âYour majesty, I must warn you, if, gods forbid, our people come to discover the great lengths youâve been willing to go in this disagreement over the past two decades, they might start an uprising. And if you keep going, then itâll turn into a full-blown war and you know our kingdom wouldnât be able to survive that, not with them. Our cityâs walls may be high, high enough to keep out any beasts that may wander this far south, but it wouldnât keep them out. You know better than most how people from Eflorr are. If you donât wanna lose your crown, one way or another, then Iâd strongly advise that we come up with some peace treaty.â
âI know, I knowâŚâ King Ivan leaned back in his gilded throne with a huff, the quality of his voice was as thin as his towering frame, âa trade I think should suffice.â
A different advisor then timidly pipped up, âbut our mines ran cold ages ago, what could we possibly offer that would be satisfactory?â
Not lifting his cold gaze, the king stared at a fixed spot on the marble floor as he said, âI know one thing the king lacks that we may be able to provide for him⌠a wife.â
âA wifeâ,â both of the menâs eyes grew wide, âbut do you meanâ, your majesty, she is your only daughter, are you certain this is the fate you want her to have? Those people are barbaric! If one of the dangers that rule the north doesnât get to her first, one of their citizens surely will. Sire, what if history repeats itself?â
âThen let it do so. In fact, perhaps this could have been her purpose all along and I just didnât realise it. Couldnât see past my own rage to grasp how useful she actually could beâŚâ
Sharing a nervous glance, one of the advisors asked, âshould we send for her? See if she agrees with the plans?â
âNo, Iâll tell her when the time is right. Wouldnât want her to do anything stupid and ruin the one good thing she could ever provide,â finally lifting his stony gaze, the king commanded, âmake the arrangements, Iâll see to it that she doesnât ruin it.âÂ
Deep within the opulent halls of the gilded palace, standing grand and safe behind Ingornâs tall city walls, twisting up towards the clouds, up in a window in the western tower, there you sat.Â
Book in your lap, you leaned back against the small pillow youâd propped behind you to make the wide windowsill more comfortable. Small paper butterflies hung from strings above and some dangled so low that the childhood craft that still decorated your window trickled the crown of your head. Flipping the page, your fingertips brushed down over the illustration that appeared in the agricultural tome youâd found in one of your brothersâ rooms.Â
As long as you put it back before Angus returned then youâd probably be good. And if he were to somehow notice, then as long as he didnât rat you out to your father then it would be alright. Both Angus and a few of the others that were closer to your age, Oliver and Francis respectively, were always a bit of a gamble whether or not they would do such a thing. They didnât always have the same spirit as the eldest pair of your older brothers, Xavier and Callum.Â
You missed them so much your heart ached. The older they got, the longer their diplomatic missions seemed to stretch out, making the quiet palace that much more lonely in your solitude.Â
A knock then suddenly boomed at your door, causing you to jump edgily in your seat before you slammed the book shut and nervously stuffed it behind the firm pillow.Â
âCome in!â you called out, swiftly straightening out your dress that had crumbled around your legs at the comfortable seat. As the door to your room slammed open, the figure that stood in it caught you by surprise, âFatherâ, oh, hello,â you straightened your posture that much further at his arrival.Â
Skipping over any niceties, King Ivan simply stated, âyou need to pack up your stuff.â
Your brows knitted into a fierce furrow, âwhat?â
âNot everything, of course,â he cast a cold glance around the room though didnât take a step to enter it, âjust the things you are particularly attached to.â
âIâm sorry, I donât understand,â your head lightly shook from side to side, âwhere am I going?â
When his eyes finally gave you the time of day, it swiftly dropped to the floor as a heavy sigh flowed from his lips, âwhy do you have to be the spitting image of herâŚâ the muttering was unfortunately just loud enough for your ears to catch. His disappointment was always just loud enough for your ears to catch. When he entered the room and you moved to get up, he swiftly said, âstay seated, Y/n,â before he planted himself next to you on the wide windowsill, ânow, everything is already set into motion, so we donât have time for any of your theatrics,â not looking you in the eye, he frostily told you, âyou are to be married. A carriage has just arrived a few minutes ago to pick you up and transport you to Eflorr.â
âTo Eflorr?â your gaze grew wide, âyou wish for me to marry someone there?â
âNot just someone, you are to marry their king.â
âIâ⌠IââŚâ your chest rose and fell rapidly beneath your rosy dress, âbut father, you canâtâ, I canât go live with the people who killed mom.â
âWe donât know if they actually murdered her. But I do know that you did,â his glare locked upon you as he let himself seethe, âif you hadnât been born then sheâd still be alive,â the fact that the only thing he blamed more for his late wifeâs untimely demise then the kingdom sheâd perished in was you, remained a point that the sovereign had never been shy about sharing with you for as long as you could recall, âyour duty is to protect and serve this land, this crown,â your eyes naturally fluttered up to gaze at the twisted gold balanced upon his head, âif you donât go through with this, then those savages will come pillage and ruin your home. You are, regrettably, the very last hope this kingdom has of survival. You have no choice, Y/n. This marriage is the only thing that can stop a war we would never survive,â exhaling slowly, he then dominantly nodded in a concluding fashion, âpack your stuff, you have an hour.â
You felt tears sting your eyes as your bottom lip quivered, âan hour? Butâ, canât we wait at least a few days before I leave? Canât I get a chance to say goodbye to at least one of my brothers? None of them are home yet.â
