It’s been a LONG. Time since I’ve had this dream. But as a kid I had a dream where I’d keep going back to my grandparent’s land and in this dream there were lions, zebras and some other animals. But I would run around playing with the lions as a kid. And I had that dream again! Except I’m as old as I am now and I went back there expecting there to be nothing. Then two lions came over it was the one I used to play with and her cub 😭 I’ve never had this happen before in any of my dreams before. Uhhhh and I was playing with them again I got to give my old lion friend so many scritches and got laid on by her I don’t think she was going to let me leave like no I haven’t seen you in forever.

♪ Art dump!! ♪

My stuff isn't the best but here's some things that turned out decent/good! I have explanations for all of them, just look at the number that it says on the picture and uhh yeah I think you get it.

Ok they're kind of all over the place so I'm happy that I added the numbers. ANYWAYS!!

1- Hako is a silly little character that I've had for like a year or more now. Basically, he's a demigod/Half-God, a son of Ares (his dad hates him). Ares forces him to go through the same dreams every night, where he wears a helmet with "BLOODSHED"/"CAEDES" on it (which he also has IRL), and he has to fight and stuff. He also has a friend, son of Hermes, named Victory. Love them!!

2- Anastasia, my femme self rep! I don't have an ushanka (Russian trapper hat) yet, but I am going to buy one when I get paid. Very excited already, it's been my dream for like two years now!

3- Little sketch I did whilst listening to Hansel. No backstory or anything, well the backstory of the song. Just wanted to draw something eerie and long haired! (And experiment with how the hair and earrings move when the head is turned!)

4- The same 'character' as number 3, except a full body.

5- Anatomy practice. Overly simplified version of my character Alexandra/Sasha. In one universe she's this cool secret spy thing, in the other she's a gay theatre kid XD.

6- Ricky as a Zolarian in my style! (RTC obviously)

7- Redrew some very very old characters from a short story I wrote like a year ago called Blood On Snow (I'm so edgy I know). The top one doesn't have a name (it's in I-perspective) and is chronically depressed and dies and stuff and the bottom one is their guardian angel Dawn (don't mind his jawline PLEASE).

8- Two of my cat OC's!! Once again, a redraw from a year ago when I first made them. They both look a little different now and have much much more backstory and story and lore and their universe and other OC's in it are fully fleshed out. Top one is Smiley, bottom one is Eris.

9- My blogsona!! Yeah no that's it.

10- Two characters from this story I'm currently writing called Dark Is The Night (based on a Soviet era song). The left one is Aleksandr and the right one is Dmitri, yes I make 90% of everything I do Slavic ANY QUESTIONS? Basically they're uhh G A Y and have different thoughts of their relationship..wheras Dmitri is super wholesome and just loves spending time with Aleksandr and that they understand eachother n stuff, Aleks is..well..uhh..the fact that I had to block out his thoughts says enough I think.

ok so the main idea for the world/story (gonna call it the story from here on out) is that people can conjure weapons from elements (or at least some people can, haven't really figured out the criteria yet) What element their weapon is conjured of depends on their heritage/what country they're from. I haven't figured out a lot of countries yet, but there are two major ones that I have figured out. The japanese inspired kingdom with the element of light/sun and the german inspired kingdom (might branch out to some other central european countries) with the lightning element. By the time of the story these two countries are at war with each other and have been for quite a while (thinking about making it a 100 year war, seems like it would be cool)

Archer lady is a high ranking general in the sun nations army, and she wields a sun-energy Yumi (which is a traditional japanese bow that is very tall) Another great drawing of her below that I'm very proud of

The entire sun kingdom has a whole bird motif going on so that is encorperated in her design with the feathers on the yumi. She is also, like, early to mid 50's in age

There is also another character that I have yet to draw from the sun kingdom that is just stuck in my brain but I love her. She is the kings right hand woman and she will wield a long kind of katana (have to figure out which kind exactly) I also want her to have a helmet with a bird motif, somewhat like this (ignore fake png please)

Also, the way I want sunlight weapons to look somewhat like this, with a white light in the middle surrounded my a warm soft orange (ignore that this is lightning which is litterally their main enemy, in my defense this is sunlight spear from dark souls which is both sun and lightning)

But neither of these to people are the main character, the main character is this guy

He is also yet unnamed but my irl friends (aside from pie) have taken to calling him john lightning (NOT HIS NAME) do with that information what you will

anyway, notice that he has a katana (japanese) that is lightning (german)? huh how curious, wonder why that could be...

