3. A character that fandom has helped you appreciate

Nagi from Ninninger. An absolutely vital part of the team and so important to the development of the team as a new unit that's branching off from the expectations that were placed on them by the previous generations. Ninninger talks about development and growth past traditional and societal expectations in a really interesting way. It often uses ninpo/nintality to expand upon the idea of branching off of what you know in creating a new type of ninja/expanding upon individual strengths that can be vital within a unit. I think that the first time around I didn't appreciate him enough but after seeing more on what others who like Nagi's character and development, I felt like I was able to put more into analyzing his character and understanding how important he is to the team.

From my rewatch of episode 35:

#i actually do think that nagi has some of the most interesting dynamics as he is the youngest and feels he has to do more to keep up with#the others and i think he's quite unique in how he approaches his dilemmas as he's very much a people person and reads people well#it's part of why he's so important on this team as he's more innovative with his approaches but also quite thoughtful#he's young and still has a lot to learn but he is leading the innovation of the team's strategy alongside kasumi#like being so proficient at advanced ninpo and pushing further and further to better himself and create new techniques is really neat and#i don't think people give him enough credit like he's literally the backbone of this team

However, while I appreciate Nagi a great deal and some of that appreciation has grown due to the influence of others, I still feel as though Nagi is underappreciated from a general standpoint. I do think that there's a lot of value to his character, especially as he's the youngest and still trying to find his footing which I feel a lot of younger people could relate to. I just don't think that characters have to be the strongest or have the grandest solo victories to be impactful and important to a story and I want Nagi to be appreciated for who he is.

What are your writing weaknesses? banter/comedy !!!! this is really a comparative one imo cause i know i've done banter and comedy well but i've also seen it done better and i think it's an area i don't particularly excel in apart from once in a blue moon. which is fine by me!

on s4 of my legend of korra rewatch and im still not rockin with asami im sorry

imo she is SO boring and somehow is a perfect combination of wasted potential mixed with being borderline completely unnecessary

and also in regards to her relationship with korra i think it is so flat. and it doesnt even have to be!!! they could have been SO interesting! but no they are so bleh to me

btw i havent read the comics and ive heard really great things about her and korra’s relationship so i’ll just take everyones word for it and i understand a lot of her and korra’s lack of chemistry in the show has to be chalked up to the writers not being able to do much bc its nickelodeon and i get that!

i just feel like 90% of the time when shes a point of focus (which is hardly ever btw. circling back to that “unnecessary” part) i just wanna YAWN. in s4 she has an interesting arc w her father but up until that point she just felt like such a filler person that i did not give a fuck about this suddenly interesting storyline! the show did not make me care ab asami so no im not gonna all of a sudden care after 3 seasons of blah!

i know im being a hating ass bitch but i just feel really strongly ab this.

i will say, in general i think the legend of korra struggles with keeping up w their characters and giving them relevant storylines while also keeping their relationships in tact so it would make sense that they all are still friends. like idk there were lots of times where i was like “ok mako and bolin being here/doing this is a stretch”. and i just feel this way the strongest w asami.

i think if atla didnt do this SO perfectly then it wouldnt seem as bad in tlok. but in atla i cannot think of a single time where any characters’ storylines or interactions w one another felt forced. it all felt so natural.

Hello there! I hope you don’t mind my asking you this, but I’ve been quite busy with many things, so I haven’t exactly been updated with the NCT fandom, and they’re technically the only K-pop group that I write (and can write) for, but I’m not entirely sure if fans still read or write for Jaehyun anymore..? I know it’s helpful to write for one’s own enjoyment, but I still would like to have an audience whom I know can get to read what I have written; but I’m not so sure that I’d still have much of an audience writing for him. I did see a few latest posts on some of his fan-fiction tags, but the Jaehyun-centric writers I know of do not seem to be so active anymore, and I personally do not see as much demand, if I’m even looking in the correct places. Most of whom I see are being written about are NCT DREAM, and that’s still NCT, I know; but, as a writer, I’m more into writing for just Jaehyun alone and maybe a little of Mark. If it’s not at all offensive or odd to ask this, do you think it’d still be worthwhile to continue what I’m writing, with Jaehyun as a muse? I meant to have this story done and published about a year ago already, but life happened so suddenly; and now that I believe I have the time, I’m not so sure that there will still be people who’d read. I mean, I like writing and will still write, of course, regardless of if I have many readers; but it’s just with this that I’d be happy to have at least fifty people read what I wrote, but I’m not so sure if people are still even interested anymore or if the tides of the fandom’s interest have already turned elsewhere.