Regret instantly washed over you as your fatherâs nostrils flared angrily. Seizing your arm in a bruising grip, he yanked you close as he hissed, âyou listen, and you listen carefully, you little brat. You have been the bane of my existence ever since you took your first breath. You took away the love of my life. You donât deserve a goodbye, you donât deserve anything. Do you think I got a goodbye when your mother suddenly went into labour on that diplomatic mission? No. All I got was you. Not another son, but a living, breathing reminder of what I lost that day,â your eyes squeezed shut as your cheek tingled at the memory of his strikes, ânow, be a good girl and go wet his prick, give him a few babies, do anything heâd fucking please, so that him and his barbaric army doesnât come here and slaughter everything you know and love.â
âYour highness, are you cold?â the high-ranking warden sitting across from you in the carriage noticed the shiver that your body couldnât seem to shake.Â
Tearing your eyes off of the scenery along The Emerald Path that the narrow window granted you a view of, you glanced back at the warrior. The brown hair he had practically tied off at the base of his neck blossomed into a dark beard. A bare palm clasped over an inked one in his lap as you met his gaze and said, âno, IâmââŚâ in truth, you were scared, so scared that you were trembling like a leaf, but you couldnât tell the foreign kingâs advisor that, too much weighted on your shoulders, you couldnât screw this up, âno,â glancing back out of the window, you only stared a moment at the sparse cottages that slowly came into view on the rolling hills before you turned your head again and let the nauseating nerves control your words, âpardon me, Barnes, is it?â
âYes, your highness?â
âSir, how much further till we get there?â your quiet voice echoed within the carriage, âitâs justâ, itâs been days.â
âOh, not long at all,â he shook his head lightly, âactually,â the knight leaned forward in his seat and cast his glance outside, âif you look out the window now, right there,â a small smile tugged at his lips as his finger shot up to point, âthat river, that means weâre getting close to BorĂźn city.â
As the river then suddenly curved before the dirt road, the clomping hooves of the horses that hauled the coach resonated as they trotted over a stone bridge.Â
Twisting your head, you glanced out to your right and spotted farmlands curve over the rolling hills that swiftly blossomed into thickets and towering flora youâd only assume was the southern perimeter of The Noll Woods. Books about this kingdom had been banned in your homeland for as long as you could remember, but even though you were essentially going in blind, you still werenât completely ignorant when it came to the dangers that called that sprawling forest its home, not that you were an expert in the slightest, but your brothers had from time to time told you tales of the monsters who dominated in this part. From giant and twisted insect-like creatures, to mischievous pixies, to even the rare dragon, those stories had always been your favourite. Apart from the rare occasion where Callum would share stories with you about your mother. Being the eldest, he was the only one who truly remembered her.Â
Instinctively, your fingers fluttered up to fiddle with the opalescent stone that hung from a chain around your neck. In the middle of the milky jewel was a small rune engraved into it. You had no idea what it meant, but your fingers had still traced the carving countless of times before as it had hung from your neck for as long as you could recall. It hadnât been till you were a ways into your teens that youâd come to discover that it had belonged to your mother.Â
Casting your glance out the other side as you passed a tall watchtower, behind the wide city stables unfolded a port town so quaint that it surprised you. Over the small valley of gabled roofs towered a central tree, and beyond all of that, the sparkle of the sea caught your eye, a sight youâd never beheld before, haven not only stemmed from a landlocked metropolis, but also not haven been permitted to leave your room as much as your heart had desired.Â
âThis is Eflorr?â you asked as the carriage began to roll up the winding path to the stone castle that loomed on the cliff, granting you a new view of how the river that youâd crossed slid through the city and spilt into the ocean.
âThis is Eflorr, your highness,â the corners of his lips twitched at the sight of how wide your curious eyes were.Â
âItâsâ⌠itâsââŚâ your stare danced over the lush ivy that climbed the solid towers, ânot what I expectedâŚâ
âWhat did you expect?â
Tearing your gaze away from the window, you blinked, âoh, I didnât meanâ,â suddenly worried that your shock had come out sounding rude, âI justâ⌠I donât know a lot about this land,â in the few tales youâd heard about this place, there had been a running gag that the people of Eflorr had lived so close to the dangerous beasts that called this part of the continent their home that they too had turned into monsters, âitâs just different than I imagined.âÂ
Ascending the jagged hill and passing through the front gate, it opened up into a wide courtyard before you felt the carriage finally roll to a stop.Â
The wagon creaked gently as Barnes stepped out first, though when his boots were firmly on the cobblestone, his frame twisted as he reached an outstretched hand back for you to grasp in support of your own exit. Ever so apprehensively, you slid your own palm into his as your other twisted in your long skirts before you slipped out of the carriage.Â
Letting go of his gasp, the soldier's low timbre washed over you as your head tilted back to take in the vast stronghold, âhis majesty, unfortunately, couldnât be here for your arrival as there was a bit of a dryad problem further up north he had to take care of,â you gaze tore away from the fort and fell upon him, âbut I assure you he should be back in time for the wedding.â
âOh, alright,â you breathed, unsure if that fact made you feel better or worse about the entire predicament.