To make a long story short (you can find his story in more detail under my save tag on my blog if you want, this post is just for an overview of the story, my save tag is "save" archer lady is also there as well as a demon slayer oc) His dad is an emmigrant from lightning kingdom who fled to sun kingdom after [something I have not decided yet] and fell in love with mcs mom and they had mc. Dad died when mc was pretty young but he lived a happy life with his mom until one day the lady with the bird helmet came to their village and slaughtered all the villagers because of a rumor of a lightning kingdom spy. She then kills mcs mom right in front of him and mc charges out from their hiding place full of anger to kill. The lady is surprised, but very interrested in mc because of his mixture of the cultures, which is a thing that almost never happens, especially between sun and lightning, and therefor decides to let him live, but she does cut of his arm as a warning. Then he ran. he ran far. he ran until he couldn't see the village anymore. And now he was alone.

After this I haven't really had his story as set in stone, but I want to things, I want him to rebel against the sun kingdoms tyranny and I REALLY want his story to follow maslows hierarchy of needs in some way, I think that would be very interesting.

That's about all I have so far, the sun kingdom is definitly the most fleshed out so far since it's where it all takes place, but I also really like lightning and german weapons and will definitly be expanding that at some point.

The things I also want to include are things like

A middle eastern inspired nation (the middle east has some sick weapons, especially their curved swords, fucking love middle eastern swords)

A fire kingdom (obviosly)

An extensive lightning kingdom noble family

RETAINERS FOR THE NOBLE FAMILY!!! FUCKING LOVE RETAINERS AND UNDYING LOYALTY

possibly a spanish/italian country, they have some cool weapons that I could do something with, also france, but I need to research their weapons more

A water place (MAYBE with ice but that might also be sepperate)

ANDDDD I've got like two idea for a fic and the first one is a little more...how do I say it? Mafiacore? So imagine, person a and person b. person b, is given a mission to go get some imp documents that person a has (very dangerous leader of a mafia clan) which has things that's are against person B's boss so hence he's given the mission so like...an undercover spy maybe...AND A MAFIA AHHH! But as the law suggests they end up falling in love but the catch is...the real villain is person B's boss and person a had already met person b once that's how he felt a connection with him😭

The next one is Bcz I've been heavily obsessed with Lana del rey and i thought of this while listening to Salvatore....so, imagine like person a is a really vintage girl, obsessed with books, but for research purposes and to unfold the secrets of this world (not like us 😔) and so there's this Library she loves going to but she wants to read more into mythical creatures and stuff but the library restricts the specific area, so, as any protagonist would do, our person a, breaks into the library after its closing hours and goes to the restricted area that is rumoured to be haunted and stuff, there..she meets person b. A really peculiar guy, beautiful, but peculiar with a fashion sense of the 40s and 50s wearing, those suits and perfect hair that fell onto his forehead angelicly.

And as the story unfolds, they both start to get closer to the each other, of course I'd add more drama to it, but the catch for this one is that....person b is not real.

much cute very fun. the look on those 10th graders’ faces? priceless. you’re right, it’s exactly like that. and people looking good with a certain kind of frame- you know how long i took to find a frame i looked decent in? 5 years. i got glasses when i was in 4th grade (it was genetic okay and definitely not because i watched a lot of tv. at least i did better than my dad, who got his when he was in class two.) and till 9th i used to wear these stupid frames that looked downright terrible. they were literally purple. who tf wears purple frames. why doesn’t anyone hold us back when we make horrible life decisions when we’re younger.

Fans tend to forget that most Voltron viewers are casual viewers who don’t notice all the foreshadowing

I think a lot of people get frustrated with Voltron’s writing because sometimes it feels like we’re waiting for so long between the moment when we suspected something due to foreshadowing and the big reveal. What makes it worse is that in the meantime we keep projecting how we would like it to happen. And with fanfiction writers, comic artists and so on, we also see how others see it and we get excited about it, and sometimes are a bit disappointed when what happens in the show is not how we expected.

