Katakuri didn't know what to do. He'd come home after a long day to find you, his sweet, if not reluctant, new bride, naked as far as he could tell, covered in donut glaze, with frosting and sprinkles in strategic places.

He had future sight. He did. But it - everything - was failing his scrambling brain right now. He'd been giving you space since the wedding because he knew it hadn't been what you'd really wanted. Political marriages, even among pirates and their ilk, weren't any easy than those of the nobles.

He'd expected it was going to be at least another couple months before things warmed between the two of you.

"I know that... you like donuts." You say, trying not to sound as unsure as you're starting to feel. "And sweet.... sweet things. I thought, that maybe this would help soothe being forced to marry me."

Years of control is the only thing stopping Katakuri from making the most undignified sound of confusion. Forced to marry you? He'd been glad for it, honestly, but hadn't been sure it was his place to say so.

"I made actual donuts, I can get those-!" You stop as Katakuri kneels down in front of you. You're shorter, being just shy of 11', but not so small as to be incompatible.

He runs a finger across your collarbone, letting the glaze coat it, before bringing it to his lips. His eyes are on you and you can't look away from him.

"It's sweet." He says approvingly, handing keeping you steady as he moves closer to you. "But, I think you're sweeter." He admits, and you can hear the slight shiver in his voice. The concern, the uncertainty, and the desire.

"There's... only one way to be sure."

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

i think perhaps the most annoying/exhausting phenomenon in existence is when something kind of genuinely sucks but it has, like, a female lead or whatever so half the people that are saying it sucks are nightmare people that unironically call things "woke garbage" and the other half are people that just like. have a basic sense of story structure and knowledge of character arcs as a concept that quite reasonable think this thing sucks. BUT it gets assumed that 100% of people who think it sucks are in that first half and then there's a backlash TO the backlash and all along it's still not a good fucking story. I call this "The twilight phenomena" because it got a lot of hate because of a mockery of teenage girls when it had well deserved hate for the like racism and misogyny and the throwaway detail that a grown ass man is somehow romantic soulmates with a quite literal baby.

Was reading Twincognito on AO3 when I stumbled across this gem again:

Now I really want to read a story where Bruce adopts Danny post Meta trafficking and is being his usual emotionally constipated self. His kids keep getting mad at him because he's treating their new meta brother who was trafficked poorly (generally being stilted in conversation with him, walking away hurriedly mid-conversation, avoiding Danny when he's feeling really awkward, etc). They think Bruce is discriminating against Danny for being a civilian, meta, dealer's pick, but really it's just Bruce being horribly socially awkward. Danny knows this because of ghost empathy and find the whole thing hilarious. The whole thing comes to a head with the Bat Kids staging an intervention in the Bat Cave.

I love how on Tumblr, "media literacy" has become "Um, just because someone writes about this doesn't mean they're endorsing this. I hate all these media puritans ruining everything."

I'm sad to inform you that knowing when and whether an author is endorsing something, implying something, saying something, is also part of media literacy. Knowing when they are doing this and when they're not is part of media literacy. Assuming that no author has ever endorsed a bad thing is how you fall for proper gander. It's not media literacy to always assume that nobody ever has agreed with the morally reprehensible ideas in their work.

Sometimes, authors are endorsing something, and you need to be aware when that happens, and you also need to be aware when you're doing it as an author. All media isn't horny dubcon fanfic where you and the author know it's problematic IRL but you get off to it in the privacy of your brain. Sometimes very smart people can convince you of something that'll hurt others in the real world. Sometimes very dumb people will romanticize something without realizing they're doing it and you'll be caught up in it without realizing that you are.

Being aware of this is also media literacy. Being aware of the narrative tools used to affect your thinking is media literacy. Deciding on your own whether you agree with an author or not is media literacy. Enjoying characters doing bad things and allowing authors to create flawed or cruel characters for the sake of a story is perfectly fine, but it is not the same as being media literate. Being smug about how you never think an author has bad intentions tells me you're edgy, not that you're media literate. You can't use one rule to apply to all media. That's not how media literacy works. Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Aheem heem. Anyway.