âIf youâd like, I can give you a brief tour of the castle,â he offered as he led you towards the main entrance into the castle proper, âor if youâre exhausted after the journey, then I can just show you directly up to your chambers.â
Offering him a polite smile, you nodded, âa tour would be lovely, thank you.â
He only briefly went over the buildings surrounding the courtyard youâd entered into, as they were mainly designed as barracks and various other facilities for the local wardens, though the horses that stuck their heads out of the royal stalls in the corner did catch your eye before you moved on inside.Â
Barnesâ voice echoed in most of the chambers he showed you in the castleâs western wing. The vast stained-glass windows that were in the ballroom for instance took your breath away as you saw how the light streamed through them and warmed up the room with glittering little rays of colour.Â
Behind the great halls, squeezed in between and connecting the two major parts of the fort, there you crossed through a much more quiet and lush courtyard. The pebble paths that curved around the central fountain too curled around various topiary bushes that were trimmed to perfection like living sculptures.Â
Though as your guide showed you the eastern wing that crested over the foaming sea below, your curiosity got the better of you.Â
âHey, Barnes?â
Slowing his leisurely stride, he tilted his head slightly, âyes, your highness?â
âWhat are dryads?â your brows knit lightly together, âyou mentioned there was a problem with them, but what are they?â
âYou donât know?â he glanced over at you, clearly trying to mask his surprise as you shook your head, âoh, well, they are forest spirits, nymphs,â he explained as you roamed deeper down a broad hallway on the second floor, passing many private chambers both to your right and your left, âitâs not uncommon for them to wander and bother the folks who live further up the coast. Have you never encountered one? They are not as uncommon in ObelĂłn as most of the other creatures that thrive this far north.â
âNo, Iâve never seen oneâŚâ you shook your head as a low sigh flowed from your lips, ânever really seen anythingâŚâ
âNot much of an outdoorsy person?â he guessed in a light-hearted tone.Â
Forcing a smile, you replied, âyou could say thatâŚâ as you hadnât been allowed to be one even if you wanted to. Passing a set of double doors that stood wide open, the sight inside made you halt your steps, âis this the library?â
Shadowing you as your feet crossed the threshold, he nodded, âyes, it is,â then pointed back over his shoulder, âand your quarters are right down that hall.â
Numerous grand bookcases stood lined up all the way down to where a tall window allowed the sunlight in and let it stream through the rows.Â
âCan Iâ⌠would it be alright if I read some of them?âÂ
âOf course, your highness.âÂ
âWould you mind showing me which ones Iâm allowed to read?â you briefly peeked back at him as a bubble of anxiety fluttered in your belly, âI donât wanna accidentally read something that Iâm not allowed to.â
Barnes then blinked back at you a moment before he uttered, âyour highness, you can read each and every one of them if youâd like. Why wouldnât you be allowed to read whatever you wish? They are yours after all, or will be after the wedding,â the corners of your lips twitched upwards as he then asked, âwould you like to peruse the titles now or do you want to see your chambers?â
âOh, uhm,â you tore your gaze away from the tomes and turned back, âIâll look later.â
âAlright,â he nodded, extending his inked arm to show you the way. As he pushed the heavy wooden door open to the room at the very end of the hall, his voice rang out once more, âthis is the peacock suite,â following him inside, he settled to a stop near the exit for you to explore the space on your own, âyou can, of course, change anything youâd like for it to match your taste.â
âThank you,â you breathed as you slowly made your way deeper into the chamber. It was gently divided with a more formal area towards the front where both tufted couches and a crackling fireplace stood, as well as a set of doors that opened up to a quaint balcony. Towards the left, under a swirling archway, twisted a broad canopy bed up towards the tall ceilings, warm with blankets and furs, and in the corner, by a breezy partition, stood a deep cobber bathtub.
