Zombies Run Secret Santa Update

Hello friends, comrades, and other fandom folks!

I usually keep my private life off this platform, but I don't want to leave this behind without closure. I'm not running the ZR Secret Santa this year, and it's not exactly by choice.

Earlier this year, I was arrested in Georgia for distributing flyers related to the Stop Cop City movement and the killing of environmental activist Tortuguita. I was charged with felony intimidation and held without bail for weeks. Then, I was hit with a RICO indictment, which sweeps all forms of protest, from distributing flyers to minor acts of civil disobedience, under Georgia’s anti-racketeering law.

I was forced back to jail on the RICO charges, reliving the trauma of my unlawful imprisonment. Now that I'm out, it's time to prepare for a trial. With all of my charges combined, I'm facing more than 50 years in prison — all for flyering.

To learn more about my situation, as well as the charges myself and my 60 co-defendants are facing, here are a few resources:

I started this blog almost nine years ago. Being involved in fandom shaped my early adulthood, and I will never forget that. I might not be a ZR obsessed teenager anymore, but I still have so much love for the space and community we built.

With everything going on, I'm taking a step back from organizing the Secret Santa. I'll try my best to participate, but I can't make any promises. It's going to be a long and exhausting legal battle, which will likely play out over the next 2-3 years.

I may or may not delete this account, but either way, there's a good chance I won't be back. My world has been completely overturned, and nothing will ever be the same. It might be time to leave my old life behind.

Whatever happens, know that I love you all. Even the mutuals who haven't posted about ZR in years — I appreciate you and I'll miss you. My lovely friends are taking over the Secret Santa and I hope more people will step up to keep this tradition going.

I hope that one day this world becomes kinder and more forgiving. Until then, all I can do is try to fight for our future.

its the joycons. goddesses help me i knew exactly what would happen and now we're here, right outside the fire temple and im already annoyed at the things

i have to reset the gyro *constantly*, especially in the middle of fighting which is a big issue

my muscle memory is somehow still locked on the wiimote and nunchuk, im hitting the wrong buttons which wouldnt be an issue except when it is

a and b being mapped to the joycon a and b is my biggest issue. i keep my right thumb on b bc i make the dialogue fast so i dont use a as often. i press zr all the time expecting it to be b and i press b instead of a which messes me up a lot bc im not used to my thumb being responsible for two buttons

the weight is also just wrong still, theyre too small and light and i dont like having another wrist strap

i switch to skord for a break from totk and it only feels like half of one because im still holding joycons, it feels almost exactly the same except im physically swinging the sword this time

quality of life upgrade of the bug/treasures not being introduced with every session is nice, along with the independent camera

i dont think fi can tell me my playtime anymore which sucks

I remember years ago you posted your Dolphin control profiles for Secret Rings (and maybe Black Knight?) but Tumblr's search function is awful and I cannot find them anymore, so I was wondering if you still had them on you?

Not so sure I ever did Black Knight (though maybe I did), but I did do this for Secret Rings, because I used them with this video:

It's possible I did Black Knight, because I intended on doing a follow-up to this video with Black Knight at 4K60 and never got around to it.

But, bare minimum, good news! I link an imgur album with the Secret Rings control setup images in the description for the above video.

Dolphin's control configuration menu looks a lot different these days but it's probably not impossible to translate things across. Looking in Dolphin now, I haven't updated my controls for the new menu, so they're exactly like they appear here still, just in the new interface.

That being said, I do seem to have settings for Black Knight in here, and I used them as recently as the Sonic Frontiers video review, because I captured Black Knight footage for that. So here are those:

I realize these aren't all the available tabs, but the ones I skipped have been left blank. It also looks like some of these buttons are bound to Dualshock 4 buttons and some are bound to Xbox buttons, which is probably a hold over of Black Knight's profile being built from Secret Rings (or some other game, I guess).

It's a bit of a mess! But it's all I have for you, sorry.

Edit: To help out a bit...

The Hat: This is the D-pad.

Button 1 is Square, 2 is Cross, 3 is Circle, 4 is Triangle.

Button 5 is L1, Button 6 is R1.

Button 9 is Capture, Button 10 is Options.

Button 8 seems to light up if I pull the R trigger? That doesn't seem right, but maybe it is.

"Full Axis Xr" and "Full Axis Yr" are the triggers. X seems to be left, Y seems to be right.

"Right Y+" seems to be a leftover from the Xbox controller and isn't used for Black Knight.

Instead, "Axis Z" seems to be the right stick. Zr for up and down, Z for left and right, I guess?

The rest are Xbox holdovers and don't matter in Black Knight.