For instance, one of the first things that lets you suspect that Keith might have galra blood is in “return to the Balmera” when he interacts with Galra technology with his hand and it works. At least it’s the first thing I’ve personally noticed (I know he had his knife since episode one, but you couldn’t conclude much about it aside that it seemed important to him). And then evidence piles up, and the wait is kind of agonizing specially considering how we see Keith getting anxious about it...until the actual reveal in “Blade of Marmora”, 12 episodes later, right ?

Well yes, if you noticed this. Thing is... I’m pretty sure most viewers don’t.

Look, I’ve got 3 irl friends who are watching Voltron. They’re all adults, and I wouldn’t even call them “casual watchers” because they can be quite analytical in the media they consume, and some of them are actually storytellers themselves (in one case in a professional way as the person is a comic artist). At least two of them had realized Pidge’s identity from the photo in the pilot episode (which I had missed hahaha), so they’re definitely not blind.

None of them had caught that anything was weird with Shiro after his return. They all were REALLY surprised and not entirely convinced when I talked to them about clone theory and possible brainwashing.

In my case, when Shiro (or Kuron) escaped in “the Journey”, I was already wary at how easy his escape was, and was wondering if it was set up. When he saw that operation room with that other Shiro strapped to the table... for me it was such a punch in the gut that I literally had to pause the episode while cursing like a sailor and trying to catch my breath. Seriously.

Well... None of my friends had noticed anything. They just thought it was part of Shiro / Kuron’s flashback, and they hadn’t thought that usually his flashbacks are triggered by something...

So I asked one of my friends when she had started noticing about Keith’s origins. She told me “well given he looks entirely human, I hadn’t suspected anything at all until the Blade of Marmora episode.”

I’m putting the rest behind a "read more” because as usual this got really long.

Same with Keith becoming a Blade. I think a clever viewer realizes as soon as he sees the BOM episode that it looks kind of like an initiation. I personally only realized it in “Best laid plans” when Kolivan stepped in when Keith wanted to go on what he called a “suicide mission”. I thought something along the lines of “wait Kolivan why are you stepping in here he’s not one of your... oh sh!t he is one of your Blades now, isn’t he ?!” and Thace calling Keith a fellow Blade cemented it. So I got excited : are we going to see Keith join the Blades next season ? But, it was not addressed at all in s3, so I thought the show wasn’t going that route and that I had gotten excited over nothing. And then season 4 , 13 episodes after the BOM episode ? Keith joins the Blades. I was super excited first and then when he left Voltron I thought  “nooo I wanted it BUT NOT LIKE THAT !!!” lol.

I haven’t asked any of my friends about that. But I bet the casual watcher’s reaction is... to not think about this at all until they see Keith being a Blade in “Code of Honnor” and go “Oh ! Cool ! Keith’s a Blade, now !”

From the 2 more in depth conversations I had, my friends hadn’t noticed anything about Keith and Shiro’s backstory either, aside from “they knew each other”. They hadn’t realized at all that Keith got expelled from the garrison around the time where the Kerberos mission failed, and that those facts could be linked. We’re all here, trying to imagine it, writing / reading I don’t know how many “pre-kerberos” metas, fanfictions, fancomics, edits, etc. The average viewer probably just realizes they knew each other and seemed to be friends (and some even miss that). Even if they are curious about the back-story in the moment, when they don’t get it they don’t think much about it.

And look at Allura’s space magic ark : there are 17 episodes between Allura using magic to heal the Balmera, and her using it again against Haggar in “Blackout” ; then 13 episodes again before she uses it in “a New Defender”, and then 6 before the “White Lion”. Frustrating ? Yes. I bet the average, casual viewer, doesn’t think much about it and goes “oh, right, she does have space magic, that’s cool !” when she does use it.

And 23 episodes between Keith’s dad explaining that Keith’s mom gave him the BOM knife in “Blade of Marmora” and Keith finally finding Krolia in “Bloodlines”. But not every watcher expected Keith to find his mom. I know I hoped he’s find some answers, but I didn’t expect him to actually find her.

So here we are, waiting for season 6, and being impatient that “project Kuron” ark to finally come to an end, because we have been worried about it since season 3. Well, if, like me, the foreshadowing about Shiro’s arm being used to alter his memories in “Shiro’s escape” (s2) made you worry, then you’ve been anxious about it quite some time now.