Haven not noticed that heâd moved, you then heard as Barnes creaked the doors to a close, âif you need anything, anything at all, Iâll be right outside.â
With a loud creak, the heavy double doors opened before you and revealed the grand hall. As soft music gushed out, you nearly didnât recognise the space from your tour the other day as it was now decorated with vibrant flowers and flowing banners that dropped down from the high ceilings above, as well as being completely packed with a swarm of people. A thin path parted the giddy crowd right down the middle towards the opposing grand door that guards opened simultaneously to yours.Â
A shaky breath filled your lungs as you stared at the man crossing over the threshold. The flickering candlelight caught the honeyed shine of the locks that came down to tickle the nape of his neck. A bit darker, his short beard was full and warmed up the bottom half of his gruff features. He sure looked like a man who could slay a kraken with his bare fists, as the soft fur cloak that draped over his shoulders did not conceal his bulky physic one bit. The neckline of his indigo tunic stretched low enough for you to see the concave of his fuzzy chest and the impressive battle scars that broke up the rippling flesh.Â
Youâd seen the portrait of the king that hung in the hallway that stretched up towards the throne room, but to see him before your very eyes, in flesh and blood and not precise paint, was something else entirely.Â
The long and embroidered train of the blue silk kirtle you wore dragged across the store floor behind you as both you and the monarch slowly stepped into the chamber to join in the very middle.Â
The enchanting music stopped as you reached one another and the parted paths to either exit slowly closed as the crowd gathered and enclosed around the sacred vow that was about to ensue.Â
Parting the sea of people like a divine force, an elderly woman, with a braided grey mane so long that it hit the floor, stepped up beside the both of you.Â
âPeople of Eflorr,â the croneâs calm voice boomed, âtoday marks a day of unity, a day of peace, and most of all a day of love. Like a seed planted in the soil, tonight we will all witness this relationship blossom and go on the journey of growing into a magnificent tree, with roots strong enough to endure any storm, to propagate new seedlings that will watch over and shade our kingdom when yours have fallen.âÂ
Looking to the king, she handed him a small dagger from her belt and spoke, âblade across skin,â and he reached out for your right hand, âstrike out your seedlingâs love line,â your breath hitched as you felt him slice the top of your palm. Crimson blood trickled down onto his own hand as yours rested atop it, âand claim it as your own,â he flipped the blade around and handed it to you, before presenting you his own palm, open in yours. He didnât even blink as you hesitantly pierced the calloused skin and traced the line already adoring his broad palm, âweave your lines together, so they become the same,â he then moved to clasp your hands together, his wide grip engulfed yours completely. Your teeth sank into just the faintest bit of your bottom lip at the fresh sting of your wound as it bled into his, âand may this scar serve you as a reminder, of the vow you made on this momentous day.âÂ
And as the last of the matron's words flowed from her lips so did the roar of celebration that erupted throughout the crowd as the festivities of the night bloomed at an instant.
The feast had been nothing short of immaculate. Countless of dishes had been spread out on the crowded banquet tables ranging from the savoury braised legumes to the sweet and shiny pies. It was an impossible task to try and taste every one of them, but an excuse you still used to stay glued to your seat and not get up and mingle with the boisterous gathering of strangers.Â
As a stark contrast, you thought you only noticed the king take two bites before he rose to greet some latecomers who had arrived. Laughing and chatting with the sea of people, he hadnât offered you a single word, barely even a brief glance the whole night. Though your gaze still followed him from your seat up at the high table as he moved through the crowd like they were all his dearest friends.Â
When the moon had floated up to be high in the sky, clearly visible on the other side of the stained glass, your head had dropped down into a propped-up palm as a deep yawn forced its way out of your frame.Â
âAre you tired, your majesty?â a deep timbre suddenly found your ears, a specific tone that caused your spine to straighten out at once.Â
Whipping your head to your right, your weary eyes grew wide as you saw the king again at his seat, âno, Iâm alright,â you hastily coughed out, âIâm so sorry for behaving like that in your presence. This party is exquisite.âÂ
âItâs alright, you can yawn,â you suddenly felt the need to look away now that his ocean stare was finally fixed upon you, âitâs late, I was about to retire for the night as well, so I can only imagine how you must feel. If youâd like, I could escort you back to your chambers. Iâm not sure how familiar youâve become with the castle since youâve arrived, but even I can still get lost when the corridors are this dark and Iâve indulged in perhaps one too many goblets of wine.â
A flutter of nauseating nerves rushed within your belly, but even so, you still pushed through and forced a smile, âif thatâs what the king desires, then sure, you can escort me.â
It was your wedding night. You knew what was about to happen.Â
Or, actually, you didnât quite know what the marital act entailed, but you were sure a man such as Steve had enough of an understanding to take charge. All you knew was what little youâd been told. To strip down naked, not whine or scream, and do as he tells you.Â
The soaring butterflies within you only grew more ferocious as you followed his long stride throughout the castle. Out of the ballroom and through a cold stone hallway, when you crossed the bridge that linked the two wings over a part of the cliff that descended dramatically, you nearly doubled over the parapet to empty your stomach over the town of BorĂźn that blossomed below.Â
But with a shaky intake of breath, your fist closed around the silk of your skirt as you settled yourself and forced your feet to keep moving. Even as you passed the threshold into the eastern part of the castle, you still shadowed the monarch up the many steps until his broad palm held the door to your chambers open for you to enter.Â
The fire had been lit while you were gone, and the room was encased in the warm glow.Â
âDid, uhâŚâ you heard the door close behind you as the king attempted a bit of small talk, âdid you have a nice time tonight?âÂ
âI did, your majesty,â you kept your answer brief out of fear that heâd hear the tremble to your tone.Â
Slowly turning his back to you, his gaze washed over the room, âare you pleased with your bed chambers?â he settled to face the balcony, the door slightly ajar to let the night breeze seep through and rustle the sheer curtains, âbecause if you donât like it, if youâd rather have a view of the town then the sea, then thatâs an easy problem to fix.âÂ
âI think the view is just fine from here, but thank you,â you answered politely as you gathered up the last bit of your courage and reached back to undo the long row of buttons that went down the spine of the light blue dress.Â
When the silky garment dropped to the floor, the quiet rustle was enough to draw the kingâs attention.