i truthfully cannot recall the last time i personally sought out a jaehyun fic to read. however i think that there are still some great writers around that write for him!! i know nova (@smileysuh) has some great fics up for him :D

my advice is always going to be to do what makes you happiest !!! if it makes you happy to write for jaehyun (and mark sometimes) then that is exactly what you should do :D i would rather read a story abt a member i don’t particularly care abt where i can tell the author put so much time and love into it than read a story abt a member i DO like and the fic feels reluctant /contrived almost 🤔 like i’ve def written things for members i didn’t rly care abt at the time bc i used to take requests and just do what people asked of me. but i think that starting out your writing journey like this, almost relying on external forces to keep you going, can be risky bc it makes it harder for you as a writer to figure out your voice and your own identity.

so i say do what feels the most true to you and your works will reach the right audience with time and a lil bit of elbow grease!!!!! i def think there’s still a jaehyun audience and i hope they’ll appreciate your works!!

Hi! I'm introducing some friends to the untamed and making some notes on where the netflix subs don't give enough information/good translations, according to the fandom. I saw your translation of the 'to die by your hand' scene and it KILLED me, so I was wondering if there are any other particular scenes you think it's important to note a different translation? Thank you so much if you can!

ooh so there aren't any scenes i can think of where the translation falls so so short of the actual emotion and meaning as much as that one, however there are definitely some less dramatic instances.

in general, i would say that mandarin (and a lot of other languages from what i've heard) has a lot more inherent emotional depth than english, so in translation, a lot of the subtitles sound very emotionally neutral or ambivalent when they really aren't.

the instance of this that sticks out to me the most is during the confrontation between wei wuxian and jiang cheng at the guanyin temple (ep 48, ~9 minutes in) where wuxian says to jiang cheng「都不要放在心上了」(dou bu yao fang zai xin shang), which the subtitles translate as "please don't keep it in your heart," which i'm actually not really mad at as a translation, but it's just not a phrase used much in english, so it sounds slightly awkward/doesnt convey the emotional context of that phrase.

so for context, mandarin has multiple ways of saying, loosely, "don't worry." there's「不要擔心」(bu yao dan xin), which is probably the most common and versatile to say it, and there's「不要放在心上」(bu yao fang zai xin shang), which is the one wuxian says to jiang cheng. (there's other ways too, they're just not rly relevant here) the literal translation of it is "do not put it on your heart," which the netflix is pretty close to, but ofc that doesn't tell u much abt usage. the way i've explained it in the past was, say u made a mistake at work and were beating urself up over it.「不要擔心」is something your coworker or boss might say to you to essentially say "hey it's no big deal, don't worry about it, ur fine;" it can be very casual. whereas, once you get home and start talking abt ur bad day at work,「不要放在心上」is more likely something your parent/sibling/partner/other loved one would say to you as they put a bowl of ur favorite soup in front of u. it has a level of inherent familiarity and deeper desire to comfort the person ur talking to than「不要擔心」. (note: i say inherent bc「不要擔心」doesnt have to always be casual/relatively emotionally neutral, it can be said w emotion ofc but the words themselves do not carry as much emotion as「不要放在心上」.

