Been getting back into animal jam this week and did a study!

Live-action ATLA fundamentally misunderstands Azula. The whole point and flavor of Azula’s perfectionism is that, for a long time, she IS perfect. She is the favorite one, and she can do no wrong. That’s what makes her confidence frightening and seemingly impenetrable until the very end of the show: she knows the price of even a hint of failure, and she avoids it at all costs.

Her insecurity in the live action show is painfully obvious, to the detriment of the character. She and Zuko seem of a kind, rather than seeming like opposite ends of a spectrum. They’ve tried to make her more palatable—to make her desperation more plain— and in doing so they’ve sanded off her edges. They’ve eroded the way her externalizations hurt her friends. They’ve taken away her cruelty and manipulativeness.
