jayden grew up on a farm in henford-on-bagley with their grandparents. she always loved chickens and llamas but always had this longing for something longer; her music. towards the end of her teen years, they decided to move from henford-on-bagley to del sol valley and work on their career. their favorite genre of music is alternative, and so that’s what she writes. their career recently has started to take off with one of her newest songs, so she was actually invited to do the bachelorette challenge to help boost her career. although that’s why they were invited, they really just want to find love or just someone to write about.

Top 5 Reasons Doug’s Pretty Great

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nine years since the first episode of S1 was released. I can still remember be a wee little lass first discovering it on youtube and becoming obsessed. At the time, I had no where to play it myself, so I watched as many playthroughs as I could until my family got an xbox. 

While the first episode in this series has a lot of memorable moments, the one that always stands out in people’s memories is the moment where you’re trying to escape the drugstore as walkers pound away at the door and windows, and you realize that both Carley and Doug need your help or they’re going to die. 

But... you can only save one, and whoever you don’t help, they end up being eaten alive by walkers and you get to feel bad about it for the rest of the episode. 

I bring this up because it’s interesting to look back nine years ago and see that... well, not a lot of people saved Doug. Which is crazy, because now the stats are pretty 50/50 with Doug even having a bit of an edge over Carley. That definitely wasn’t the case back then because the stats were more along the line of 20/80.

Why? Well, the writer’s didn’t exactly do the best job of showing how great Doug is in ep1, especially compared to Carley who has more interactions with Lee and more screen time.... which is even funnier because they did actually think they did a good job and were surprised by the results after the episode’s release.

Even back then they had a habit of making imbalanced routes then denying the imbalance... something they never grew out of. 

I guess they were a little butthurt about it since Doug is a favorite among the team given that he’s actually based on a real person, Doug Tabacco, an IT guy they worked with. This got to the point where Telltale never missed an opportunity to tell everyone to #SaveDoug over Carley.

I also love that they use the Stranger to guilt trip everyone who saved Carley by having him be like, “Doug was in a worse position! >:( You only saved Carley because she was a pretty girl!!” just.... real subtle, guys haha

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that more often than not, I choose to save Carley over Doug for many reasons, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate Doug and enjoy having him around in the off chance I do save him. So I thought it’d be fun to talk about Doug as a character and why he was pretty great as a little tribute, y’know? 

5. Doug’s a pretty funny dude

Now, I wouldn’t exactly call twdg a comedy, y’know? It gets dark, then manages to get even darker at times, but if the game was nothing but doom and gloom, it’d get boring and become unenjoyable. 

While other characters do get a laugh out of me from time to time, I enjoy the humor that Doug brings to the group, even if it’s not intentional and just the way he is. 

Even from the beginning, Doug had me chuckling with the fact that this nerdy dude didn’t want to bring profanity to Lee’s ears when talking about Larry, so he’s just like “ He's kind of a dick... pardon my french,” like Doug.... it’s okay, you can call him an asshole, no one will judge hahaha.

Then there’s the biscuit scene that I think we all know and love. Helps break the tension of meeting these weirdo’s who own a dairy and are totally not suspicious or anything. 

But it’s not even just that Doug is funny, he’s also a character that gets you to crack a smile when he’s talking about something he’s passionate about, or when he’s proud of the alarm he rigged up, or when he’s being adorably awkward. 

One of my favorites is in ep3 when Lee goes to ask Doug if he has any chalk, and he goes into this spiel about charcoal-- “You know, a piece of charcoal is a suitable alternative, depending on your marking surface. Since we're on the subject, did you know that while chalk is traditionally known to be calcium carbonate, what's often used in classrooms is actually made of gypsum, thanks to favorable domestic mining conditions?”

And Lee’s response is just-- “Doug, I did not know that.”

“Happy to be of service.”

It’s just really funny... and it makes you feel better after all the implications about Doug’s mental health in the episode... like you gave him a moment to flex his knowledge and get excited about it. 

But yeah, what can I say? Doug makes me laugh and he brings a bit of light to the groups constant shitshow. 

4. Doug saved the group’s ass at the St John farm

And he did so with a laser pointer. 

I always hate it when Doug/Carley leave the group at the St Johns and remain absent for most of the episode, though I chalk that up to the writers trying to make the different routes easier on themselves, y’know? 

But, at least they come back to save the day. 

In Doug’s case, he’s not comfortable with guns like Carley is, so he’s gotta get creative when it comes to getting Lee’s attention and stopping Andy from hurting Duck and Lee. 

That’s where his fancy little laser pointer comes in. 

We first see him with it during the walk to the farm, but then see it in action after Lee escapes the barn and is nearly blinded by the light. Doug claims he was doing morse code before Lee tells him and Ben that these assholes cut off Mark’s legs and tried to feed them to the group. 

Now, here’s the thing... If Doug and Ben had done what they were told and stayed at the motor inn over night, things probably wouldn’t have turned out so good for the group. Doug is the one who shines the laser pointer in Andy’s eyes when he’s got ahold of Duck, giving Lee the advantage of attack. Without that, if Lee tried anything, he would’ve ended up like dingdong Kenny with a bullet in his side. 

Also there’s just a lot of bravery from Doug, y’know? Like as soon as he finds Lee and knows the situation, the first thing he asks is what can they do to help, and he sticks around to do what he can.... even if it is just to point a laser in someone’s eye. 

No one gives Doug enough credit for savin’ the day, y’know? And if you have any doubt, even Lee says, “I never thought a laser pointer would be the thing that saved our lives.”

3. Doug’s friendship with Lee

Speaking of Lee, his friendship with Doug is underrated. The two have chemistry and work off each other well in the scene’s they’re in. While it’s not as strong as Carley’s in ep1, saving Doug and having around in ep2 & ep3 lets you see it at it’s best, y’know? 

After Lee saves his life at the drugstore, Doug is shown to mourn Carley and asks Lee why he would pick him, lamenting that he wished he had picked her over him and you can tell that Doug feels that he owes Lee a lot for saving him. Hell, he even says as much when Lee tries to give him food in ep2-- “Why don't you keep my share today. I know I said it didn't matter why you saved me and not Carley, but... I owe you a lot more than half a day's rations."

Also, I love this one line from Kenny when you’re on bad terms with him and they’re talking about going separate ways where he’s basically like “We all know Doug’s gonna stay with you because you saved him that ONE time >:(” and on top of it being such a bitchy Kenny line, it also shows that every can see that Doug is a loyal friend to Lee and would want to stick with him where ever he decides to go. 