other than that, i’m not remembering any other specific scenes rn (if i remember smth, i’ll rb w the addition and @ you), but one thing that happens throughout the show is translation discrepancy when characters are addressing each other. for example, when wuxian and jiang cheng talk to yanli, the subtitles always have them both addressing her by name, but in chinese, family members often dont address each other by name, like my younger brothers both call me 姐 (jie), which means older sister. jiang cheng calls yanli 阿姐 (a-jie) most of the time (the 阿 at the beginning is just a prefix used in front of names and other forms of address to express familiarity, it’s the same character used in a-yuan). wuxian calls yanli 師姐 (shijie), which is what you call a senior female fellow student studying under the same master/in the same school/etc.

nie huaisang calls mingjue 大哥 (dage)/哥 (ge); 哥 means older brother and 大 means big, so 大哥 is often used for the eldest brother (esp common if there are multiple brothers). an interesting thing is that wangji does not call xichen 哥 or any variation of it, rather he calls him 兄長 (xiong zhang), which also means older brother but is a term of respect and much more formal, so that’s also a reflection of their characters and upbringing. 兄長 is not in common use nowadays but 哥 very much still is.

after nie mingjue, lan xichen, and jin guangyao take their oath of sworn brotherhood, they also change their forms of address with each other. for example, guangyao calls xichen 二哥 (er ge), which means second older brother (since xichen is the second oldest) and calls mingjue 大哥 (like huaisang does). (i feel like i vaguely remember guangyao being called 三弟 (san di), which means third younger brother, by someone but don’t remember if it was xichen or mingjue.)

(also impt to note that in chinese culture, familial terms as forms of address aren’t strictly reserved for family (whether that be blood or found). for example, in a casual setting, you can address any woman who is your parents’ age or between their age and your grandparents age as 阿姨 (a-yi) (or name + 阿姨), which is the term for your maternal aunt, and you can address any man of the same age range as 叔叔 (shu shu), which is what you’d call your paternal uncle. similarly in a familiar/casual setting, you can call women older than you but younger than your parents 姐姐/name + 姐, like the daughters, who are all younger than me, of my parents’ friends call me jessie jie-jie. and you can call men in the same age range 哥哥/name + 哥, like how wang yibo calls xiao zhan, zhan-ge. the same applies for people younger than you, with which you would use 妹妹, younger sister, and 弟弟, younger brother.)

another example is that jin guangshan calls jiang fengmian 江兄 (jiang xiong), 江being his family name ofc and 兄 meaning brother (same character as in 兄長, which wangji calls xichen), since they’re of the same age and status and their wives are sworn sisters. xichen, on the other hand, calls fengmian 江宗主 (jiang zong zhu), which means sect leader jiang. in the subtitles, these are often just translated as “you,” when they’re talking directly to him. 

so in general, there is a lot of information abt characters’ relationships, level of familiarity with each other, age, etc that is contained in their forms of address that just doesn’t come across in the netflix subs, since those default to their names like 80% of the time.

- bigmonsteras is someone whose art i love, they do a lot of peace walker stuff that's rly good! - daydreamycrustacean posts quite a bit of mg stuff and i rly like their art too, they've done some great comics. - 730chocolate has a really unique style, so i like their stuff a lot, altho they're not super active. - pyersiki is also someone i rly like, they draw a lot of kaz content lol which is great. - sgushyonka has some rly good mg stuff, they did some cool pieces as well as funny stuff. - someone who is pretty active is the esteemed ba7land ...they draw a lot of uh. bara stuff like Very Big Tits big boss but i mean good for them. they do a range of stuff actually some cute snake eater content tbh. - pe4cewalker is doing some rly nice art of, uh, surprise surprise, peace walker related stuff, some very good kaz content. - kokirby has a cool style and did some great ocelots although i don't know how active they are metal gear wise. - berserkbrandee seems to be fairly active, they do some cute otasune stuff. - littlenim does some lovely art, cool style and does mgs3/pw as well as otasune era stuff. - jxthics has some great stuff although they're not as active now mg wise i think, but i like them a lot. - crybabimeiri has done some really lovely pieces but not as active mg wise at the moment either. - groznisad has a really fun art style, they posted recently so i hope they're somewhat active. - pejuad has some very cool stuff, i love their solid snake pieces, v interesting style - truthful-tidings used to do mgs stuff, i think not as much now, but their ocs and other stuff looks cool lol - gncbigboss posts mgs art occasionally, they did some cool sniper wolfs i seem to remember - wingedtrumpet is a blog i just noticed the other day, they did a post with some funky looking raidens, so one to watch maybe