After all, it’s been 14 episodes since “the Journey” so it feels about time for this to come to an end... Which is not that much longer than for Keith’s galra reveal (13 episodes) or Keith becoming a Blade (13 episodes). I admit it’s a particularly distressing ark : for “Kuron” who is in a dreadful situation ; for Shiro, if there is a double, because if that’s not Shiro... where is Shiro ? Is he ok ? Is he even alive ?! (oh please let him be alive). For the rest of the team, because of the way Haggar uses Kuron to spy on them. For Keith because he will be impacted by anything that affected Shiro, and because it really seems to me that his departure from Voltron was at least in part due to feeling rejected by Shiro (and the team).

But the casual viewer ? The casual viewer has only realized something was wrong in season 5 when he saw Haggar actually watch through Kuron’s eyes, and with the mindscape incident. He’s certainly hooked now on what will happen next, but not nearly as worried as the viewer who has suspicions since s3 (or even before).

And those viewers ? The viewers who catch the foreshadowing, and who try to see what’s coming ? They are a very little part of the general viewership of the show. And I’m just talking about the engaged viewer who notices stuff. The fans who discuss all that online, listen to every interview, dissect the show image by image, write long metas, or fanfictions or create art around it ? A very very small fraction of the viewership. We’re immersed in it; because well... we interact, and because we see those who interact (for the best and the worse) with the various creators of the show but... a lot of the viewers just enjoy their episodes, don’t dwell on them, and move on until the next season.

Voltron is written in layers so that different kinds of viewers can enjoy it !

Don’t forget that the most important target are young children who might want to play with the toys. Most of them will enjoy the fight sequences, the action, the funny stuff. Later, they’ll remember something like “oh I watched this show, the transformation sequence was cool, my fav lion was the red one and my fav character was Pidge !” and maybe a few of the most significant plot events. Maybe.

Older children might catch a bit more of the story, character arks, and themes. And start to enjoy the more emotional scenes.

The casual teenage or adult viewer will just... go with the flow and enjoy the plot twists when they happen.

The fans of the 80′s Voltron (another target, specially considering that they can have children in the age of watching too)  will mostly either enjoy the changes, or be frustrated about them. They will enjoy shout outs like Sven in “Hole in the Sky” or Allura’s pink armor, and so on. Other than that, their level of involvement can vary from “casual viewer” to “fan”.

Attentive viewers will notice some foreshadowing. They’ll probably be more engaged than the casual watcher because they’ll be more curious about how things will get solved. They might get frustrated when it takes to long to unfold, but mostly they should enjoy the story. (That was me while watching the first 2 seaons). I think attentive watchers are already a minority in the viewership. Honestly, most people I know are not that analytic about what they watch, and are casual watchers, whatever they’re watching.

And then, fans who are attentive watchers but also discuss and exchange theories on internet, and as such, miss even less of the clues ? They are the most engaged, but obviously also the most frustrated. We notice the most, we get more excited about it, we have more expectations because, as we’ve seen the signs, we start thinking about how we would like the story ark to be solved. Even if it feels there are many fans because we see a lot of them in our online experience... they are a very small part of the general viewership.

So when people get frustrated that we don’t have the answers for everything yet, and say it’s bad writing that it takes so long, or that some stuff isn’t addressed immediately... I’d like them to consider that the show isn’t written only for them. It’s actually quite impressive that this cartoons provides enough depth for us to be involved that much, to make crazy theories because foreshadowing, to make big character analysis because they are that well developed. In many tv shows, even ones for adults, you just can’t analyze that far. Because there’s just not that much to analyze !

But at the same time, it is still targeted towards kids. And it is still meant mainly as, well... commercials for robot toys.

Also, Voltron is clearly written as one, long, story. The seasons are only chapters. It doesn’t work like, say... Doctor Who, where every season is a story ark on its own that reaches a conclusion. It is normal to still have questions at the end of a new season. When we will have all the answers... the story will have reached it’s ending !

So yeah, just my take on this, and I might be wrong but... really, I keep seeing fans being frustrated and considering that every watcher experiences the cartoon as they do but... I know that they don’t. A lot of people don’t.

And yes, people, it’s a cartoon for children. Stop comparing it to stuff written only for adults. Here the writers have to juggle so that children stay engaged and that adult viewers still have fun. And they managed to have a part of the viewers who have become deeply engaged fans. Honestly, I find it quite amazing.