One thing that I think people tend to overlook, though, is how concerned Lee is with Doug’s mental health in ep3. There are implications that Doug might be suffering with depression due to the situation of the walkers, bandits harrassing and threatening them, and believing that he isn’t useful to the group, stating that he feel pretty worthless. Lee asks Clementine if he seems sad, and hell, he even talks to Lilly about it.

In fact, speaking of Clementine, Doug is real sweet with her, too. Of course, he gives her those batteries for her walkie, but he also asks about how she’s doing as they’re leaving the dairy. Hell, 8 years later, Clementine still remembers him by name and how sweet he was when fucking dingdong Lilly can’t remember his damn name. That says a lot. 

Y’all know how important Clementine is to Lee, so he wouldn’t have grown as close to Doug if he wasn’t a genuinely good person who treated Clementine with kindess. 

I dunno, there’s a lot of trust and care between the two and it’s a relationship that I truly love. I just wish we could’ve seen a bit more of it but y’know...#2 happened. 

2. Doug saved Ben’s life

Yeah, I think we all saw this coming...

Look, doesn’t matter what you think about Ben, okay? Not what we’re talkin’ about. We’re talkin’ about Doug saving Ben’s life, which unfortunately meant ending his own.

Still haven’t forgiven Lilly for this one. Though I’ve always found the difference between Doug and Carley’s death’s interesting. With Carley, Lilly intentionally kills her after Carley tells her off. But with Doug, Lilly was aiming for Ben and even when Doug pulled him out of the way, she still fired the gun... even though she didn’t have a clear shot and ended up hitting Doug. 

Then she tries to play it off like it was an accident which, yeah I guess it was but that doesn’t change that you were intending to murder this 6ft tall child. 

It’s just... I dunno, man, it’s sad. I always feel more sorrow for Doug’s death, but more anger for Carley’s? Even though both make me angry, it’s just different characters, different things that led to their deaths, different feelings. This is the first real “Fuck you, Lilly” moment for me and she can spend the next 8 years wandering around for all I can. 

Doug didn’t deserve this shit. 

But, the reason I put this at #2 because it really says a lot about Doug as a character. The second he saw Lilly aim that gun, he yanked Ben out of the way. He could’ve gone into shock, he could’ve just yelled “no!”, or he could’ve gone at Lilly instead.... but no, his first instinct was to grab Ben and move himself in front and it really fucking sucks that that’s what killed him. 

And y’know this isn’t the first time Doug has put himself in danger to save someone. I already talked about him saving everyone at the dairy, but can we not forget how he and Carley met? She was gonna get eaten by walkers then our big hero Doug came in and saved her?? Didn’t know her or anything, just saw her and her crew getting attacked and did what he could to save any survivors?? 

Like... no one talks about that because it’s so played off and never brought up again and I need everyone to remember this, okay? 

Doug selflessly putting himself in danger to help those around him? Fantastic. Beautiful. Love that.

1. Look, Doug himself is just #1. His personality, intelligence, everything.

Wow, Doug’s personality being the #1 reason he’s so great? Who woulda thought?

Well, ME woulda thought because obviously.

Listen... in case you haven’t gather this from the previous four entries, Doug is an intelligent, awkward, caring, selfless, funny, and brave man, okay? He’s likable, he tries his damnedest to pull his weight for the group, he shows actual loyalty and kindness unlike some people, and when he tends to avoid the constant Lilly and Kenny conflicts, he does his best to step in when things take a serious turn, hence the Ben situation. 

No to mention the dude is smart. 

I mean, he really took a random remote and was like, “Oh it’s universal, let me just program it to work on ALL the random TV’s across the street as a way to distract these walkers!” like dude.... you just know how to do that, huh? 

Or his fun little bell trap that alerts the groups of strangers and walkers? Oh, and remember when he fixed the RV by hitting it with a fucking hammer and was like “It works now, drive!” 

And have I mentioned that he bested Andy St John with a goddamn laser pointer?? 

Oh, also wanna add that I really like his voice acting, as well. He’s voiced by Sam Joan, who does a good job at selling Doug’s soft-spoken but intelligent nature, and knows how to pull off “dorky” when needed... and I mean that in a good way, when he’s talking about charcoal Doug is being a dork and I love him.

I mean... what else is there to say?

Walker 1.12

I’m gonna be honest this wasn’t as good as previous episodes but my biases do play a part in my opinion. Personally, for me the second half was way better than the first half. 

Things pick up right where we left off with Walker and Stella arriving at the ranch, but trouble was close behind because Clint and Trevor arrive right behind them and Clint has backup, and someone gets shot but we don’t find it who until the end. (spoiler alert: it was Liam)

After we hear the shot the episode throws us back 13 months to the past, to the day of Emily’s death. As the episode unravels we go jumping through the past until we arrive back in present day. So, this is pretty much a giant flashback episode with flashbacks within the flashback. 

In the first half we see stuff like: a little bit of what Emily was doing the morning of her death, we see the family arrive from the funeral, Walker gets an intervention cause he is such a mess that he passed out waiting to pick up his kids to the degree that his kids moved him from the driver seat, drove home and Stella set him up by driving into a post and making him think he had fallen asleep behind the wheel to give him a wake up call- I question the logistics of some of this but it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a pick up so maybe the new ones do have enough room for two teens to maneuver a passed out over 6ft tall man. Anyways, he gets an intervention and that pushed his decision to take the undercover job, he and we are also seeing Emily’s ghost left and right, we see a little bit of Liam and what his life was like before and after Emily’s death, learn a little more about the parents like the fact that Bonham was diagnosed with cancer.  

For me the first half of this episode is a miss for two reasons.

Now, I originally indented to keep this post neutral but this is a post with my opinions and this is a part of my opinion of this episode so reason number 1..... a certain “actress”.  I don’t even have to type out her name cause you and I both know who I’m talking about, it’s the one on the screen that’s getting out acted by the two teenagers. I would say I’m willing to help her pay for acting classes but she apparently already took them, I am once again suggesting she asks for her money back. In case it wasn’t clear, I hate her “acting” and there’s a lot of her in the first half of this episode and for me that’s a no. 

