Last deserve2preserve of the 2019, and the decade even, and I have to go out in style. Here's hoping the new year (and decade) brings much sunshine (literally and figuratively) to homes like this Trumbull Avenue Victorian. Happy New Year, y'all! 🎉🎊 #Detroit #Westside #NorthCorktown #CorktownDetroit #Italianate #VictorianArchitecture #TrumbullAvenue #TrumbullAve #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces #HappyNewYear #HappyNewDecade (at North Corktown, Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6wYqGXF9BP/?igshid=3m3uny7p1ntu

Natural observations
Thanks to the steady, plaintive, in-heat-induced mewing of the cat* I was up early this morning.
Girded with a cup of coffee I ventured into the rear garden where the day was in full swing. Gratifyingly, like a dog, the cat followed me (any feline canine behavior will be strongly encouraged).
I eased into a lawn chair and the cat cautiously took her place atop the felled tree, aka ‘giant cat scratcher.’
Being atop the food chain I naturally keep an eye out for swooping falcons and snooping dogs, ready to fling my mug of coffee aside and leap to her defense at any moment. Can I react faster than a taloned bird of prey? Can I bear the force of a rabid dog’s fangs as I heroically shepherd the cat to the safety of indoors? As I’m pondering these things (and acknowledging that we’re both sitting there figuring out how we fit into this new environment) a little bird whizzes 25 feet over our heads. The cat flinches down on her haunches and I try to suppress the thought that there’s anything wrong with having a scaredy cat for a pet. Moments later a cardinal flies no more than 5 feet over the cat and instinctively she flings her front paws in a pincer of death motion at the red streak daring to buzz the control tower. That’s my girl!
In amongst the pheasant cackles, the rooster’s crowing and the multitude of birds flying around I notice a black squirrel sitting stock still at the end of a thin limb 70 feet up on one of the larger trees. I then see a larger grey squirrel lower down and a few trees away. The grey appears to making its way towards the black. What does the grey want? Why doesn’t the black move? Soon the grey has clawed and scurried its way to the junction of same limb. The grey darts towards its foe and in a blink the black swings down like a four legged pendulum and scampers underneath the grey to the tree trunk. An epic game of “IT,” that James Bond chase scene choreographers could do worse than copy, ensues although I’m not sure what the consequences of being caught are and I don’t want to find out. Fortunately the black is expert at keeping the grey just far enough away. At one point the grey sizes up a leap from one tree to the next and very nearly falls to its certain demise, successfully grabbing onto a hanging branch with one claw. Eventually the grey takes a breather. I take the opportunity to get involved and decide that the black squirrel is a worthy recipient of my human largesse and protection. Clearly the underdog I’m drawn to its diminutive size, plucky pursuit maneuvers and slightly scruffy appearance. I locate a stone and throw it in the general direction of the grey. It misses by miles but serves to spook the pursuer. I also hiss at it for good measure. “And tell your grey buddies that they’re also not welcome in my garden!”
I did some post-action research (strike first, ask questions later??) and it seems that the black squirrel is a melanistic (opposite of albinistic) variety of the grey squirrel and that they sometimes mate. The black squirrel also seems to be quite capable of taking care of itself (as I witnessed) and also by virtue of it’s superior ability to tolerate cold and conceal themselves in forest environments.
In future I will stay out of these local squabbles and mind my own (and my cat’s) business.
*The cat came to us at midnight on May 1. A white Chevy Blazer pulled up outside our house dropped her off, did a u-turn and sped the wrong way up three-lane Rosa Parks Blvd. With the help of some food, we managed to entice her into our fenced off garden but she wouldn’t come inside so she stayed outside meowing all night. In the morning I went downstairs and there she was. She happily came inside and now she’s ours. Thank you Detroit.

What’s left of Monumental Kitty 😢 10/12/23
Created in 2010 by artist Jerome Ferretti and funded by a Kickstarter, the kitty once stood here near Cochrane Street and I-75.