First offering you just a quick glance over his shoulder, he then swiftly whirled around completely, âwhat are you doing?â
Weaving your fingers in the thin material of your chemise, you blinked back at his stunned features, âIâm sorry, am I doing it wrong?â sure that he could already see everything through the sheer, white fabric.Â
His feet didnât move as he asked, âwhat are trying to do?â before he averted his gaze to the stone floor.Â
âWell,â you uttered quietly, âitâs our wedding night.â
âOhâŚâ was all he breathed.Â
âTo be transparent, Iâm actually not quite sure whatâs to happen, but I do know itâs something,â reaching up, you took the gold and twisted circlet, that crowned your head, off and carefully sat it down on the side table to your left, âI donât know the details, I just know that I should strip down. Do you know what weâre supposed to do?â
âFuck,â he cursed, briefly squeezing his eyes shut, âyes I do, but, your majesty, please, keep your clothes on,â his gaze flickered back to you as you slowly began to hike up the last layer.Â
âWhy?â your fingers froze, âisnât it a tradition here for us toââ
âWell, yes, butââŚâ he let out a strained sigh before slowly stating, âIâm gonna go.âÂ
A chill crawled up your skin, ââŚoh, I seeâŚâ you uttered quietly as he crossed the room, âdid I do something wrong?â
Halting in the doorway as he ripped it open, âno, youââŚâ but the rest of his words crumbled as his gaze settled upon you one last time, instead letting a low sigh flow from his lungs, âsleep well,â and added nearly subconsciously just before the door slammed shut, âgoodnight, dove.â
Even though a wave of relief washed over you, a sting of hurt also followed suit as the king left.Â
Had you done something wrong, or did he just find you that repellent, that hideous, that he refused to perform his marital duties?

GLADIATORS / A HotD Au
SUMMARY
The Andals came from Essos and conquered five of the seven kingdoms, and founded The Great Republic of the Andals and has them under its yolk, they took every tribe, culture and town that oppose them and subdued it, they took their men, and their women, and slaved them, only the greatest, strongest, better men, became gladiators under the sun of the mighty Republic
Pairings: Slave/Gladiator!Cregan Stark x Domina!Reader, Gladiator!Harwin x Domina!Reader, Slave/Gladiator!Aemond x Slave!Reader, Slave/Gladiator!Aegon x Patrician!Reader, Gladiator Trainer!Daemon x Empress!Reader.Â
Warnings: Ancient Rome AU, Cursing, slavery (and everything that comes with it, technically rape, forced labour, punishments), blood, guts, gladiator battles, lude language, nudity, sex and evrything related is no biggie here, weâre a âsex positiveâ Republic, mentions of sex, same sex couples, orgies, and more. Assassinations, assassinations attempts, pagan rituals, slaughter of animals for ritualistic purposes, crimes of war, more might be added by chapter.
The trilogy, Smut, Angst & Fluff (some)Â
Since it's heavily inspired by âSpartacusâ, âDominaâ and âGladiatorâ, you can expect similar events to be depicted here. If you are an Historian, you are clearly going to want to kick my ass, since Iâm not, expect inaccuracies in rituals, cultures descriptions and religions.Â
Notes: Alright⌠of course Iâll be adapting the ancient Roman empire to the Westerosi world⌠so here are some guidelines
âRomansâ will be referred as âAndalsâ, and after those they are two other types of natives of Westeros, the âNorthmenâ or rather The first men, and the Rhoynar from the South.Â
Iâll be using ancient roman terms that due to context should be easy to decipher jeje, and Iâll be using much of their rituals and customs.Â
This will be considered âshortâ, as each gladiator will have three chapters. All the stories happen at the same time, though they won't cross much against each other, you can read them either the I's of each and then the II's and III's or read the characters separately, the ones that interest you.
Please remember, I am not an historian, just relax and have fun! that's what we are here for.
EVERY READER IS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER! each character has a different reader! and they do not meet each other!

Alrighty folks I finished the game. I will put non-spoiler thoughts here and then put my spoiler thoughts under the cut. Again, these are MY OPINIONS. I am happy to hear your thoughts but I'm not arguing with you because you won't change my mind.
* holy shit this is a big game
* Mournwatch is the best faction in my opinion. Idk they're just cool and not problematic lol
* there is some retconning of established facts, but I take it this way: it's been a long time since the original trilogy's events. Origins was canonically sometime almost 20 years before Veilguard - think of life 20 years ago, it was very different. A lot can change and gods coming back changes a lot. Factions grow and change and become something different. Also this is NORTHERN Thedas, an area we've never played in. With few exceptions we've always had companions from the south and learned information about the north second hand. I think that's important to keep in mind when people complain about things not staying the same or 'lore accurate.'
