I ship tyzula in a ‘this story is azula-focused and action-filled with lots of tension and conflict and drama so it’s nice she’s got a pink gf on her side’ way, and I ship maizula in a ‘this story is focused entirely on these two fucked up girls who are fucked up in different ways who then try to be less fucked up as possible for each other’ way. I also ship mailee in a ‘let’s explore azula’s deep sense of abandonment and rejection and jealousy and let her work out how platonic love is the safest for her at the moment and make her be the centre of the trio where the rest of the trio is dating’ way.

idk if this is meant to be judgmental or anything but maizulee is the only dynamic in which i honestly truly ship mailee enough to discuss it LMAO don't get me wrong i understand why people ship it but i personally like mean wlw and people force them in the sunshine/grumpy trope too often so

maizulee (preferred above all)

tyzula (NOT when ty is just the sunshine girl and azula is evil. not that way)

maizula (NOT when mai hates everyone else ever except azula and acts as her defense lawyer. not like that)

mailee (quite frankly i'd be more open to discussing it or going into the tags if not for fandom)

I think I finally decided about if Maizulee has kids or not in my AU. They have one. A girl.

She's friendly like Ty Lee and cunning like Azula and stylish like Mai. She's bubbly and awkward and easily bored. She's never going to be Firelord.

I won't pretend that the Dangerous Ladies are the best moms ever. They're not. But they love their daughter very much, and so they fumble their way through this parenthood thing together.

Aside from Maizula, shat are your thoughts on Maizulee? Can be romantic or platonic, whatever you want.

oh i love maizulee. it's the only context in which i think tyzula works but i am a bit of a tyzula hater (mostly just cuz of fandom portrayals of it ignoring ty lee's personality and reducing her to just a bubbly sunshine-y girl).

as a friend group, i of course believe that they were genuinely friends as kids and things only started getting fucked up after ursa left and azula was only under ozai's "care," but even then i think what we see in the show is more the result of azula being in charge of them in a military context because they're... on a mission. like i think azula utilizing complete terror to control ty lee so she'll join the mission is not something she would do just like... if they were simply hanging out. i mean she's still an asshole, but azula when she's just hanging out with ty lee and mai like in the beach is an asshole in a very different way from azula hanging out with mai and ty lee while on a military mission.

i'm trying to think what i can say that won't give away too much of my plans for wasuremono? but also i think the history of memory is a great starting place if you want to see more of my thoughts on maizulee 'cause i fleshed out their childhood there pretty accurately to my current thoughts on them.

oh, i'll say this: this is maybe controversial, but i think maizulee would be the healthiest and happiest option of the possible ships in that trio. like i like maizula best of course and i get why mailee is popular (side note: i'd like mailee way more if the fans weren't like insane about azula, fans are very good at ruining things), but i think maizulee is a ship where you could see the girls being happier than they would be if it was just mailee or maizula and a lot healthier than if it was just maizula or tyzula. i won't get too into why that is because i think it's apparent enough from wasuremono as it is planned at least.

i'll do some better meta on them later, but i will say that maizulee is my second favorite atla ship, and i actually initially conceived of utterpok as having endgame maizulee. i'm coming back around on that idea a bit, but idk i haven't committed to changing what i'd have to for that.

This is once again an edge case, but the question isn’t like or dislike, it’s “do you ship it?” And for MaiLee, I have to say I

Why don’t you ship it?

Quite frankly, I got soured on it from a combination of MaiLee building itself on anti Azula narratives. I get why the appeal and why the Boiling Rock is a frequently used moment, but as an Azula fan I don’t care for that. (And I know not every MaiLee fan or narrative does that, but still.)

I actually kinda feel really bad because on the OT3 ship front, I love Maizulee. But unlike my other OT3s, where I also ship all three combinations of ships together, in this case I don’t ship MaiLee. And it’s not even that MaiLee is bad or anything.

What would have made you like it?

I think while the grumpy/cheerful dynamic is present and can be nice, I’d like it more if MaiLee dug into the complexities of the relationship between Mai and Ty Lee.

Also probably more importantly being able to like it on my own terms. Because I definitely think there’s things there to like. I don’t know, maybe I’ll read a fic that makes it click for me some day.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

This ship definitely has some great potential. And a lot of people talented people making wonderful art of them.

It would be funny how they just love Azula even though she's an idiot sometimes, and look how Mai and Ty Lee (Comics) are scared and hate her and shit and a half, while with Mai and Ty Lee (Live Action) they just say that she's a baby and she's fucking traumatized.

oh I’m pretty sure this is Not what you want anon I’m so sorry but. I’m assuming you want this as a ship and not just An Overall Dynamic and I.. don’t ship them. I think in canon the power dynamic is just far too uneven for it to be healthy or stable. and that’s not to be like “nobody should Ever write about a ship that’s not 100% Ideologically Pure” bc you can do a lot of interesting things with unstable relationships even if they’re not something to imitate, but I don’t have a great vibe on them even for that and. idk I’m rambling. postcanon could be a different story but I think in that regard I still see mailee as romantic and their relationship with azula as... defrosting?

I do think, with a lot of conditionals about azula first being able to stabilize and then making a conscious effort to be better as a person, there’s a chance at them being friends again. maybe not Best Friends, but I think when it becomes clear that she’s trying and isn’t the same person she used to be, they’re willing to support her. I think mai and ty lee having the authority to set boundaries is really good for the overall dynamic yknow? from there, someone rly willing to pick apart their histories and give it time could maybe make it romantic

so maybe I’m not that person but!! I do like the idea of mai and ty lee introducing azula to her eventual girlfriend. she’s a friend of ty lee’s, and she’s plenty nice but also clever as hell, with a sense of humor that even mai actually finds funny. azula never has to try to fake-laugh at her jokes like she tried to for the boys at the beach. and she knows who azula used to be, but she also knows who she is now, and that’s what matters to her. they go on double dates and they all hang out and I think eventually they can reach a rly good balance

I want to share more ATLA fanfics with y'all.

I'm already working on getting as many, if not all, the fics where Zuko is raised either by members of the White Lotus or where they live (which is the most accurate for Pakku, seeing as Zuko being raised in the NWT, as far as I have seen, has been done by Iroh or the Chief, Pakku is there usually as a teacher or in one case, a babysitter, but I'm still counting it as a kinda default).

If there are other type of fanfics you'd like to see, let me know.

But, just letting you know, I don't ship Zutara, so I haven't actually read any fics with that pairing. There is a chance I have, or I may have read one with hints of it. So, I'm not the best person to go to for that ship, I'm sorry.

I mostly read Zukka, SuZuka/Zukki, Maiko, Jinko, Kataang, Jetko, SokJetko, Mailee, Tyzula, Maizula, Maizulee, and on occasion, Bakoda.