i guess also just keep checking the mgs tumblr tag for new posts/new artists cropping up! i know tumblr messed up the search so that if you go to the 'recent' section you get a load of stuff unrelated to mgs, but if you click on the 'tagged' section instead, then you actually will get recent posts that are almost all mgs related. (that's what i’ve found on mobile anyway lol)

im sure there are many good artists i’ve forgotten or not come across, these are the somewhat active/current mgs ones that come to mind though anyway. i’m only on tumblr for fandom stuff, not twitter, so i guess there’s good stuff on there i might be missing. While it says “period-typical sexism” in the tags, I’ll be honest, the sexism is based on my own encounters with academia over the past couple of years. I haven’t written in anything that I haven’t experienced, witnessed, or had described to me in some way as a graduate student. I’m not making stuff up or even pulling from other careers. The reader’s experience is different than mine in that she’s already a professor and works in a totally different field and what not, but it’s all based on real life stuff I’ve seen for myself. I think it’s relevant and adds an interesting layer to the story. Plus, I’m processing a lot of my own experiences through this fic – and if it helps anyone else in any way, then that’s even better. 💗

You feel it in your heart and treat people accordingly and are mindful about your actions. You also have no responsibilities beyond what you are able to give.That's how you live ethically. Being politically active in a traditional way is no guarantee at all that someone is a good person improving lives for the better.

ok so i had this ask in my inbox for like, at least half a year, but i’m going through my old asks now bc i’m in a mood to reply. i’ve tried to answer this ask at least once before but then closed the tab on accident or something (which also happened with a more recent ‘tell 5 things abt yourself / tag 10 followers‘ ask).

though i haven’t answered this ask publicly, i’ve often thought of your message throughout this year. seeing leftism as an active effort to continuously self-improve on being a better person really resonates with me. i can’t say this has fully given me a peace of mind, since i still feel like i’m not doing enough, when looking at how my friend is actively talking to others in a leftist organization i do think i could benefit a lot from talking to others like that, but i don’t know how to specifically affiliate with a group and i do tend to feel very ashamed and horrible in a social group after even the smallest struggle or a disagreement in a personal encounter. i deal very poorly with confrontation and tend to cry when it happens so seeking out a political organization / group seems counteractive.

this idea of self-improvement did help me though. i used to have this mindset in which i took everything i knew for granted. i never fully believe myself but i did notice that i put more trust in words of people who didn’t challenge things i already was taught to think (e.g. western ideas of how certain things should be). during the re-surge of BLM protests in recent months i realized just how i didn’t listen enough to Black voices and thinking i knew enough about this in 2016, or even wrote about a discussion on twitter which truly was not within my right to discuss. i think this has diminished a lot over the years, but i’m still finding myself sometimes seeking validation / acknowledgement for doing something good or offering support, as if people should deserve an award for showing basic human decency and respect. so i’m still not anywhere near i want to be, and i don’t think there should be an end goal either way, because to think you can’t improve any further is where you lose a progressive drive (which is quite relevant to the Netherlands, which keeps portraying itself as a progressive country bc of gay marriage, freedom of religion and women’s rights, while falling behind with other EU countries on many aspects such as the environment, social programs, anti-racism and the former three motives). i see old people who call themself leftist, but have decided to reach a point in their lives where they stop empathizing with groups they don’t understand and thus use quite conservsative views. i don’t think millenials, gen z whatnot are excempt from this end result unless we get rid of this idea that someone can at one point be - or already is - politically enlightened enough.