* I still recommend picking the same faction as your projected romantic interest
* The cameos are ... Fine. Again, it's been a long time in game. Are you the same person you were 10 years ago? 20 years? I think Morrigan is the most disappointing but my headcanon is that motherhood has really suited her, also a decision she made off screen that is explained to you during the course of the game also made her personality make a little more sense
* I think I liked this game because I went in with an open mind. I have always loved Bioware games for the writing and the companions and this game has those in spades. I loved how fleshed out the characters were though it doesn't approach the levels that say, Baldur's Gate 3 reaches. But overall it was an enjoyable experience, around 65 hours for me to finish just about everything. Though maybe shave off about 5 hours for the character creator, which was great.
Okay so now for the spoilers. DO NOT OPEN IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!!
* I maxed out all of my companions and factions and nearly 100% every area. There was no quest undone. I think that's why I got a good ending, namely Solas agreeing to bind himself to the Veil, sharing a big kiss with Lavellan, and walking into the Fade together. I did lose one member, Harding, and that fucking sucked. I haven't looked into spoilers so I don't know if switching her and Davrin would have made a difference cause Davrin is a Warden and would have fared better against the blight idk. I'll have to look into it. Overall I was happy though.
* I ... Should have seen the Varric twist but I wasn't looking for it so it just passed over me. I was devastated, but I think that it was well done and well earned. Still sad though. That was the second time I cried during the finale, after Harding.
* This felt like a Bioware game to me. It felt big, it felt complex, and the humor was always there. The QoL improvements and expansion of classes and abilities made this so much fun.
* I felt the romances were lacking a bit in content, though Emmrich had suuuuch a sweet and gentle romance. I loved it so much. They banged in a graveyard in what I assume is a coffin. A+ love him, love Manfred. I just wish I had kiss options a la BG3. I got spoiled. đ
* I'll play this again. And again. That's how my brain works. I think they need to patch a sort of 'golden nug' option into the game and a new game plus to make things better. If there are DLC, I'll happily play them.

hi Pime! Is it too early to ask questions about your new project yet? ROs and characters and setting and stuff? Sorry if this sounds pushy, thatâs not intended!
Not at all! I enjoy talking about my IFs <3
Since I'm working on two projects I'll give you a quick rundown of both of them. First,
âââLeesangreâââ
This game is set in the southernmost tip of South America in a distant future after a cataclysm wipes out most of humanity and the Earth turns into a big snow globe.
The main character travels in a caravan along with their family/clan which are also the only people they have ever interacted with, 1. because there aren't a lot of human beings around, just small settlements, and 2. because their family doesn't want other people to know about the main character. The lack of contact with other human beings and their constant dependency on their family has made the main character very sheltered.
The game starts after the death of the matriarch of the clan just as the main character's big brother becomes the new leader and everyone is feeling very uncertain about the future. The family consists of the main character's father (a huge mother-hen to everyone but mostly to MC and MC's niblings); the main character's brother (who has a strained relationship with MC); the mechanic of the caravan (the best mechanic in the world, or at least that's what they proclaim); the "shaman" of the caravan (a woman the caravan adopted when she was nine, she's in her late twenties at the start of the game); the main character's nephews, two teens who are also the clan's hunters, and the preteen nibling who has yet to find what role in the clan they will fulfill (these three were given to the clan when they were six, five, and one year old and they are presumably children of another big brother MC has never met); the main character's five-year-old niece and four-year-old nibling (they are the children of MC's brother and the mechanic). The clan also adopts a guy they find passed out in the snow at the start of the game (something neither the clan nor this guy really wanted but is forced onto all of them after he finds out about the main character).
The romantic options are:
Heco (they/them) â the clan's mechanic. They are thirty years old and they prefer to be maintaining the caravan than interacting with others but they don't mind people sitting in a corner and watching them work if they aren't too distracting and promise not to touch their tools. They're also the parent of MC's youngest's niblings, but they aren't in a relationship with MC's brother and never have been. It's a bit complicated.
Mo (she/her) â the curandera or shaman of the clan. If Heco is the hands of the caravan, Mo is its soul. It's impossible not to know where she is at any given time because she's a talking machine and also the type who loves to make people laugh. Of course, her jokes are hit or miss now that everyone is mourning the clan's matriarch but Mo's sense of humor can be like a runaway freight train if she isn't paying attention. (Mo is also my attempt at the friends-to-lovers trope)
Gil (he/his) â the guy the clan saves from certain death. He's in his early twenties and speaks a language that's more common in the north of the continent, so what was he doing completely alone so down south? Even though not much is known about him, he is friendly and quick to adapt to his new life in the caravan.
This game is a trilogy and I will add a few more ROs in the next books.
Project 2 is called,
Ë.ŕźË.ŕźA Song of Sirens and Soulmates (ASOSAS)Ë.ŕźË.ŕź
ASOSAS is set in modern times (2024âź) in an alternate timeline where Sirens appeared in the fifties changing the world forever. The game starts in New York but the main character and their buddy are thrown into the Siren realm around the first or second chapter so don't expect a lot NY lore.