HMMMMMM i cant think of any right now but I do have like three or four aus im tossing around my skull right now. I drawn a shit ton for them, but havent posted on my art blog yet:

-Adventure AU: sucked into digiworld like in Adventure. The shit with Yuujin goes down like it did with that girl in Spy Kids 3. Also Haru has the Crest of Light (”Be My Light”) and Yuujin has Kindess (”keep being the kind Yuujin”). Also all the mons have ugly-cute In-Training forms. Please, imagine: Tamagatchimon. Also Eri=Courage; Astra=Sincerity/Purity; Rei=Friendship; and if you count Hajime as a Chosen Child=Knowledge.

-Magic Mafia AU: The kids are all adult crime bosses and the mon’s their cool magic gijinka bodyguards. This AU is really just an excuse to draw cool outfits, and dramatic poses. Eri is a media mogul, Astra traditional yakuza, Rei a hacker (duh), and Haru and Yuujin are a western-eastern mafia fashion blend and starcrossed lovers. Gatchmon and Offmon have really cool swords.

-Meet-At-A-Concert-And-Make-Out AU- The BEST kind of AU. More humanized mons, Doka is still a total geek and takes his friends Gatch and Haru to see his waifu/irl friend Eri performing with her band (that Astra and Musi are also in as like, sick DJs). In the audience is also a very nervous Off clinging to his bff Yuujin. With all the dancing/moshing/high-energy, Haru and Yuujin meet each other, get separated from their friends, and make out in a hallway with concert music pumping through the walls. Then they are separated 4EVA until Haru begs his hacker buddy to track the hot boy down. Also theres some cute little GatchOff doodles I’m not getting into right now. 

-Single Parent AU- MY FAVORITE ONE. The kids are all single parents and the mon’s are kindergarteners. Astra wears Yukata’s exclusively and has a fun parenting youtube. Eri is a former idol and now is very butch, buff, and trying desperately to woo Ai while dealing with her son worried this new lady is going to take his mom from him. Rei is a single parent not only to his mon but his much-younger-brother after their parents tragically died so he’s dealing with that too. Mienumon, Sakusimon, and Satellamon are 1st grade bullies. Haru is called to the school one day because his son has been fighting with another boy and surprise! The other boy’s dad is Yuujin, his ex best friend he hasnt spoken to in years since they had a falling out. They dramatically but quietly fall back in love and Gatchmon has to deal with joint babysitting evenings with Offmon who HE HATE’S AND WILL NEVER ACCEPT AS HIS POSSIBLE FUTURE STEP BROTHER until they must team up to defeat their evil babysitter Charismon.

Hello Jane! :) <3 I've caught up with the finale and only 2 words for that thing: disappointment and underwhelming. The weakest finale of AoS but I guess it goes well with the weakest season. :/ Because yes I don't like this season (all my irl friends have quitted during it, shippers and not shippers) and I don't get the consensus that it's the best one... For me they have learned nothing, it's the mix of s2 and s3 flaws and adding its own. I mean since when angst on angst on angst etc means (1)

(2) good storytelling ? There is no sense of balance in the story. (s2) To appreciate the ups and downs, you actually have to have both! like a roller coaster! This year its a endless downhill. And worse, the story is more and more driven (progresses) by action and plot twist and mostly for shock value... its the level 0 of storytelling and sense of rhythm. All that bring deus ex machina and plot holes and adding bullshit storylines like love triangle doesn't help (roboMay, Aida) (s3 flaws).

(3) Action and twist must serve the story and not leading it, it’s nonsense. Most of the writers in Ao3 like you, understand and deal better with all those basics writing principles. WTH? As for the flaws of s4 itself, they wanted to deal with very serious themes and used harsh imageries to do it, why not? but not only they were only used as plot device, but they were also mistreated and not resolved in any way. And worse, they don't acknowledge anything. You already know it hurt me a lot. :(

(4)I've seen people taking time for excuse, seriously? Like any other job they are accountable of what they do and how they use their time. It's bad writing. When you chose to write arcs it means that in everyone of them, you have a beginning, a middle and a end, and an opening for something else. But resolution doesn't just kill the bad guy, which basically all the finale did and GR, nothing else... bad writing again. And that ridiculous ending and cliffhanger... As for FS nothing, the void,

