high pain tolerance and I was just in tears.
29. Do you like to sing?
I do! I’m not very good but I do not give a single shit.
30. Are your parents still alive?
My father is. My mom passed away 9 years ago.
31. Do you like to go Camping?
I LOVE CAMPING. I want to camp every state. And I want to do a Canadian camping adventure sooooo badly.
32. What do you binge watch?
So, binge watching is the only way I watch anything anymore. So...everything I watch I watch all in one go. Most recent binge of something new (to me) and not something I’ve seen a million times was Hanna on Amazon Prime and I frickin loved it and I love Erik and I’m not okay.
33. Pumpkin or pecan?
Neither. Sweet Potato, not pumpkin (a new development) and Pistachio not Pecan. Replace the pecans with pistachios and voila.
34. A photo of yourself.
Ew. Okay, fine, but I look like absolute garbage right now so you’re getting one from like... two months ago:
Idk why I feel the need to stick my tongue out in so many pictures. Gosh I can’t take me anywhere.
#ugh now i've run out of things to procrastinate with#i guess that means i have to write#*throws small tantrum*#fiiiiiiiiiiine.#i love how I’m like “I look like trash here have this photo of me making a trash face

Late Night Kisses... Kiara Carrera
Summary • You and Kiara were thick as thieves sharing everything with each other since you were younger. When you grew up you realised that close connection meant more than friendship to you and one late night at the beach it all comes spilling out.
Warnings • Swearing I think or maybe not. Cuteness and fluff. Slight underage drinking.
Word Count • 2.2k (Imagine)

(GIF isn’t mine, let me know if it’s yours)
KIARA CARRERA WAS as free spirited as you could get. She cared about the environment more than the whole of figure eight combined and you loved her for that. She was a kook but never forgot the throwaway fish like you. The Pogues.
You and Kie had been friends since you met her when you moved to outer banks when you were both 7. Your first meal had been takeaway from the wreck and then when your dad was picking it up you saw the girl on a table in the corner colouring. So then you convinced your dad to eat in so you could say hi to the girl who was just as enthusiastic as you at having a new friend. From then on your friendship progressed not caring about the petty classism and rivalries. She taught you how to surf and you taught her how to skateboard. You made each other laugh. You told each other everything. You cared about each other deeply. Then a few years later you met the rest of the Pogues. John B, JJ and Pope. At first there was the incessant flirting from the Maybank boy but eventually he realised you weren't interested though sometimes you played along.
Eventually Pope noticed your longing looks towards the Carrera girl, your disinterest in boys that came your way at parties, your disinterest in any of the the boys in the group.
You would make visits to the popular beachside restaurant infamous for its amazing burgers and great service. And while the other Pogues were busy admiring their food you were admiring Kie as she worked. The wavy free curls of her brown hair. Her flawless dark skin. Her beautiful smile. Her enticing chocolate brown eyes.
It hurt your heart when you saw her giving John b heart eyes or seeing her flirt with a boy at a parties Which was why you began to throw yourself into one night stands and meaningless make outs in hopes that they would rid the feelings plaguing your mind 24/7. But you didn't realise at the time, that was hurting her just as much as you.
You were in love with Kiara Carrera.
"Come on guys hurry up!" JJ yelled from HMS pogue putting the blunt between his lips straight after.
You rolled your eyes before grabbing the cooler filled with beers and snacks for Kie just before she could.
"We're coming asshat. Be patient." You yelled back at the boy who just stuck his middle finger up at you.
When you and Kiara had walked down to the boat you stepped on first putting the cooler down and were about to help Kie onto it before you saw John B extending a toned arm out towards her as she took it gracefully stepping onto the boat flushing as you felt yourself frown.
It seemed to be the smallest things you'd notice—and maybe take out of context, maybe not. You noticed the kiss on the cheek she left on the boys tanned skin or the whispering in her ear and vice versa. And the whole time you wished so badly to be in John Bs place. All while Kie wished she could be your hookups and one night stands but more meaningful.