The second reason why the first half was a miss for me is because it’s badly written. It’s kind of sloppy in the way that it flows, and it’s got some moments that are just stupid. Like, there’s a scene where Stella and some other teens are hanging out at the Side Step (not what I would have considered a hot spot for teens it’s not like this is a small town but okay) and this kid is about to beat the high score on an arcade game that was there but Stella has a freak out about it because that would mean he would beat Emily’s high score which- first of all the show has done nothing to make this game important if they had shown us some scenes of Emily playing the game with her kids then it would resonate more for Stella to have such a strong reaction, but also Geri owned the bar. Geri, whose like an aunt to these kids, who was Emily’s best friend, if Stella didn’t want someone to beat her mom’s score she could have asked Geri to please remove the game or put a sign on it saying it was broken so people wouldn’t play it, or they could have added a scene where she asked for that and Geri been like ‘sorry kiddo no can do’. There’s so much more that could have been shown, it just feels like a wasted first half.

The second half however was an improvement because it actually showed and revealed to us things that we hadn’t seen before or known about like how Micki almost met Walker while he was undercover as Duke because she had given Crystal, Trevor’s mom, a ticket and was suspicious of her so she tracked her down to the house she, Clint and Duke were at and how that whole Crystal situation played a big role in her decision to become a Ranger. We also learn, Trevor really did have nothing to do with his parents illegal activities he didn’t even know about them until Clint got arrested and that Crystal actually didn’t even want to do that last robbery, they did it because Clint wanted to do it and Walker encouraged him. I didn’t expect to feel bad for Crystal yet here we are. 

Not only is the time utilized better in the second half but the story flows more smoothly and is all around better written. And more interesting. So, while the first half for me was a miss, I enjoyed the second half; and I love the song that played near the end, Night by Daniel Spaleniak. This show is so-so when it comes to soundtrack but this song was a great pick and well utilized. 

And then the episode ends when we’re back in present day and discover it was Liam who was shot. 

Overall, honestly not the best episode this show has put forward; there were a lot of missed opportunities, the writing wasn’t that good, the second half helped it a lot so it’s still a good ep but it kind feels like it’s taking up space.

Chapter Eighteen - The Way She Makes Me Feel

Bucky was trembling with rage. The catering company lead had been a bust. The security camera’s had picked up a hooded figure handing the book to the caterer but between the camera’s and the witness there were no identifying features other than it was a white male, early to late 30’s, 5’10 to 6ft tall.

“Docherty probably hired somebody to give the book to the caterer. Even if we found him, we’d probably just be chasing down a line of unaware people. He’s not going to make this easy for us.” Steve told him despondently.

Bucky sighed, he knew Steve was right but he had hoped he would have something a little more concrete to tell her. As they trudged back to the quinjet in defeat he allowed his mind to go where it had been desperate to go all day.

That kiss.

He hadn’t planned on it, he had only intended to assure her he wasn’t mad at her but it had just happened. He had looked down at her laughing face, eyes bright and shining with relief and amusement and he had realised that he desperately wanted to kiss her again. He knew it was a risk, she might push him away and hit him. She could have laughed in his face. But she didn’t, she kissed him back with fervour. She’d run her hands up his chest and felt his heart thundering under her palm, she’d pushed her hands into his hair and gently tugged at the strands when he nipped at her lip. She’d opened her mouth and let him entwine his tongue with hers. She had taken everything he offered and given it back with equal desire.

It had taken every ounce of self control he had to pull back and let her breathe. He wanted to keep her out there on the balcony, safely ensconced in his arms all night but had reluctantly escorted her back inside to her party. She had been snatched away from him almost straight away by Thor who had shoved a flask into her hands while Sam, Darcy and Steve had chanted at her to drink. He wanted to whisk her away and have her, all of her to himself but the more he watched her laugh and dance the more calm he felt. Seeing her joyous like that had made him happy.

For months he had told himself he hated her and it hadn’t been a lie but the more time he spent with her the more she got under his skin.

When the journalists had assailed her outside the tower and he had seen her shrink in on herself, terrified he had seen a softness in her he hadn’t known was there. And when she had come to him after, filled with rage and demanding he sparred with her it had lit a fire in his blood. She had beaten him, executing a flawless move that had taken his breath away in it’s efficiency and brutality.

When he had seen Vernichtung he had realised how wrong about her he was because one look at that monster was enough to make him see how different she was from the beast inside her. The pain she had felt at what that monster had done had broken his heart and when that bullet pierced her chest he felt like it had also pierced his.

That night in the kitchen when she had tenderly pressed the ice pack to his cheek his heart had fluttered in his chest and he’d felt hopeful that maybe she didn’t hate him. The calm and serenity of that moment had stayed with him all night and for the first time in a long time he had slept long and deep, unplagued by nightmares.

The moment she had agreed to go on a date with somebody else bile had risen in his throat and he had been bitterly reminded that he couldn’t have her. When he had seen her in her dress in the hallway it was like someone had dumped ice cold water over him such was the shock when he had realised then just how badly he actually wanted her. When she had ripped a man twice her size through the sunroof of a car and carved his tooth out with a knife he knew he shouldn’t have found it quite so attractive but the ferocity she had shown had ignited something carnal in him.

And the she had fought him, desperate to escape. Even shoving his own knife into his shoulder and his anger and lust had boiled over, mingling together and clouding his mind. He had kissed her before even considering what he was doing. For a few glorious moments she had kissed him back and then came the betrayal. He had wanted to hate her for it and for a few hours he had, until he saw the depths of depravity in the soul of the man she was trying to keep him away from. When he had seen her mother dying in that church it had hit him, the real monster wasn’t Vernichtung, it was Docherty. And she had known that from the beginning. She had drugged him, betrayed him and left him behind because she was protecting him.

She was brave to a fault, unwavering in the face of danger. She would do anything she had to do without flinching to protect the people around her. She was soft and sweet and ferocious and violent all at the same time. He had spent so long fuming at her getting under his skin that he hadn’t realised she had found her way into his heart.

“Earth to Bucky...” Steve called, waving a hand in front of his face.

Bucky was surprised to see they were already back at the quinjet.

“You ok Buck?” Steve asked him.

“Yeah pal, I’m fine.”

“You sure? I know you were hoping we’d catch a lead out here.”

“We’ll get him, he’s going to slip up eventually and then we’ll have him.” Bucky vowed.

“You’re pretty invested in this. I knew you’d do what you could to help, you’re a good man but you’re really going above and beyond the call of duty for someone you hate.”

“I don’t hate her.” Bucky said with a weary sigh.

He’d wasted so long thinking he did and he was done. She was still the most infuriating person he had ever met and she made his temper flare like nobody else but he did not hate her.

“That’s great Buck, I’m so relieved. Because I was thinking..”

“A dangerous pastime.”

“Shut up jerk. That date I took her on, it was nice. Really nice. I hadn’t really thought of her in that way before then but now I am. Do you think I should take her out again?”

