I have drawn some cute bat stickers based on the winner of a poll I held on Twitter! These little batties will be up for sale on my Etsy very soon. They're all based on some of my favorite bat species. I have many favorite bat species, and I'll likely be drawing more batties as stickers at some point. For now, though, we have the Californian Myotis Bat, The Honduran White Bat, The Northern Ghost Bat, The Pallid Bat, And finally the Townsend's Big-Eared Bat! If you would like to help protect these batties that all face habitat loss and stress to their population from humans, I would recommend checking out Bat Conservation International. You can donate to them or learn how you can help bats in your very own backyard! https://www.batcon.org/

DPxDC Fae!Danny But Make It Fantasy
I've already made a whole Changeling AU with fae!Danny, but guess what, I have decided not to achieve any level of chill with fae ideas.
We all know Danny is Ghost Kind. Now, what if he is a Fae Prince? A Prince of Winter, to be exact. Imagine all the ice castles (Elsa, I'm looking at you), the snowy lands, northern lights in his crown, a cape made of tiny ornate snowflakes. Crystalline ice swords, skin so white he doesn't even look alive, eyes clear and blue like a frozen lake. Formal gowns, ballrooms, duels and carriages pulled by horses made of snowstorms.
He used to be a changeling, put in place of Dan. Grew up in a village with his parents being witch hunters, or maybe just hunters in general. Meanwhile Dan, a human child whose place he took, grew up in a fae realm, surrounded by magic creatures and miracles.
But Danny couldn't hide he was a fae his whole life. He used to look human when he was a baby, but as the time went by, he started to look more and more fae-like. Jazz was the first to notice it, of course, but this was Danny, a child she practically raised, so she dealt with it. Their parents, though, did not.
Sam and Tucker are in the know, for sure. Sam used this opportunity to learn witchcraft - who is better to learn from than an actual fae? Tucker is a blacksmith, as is his family. The first thing he asked Danny when he discovered he is a fae, was "how in the seven kingdoms are you a fae, and you decided a blacksmith is your best friend?" because, honestly, not even Fentons have so much iron around them as Tucker does.
Now, you may be thinking of where the DC part comes in here.
Well, the Waynes are actually the royal family. Bruce is the King of Gotham, and his children are princes, princesses, and heirs. They are also protecting the country not only by the word of the law, but also from the other, more shady side. I think they should go by Shadows, not Bats, though, since I doubt a name like 'Batman' would fly in the fantasy world.
Constantine is a mage, the strongest one alive, and yet he couldn't care less for his uniqueness if he tried for a week. Diana is the Queen of Themyskira, of course. I think Krypton should be its own country or a continent, ruled by the family of El. Although Jon is the first heir to a throne, due to Kon being, well, a bastard in terms of medieval customs.
After Danny's race is found out by his parents, he leaves for the fae realm, and he offers his friends and his sister to join him. Tucker refuses, Sam and Jazz take him up on that, but Sam leaves shortly after - she mostly used it to get away from her overbearing parents. She is now a witch who lives in the woods all alone, and no one can find her. She keeps contact with Danny, though. Jazz is traveling both the fae and the human realms, just having fun with it.
Jason is part-fae. After he died, a cult has abducted his body - the cult leader being Ra's, of course - and used it for an experiment. They used some fae magic to bring him back, or, maybe, they have tried to merge a fae and a human, creating a chimera. This was the first option of Ra's trying to get closer to Bruce in order to take power. It was not a very successful option since both Jason and whatever was left of the fae inside him decided not to obey the madman.
Damian was... slightly more successful. He was not merged with anything, but his development was magically enhanced.
And now, while Danny is back in the fae realm and he is a crowned Prince of Winter, Clockwork has a problem. He knows humans are afraid of fae, but this is not a very productive way to go. And there is a timeline somewhere there that can fix it.
Of course, Danny is right in the middle of that timeline. Now, Clockwork just needs to find a way to help Danny make an alliance with humans.

