Above is a local newspaper article / advert for a live version of the Muppet Show, which ran in late 1986 at the now-demolished Wembley Conference Centre in London. Whether the venue was chosen due to the way its name reminded people of Fraggle Rock is unknown. (/s)

Anyway, I attended this on one of the dates listed - I have a feeling it might have been before Christmas. My dad only took me along - my younger sister was still too young at the time to attend. We went as part of a special booked party for the employees (and employee's children) of Rank Xerox, which was based in Uxbridge in North London.

That's a photo of the front of Wembley Conference Centre there, taken at an unknown date. (I took it from Wikipedia.) I have a memory of all of us (employees and other kids) gathering in the car park in the sodium-lit winter evening dusk before we went in.

I remember there was a party beforehand held for us Rank Xerox people in one of the smaller conference rooms, and one of the pre-show "entertainments" laid on for us was a clown. I did not like the clown, but not because of the usual obvious reason. I've always viewed clowns more as tiresome nuisances rather than Brothers Of Pennywise.

Rather, I didn't like him because this clown's makeup reminded me too much of a clown I saw in an episode of The Avengers - not the Marvel Comics one, but this entirely different thing from 60s / 70s UK TV that everyone's forgotten - where both that clown and everyone else at a party died of bizarro germ warfare due to some James Bond-esque megalomaniac or something. I was faintly concerned that I was going to die of every disease ever, like in that episode, but there was a child-friendly buffet available so I quickly pushed it out of my mind. Incidentally, in that Avengers episode I think the scene afterwards went something like:

STEED: So, Doctor, what did the guests die of? SCIENTIST: Everything. STEED: What? That's impossible! How could they have died of everything? SCIENTIST: They died of measles, the common cold, typhoid, malaria, smallpox... and every other disease known to man. As I said, everything.

...Yes, us 80s kids really did see some mad shit on TV, even if it was from the 60s.

During this party we got to have our photos taken with one of the Muppets. As you might have figured out from the top picture, these were full sized costumes worn by actors. They sort of mimed to specially pre-recorded dialogue from Jim Henson, Frank Oz, etc, while on stage. The one Muppet who didn't have to talk was this janitor character who I can't remember the name of, and I assume that was the Muppet they chose for the photo op, as so not to break the illusion. For years we had a big framed picture of a grinning young me sat on the lap of this giant Muppet, next to my school photos. It's since vanished and I have no idea where it's gone. Maybe Oscar The Grouch nicked it.

As part of the merch we picked up at the show, my Dad bought me one of these things, which I think were relatively new at the time. I also got a felt flag thing of Kermit.

...And that's what Auntie Michelle did in London, about 36 years ago.

Tributes after tragic death of business leader Geoff Selig

Geoff Selig, a prominent Sydney businessman and a former NSW Liberal Party president, is being remembered for his LGBTQIA+ advocacy after his tragic death while on a European holiday.

The gay businessman was the executive chairman of leading printing and communications firm IVE Group. IVE prints some of Australia’s biggest magazine titles.

IVE group confirmed Geoff had died at age 59 while on holiday after “unforeseen complications arising from an accident in Barcelona”.

“Geoff played a major role, over 40 years, in establishing IVE as Australia’s leading marketing and communications business, in the process, reshaping the landscape of the Australian printing industry,” IVE’s board said.

Geoff Selig was previously president of the Liberal Party’s NSW branch between 2005 and 2008.

Writing on Twitter X, Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich said he was very sad to hear of the tragic passing of the businessman and political figure.

“Geoff was a leader in the Sydney business community and an extremely generous supporter of many causes.

“[He] assisted the marriage equality campaign more than people will ever know. [Geoff was] a loving family man and caring friend to so many.”

‘Influential and inspirational leader’

Also writing on X, New South Wales Liberal MP Jacqui Munro said, “During my time as co-Chair of NSW Liberal Pride, Geoff was a consistent and active supporter of the Liberal LGBTQI+ community.

“He is recognised as a giant of the Party, leading as President from 2005 to 2008.

“His loss will be felt deeply. Condolences to the Selig family and all who knew him.”

Visual Media Association CEO Kellie Northwood said many in the printing industry are also mourning Geoff after the “deeply saddening” news of his death.

“Geoff was an influential and inspirational leader, one I had great privilege in working with across industry projects over the years, and who was truly passionate about our industry,” she said.

“The VMA Board, members and industry share our sincere condolences and thoughts to Geoff’s family, and to the entire IVE Group during this difficult chapter.”

To all my fellow Anne With An E fans

I think a good way to get another season of AWAE would be to follow Veronica Mars' model. In 2014, The creator of VM set up a GoFundMe page with the proposition that they would make a movie if they got a certain amount of money.... it was a hugely successful campaign.

I would personally be willing to give to something like that, if CBC and Northwood Entertainment were to set one up and guarantee us a new season with or without Netflix.

My idea is that we should all flood CBC and Northwood Entertainment's twitter with that proposition. Also using the usual hashtags. Not only would that be a good way to get another season, but it would also help the hashtags trend again. I've already tweeted about it, but they may take the idea more seriously if 1000s of us tweet about it.

And who knows CBC may be so touched by the overwhelming offer that they may renew without setting up a GoFundMe. :)

There’s like a lot to unpack here and I don’t know where to start.

I guess

1) Sullivan Entertainment was the company that produced the made for tv Anne of Green Gables movies in the 1980s as well as a bunch of spinoff stuff

2) The 1980s coined Anne calling Gilbert “Gil” it never happens in any of the 9 books (here is a post where i break that down)

3) Sullivan Entertainment is the worst and they try to own everything Anne of Green Gables and milk it for cash even it is literally LMM’s creation not theres. There have been several Sullivan Lawsuits. Here’s an article detailing some of the legal battles between Sullivan and the LMM heirs because they correctly claimed he was witholding royalties from them and he tried to sue them for defamation. Even the judges in the court cases are like why is he so shady???

4) The Sullivan Lawsuit that I was referring to though was the one where he sued Northwood Entertainment the producers of Anne With An E for copyright infringement. If you google it there’s a couple articles about it written back when the case was first brought to court in 2019. Here’s one that outlines some of the things brought to court. Basically anything that was remotely related to the 80s movie that didn’t happen directly in the books was being labeled as copyright infringement. Many of the legal articles written about this case are kind of like idk what’s gonna happen because there’s not really precedent for suing over scenes and general concepts like this.

5) I couldn’t find any articles on what the actual outcomes of the case were and I am not a legal expert or anything, BUT on twitter back in January (i think it was January, winter time for sure of 2020) it was being spread around that one outcome of the case was that the quote “It’s not what the world hold for you, it’s what you bring to it” had to be dubbed over and changed. This is literally something that you can go back and watch season 2 episode 10 and notice that the dialogue has changed in that scene between Anne and Cole.

6) This is because that is a direct quote from the 80s movies and does not exist in any of the Anne of Green Gables books. Whether it was accidental or intentional it was plagiarism and it had to be changed. (I’ve made a post about this too before)

7) All that being said, IF the AWAE writers were given the chance to write more seasons given everything they’ve been through with the lawsuit I can not imagine they would want to approach anything even remotely close to anything that happened in the Sullivan films, for fear of another lawsuit.

8) So no “Gil” because there’s no book basis for it.

Tldr: Gil was created for the 80s movies and the creator of them is sue happy

anne with an e getting cancelled before anne ever gets to call gilbert “gil” is the biggest hatecrime netflix has committed