Bucky’s head snapped up as he felt his heart sink to his stomach. He wanted her but this was Steve. His best friend and the best person he knew. How could he compete with Captain America, even if he could bring himself to try?

“Oh. You and her? You like her?” He asked through the lump in his throat.

“Yeah. She’s pretty amazing don’t you think?” Steve replied.

“Yeah, yeah she is.” Bucky said wistfully.

She really was amazing, the most amazing woman he’d met. And she deserved someone like Steve, the only person with a heart as big as hers. He was broken out of his musings by Steve’s sniggering.

“You’ve really got it bad for her don’t ya pal? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this doll dizzy.” Steve laughed.

“Me? I thought you said you wanted to ask her out?” Bucky was lost.

“Wanted to see if you’d finally figured out how you felt about her. Glad to see you’ve cottoned on at last.” Steve grinned.

“You knew?”

“You’ve been my best friend for decades. Of course I knew.” Steve said with a shrug.

“Is that why you went on a date with her?”

“No. I did that for her. The fact it made you jealous was just a bonus. Your face in the elevator when she called you out for being jealous though, that was priceless.”

“I can’t believe everybody thinks you’re some kind of paragon of virtue and justice. You’re a little shit.” Bucky snapped.

“Don’t get mad at me because you were blind to your own feelings. It’s been exhausting watching you two tear each other to shreds, waiting for the other shoe to drop.” Steve said in exasperation.

Bucky couldn’t even be mad. Steve was right, he had been a blind idiot.

“I kissed her.” Bucky admitted.

“How’d she respond?”

“Which time?”

“How many times have you kissed her?” Steve asked indignantly.

“See, you don’t know everything Rogers.” Bucky smirked.

“Bucky.” Steve whined petulantly.

“Twice. I kissed her twice. First time was after she stabbed me. She tranquillized me mid kiss.”

Steve looked scandalised.

“Don’t give me that look, I remember when Peggy shot at you.” Bucky pointed out.

Steve smiled wistfully at the memory.

“She makes me feel alive Stevie, even when she’s shouting at me. Especially when she’s shouting at me. Everything’s a little brighter, more intense when I’m around her. The whole world just seems like more than it was the day before you know? She’s there and suddenly my heart beats faster, my blood runs quicker and I just feel so alive.” Bucky told him, frustrated he couldn’t find the words to express it properly.

“You’re in love with her.” Steve said with wonder, clapping him on the shoulder.

“Yeah, I think I am. I really think I am.”

Gratitude is the best attitude!

Blog Entry #12

Hey blog back again for another one of my lovely posts. I have been doing my best everyday to maintain a clear mindset, positive attitude and sense of gratitude. Today I want the focus of my blog to be centered on “gratitude”. During this madness due to the Covid-19 outbreak I feel like everyone is losing sight of what they have and narrowing in on what they don’t.

So to begin with this example, most us say “thanks” and tip our pizza delivery apart driver (from a 6ft distance) and that is a common way how we think we offer gratitude.

Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness just consists of words. Gratitude is shown in acts. Gratitude is the best attitude!

I have learned through this time you can have gratitude for the simplest of things in life. Such as the sunrise, your favorite candy, warm blankets to even just going for walks On my daily walk with my family I learned to be thankful to find a dandelion growing in a crack on a sidewalk? You may be thinking, wow she’s really lost her mind during this quarantine! Sure I wouldn’t disagree but it helps me realize that little things are awesome, and a lot of little things can certainly add up to big things.

When you actively choose to show gratitude in appreciation of what you have and also for what you hope will happen, you’ll be setting up momentum that will lead to having a great minute, day, week, month, year… and life.

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude. During a time that seems to be lacking happiness I learned in order to have it I must spread it.

Happiness is earned and learned through gratitude. By being appreciative of everything we have, we become more likely to habitually carry ourselves with gratitude, which in turn increases our awareness of the fact that we have so much around us already that we should be thankful for. No doubt that gratitude is the best attitude.

Every little thing we do can be a lesson on how to be happy. Here are a few examples of how things that happen to us in our daily lives can be looked at through the lens of gratitude.

Happiness is earned and learned through gratitude. Well blog that is all I have today! I challenge you guys to find something that makes you express gratitude and to text someone you are grateful for. I am grateful I have been able to write to you guys about my daily life during this quarantine. Remember to always live your best life! (M.McGuire)

The girl who doesn't know she's beautiful

There's this girl that I know that doesn't seem to understand that she's beautiful. I'm not sure if she reads this blog anymore, but if she is, uhhhhhhh, enjoy? She constantly talks about being annoyed by guys, often talking in a joking matter that they won't stop bothering her and that some just show up out of nowhere sometimes to make her acquaintance. The way she talks to me about these situations, I am not even sure if she knows what exactly is happening, and the fact that she gets flirted with basically on a daily basis. She says that this happens because she is too nice and that she allows people to think that she isn't annoyed. Although this is possibly part of the reason this happens, I can't agree with it fully because I consider myself to be an honestly nice person most of the time, yet, you don't see me with whatever type of attention this is. Idk if its a lack of personal confidence or self-awareness, but I think that she doesn't realize that she's beautiful.

Anyways, the other day, this girl asked me one of the most confusing questions I believe I've ever been asked: "Why aren't you dating anyone?". At the time, I really couldn't answer the question fully honestly so I told the half-truth, saying that I've just given up on that shit, which I think flew by her head anyways so, yeah, good job Sam. Look, if you're new here (if so, wtf are you doing, but also, welcome) I've been solidly single for the past 3 years, and as I've expressed in other posts before this one, it's driving me fucking insane at this point. I'm happy don't get me wrong, but I could be happier, and a little less lonely. Back to the point, there are many reasons why I couldn't tell this girl I wasn't dating anyone. First of all, which I hope is clear by now, I would like to date her. She knows I like her, but at this point, who fucking knows if she likes me, that's pretty much anyone's guess. The whole situation around this whole thing is complicated, and although I wish I could explain it, I think it would be better to keep to myself. Let's just say that it's weird to be asked why I'm not dating someone when that person knows I'm interested in them; capiche?