Cards character design
I would like to start this by apologising for my lack of activity recently, unfortunately work became a disaster and a minor concussion has turned thus far into a major chronic problem, so writing has been difficult to say the least, but hopefully this little exercise will help, even if just helping me feel better about my cognition.
When it comes to species, given how other Curators/Masters are based on bats, I wanted to grab a unique species to use instead of just the typical go to bats. Due to her connection to Candles (and my personal headcanon of him being based on the Honduran White Bat), I knew I wanted to go with a white or albino bat. Given the fact that only approximately six species display this colouration, and given only two of those species had pictures I could use, I had limited options.
It is ironic that the species I chose was the Northern Ghost Bat, if you know the lore of Seeking Mr Eaten's Name. It fits with her story, however, because she truly found herself up North.
It is a bit of a debate in the community if Curators/Masters have horns, I personally am in the camp that says yet, but I do have alternate designs of her with or without horns. When she does have horns, she has curled horns, similar to sheep. Given her metaphorical nature as a sacrificial lamb for a large portion of her story it only felt right to include a nod to that in her transitioned form so to say.
Though if I am being honest the more accurate reason for her horns is that I love the design of Kulve Taroth from Monster Hunter World and the Sacrificial Lamb just happened to work retroactively.
I would talk more about her robes, but I do not have an accurate illustration to point to for it yet, but I am planning on getting that done soon. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, I do love talking about stuff like this. c:

idk what flavor of vampires you're playing with here, but does your vamp alex turn into a bat at all? very important
he most definitely does. its one of my favorite parts of vampirism. in my mind, alex takes a form similar to the grey long eared bat, a native species of alabama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
however, if i went a less realistic approach, then i'd make him one of those cool white bats, like the honduran white bat (left) or the northern ghost bat (right)

The worst thing about researching reference is all the very very bad AI generated images. That's not what a honduran white bat looks like, that's a rat with a northern ghost bat's face pasted on. Ugh.

Bats: Fascination, Biology, and Myths
A few days ago, I was casually watching a video by PricklyAlpaca, unaware that it would inspire the creation of this new article. I had a few ideas floating around—ranging from frogs to moths and even unicorns—but it was the bat that ultimately caught my attention thanks to that video.
🦇
It was both captivating to watch and pleasant to listen to in the background, and in the end, it convinced me that bats could make for an intriguing subject for a small article. But what makes bats so special?

A Biologically Unique Creature
From a biological standpoint, bats stand out due to a few unique characteristics. First and foremost, they are the only mammals capable of active flight—that is, the ability to fly by flapping their wings, unlike gliding mammals such as flying squirrels. Additionally, there are about 1,400 species of bats worldwide, making them one of the most diverse groups of mammals after rodents.
These 1,400 species can be divided into two main groups:
Microchiroptera: These smaller bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt insects, although some also feed on fruit or small animals.
Megachiroptera: These larger fruit-eating bats, like flying foxes, primarily consume fruits and nectar and are mostly found in tropical and subtropical regions.
The Vampire Bat: Myth or Reality?
When it comes to bats, one of the most common associations is their connection to vampirism, largely popularized by works like Dracula by Bram Stoker. But what’s the truth behind this? Out of the 1,400 bat species, only three are hematophagous, meaning they feed on blood.
The most well-known is the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), a small brown bat measuring 7 to 9 centimeters.
The white-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi), similar in appearance to the common vampire bat, occasionally feeds on livestock blood.
Lastly, the hairy-legged vampire bat (Diphylla ecaudata), which typically feeds on bird blood, was observed in a 2016 study in Brazil to have started feeding on human blood due to habitat destruction(Wikipedia).
These bats don’t drink blood in the traditional sense. They make a small cut in their prey’s skin, usually at night, and lick the blood that flows from the wound. Their saliva contains an anticoagulant, preventing the blood from clotting.
Giant and Terrifying Bats
While the idea of vampire bats may be frightening, other species are impressive due to their size or unique appearance. For instance, the giant golden-crowned flying fox of the Philippines is the largest bat species, with a wingspan reaching up to 1.7 meters. Despite its imposing size, it’s harmless and exclusively feeds on fruit, sporting a dog-like snout that gives it a rather adorable appearance.
On the other hand, species like the spectral bat, the largest carnivorous bat in Central America, with a wingspan of up to 1 meter, may appear more intimidating. However, they pose no threat to humans.

Among the most endearing species is the white bat of Honduras (Ectophylla alba), a true gem. This tiny bat, with its white fur and bright yellow ears, looks like a cotton ball. In groups, they build tent-like shelters from leaves and live together in these small refuges. Their fragility makes them a vulnerable species, threatened by deforestation and habitat loss.