I dreamed that Nintendo released a version of Splatoon 1 on the 3DS. It was like a Smash 4 3DS and Wii U situation. The models were super low poly and had crusty textures. It tried to play exactly like the Wii U version but because of the 3DS layout it was so weird. It was one of those bizarre New 3DS exclusives because it used more memory and required use of ZL/ZR plus that weird extra joystick. The touch screen was basically the Wii U gamepad equivalent. I don't remember it having story mode, it just kind of jumped right into the action. Like just giving you the tutorial and telling you to go play online. It felt so real that I legit looked up if there was a 3DS port of Splatoon 1 when I woke up XD

Decided to make a part two for my final splatfest concept post! Here are the outcomes for each team winning the final fest:

Team Past - The next game's aesthetic is more Y2K oriented, with a bunch of Y2K clothes being added into the game alongside past pieces of gear added to the series. The music in the next game would be more pop and rock centered (oh what I'd do to see a Splatoon parody of The Killers lmao) (I mean dedf1sh's stage name does serve as a reference to deadmau5 so if that can happen maybe this can too). The idols would have pop-rock music since that type of music was popular in the 2000s. New weapons would include yoyo type weapons (normal yoyos function similarly to brushes however if you hold ZR and aim the yoyo at an enemy you can stun them and get a kill) and roller blade/skate wheel things that will attatch to your character's shoes (hold ZR to create a trail of ink and tap ZR when close to an enemy to kick them until they're splatted).

Team Present - The next game's aesthetic would have hints of the vaporwave aesthetic mixed in with a few other aesthetics and the game would add stuff that e-boys/girls would probably wear (note: I legit don't know what else they could probably do for new gear theming if this scenario's team present won so I'm going with this) alongside older gear types from past games. The music would be mostly pop-centric and the idols would have techno music or something like that. New weapons would include the bubblegummer (a type of gun that shoots sticky ink projectiles that create lumps in your teams ink for a short amount of time that could slowly imobilize them until the lump fades away) and gauntlets (tap ZR to punch; after two punches you can unleash a stronger punch and then go back to normal punches).

Team Future - The next game has a synthwave/future punk aesthetic. New clothes added to the game would either include a lot of black, white, or silver with other colors also being used or will have a lot of color to it. More clothes will have the ability to light up & most new clothes will appear to be futuristic. The music of the game will incorperate synth, industrial, glitch hop, breakcore, fusion, and chiptune music. The idols would have upbeat synth pop music. New weapons could include arm canons (taking some inspiration from my own oc, Hope for this since her prosthetic arm functions similarly to my concept for this weapon) (tap ZR to launch a projectile, hold ZR down to create a larger one) (this weapon will also have the ability to dodge roll, but only one time until you get out of that dodge roll's position) and mallots (works similarly to ultra stamp but not exactly) (use ZR to slam the ground and launch a projectile and hold ZR to unleash an attack that can stun enemies for an easy kill).

Considering that the next game is part of a new story arc, the story mode for each game will remain roughly the same but with different aesthetics. Naturally, I hope that we'll have more hairstyles for our characters (especially for the octolings) and more customization options as well.

Have you noticed any trends/patterns in what makes you 'fannish' about something? (Particular mediums, character dynamics, aesthetics etc.) Also, is there anything you love but don't feel the impulse to engage in fandom with?

This was a really interesting question, and I had to sit and think about it for a while before feeling like I had some good conclusions to share with you, Anon! I think in general there's three things that have to be in the mix that get me feeling 'fannish'/involved in the fandom for something: 1) Regularly engaging with the source material 2) A good community 3) Space to play

I'll put the rest under a cut because I'm sure I'm about to ramble for a while

So, with regards to point one, it feels relevant to mention that I don't particular feel like I've been a member of too many fandoms. I'd say two, exactly -- Zombies, Run! and The Wayhaven Chronicles. I've dabbled with things like The Locked Tomb Series and Dragon Age of course, but I never necessarily felt like part of the fandom, just because it was so large and multifacted, and I only briefly engaged with it as someone who contributed to those respective fandoms. But with ZR and TWC, they're both things that have stuck around longer, mostly because I've continued to play them for a very long time. I got started with ZR about 10 years ago. When I was my most active with it was when I was going out literally every day and listening to missions, which helped keep the story and characters really fresh in my mind. It also helped me constantly think up new themes and ideas I really wanted to explore within the setting and with the characters. Similar with Wayhaven -- I played through all the books when Book 3 came out in April and I've more or less had a play-through going since then. My actual play-throughs have fallen a little on the wayside just because of life things but I'm still thinking about it & engaging with the source material a lot. So I guess my point is, to truly feel 'fannish' about something I need to be a little bit obsessed, lol!