In this alternate timeline Sirens are considered THE beauty standard with tall and toned bodies if they are male and petite and graceful figures if they are female. Also pointy ears, cavernous black eyes, and wide mouths full of sharp teeth.
Although they prefer to live in their own dimension it isn't rare to see Sirens as movie stars, runway models, and musicians. Most humans won't ever interact with this larger-than-life creatures but a few lucky ones will get claimed by the Song of the Siren, a red dot that shows up just above a person's belly button and marks them as a Siren's soulmate. Sure, leaving the human realm means never coming back but most people will take the opportunity if it means marrying and forming a family with these impossibly beautiful (and rich) beings.
Unfortunately, the main character of this game isn't interested in any of that and has been on the run since they were twenty and they were claimed. Seven years later, their betrothed finds them in a prison cell after they and their road buddy are detained at a punk show. MC is able to convince the Siren to bring said road buddy along and off they go into the Siren realm. Now MC and their ally must come up with a plan to escape before MC's wedding day befalls them.
The romantic options are:
Spook (ze/hir) â MC's ally in this mess. They met a month before the start of the game and decided to travel together for the time being. Spook is a thirty-three year old crust punk that can't stand Sirens and the power they wield over humans. Ze's also half-human and half-Siren, something ze carefully hides behind masks and dark shades. (Non-binary RO)
Verna/Vernon "Vern" Harley (she/her or he/his) â Twenty-four year old Vern is on the same boat as MC; they are a Siren's soulmate who has just arrived to this realm. Unlike MC, however, they've completely bought into the Siren fantasy and can't wait to marry and form a big family with their betrothed. Vern might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but they are a sweetheart and painfully candid. They are a breath of fresh air among the sneers of the Sirens. (Gender choosable RO)
Camille Abadi (she/her or he/his) â In their mid to late thirties, Camille has been married to their Siren for a longer time than they've been single. They speak with the tiniest trace of a french accent, which is hard to notice when they so seldom speak. They are very polite and attentive but a hard person to get to know on a deeper level. (Gender choosable RO)

I don't understand how Leigh Bardugo could write something as bad as King of Scars and a trilogy as average and problematic in its messages as Grisha ?!
Knowing that she also wrote Six of Crows which was very good for me, limits most people to only knowing that about the Grishaverse (even if, if you take it in the context of the original trilogy, that makes the fate of the Grisha and of the Darkling even worse)... The Language of Thorns with some really cool stories, the Demon in The Wood (which makes you wonder even more why the Darkling is supposed to be the fucking bad guy in the original trilogy and die at the end ?!). Not forgetting recently The Ninth House which has 2 very good volumes and the beginning of The Familiar.
I have a hard time understanding how she can produce good things and such bad things.
I hear that not everyone is perfect, but for me the gap is still huge.
And the most paradoxical thing is that while she seems to gradually improve her way of writing, at no time does she acknowledge having made questionable choices in the writing of Grisha ?
Just see her attempt at moralizing backpedaling with the King of Scars duology...
TW!: Genocide
I don't think she knows or even cares about how genocide and prejudice in real life are not how she portrays them. And they definitely don't vanish by magical means. Clearly she put them in her story as a dramatic effect but she handled it with such unrealism and carelessness that makes you wonder what was the point of putting such issues in her book in the first place. She places such importance to the romance part (Mal Ă Alina, Kaz Ă Inej, Nina Ă Matthias) that the problems of her world take a third place in her books.
Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom weren't such flawed because the heroes there did some personal jobs and didn't have a humanitarian goal. Kaz, in particular, has made it clear that he doesn't give a fuck about the world, only about his pocket. So they were some pretty straightforward books and well-written enough that you cannot see the issues.
But in the trilogy we have this huge war going on while the protagonist wails about her love interest, kills her enemy at his weakest (so no flex of her powers against him) and other people vanish the Fold for her.
In the duology Bardugo wanted to get back to her own readers:
- "People dislike Zoya. Hmm... Let's make her Suli with a very sad background. Also let's make her the most important character among the heroes just for these haters to shut up. Because if they don't, they'll be racists and misogynists"
- "People love the Darkling. Hmm.... Let's remind those readers of mine what he has done by having Zoya conjure up every delulu thought about him. Also let's have Mal, Alina, Zoya, Nikolai and freaking Misha make him shut up and look stupid"
- "Ah shit they love Aleksander too much. Ok how about this. I'm gonna make the Starless Cult out of them to prove how blind they look"
- "People didn't like the R&R ending. Hmm.... Let's bring Alina back and have her say how happy and peaceful she feels with her current state"
- "People hate Mal. Hmm... Let's have him be likable and funny while thwarting Aleksander's comments like a pro. It's not like he isn't a hot-tempered guy or smth"
(and about bringing the Darkling back, this was lazy writing. Instead of making the heroes face new foes from the north and south, she recycled villains)
By the way, when the TV adaptation of S&B came out she said that she wanted to fix the diversity. Can you imagine that? Not book!Alina as a character, not the trilogy's ending (not protesting on that cruel scene on the show where the Crows gleefully kill the Grisha that stood with the Darkling) but the diversity. Season two's ending was the showrunner's idea as well as Mal's change of personality, not Bardugo's.