This could be the end of the post, but alas, I have more to say on this question. The truth is that I really don't see myself as dateable anymore. Don't get me wrong, I've had a few encounters over the years of people interested in me, but I've not felt "the butterflies" everyone talks about in a really long time, and that honestly scares me. I know I'm not asexual, I actually find some people attractive and I am actively in search of a relationship, so that route is out of the equation. This thought process is one that I have a lot, and although it has been influenced recently by this girl, it still haunts me that maybe I'm just doomed to fail when it comes to this shit. For the first time in 3 years, I kid you not, I am actually taken aback and fully infatuated with this girl, and not being able to do anything about it is toying with my mind. I'm currently stuck in a rut where the only place I can talk about this struggle is by writing it here, because I don't feel like I can go into detail on my thought processes about relationships with any of my friends, my family, or this girl obviously. Let me explain why this whole ordeal is hard.

As I mentioned, I don't think I'm very dateable. The first side to this is online dating, which I've had little to no success in. Why? Well for the very simple fact that first impressions are more important than ever in online communication, and when you look like I do, uhhhhh, you don't get to speak your mind as often as fucking alpha bro jacked dude don't you. Look, I don't think I am such a horrible looking dude, but I'm the nearest anyone will ever get to average. You might say, well Sam, you're 6ft girls love tall guys! I would thus retort, how many girls in the bios write, looking for a tall guy, but also make sure he's lanky as fuck and drifts in the wind. I workout (a lot now) but none of it is to make me look fucking jacked, because even if I was bigger or whatever, that wouldn't really change the fact that I'm definitely not instantly "likable". I've thus had to confine myself to apps like Hinge which seem to host people who are less likely to want night one bone zones, but that in consequence are not very populated. What's worse, I fucking suck at texting and cannot at all translate who I am or the personality that I can exude in person by messaging. I sound so fucking boring, like a retired interviewer, and basically, I just don't have it at all when it comes to communicating to new people who I am or allowing myself to open up quickly. Online dating has been really shitty for me, and thus it's one of the reasons I haven't been dateable.

In general, I'd say I'm more self-confident than ever, doing well in school and actually being fit for the first time in a while. But when it comes to translating that into confidence that can be shown to others, I really don't think I have what it takes. I mean even for people I would want to be friends with or such, I cannot approach strangers at all because I end up completely messing up the sentence I had prepared in advance, cracking my voice every 3 and a half seconds. So, we're doing super hot here, online and in real life, I'm a complete fuck up. This ties well to the notion that I believe I had written about before in that I don't really make new friends because I feel like being my genuine self took already so long to expose with those that I know now that I'm not even sure how to repeat it. I think often, I come off as an asshole to people with my over-confident sarcastic humor and my want to seem like I know what I'm talking about all the time. I also believe that I'm not a very approachable person since I don't generally smile for no reason and tend to always have a serious expression, probably explaining why every row I sit in class is empty. I think people are put off by my want to be a leader and to excel in everything I do, when for others, they would rather interact with those that don't put themselves through anxiety to perform to a level that they know is unrealistic. I believe I am undatable because I am essentially unreachable, or that I have negative behavior that contributes to me not being approached.

Look I'm not sure where I am going with this but yeah, I am quite confused. I don't know what to do about this girl, to allow myself to be friend-zoned for the 100th time in my life, or to give up entirely and try to get my mind off it. That second option is the one I've heard the most from my friends and sometimes my family, and yet, for all the bad, every time I see this girl, I forget all about it. I forget about the times I've been stood up and the countless hints, advice and tips I've given for who knows what in return. I don't know what to do, and you know the irony of it all; I finished writing this whole text right next to her.

*Quick update* Got friend-zoned literally by the end of the day. I guess it's settled.

*Update #2* She says she had feelings for me, yet is deciding that she doesn’t want a relationship with me. Good guys don’t win and you can quote me on that :).

Why is There So Much Sympathy for the King and Not the Prince?

[Includes spoilers through end of Ep 8]

At first I saw a few random comments under some YouTube clips from viewers who said they secretly wanted to see the King end up with Chae Kyung and not the Prince. There was a general apology that went something like, “I’m sorry...I can’t help it.” 

But pretty soon this grew into a fairly large wave of general feeling of people having more sympathy for the King than Yeok. This really had me perplexed for awhile because I see the King as emotionally unstable, insecure, drunk with power, a tyrant over his people and fairly crazy while Yeok is the rational one of stable character, intense inner strength and a romantic heart. Oh, did I mention that Yung tried to have Yeok killed? How could anyone have sympathy for Yung?

What the heck is going on? Why do so many viewers not see what I see?

Wae? Wae?! WAE??!

Well, I figured it out.

It’s simple really. Indeed we have seen Yung as being so intensely jealous of his father’s love and preference for his younger brother. So jealous that it drives him to madness, strange behavior, and he even tries to have his brother killed. But we have also seen a lot of Yung’s viewpoint of his relationships with his family up until this point. We’ve seen him adore and love his brother as a child, we’ve seen the pain he had to endure at the loss of his mother and not being able to honor her death, a pain that he is reminded of daily simply by the presence of Yeok’s mother as the Queen Dowager. When the Queen Dowager begs Yung not to kill Yeok, Yung realizes how she truly feels about him. He feels betrayed and his love for her has been for nothing.

We are also shown Yung’s softer side with Chae Kyung. He is kind, playful and loving with her. He takes care of her in times of need and she has been there for him as well. She made a special ceremony for him to honor and pray for his mother. We see a lot of Yung’s pain and his kind side that no one else but Chae Kyung sees. 

No wonder so many feel sympathy for him. We are shown so many events of his past and so many sides of him. We can relate to him.

But what about Yeok? Remember when he first came on the scene as an adult? Heroic, strong, brave, dashing, determined!  Didn’t we expect him to continue in that role? But he didn’t, did he?

Instead we soon find him chilling at the pawn shop, thinking and planning but not acting terribly heroic. He isn’t really doing much of anything but hiding out.

Worse yet, how do we see him with Chae Kyung? Rude and unkind, for the most part. He first encounters her accidentally and is shaken to hear his older brother refer to her as his “wife.” In that moment, for him, all bets are off. All the pain he endured to come back to Chae Kyung was for nothing in his mind because she did not keep her promise. She betrayed him with his own brother! This is what he is thinking. He has no reason to think otherwise. He’s bitter and jealous and can’t seem to let it go. Each time he sees Chae Kyung, he’s flat out rotten to her.

And yet, when danger looms, Yeok always takes her hand and makes an effort to protect her. But the moment they are alone, despite her kindness to him, he can’t help but attack her with harsh words. It’s not until she’s arrested and in true danger for her life, that he he shows how desperately he loves her. But rather than have an immediate plan like most heroes we’ve seen, he’s impulsive, unwise, unsuccessful. What kind of hero is this?