(5) no discussion, no meaningful interactions, no smiles, no relationship status. Complete nonsense! All of their build up, pumped up storylines fell flat at the end and the wins were for someone else (daisy, radcliffe, GR) and back to being support character. What did Jemma do at the end? she didn't save Fitz, she just killed a fake dad and shoot an unwoundable Aida... And all the tease around them with their forever love for nothing, its cool to say it but show it, and not just them telling

(6)other people that they love each other. WTF!? FS season without FS in it Bravo! -- Not even a tiny pay off... I have no illusion it would change because I'm sure they don't know how to write them out of angst, and if they are apart again. No thank you. Sorry Jane i talked a lot but i'm really not hyped in any way by s5, I loved my fun spy show with FS as main interest. ^^ Now it's the shadow of it. Anyway thank you Jane for being always amazing! I have to admit, I was disappointed and underwhelmed by the finale, too. GR felt like a deus ex machina, FS was not resolved, and the whole thing was so rushed that I didn’t really care much that they were in space. They crammed too much in for there to be any time for the emotional impact to be felt. Becoming GR, really, was enough of a twist that they didn’t need to add going into space. And actually, if I had to pick between the two twists, I would have just done going into space. Tricking AIDA seemed like a flimsy reason for becoming GR. 

(Really, the only thing I can think of is that they were picked up and sent into space BECAUSE he’s the new GR, and that somehow makes him a part of this war Robbie was talking about. Either way, it was too much in too little time. There had to have been a better way to structure that.)

BUT, I will say that it’s hard to compare a network TV show to any other form of media, ESPECIALLY fanfiction. When I write, the story is exactly the length it needs to be, I can involve any character and plot lines I like, and I can literally take years to finish it if I want to. Network TV is different. ABC tells them how many episodes they get and when the episodes will air. They couldn’t add a 23rd episode even if they wanted to, they had to involve ALL the characters because of the actors’ contracts (which is why the birthday video happens in 4722 Hours; they had to get Clark and Chloe in there somehow), and they had to work around things like commercial breaks. Network TV is a very complicated thing with a lot of factors going into it that I, luckily, do not have to deal with as a writer. So when people say they didn’t have time, it’s true that they had a limited amount of time. Could they have made a better use of their time? Certainly. But we must acknowledge that they have limitations we don’t have.

The real mistake they made, I think, was that they spent too much time in the Framework and not enough time in the aftermath. They had a big story, and due to the restrictions ABC gave them, they only had seven episodes in which to tell it. In my opinion, the only way to fit everything in was to make the story a little smaller, and they didn’t want to do that, so we have what we have. A lot of the things they added in were the “rewards” they promised the fans, namely, the return of favorite characters. Maybe you didn’t care for them, but they were the fun parts of this arc that helped add to the balance. 

Of course, I think they focused too much on Evil Fitz and his relationship with AIDA for it to be truly balanced. That’s where all the pain came from, in my experience at least—they went too far showing how EVIL Fitz could be without showing a proper resolution. This is a problem with the greater MCU in general, though—it’s usually all pain, little gain. They need to learn how to tone down the pain or increase the resolution if they truly want to give their fans a satisfying ending.

Unfortunately, I don’t think they see it that way. Jemma shooting AIDA was supposed to be part of the resolution of Jemma’s arc, but I would have happily traded it for a chance for FitzSimmons to finish their conversation, because that’s what we really needed for a resolution. We actually had PLENTY of FitzSimmons love in this arc. Jemma declared her love more openly and boldly than we’ve ever seen her, and Fitz declared his love for her at great risk. You know what we were missing? Them declaring their love to EACH OTHER. Them being TOGETHER after they spent so long being torn apart! And you know, I don’t know if we needed a full conversation. We needed Jemma’s Amen, surely, and then Fitz reaching for her hand in the diner. They had enough time for that. All he had to do was reach for her hand, and for them to share a look and a smile. That would have told us, at least, where they were and where they were going. Elizabeth and Iain are good enough to make that mean more than ten minutes of conversation. But they didn’t add it in because they thought the love declarations and the hug were enough.

So really, the best way to look at it is as of the hug WAS their resolution. Jemma heard his love confession, she gave Fitz the support he needed, and then they apparently resumed their relationship. It’s a big blank to fill in, but I think that’s what they meant to portray.