Pope noticed your saddened expression and rubbed your arm comfortingly before you sighed and got a beer out of the cooler bringing it to your lips and downing half of the bitter chilled liquid in seconds.
"Woah, Y/N. Trying to go for the record of most drank in a millisecond?" JJ asked from the front as he sat facing all of you while John B drove the boat and Kiara sunbathed on the floor next to the Maybank boy and you and Pope sat next to each other.
“Maybe if I can get in the Guinness world records I could get enough money to move out of this place.” You muttered lowly under your breath sighing as you closed you eyes and leaned backwards where you and Pope were sitting and you let go. Your hair was flowing in the wind and your arms were held in the air as you let the air wrap around them.
That was when Kiara saw you. Really saw you.
She had always understood you. You both understood each other perfectly but in that moment she truly saw you. Free. Not stuck down by the boundaries of friendship or society. In that moment you forgot everything for a second. Your crush that was slowly crushing your heart into a million pieces. That must be why it’s called that. Because it crushed every inch of your soul until there’s nothing left or you finally move on. Heart break was a real thing.
And then you opened your eyes looking forward to see those chocolate brown eyes staring back before the girl averted them away and towards the sky above.
“Hey Pope can you pass me a beer, man?” JJ said from the front of the boat and the Heyward boy complied grabbing a bottle and throwing it to the blond who then got up onto the ledge at the front of the boat.
“Please tell me you’re not trying the trick again. It never works JJ.”
“Hey, third—or is it forth—I don’t know. Third times a charm, right?” He shrugged as you and Pope both sent each other looks. It was well over the third time he’d tried this. Practically everytime they came on this boat he’d tried it and it either ended with everyone else covered in beer or JJ covered head to toe in it.
As the boy began to attempt his party trick, beer sprayed everywhere and Kie squirmed as some went in her hair and on her stomach. You thanked yourself for sitting at the back.
“Dude, it’s not working.”
“You think.” JJ muttered defeated as he turned around with wet patches all along his chest and face dripping, you snickered slightly at the sight.
A few minutes later John B stopped the boat out in the marsh and JJ began taking his top off and then canon balled straight into the water. And a few seconds later you and Kie were the only ones left on the boat as the others playfully pushed each other around in water and swam.
The Carrera girl was still sunbathing while you sat finishing your beer with you legs dangling over the edge swishing through the water.
“Y/N?” Kie asked as she sat up.
You hummed in acknowledgment indicating for her to go on.
“Do you wanna have like a girls night tonight? I feel like we haven’t done that in ages.” You smiled at the thought and turned to Kie nodding.
“Yeah that’d be...nice.”
There was a reason you hadn’t had a girls night for a while. You simply could be just sitting there while Kie spoke about boys and you ignored your own feelings. Or having to lie about liking some rando from Kildare high school. The girls night was just you and Kie having quality girl time watching movies eating popcorn and sugery sweets and getting drunk in the confines of you or kies bedroom. And that’s why you couldn’t bare it. Being alone drunk with Kiara. What if you slipped up and told her and she hated you forever. Your friendship ruined and a relationship unattainable, like it already was.
“The waters so nice, are you guys not getting in? Also do you think I could come to girls night? I’d like to see some girl on girl action.” Both of you narrowed your eyes at the boy even though he was just joking about.
“That’s it.” You got up taking your top and shorts off and jumped in just beside where JJ floated in the water. And before he could even utter a word you were dunking him under the water. Until he wrapped his arms around your thighs and dragged you under with him but not before you caught the glimpse of Kiaras stare again looking towards you the same way you looked towards her all the time.