Camazotz: The Divine Bat in Maya Mythology
Let me take you on a journey into the mythological world of the Maya, where the bat takes on a divine and terrifying form.
In the depths of a sacred cave, dark and silent, the murmur of the dead echoes through the shadows. The bat god, Camazotz, waits patiently. Depicted with a grotesque face and outstretched wings, Camazotz embodies the night, death, and sacrifice. Every night, wandering souls who dare to enter his domain face certain death. He is the guardian of the entrance to Xibalba, the underworld. Camazotz is not just a creature; he is a destructive force, decapitating the heroes who dare challenge his power. The sacred Maya text, the Popol Vuh, recounts his encounter with the hero twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque. One of the brothers loses his life, decapitated by the bat god during their journey through the underworld. But Camazotz doesn’t only represent death—he is also a symbol of regeneration, a gateway between the worlds of the living and the dead.
Bats and Fortune in China
In contrast to the dark myths of Mesoamerica, bats occupy a positive place in Chinese culture. In China, the word for "bat," fú (蝠), is a homophone for "happiness" or "good fortune." They are often depicted in art and architecture as symbols of longevity and prosperity. In this context, bats are not seen as frightening creatures but rather as bringers of happiness and prosperity to those who encounter them.
Bats and Rabies: A Reality to Consider
Lastly, an important note concerns rabies, a disease that bats can transmit through bites. While transmission to humans is rare, it’s advised never to handle a bat without proper precautions. In the case of a bite, it’s crucial to wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately for a rabies prophylaxis(
Animal Diversity Web).

Conclusion
From fluffy little creatures like the white bat of Honduras to legendary figures like Camazotz, bats are animals that are both fascinating and mysterious. Their roles in mythology, biology, and even public health show that they are much more than the creatures of the night we often imagine. Perhaps the next time you see a bat fly through the twilight sky, you’ll view it not as a threat, but as a creature full of ancient mysteries and untold stories.

A grown ass adult but still smol and tiny, you could literally fit in my shirt pocket sksjsjsksksj, you're not even as tall as my finger LMAOOOOO, but I am sorry for teasing I mean it. Anyways, what kind of bat are you anyway? Are you one of those marshmallow bats that all cuddle together on or under a giant leaf?
FUCK I COMPLETELY MISSED THIS ASK FROM MARCH whoopsie. Bat lore below!
I didn't have a specific bat species in mind when I drew the first bat in 2020; I just wanted to make a tired lil guy to express my stress as I was suffering from a month of insomnia while being forced to work publicly during the pandemic. I originally named them "Insomnia bat" akin to Anxiety Fox by Naomi Romero because if personifying your illnesses as cute animals ain't the best coping mechanism, idk what is!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bat got a lot more marshmallow-shaped over time but those dark circles haven't changed (and neither have mine 💀).
That said, I do adore Honduran white bats and I also love species with giant ears like desert long-eared bats. And of course a shoutout to the Northern ghost bat for being The Grumpiest Little Guys™ ❤️ You can see the family resemblance, no?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll throw some extra trivia in bc I'm bored too.
The bat does not have a name. I tried making a name up and that didn't feel right. It's just the bat lol.
If I had a dollar for every time someone's asked for bat pin/charms/buttons/plushies, I'd have enough money to make merch.
I sewed a bat onesie and it is the best thing I've ever sewn.
The bat is me but I am not the bat. This is a silly little character I wear to be funny and work out my own emotions.
As such, there's no gender involved here. Bat pronouns are they/it.
I'll make silly lightly sexual-natured jokes (bat stuck in boobs teehee) but I get really uncomfortable when people make outright sexual comments. This ain't a fursona.
Lemme repeat that
THIS IS NOT A FURSONA.
"Persona of an anthropomorphized animal" sir that is a crunchy cotton ball with rhombus ears. I will fight you on this.

-Wrinkle-faced bat (Centurio senex) -Visored bat (Sphaeronycteris toxophyllum) -Mediterranean horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus euryale) -Lesser Bulldog bat (Noctilio albiventris) -Florida Bonneted bat (Eumops floridanus) -Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) -Ghost-faced bat (Mormoops megalophylla) -Hammer-headed bat (Hypsignathus monstrosus) -Eastern Tube-nosed bat (Nyctimene robinsoni) -Common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) -Brown Long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus) (or possibly another member of Plecotus) -Black flying fox (Pteropus alecto) -Ghost Bat (Macroderma gigas) -Hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) -Pied Butterfly Bat (Glauconycteris superba) -Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat (Epomophorus wahlbergi) -Honduran white bat (Ectophylla alba) -Northern ghost bat (Diclidurus albus) -Northern Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis) -Kitti's hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai) juvenile -Greater long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis)
I'm pretty confident on all of these except the Northern Myotis because they pretty much All Look Like That.
Tumblr media
I’ve decided that all bats fall somewhere on this horrid little graph I’ve devised. Here are some prime examples of the various Creature Varieties found in nature.