Anyway, I understand missing the fun spy show with FS! I feel that way, too. Sometimes I feel like we’ve been cheated because we were hooked with a ship that was always together, and now they’re NEVER together. I wish they would bring back some of the humor and togetherness. They do have their more cheerful moments, like when Trip came back, but I definitely think we could use a lot more of the fun we fell in love with. All we can do is send our feedback and hope they listen.

podcast recs

yo what’s up homeslices it’s my 100th post so I figured I’d do a list of podcast recommendations because I listen to a lot of em. I’m going to do it in the (approximate) order of when I first started listening to them. The first podcast I ever listened to was some Sword Art Online podcast but I don’t count that so the first podcast I ever listened to was:

Wolf 359

Wolf 359 is a podcast about a crew of astronauts onboard the USS Hepheastus. It stars communications officer Doug Eiffel, and it’s told through his audio logs. It starts off as a comedy, but quickly transitions into something else. Worry not, though, there’s plenty of comedy throughout the entire story. It has really amazing audio quality at the end which I always love (it’s seirously asmr worthy) and uh yeah space podcasts are my jam

Welcome To Night Vale

WTNV is a lot of people’s gateway into podcasts and chances are you’ve already heard of it but here we go anyway. It’s told in the format of a local radio station set in the town of Night Vale where lots of spooky things happen. To the host of the show and to most of the town, these spooky things are considered normal, and it’s fun to hear our host speak about Glow Clouds (all hail) and floating pyramids in a matter-of-fact tone which is usually pretty funny. There’s a backlog of over 100 episodes, which makes it great to binge. You could also start it wherever you want. I’d suggest looking up a list of plot specific episodes and listening to those first if you don’t want to listen to all of them in order.

The Bright Sessions

This podcast is about a therapist who helps people with superpowers (atypicals) adjust to and control their powers. There’s a few different main characters, and each episode is one of their therapy sessions. At first, they each have their own individual stories, but they intersect fairly soon into it. It’s ending soon (cri cri) so this is one that you might want to start with.

Alice Isn’t Dead

From the same creators of WTNV! This one’s more focused on horror than comedy, and it’s about a woman who’s wife has died, only, as it turns out, she isn’t dead. The only thing she has to go off of is a company: Bay and Creek Shipping, and so she becomes a trucker. The podcast is about her various trips and the things she sees along the way. It’s fairly short, and is currently in it’s third and final (!!!!!) sesson. There’s also a book coming out soon if you don’t want to listen to a podcast.

The Penumbra Podcast

If you’re looking for LGBTQ+ content, this is the podcast for you. It tells a variety of different stories featuring minorities that don't get enough rep in the media. There are two main stories that they’re currently doing. One is Juno Steel, which is about a detective named Juno (and it's on Mars!) He runs into a guy named Rex Glass who… let’s just say he isn’t what he seems. It’s very good but prepare to feel many emotions as we go on adventures with Juno and learn about his past and who he is as a person. The other recurring storyline is The Second Citadel which tells stories from the points of view of many different people all living in the fictional world of The Second Citadel. I’d recommend listening to the Juno Steel episodes and then going back and listening to the rest. There are two horror stories at the beginning which I’d recommend you listen with caution because there are some potentially sensitive topics. They don't impact your listening experience at all though, because they're standalone stories.

Conversations With People Who Hate Me

This one’s another Night Vale Presents podcast. This time it’s a nonfiction podcast where Dylan Marron (a fav and the voice of Carlos on WTNV) calls people who have said negative things about him online, and has a conversation with them. He also monitors conversations between two people sometimes. It’s really great and is something we all need nowadays.

Within the Wires

Last Night Vale Presents one, I swear. I haven’t finished this one yet (last episode yeet) but it tells stories through (first season) relaxation cassettes and (second season) museum tour guides. It’s set in the same world and it connects at the very end. It’s really relaxing because there’s only one voice, and both of the voices (1st and 2nd season) are very nice to listen to.

The Adventure Zone

It took me a very long time to finish this, but trust me, it’s worth it. It’s in its second season now so you’ve got many hours of quality content ahead of you. It’s a dnd campaign (that doesn’t 100% follow the dnd rules) but that doesn’t matter because the storytelling is *chef’s kiss*. It follows the Très Horny Boys (which is not a porn thing @my friends) on their adventures. Anyone who knows me (both here and irl) knows that I have an unhealthy obsession with the McElroy brothers, and this podcast stars them and their dad.