to touch upon the last aspect to this ask and what i was most concerned about, i.e. showing improvement and caring for others at an interpersonal level when something more isn’t possible: you’re absolutely right. i so often feel so stressed and defeated by everything going on in the world and i want to do more, help relieve as much pain as i can, get more inspired and edicated, whatnot. and i do not want to use this as an excuse but the reality is that i really find it hard to connect to other people due to autism and the continuous embarrassment i feel about myself, and only recently i realized i was so depressed 7 years ago after high school exams due to burnout and i never fully recovered from this. i’m in a somewhat better place mentally bc i live with my friend since 2 years now instead of with my parents, but i still feel lethargic and emotionally unstable and i’m not getting much done. ideally, i’d be doing a lot more than spreading information online / trying to unlearn racist, classist, ableist etc ideas / going to only 4 demonstrations within a couple of years, but that’s probably not realistic for now. i really cannot handle confrontation and currently i’m still hoping to get a more structured week schedule and less stress about income so i could hopefully get a better sense of what i could do in the future. admittedly i still feel bad for engaging with my special interests so much every day and often trying to shut out other things but maybe that’s just what i need for the time being. just, man, i thought the world would be inhabitable by 2020-2030 when i was a kid learning about climate change in primary school and i feel so helpless in all of this.

YEAH SO I’ve actually thought about this quite a bit??

and what I keep coming back to is Erasure, because I think that’s the main time we really fully undeniably see how much Narvin has changed. like yes you can see it in little ways in lots of other places throughout the second half of Gallifrey, and you could say that it doesn’t count as much because it’s literally Narvin himself talking about how much he’s changed. but when he’s telling the story of  Bellascon, and afterwards, when he’s telling Leela that this is why he needed her in his life so much, because of how much knowing her has changed him, I have to believe him.

and then I think Time War really hammers this home, and it’s one of the things about that arc that I CAN say the writers got very right and is an important part of the consummation of the character’s arc. because we see in several stories how bothered Narvin is by having to involve outside people in the Time War, how hard he fights to protect innocents caught in the crossfire. we don’t have any big speeches or anything, but it’s in the way he talks about the idea of sacrificing entire planets full of mothers and fathers and children who don’t even know about the War or why it’s happening. one of Narvin’s defining character traits that’s very consistent throughout all of Gallifrey is his honesty--he cannot lie, and whatever it is he feels and thinks is written all over him (and since this is an audio drama, it means the audience can usually trust that whatever emotions seem to be indicated by his voice are pretty legit--and honestly?? all the kudos to Seán Carlsen for the way he pulls this off. I’ll never be over this man’s acting skills).

and I mean there’s also a discussion to be had about whether Narvin even HAS been “redeemed” in the traditional sense people think of whenever they say this about characters.

but the TL;DR version of all that ^^ would be: Narvin’s “”redemption”” is mostly seen in his switch of allegiances, from being solely focused on the Greater Good of Gallifrey and the safety of the timelines to being mostly focused on people (most notably, Romana and Leela, but also just people in general). but both Erasure and the Time War arc are necessary to fully appreciate just how much Narvin changes, not just in his allegiances--he’s not just doing bad things for a different side now, but he’s actually caring about people in a way he never did before and he’s making decisions differently and yes, his entire worldview has shifted.

SOOOO, to address the original points the original OP made:

- was it logical and narratively satisfying? imo, absolutely!!

- what message does it send? well this is just kind of my personal interpretation, but I think it sends the message that no matter how you’ve been raised, the false views you may have held in the past, and the ways you’ve hurt people by making decisions informed by those views, you’re not beyond hope!! you can still change and be better!! you might carry shame and sadness for the things you did in the past, those choices might still come back to haunt you, but you can change, and that’s the most important thing!!

and now that I’ve written all this I just really really wanna talk about how this post applies to Brax and all my feelings about that 😅

discourse about redemption arcs would vastly improve if instead of always asking “is this character redeemable?” people started asking “what message would it send to redeem this character?” and “would it be logical or satisfying on a narrative level to redeem this character?”

So, my reasoning is that you'd fit very, very well with Deacy mainly because of being both stubborn and emotional, because he too was quiet, not very outspoken, pretty much a smol bean(we don't talk about perv Deacy when saying this), but definitely got his way with the band.