So far he is pretty hard to like. Well, not for me. But I can see why people don’t have a lot of sympathy for him. He’s been a real jerk for the most part.

But nevertheless, deep down inside, a hero Yeok is indeed. Not all heroes are meant to charge in, battle the baddies and save the maiden all in one shot. Yeok is a thinking hero. Once he settles down and accepts his true nature, he hatches a plan to save his beloved that works like a charm.

For drama viewers, though, it’s going to take some time just to warm back up to him. 

Yeok is not the hero we expected or are used to in a drama. In the story so far they have shown very little of his pain or his kind nature like they have with the King. This is the simple reason why viewers are finding it hard to have sympathy for Yeok.

* BUT! *   I sense we are on the verge of having our hearts touched by Yeok again. Why?

In Eps 8 we started to see a change. Not only did we see Yeok live up to his heroic potential, we saw him being sweet and kind to Chae Kyung for the first time since childhood. We saw him choking back his tears at her bedside. His sacrifice of giving back her ring even though it broke his heart. Why did he do that? So she would no longer feel committed to him. He was releasing her from any obligation to him. We saw him being utterly selfless in that moment. We also saw him restraining his feelings and jealousy in letting Yung be the visible hero and carry her off from her suffering on the cross. 

We always knew he loved her, despite his rudeness. But now we actually see him expressing it.

This is the side of Yeok we’ve been wanting to see. And I think it’s going to grow from here on. I think the more we see him showing his love for her, the more people will be on his side. I hope, in turn, we are allowed to see more of his struggle as well, his suffering and how the thought of Chae Kyung was the only thing that gave him the will to live in those difficult years. If we see more of this, we will be able to feel empathy for him. I already do. I see all this in him without having to “see” it on the screen. But most people really need to see these things with their eyes in order to feel for a character.

Yeok’s heroic grand entrance at the end of Ep 8 was the very thing we’d been longing for!  I truly did not see it coming, which made it all the more exciting. A loud, strong voice, the thunder of drums, and shazam!  He is here! He walks right up to his brother and confidently announces who he was. No more hiding, no more secrecy. Even the King is taken aback at this brashness.

At long last arrives our hero! 

All 6ft of him. 100% badass.

Predictions . . .

I believe it is only the beginning. It feels like a pivoting point for the story. I think we will now see more of an unfolding of Lee Yeok. I truly believe that we will see happy, playful, loving times between Yeok and Chae Kyung. They may be short lived, but I believe we will finally get to enjoy their love.

I think we will see an arc of Yeok’s character change and when we do, viewers will come back around to his side. I feel this from the writing and directing style. I sense a gradual path that this story is progressing along. I also feel this in my gut as a fan and follower of Yeon Woo Jin. One thing I’ve noticed in the roles that he’s played, he always chooses a character who is misunderstood early on and later revealed to be exactly who you hoped he’d be and, in fact, always was. I have faith that it will be that same in this case.

Twin Peaks Part 14 Coffee Time

Well here we are we are now 4 hours away from twin Peaks finishing “the return” story, the pile driver punches just keep coming.

So the episode kicks off with Cole calling the sheriffs department in Twin Peaks he is returning Frank Truman’s call, Truman is providing Cole information on the missing page of Laura’s diary. There a wonderful little scene between Lucy and Cole. I can only imagine was Lucy and Andy’s trip to Bora Bora would of been like.

We stay with Cole and the team for an explanation of the first Blue Rose case

Olympia, Washington, 1975

2 field agents investigate a murder in Olympia, Washington. (Cole and Jefferies)

They arrest Lois Duffy at a motel.  They kick the door in after hearing a gunshot, there are 2 women inside. One on the floor dying the other holding the gun then drops it whe  the agents entewr

The wounded women is Lois Duffy on the floor she speaks

“i’m like the blue rose” and then smiles then dies and disappears

The other woman is also Lois Duffy she doesnt have a Twin sister Albert comments. 

While awaiting trail Lois Duffy swears she didn’t commit she hangs herself.

Tammy is asked what question should she ask she returns with 

“whats the significance of the blue rose”

“blue rose does not occur in nature its not a natural thing, the dying woman was not natural, conjured,  whats the word a tulpa”

This scene plays out very much like X files, so its probably why I liked it so much, The tulpa has also appeared in X file law in season 6′s Arcadia (the one where Mulder and Scully play house) and in season 10′s home again (the band aid man)

Diane is on her way but before that we get the window cleaner, Moving on quickly...

Then we get the bombshell, On the last night that Diane saw Cooper did he mention Briggs Cole asks, she doesn’t want to talk a bout that night, but Cole pushes her. She confirms that he did, Albert then spells out what has happened to Briggs and the ring that was found

The next part I was shouting at the screen over and over again in Doctor who fashion.

Diane’s half sister is Janey-E and is married to Douglas Jones everyone calls him Dougie. Shes estranged but last heard they were in Las Vegas.

So my initial thought straight away hit me, Cole Albert and Tammy have now asked about Vegas, Diane got that text basically asking as much, We don’t know which side of the fence she is sitting on but she did seem genuinely shocked when they asked about Janey-E could it be that things are starting to make sense to her now the pieces are falling in line?

Cole calls the Vegas office there are 23 Douglas Jones in the area, (why did they not mention Janey-E is anyones guess surely that would of narrowed the search a bit.)

“How are we going to find the right one”

“WILSON HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU THIS IS WHAT WE DO IN THE FBI” 

Brilliantly funny my x file fandom also struck a chord albeit in a slightly different way.

““Thats why they put the I in the fbi” Xfiles pilot.

So were no more than 15 minutes in wow, so much stuff to mull over already,

After Diane leaves we get Cole bringing everyone up to date with the missing pages of Laura’s dairy, with the revelation of 2 coopers but after Cole’s first case I can see now why this may be more low key than I imagined it to be, A footnote in another Blue rose case. There are 2 coopers we now know what we are dealing with, but suspicions were probably already there this acts more of a confirmation to them, 

Monica Bellucci dream, “Oh boy” Albert sighs and Tammy... well her look say’s it all.

So the dream:

Paris Cafe, the music is deliberately tense and suspenseful. Cooper was there but no face could be seen only his chin, 

Monica was pleasant and had brought friends. While having a Coffee Monica quotes the phrase 

“We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream, .... but who is the dreamer”

Monica looked beyond Cole while he was feeling VERY uneasy. As he looks back we see scenes from Fire walk with me.

Cooper says it 10:10 February 16th. Cooper was worried about the day because of his dream, Jefferies appears and points at Cooper asking 

“who do you think that is there”

Cole and Albert both hadn’t remembered that. Its seems to be a running theme I am picking up on at the moment. more on that later.