THE CARRERA RESIDENCE was the main place you felt at home. Your parents weren’t the nicest people. Being a pogue you lived in a small shack on the ‘bad’ side of town ever since you moved and they weren’t the most cheerful human beings due to this predicament. They were never horrible to you which you were lucky for. But they were never loving either. So it lead you to spending eighty percent of your time with the Carreras. You had been given a permanent invitation to dinner and an honorary job at the wreck after you lost your last one.
So when you laid on the soft rug on the floor of Kiara Carreras bedroom you wished you could just lay there for days but you knew your parents would be annoyed at you for bothering another family for that long, let alone kooks.
You’d just had dinner the Carrera family and had migrated back to her room. And you didn’t expect Kiara to burst back into the room in her bikini instead of with some movies and popcorn.
“So I was thinking we should go to the beach.” The corners of her pink lips quirked as she beamed towards you and how could you say no to that smile.
You nodded and then frowned realising your had ditched the bikini at home earlier and you were just wearing underwear.
Kie seemed to realise this as she began to search through her drawer picking out a perfect pastel pink bikini. But could you wear it. You’d seen the girl in that more than a million times and you definitely couldn’t pull it off the same way she could. Would you even fit into it?
But you pushed those thoughts to the back of your head and muttered a thank you before she left the room so you could change and then the both of you set out to the beach.
When you got there the waves were turning and churning and roaring in the midnight breeze just like your stomach was as Kiara grabbed you by the hand pulling you towards the sandy dark beach.
When she got down there she started stripping down to her bikini while you just stood there.
“You aren’t scared of the waves are you?” The girl asked in a teasing tone towards you as she walked further into the sea.
Luckily for the dark night covering up your blush as she got further away her laughs whisked away into the depths of the water. You felt trapped beneath your feelings again, unable to be the free spirit Kiara was but just seeing how happy she looked made you want to join her.
“Okay, I’m coming.” You rushed to get your clothes of stripping down to the bikini before making your way into the sea.
She didn’t respond, too caught up in the moonlight glaring down towards the water lighting up her face.
So you stealthily snuck up behind her clapping your hands down on her bare shoulders and yelling in her ear as she jumped and yelped in the water turning and glaring playfully towards you.
“Oh your gonna pay for that.” She smirked then chasing after you in the water as you attempted to swim away squealing. Kiara caught up to you catching you by your waist as you both laughed until it died down and you realised her soft hands were still on your waist and your eyes were caught in a trance as you stared towards her glowing face only one centimetre away from yours. You could feel her heavy breath on yours as she began leaning in slowly.
But you couldn’t handle the wait and went straight in smashing your wet lips to hers that tasted of sea salt and cherry chapstick and you closed your eyes in full euphoria. It felt as though she was the drug you had been craving your whole life and now you didn’t ever wanna lose this high. She kissed back softly her arms in your waist pulling you further in and you both pulled away a second later breathless and shocked. You stood in silence for a moment, the only sounds coming from the waves crashing and burning around you while you both stood intact together.
“Wow.” Kie uttered her mouth falling open as she looked wide eyed towards you while you felt butterflies in your stomach dancing around.
“That was unexpected.”
“Your telling me.” She said sighing contently. If she could she would stay in this moment for the rest of her life. Just the two of you. Finally.
“I didn’t think you...liked me, or girls.” You said confused. Why would Kiara like you? She could pick anyone. It still felt surreal and you pinched yourself to make sure it wasn’t a dream.
She frowned shaking her head. “I didn’t think you liked me.”
“Looks like we were both idiots in denial.”
“Hmm, maybe. But we’re not anymore—you wanna do that again?”
You nodded with a small smile. “I’ve wanted to do that since we were twelve and I’d happily do it one hundred times more.”
You both stood close, the tension now evident between you as she grinned towards you. “Glad we agree.”
Then she pulled you in this time and all you could think of was how much you loved your best friend. And how much you loved kissing your best friend. And how badly you had fallen for your best friend.
Note • The name and the description are really bad but I hope you liked this if you read it. I don’t even know where this idea came from it just popped up randomly and so I ran with it.