As for my second point, I've truly felt my most 'fannish'/part of the fandom when I find a good community to interact with. One of my favorite parts of being a fan is actually getting to talk about the material in question -- play with it, theorize, etc. The Zombies, Run! Fandom when I joined was amazing for that, and there continued being a really good group constantly discussing meta on their Rofflenet website the entire time I was a player. There was even a weekly zoom book club to discuss the current releasing missions! It was awesome! And with Wayhaven I feel like I've found a really nice circle of mutuals to sit and talk about the books with (and also obviously, my dearest Delucadarling, who I constantly talk about it with). Which brings me to my last point, is I really like having a lot of space to 'play' and feel fannish. With ZR, it has a huge sprawling universe of a zombie apocalypse, and only a very small portion is shown to the players via the audio. It leaves a lot of room to imagine what happens around the missions. And with Wayhaven, since only a portion of the story is out, it leaves a lot of room to imagine with happens next to all the characters. That is the sort of thing I really find motivating! And there's for sure plenty of things I love that I don't really engage with the fandom for, or engage pretty lightly. For example, I've really been loving Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, but I haven't really done more than chat with a few friends about it. Similarly for a lot of the books I read -- I'll talk about them with a friend or two but not really seek out a lot of online content for them. I also watch a lot of cooking competitions, lol, so that's different for me to. If you've stuck with me for this long thank you! I really appreciated the question and I hope you have a great day <3

Nice framing. It looks as if the carpet ZR is sitting on is a box, and the door is separating his world from ZY's. But the door's open, so ZY can step right in, he's just standing at the threshold deciding what he'll do, he's not in yet. It's his choice to enter. He stands, till ZR offers him a compromise to show that he's sorry, and then he (ZY) steps right into ZR's world. The decision was his. But he doesn't stay in ZR's carpet, ZR has to step out of that box to follow him.

ZY isn't taking any shits. He isn't allowing ZR to take all the power in this (not romantic, yet) relationship, he isn't allowing any positive reinforcements, 'rewards', following an action that breaks his boundaries. He knows what he's worth and what ZR owes him, despite the knife Zr's holding over his head. This is a sign that he won't tolerate any abusive behaviour from now (hopefully?). It's nice to see a character nip a cycle of abuse at the bud ah! He deserves all the applause cause honestly, the situation isn't exactly on his side but he stood up for himself and for others in the future, too.

Yeah, ZR reflect on your behaviour. A bad childhood isn't an excuse for abusive, harassing behaviour as a grown up.

🦈In general, I had never followed Shabbat rules before, exactly until 2023. Since this winter, I began to try to do what all Jews consider mandatory to commit, but to be honest, I did not succeed too much in it. My active character and active body could not accept the fact that you just need to turn off for a day and devote yourself to blissful doing nothing. In the end, I found a compromise - I began to devote Saturday to reading paper books. This simple thing, just one day a week to read paper books, turned out to be incredibly effective for me. The first book read on the Shabbat was a manual for forensic investigators of Gross, which strengthened my confidence in the correctness of the hypotheses made. One of the sections of the manual was devoted to the methods used by criminals to avoid punishment or escape from the investigation. Zombies Run ZRS3M31 Scream and Shout

I couldn't run outdoors today because of the rain so I did it in the parking garage of my workplace. Not the most ideal of places, but the gloomy and creepy atmosphere was certainly appropriate to this particular ZR mission. I never know if I'm running the right distance indoors, though. Garmin can be quite tricky about that.

I am so curious about these darn blue/violet flowers and why they are so important to Comansys. The man who jumped off the ship, was he being experimented on with those flowers? Hi, I played a really bad video game that's not interesting to anyone so here's a post about it. The game in question is a mobile game called Truck Simulator - Something overly long SEO bullshit & Car 2022 (The last part isn't a joke; The game just randomly has car 2022 in the title despite there not being cars in the game). I played the Switch version, on sale for 2 USD, down from the 10 USD asking price. I will be calling the game Faux-Sim from now on. Faux-Sim is a rip-off of European Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator, two PC games about trucking (go figure). ETS2 and ATS are very popular truck sims and they're the obvious rip-off here. If anyone goes looking for these two games and doesn't put in their region for whatever reason, these SEO trap "games" are here to steal their money. It's clearly predatory and also provides funny results. Video below if you want to see some real nonsense. So, what's the dirt? The game doesn't function. There's supposedly a break tied to controllers except there isn't. Buttons besides ZR and up/down d-pad didn't work. The B button randomly took me to the menu exactly once, it never worked before or after that. Faux-Sim doesn't work outside of handheld mode. You have to use the on-screen buttons because nothing is mapped beyond the buttons mentioned above. You cannot break if you're not using the touch screen but there doesn't seem to be any ability to just use touch screen only for the Switch version. The acceleration goes from 0 to 100 in three seconds, even short turns are impossible and result in collisions. The camera systems are blatant copies of ETS2's cameras, but they're noticeably worse in every regard. The only way to really see this problem is to watch footage. Once again, you cannot break. All of these problems lead to incredibly funny results.