I don’t want to theorise too much but dreams are a kin to the lodges, are we seeing a guiding force to the final act or a we seeing some very timey wimey stuff going on.

So back in Twin peaks the boys are getting ready to go into the woods, sandwiches are laid on the table and Andy is having just cheese, Reinforcing the fact that he is a simple standard guy very plain non corrupted. well thats the way I see it especially with what happens shortly, 

They arrest Chad and I can pretty much imagine the whole fandom punching the air, screaming yes. I did. I can only assume that because they all were leaving for the mountain that they wanted him out the way now.

Up in the mountain I had a very uneasy feeling, we had the hum but we also had Andy at the back and a bit behind them in a couple of scenes while they are walking, it gave us milliseconds extra screen time but it did feel like something was about to happen. 

The listening post is gone Bobby remembers lots of machines and then we arrive Bobby laughing on seeing Jack rabbits palace. One thing to note here 

The pan up the trunk is VERY reminiscent of the purple place before we see the Giant/Fireman and the birth of the golden Laura Orb.

253 yard due east with soil in their pockets we find Naido, Andy comforts her a vortex appears and he ends up sitting across from what we now know is the fireman. Andy is basically shown the entire history of the twin peaks story the explosion, Convenience store, GOTTA LIGHT, Laura’s death, Coopers ganger and even some future events (Lucy being shown something by Andy it would be funny if this was only a self fulfilling prophecy and there is nothing to the scene whatsoever ) Also included is the post where the kid got killed and the number 6 I have a feeling this post has been in the show before i’m guessing fire walk with me but not sure.

I feel that Andy must of been picked as he like cooper is not corruptible he is pure, plain like the sandwich no additions just who he is.

We return to planet earth, Andy is as confident as we have EVER seen him, he now has a purpose and he will do everything he can to complete his destiny. Naido must be protected and no one must know where she is. 

Truman and Hawk are struggling to remember what happened, its a running theme throughout then whole show with Cooper, Cole, Diane, People in the bar, anyone who may of been close too or in contact with the otherworldly beings or supernatural vortex's etc, 

We get an Andy and Lucy scene in the cells, a dog got lost and Lucy must have stayed the night Andy remembers that night too, Please don’t tell me Wally was conceived there Ha Ha.

Chad gets a lecture from Andy and we get a really bizarre guy mimicking everything, With blood or some other substance coming from his mouth, its a genuine WTF moment. I need to know more. 

We find ourselves at the Great northern with Freddie cracking nuts with his distinctive green glove and finding out its James birthday.

It appears James is after another married woman (sighs), Renee, could that be the girl who was at the bar when he was singing. Also I have had the thought that is this scene prior to our first bar scene, James doesn’t know who is on. Surely you would know if Lissie was on? No?

We then get the green glove Iron fist story, Where did he start bleeding? it must of been terrifying to the doctor  We also hear a lot of what the fireman had said, he has never spoken so much (off screen obviously), Freddie says London Town, when was it last called London Town the Victorian ages?? The fireman tells him that he will possess:

“the power of an enormous pile driver” we get the Jobsworth story and the cockney slang (i’m not a fan) of snapping his Gregory, (Gregory Peck=Neck), There is also a red card metaphor just in case you didn’t realise he is English, The fireman tells him to go to Twin Peaks to for fill his destiny.

James heads down to the furness’s we get the same noise down hear from up above in Ben's offices and a door, The whole scene seems to call back to Bob we see him in an area very much like this one i think in Fire walk with me if memory serves me right.

SOOOOO we come to Sarah Palmer, I can only guess it leads on from her boxing scene, no more drink needs one goes to bar. 

An obnoxious guy tries to hit on her, which turns out to be a HUGGE mistake, once Sarah takes off her face we get spikes clawing out of her face a hand which has a blackened spirit finger (as discussed on the plane by Cole to Tammy) and then a smile worthy of the cat from Alice in Wonderland, once the face is back on we get a devastating chomp on his neck. Is Sarah aware is she possessed or is she in complete control, does she have that creature in her from episode 8, is it as i have been educated recently Babylon from the box has it taken her over, Is it even Sarah soo many questions its left deliberately ambiguous. Her final remarks, “sure is a mystery huh” is just chilling.

So we are back at the bar another 2 random people talking about getting high, (Twin peaks seems to have a really big drug problem), Then we come to Billy, This girl is supposedly the last one to see him, she goes on to tell the story in the kitchen she thinks her uncle was there she is not sure, Billy jumped over a 6ft fence got into the kitchen blood coming from nose and mouth, he’s looking really strange, they don’t tell anyone? (did they remember it at the time my guess is it just left there mind as these things keep happening.) and we also find out that he has been having a relatioship with her mom TINA, The moment we get her name ominous music comes over.  The girl looks down and then asks “and then he just ran out again” its almost as if the previous question didn’t happen like she forgot, its all links in thematically. She also now doesn’t know if her uncle was there, where as before she thought he was. 

There are Probing questions here “have you seen Billy”

“ive heard you were the last person to see Billy”

“Whats your moms name” 

All these questions feel deliberate the others are lighter in tone. 

To me this probably was the most intriguing part of the whole episode. what an episiode it was.

Who is Billy? Is he having multiple affairs, Audrey, Tina etc, Who’s the dreamer, Is it Cooper, Is it Audrey in a COMA, Whats that thing in the CELL near Naido and Chad? Who’s after Naido is it the experiment? Whats happening with Sarah? Is she polar opposite to Laura now? Is the fireman creating a force to protect the white lodge? There is a plan in place it seems.

We have a lot to get through in 4 hours, and its going to be glorious.

A mother who has been fighting for 42 years to find out what happened to her dead baby’s remains has discovered his coffin was buried with no body in it.

Lydia Reid was granted a court order for an exhumation to be carried out at the burial plot in Edinburgh last week but no human remains were found.

The exhumation was conducted by respected forensic anthropologist Prof Dame Sue Black.

Her report concluded that the coffin was buried without human remains.

Ms Reid said the news was “devastating”.

During the exhumation, Prof Black found a shawl, a hat, a cross and a name tag in the burial plot at Saughton Cemetery in Edinburgh, as well as the disintegrated coffin.

The internationally-renowned forensic scientist said there were no skeletal remains and no sign of decomposition.

She told BBC Scotland: “Ultimately there is only one possible logical explanation and that is that the body was not put in that coffin.”