The Far Meridian

TFM is about an agoraphobic woman who lives in a lighthouse that suddenly starts moving to new places every day. It’s all about her learning to deal with her agoraphobia, and her search for her missing brother. It’s a really calming podcast to listen to, and tells a really interesting story. Even if you don’t think that this podcast is one for you, I strongly suggest following their tumblr. They post Gentle Encouragement Monday, which is a cool thing to look at if you aren’t feeling the best, or if you’re just bored one day.

ars PARADOXICA

This one also took me a while to get through, but it’s very interesting and definitely worth the listen. It’s about a woman who accidentally goes back in time to 1943. It’s definitely a more serious podcast, but there are plenty of funny moments, too. It’s ending soon, so now would probably be the time to start. The main character is canonically asexual which is very cool, and there are plenty of characters that address the hardships that minorities faced in the 20th century, as well as the struggles they still face today. There’s also plenty of history (and rewritten history) and it all makes a very interesting podcast.

Inkwyrm

This one’s about the AI caretaker of a fashion magazine and her adventures. It’s another Gay Space Podcast™ and is done by high schoolers (!!) which is EXTREMELY impressive and definitely something that I could probably not do. It’s in its second season right now, I believe, and although the audio quality isn’t for everyone, the story is still good and worth the listen.

OAKPODCAST

This is one that I’m going to relisten to soon because I forget a lot of what happens. It’s about a spy named Holly who gets stranded somewhere and it's told through her audio posts. If you donate to her funding accounts (I forget which ones), the donations are transferred into items that she buys to help keep herself alive. I really liked that part of the podcast! I definitely recommend this, but can’t really give an accurate summary because, as I said, I forget a lot of the things that happen.

EOS 10

There sure is an abundance of space podcasts. It’s pretty much its own genre at this point. Anyway this one follows Doctor Ryan Dalias and the rest of the crew of EOS 10, which is a space station. It’s currently in hiatus, but they’re starting work on season 3, which is exciting. A lot of people describe it as “Scrubs but in space” which I’m sure is accurate but I’ve never seen Scrubs so I wouldn’t know. Make sure to look up the content warnings, though because there was something that I didn’t expect in episode 4 and it didn’t bother me too much, but there might be other people for whom it does bother.

King Falls AM

This one’s another podcast told through radio broadcasts, but it’s set in this day and age. It’s a comedy that also delves into paranormal stuff (apparitions, the void, and more). It, like so many before it, starts off very lighthearted and quickly turns more serious. There’s still plenty o’ laughs, though. Featuring the world’s longest slowburn relationship (besides Blupjeans Adventure Zone of course). There’s quite a few LGBTQ+ characters, and more than quite a few emotions to be felt over the course of this podcast. It just went on hiatus, so now is the perfect time to catch up!

My Brother, My Brother, and Me

This one’s an advice podcast that was actually my first podcast, now that I think about it, but I stopped midway through the first episode because I wanted to listen to Wolf 359 instead. My goal is to finish all 400+ episodes by the end of the year, but that’s probably not going to happen. It’s an advice podcast where the McElroy brothers usually don’t give good advice, but there are a lot of good goofs to be had. A fair amount of what I say on a regular basis is actually a McElroy quote, but because none of my friends listen to this, (yet), I’m safe.

This one is just Griffin and Rachel McElroy  talking about things that they love! It’s a really great podcast to listen to when you aren’t feeling great, or if you just need some time to yourself. Not only is it a great podcast, but Griffin and Rachel love each other so much? Like you can hear it in their voices? And it’s just a really happy podcast? Honestly I’ve felt very emotional more than a few times just because this is such a lovely podcast and adsfhjlkldasfhgf

Shmanners

Travis McElroy and his wife Teresa teach us about the history of good etiquette, and how it applies to us in everyday situations! Are you out of episodes of Wonderful! to listen to? This one’s a pretty good second option, and you learn new things each week!

Sawbones

Justin and Sydnee McElroy talk about the history of medicine, and things that have gone wrong with it in the past. It’s really interesting to hear about these medical things because it’s an area that I know very little about, but probably should know more about, seeing that I should learn to take care of this flesh prison that I currently reside in.