Ms Reid’s son Gary died at seven days old at Edinburgh’s Sick Kids hospital in July 1975.

Ms Reid, now 68, said that when she asked to see her son she was shown a child that was not hers.

“I objected but they said I was suffering from post-natal depression,” she said.

“This baby was blonde and big, my baby was tiny and dark-haired. This was not my son.”

Ms Reid has campaigned for years to find out what happened to her son.

She was a leading figure in the Scottish push to expose how hospitals had unlawfully retained dead children’s body parts for research.

The NHS in Scotland was forced to admit the widespread practice after an investigation into organ retention at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool.

About 6,000 organs and tissues were retained by Scottish hospitals between 1970 and 2000, many from children.

Ms Reid continued to suspect her son’s organs had been taken without permission but she has never found proof.

She said a post-mortem examination was carried out after his death against her wishes.

After getting Prof Black to agree to carry out DNA testing on the remains, Ms Reid was granted a court order for an exhumation to confirm the contents of the coffin.

Prof Black, the director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee, said: “Lydia believed the baby in the grave may not be hers. The aim was to find bone for DNA analysis.”

She said they found the coffin about 6ft down and the nameplate allowed them to identify that they were in the right place, even if Gary’s name was spelt wrongly.

“When we first went down into the grave site there was a lot of funeral clothing so our expectation was that we had found what we were looking for,” she said.

However, when they took the contents back to the lab to examine them there was no trace of human remains.

There was a woollen shawl, a hat and a cotton shroud as well as fragments of the coffin.

“So we had wool, cotton and even a little cross, all preserved incredibly well – but there were no human remains,” Prof Black said.

“There was no baby in the coffin.”

“There is no other answer because you never get that level of preservation of coffin and not have a body be preserved.

“There is no hair inside the hat, there is no bone inside the coffin shroud. It was not there and I have never seen that before.”

Someone must know

Ms Reid said: “I wanted to prove the fact that he wasn’t there. Until I could prove that he wasn’t there I could not fight to find him.”

“I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to be called a stupid old woman but the minute Sue lifted the shawl out of the ground I knew there was nothing in it.

“My heart hit my feet and I did not know what to say.

“It is devastating to know that all years I have been coming here to honour my son and he’s not been here.

“He is my son and he deserves the respect of a proper burial.”

She said someone must know what happened to him.

“Even if he has been incinerated I want to know,” she said.

“Even if he is lying in a jar in a hospital somewhere I want to know. If it is possible to get my son back, I want my son back.

“If it is not possible then at least tell me and let me have peace.”

Ms Reid said she knew for her time in the organ scandal campaign that there would be other cases like hers.

Prof Black said: “If I was a betting woman I would say this is not an isolated incident and the reason is that it seems to incredibly well executed.”

She said: “There will have to be an investigation of some sort.”

“I’ve never come across anything like this before.”

Contacted the police

Funeral directors Scotmid Co-operative Funerals said as soon as they heard of the allegations they informed Police Scotland.

A statement said: “We also recently met with Mrs Reid and close members of her family to offer our full support in what has been an extremely distressing situation for them.

“We hope that our actions in contacting the police will help give Mrs Reid the answers to the questions she has raised about her son’s funeral.”

NHS Lothian deputy chief executive Jim Crombie said: “Our condolences are with the family of Gary Paton. This matter is now being looked into by the police and we are unable to comment further.”

Task 1.3

For this task we have been asked to critically compare a range of communication methods used to convey meaning in creative media production. I have decided to compare ‘Buried’ directed by Rodrigo Cortés and ‘The Proposal’ directed by Anne Fletcher. ‘Buried’ is a Thriller film where the entire trailer is set in one location, that location being in a coffin 6ft underground. This is, as the film title suggests, that the main character, played by Ryan Reynolds, is buried. Unlike the majority of film trailers, this one only showed one character throughout, suggesting he is the only character in the film. Due to the location, it is very dark and eerie creating a feeling of fear and suspense. The minimal use of light shows the limited resources he has available while also bringing in a sense of claustrophobia and loneliness. The only communication between characters during the trailer and possibly the rest of the film is via the mobile phone which is shown to be low on battery at the end of the trailer. Like most thriller films it showed lots of flickering light due to the use of the lighter, creating a feeling of tension. This feeling is also created by the repetitive facial close ups, common in thriller films to show the characters fear and other emotions. Due to his unfortunate situation of being buried 6ft underground, costume does not play a big part in this film as it appears that he will only ever be seen in the box. The beginning of the trailer opens to increasingly suspenseful music as he discovers his whereabouts, however as it continues he uses his limited oxygen to phone for help as the dramatic music accompanies him throughout. I believe that the message they are trying to show through the trailer is that the film is about the fight for survival as he faces a life threatening situation. From the trailer i feel as though the film is targeted towards teens and adults of both genders.

‘The Proposal’ is a Romantic comedy film about a woman, played by Sandra Bullock, who is dedicated to her career when she finds out that her visa has been denied and she is being deported back to Canada. In order to keep her job she lies, announcing that she is secretly engaged to be married to her assistant, played by Ryan Reynolds, despite the fact he despises her. One thing leads to another and she finds herself going to Alaska to meet his family, where they then decide to host the wedding before their visit ends. The use of cheerful and upbeat music as well as burst of colour and attractive scenery makes you feel like this film is fun and uplifting, leaving you happier. Throughout the film you see the ‘grin and bear it’ attitude that Ryan Reynolds’ character displays as he plays along with his boss’ plan to marry, therefore preventing her deportation. This is in the hope that he will keep his job and further his career. I believe that the message they are trying to show through the trailer is that the film is like most cliche love stories, showing that love can often be found where you least expect it. From the trailer i feel as though the film is targeted towards females of all ages, like most traditional chick-flicks. It does however, contain the occasional adult humour and scenes of partial nudity making it less suitable for children. The humour and appeal of Ryan Reynolds as well as Betty White would also attract men of all ages towards this film. Both film trailers make good use of music to convey feelings and emotion to the audience. Unlike ‘Buried’ which only shows one location and one character in the trailer, ‘The Proposal’ is shown to be in multiple locations with many characters throughout. One of the main differences between the two trailers is that ‘The Proposal’ allows us to see a brief glimpse into the backstory of the characters and their relationship whereas ‘Buried’ is a very ‘here and now’ snapshot into the characters situation as we don’t get to see how or why he has ended up there or even where he is buried. In conclusion both these trailers succeeded in clearly presenting the genres of the films as well as the target audience and their appealing features which encourage us to watch them.