Anyway, she should stay on writing short stories. I really love the Language of Thorns and Demon in the Wood so why ruin your fictional world further?

Since you might be interested (and likely read the Sin War trilogy) based on map and region information, Diablo IV lately hinted at the first novel taking place in Teganze (AKA: Diablo equivalent of African savanna). Thoughts on that?
Here's the thing about The Books.
The Sin War trilogy came out in 2006. Massive chunks of them have already been retconned (The Worldstone is a big one, Rathma being Not Dead is pretty significant. Apparently there was an active volcano somewhere in Estuar), and characters as they are in the books behave drastically different from how they do in the games. The geography was never that well laid out to begin with. At this point, they're more of a vague guide than gospel when it comes to the current series, so take anything you read in them with a grain of salt.
That being said.
If you get creative, and look at things a bit lopsided, and accept that some things just aren't going to perfectly slot together, you can kinda piece together roughly where/how things took place.
I've been thinking that Birthright actually starts up in the Fractured Peaks, and makes its way into and through Hawezar, ending at the very edge of Toraja. They do cross through some scrubland, which could be Teganze, but it's mentioned in one sentence and nothing of note happens there. Scales of the Serpent crosses south west down through Toraja, and eventually curves northwest up into Kehjan as they head for the City, before flipping up to head straight north to the Cathedral of Light. Exactly where Kehjan the city, and the Cathedral of Light are, is a bit of a mystery.
Seram is surrounded by a temperate forest, and Uldyssian and his companions who hale from the area are considered northerners/uplanders. Seram is possibly closer to the Cathedral of Light than any other location in the books, at least laterally. There are two zones in D4 that have temperate forest; the Peaks, and Scosglen. It should be noted that D4 takes place in the winter time, and the Sin War seems to be during the summer, or possibly spring (for being a farmer, Uldyssian makes no mention of when his next harvest might be. They have good weather through the entire series despite being in the 'north' though.)
Seram could be in either one; we don't know conclusively which side of the mountains its on. Being in the southern end of Scosglen would would put Kehjan/jistan immediately south of the town, when it's stated to be more westerly. Kehjan is also noted to be a few days ride-by-caravan to the nearest major seafaring ports, with travelers able to get lost and end up in Seram by accident.
The sea-port could be something on the Twin Seas, or it could be one on the Sea of Light. We don't know, either one could fit. Personally though, I like to think Backwater in Hawezar is our port-town, doing trade with the Western countries over the Sea of Light.
As the group plan to flee Partha in Birthright, Mendeln tells us that Toraja (present-day Nahantu) is still to the Southwest of Kehjan. They're two separate regions. The group plans to hide in the Torajan jungles to escape what Lilith started. Scales of the Serpent takes place entirely within the region of Toraja though. They rampage their way through the Torajian jungles on their mission to root out the Triune.
Kind of fitting that Mephisto's tomb and shenanigans are apparently in the same place as the original Temple of the Triune.
Now, the differences between Toraja and Kehjan are a little...muddy. There are multiple books and games that put them as being two different entitys, one entity, or sometimes even three.
The lands that make up Kehjan become Kehjistan after the conclusion of the Sin War. This was at the beginning of the Age of when the Vizjerei were in control, and they moved the capital from Kehjan the City to Viz-Jun, down in Toraja somewhere. During the Sin War, Kehjan contained parts of Kurast/Toraja/Nahantu, but lost them over time. Nowadays, Kehjistan mainly consists of the dried out borderlands. Big difference from the apparent verdant jungle that it was made up of in the books eh?
It could be that the various magical battles over the ages ruined the lands. That's actually the explanation given for the Desolate Sands; that the area used to be lush, but was blasted flat and ruined by a particularly nasty Mage Clan battle. It's not clear whether or not all the damage Uldyssian and Inarius do to the landscape surrounding the Cathedral is undone or not. One might imagine that such a clash would leave behind some kind of impact, but then, Uldyssian may have gone ahead and fixed everything when he ascended.
Kurast is it's own can of worms. In D2 its treated as a separate entity from Toraja, even though it actually makes up most of Toraja itself. Kehjistan 'owns' it at the time, along with their more northernly territories. After Mephisto thoroughly ruins the capital city of Travincal, the capital is transferred to Caldeum, which prospers.
Until it doesn't.
The most likely explanation here is that a powerful Kehjistan conquered or annexed the Torajian territories through an allyship with the Mage Clans, shortly after the Sin War. After the Mage Clan Wars, Kehjistan began a slow decline in power, and coincidentally a slow receding of land. By present-day Diablo IV, it is nothing more than the burnt out shell of a once-great empire.
Now, the Cathedral. We know it takes about a day and a half for the Edyrem to march from Kehjan to the Cathedral, although they have the benefit of mowing down the forest in their path. So lets say its about two days for a good ol' Pilgrim. Trouble is, we don't know exactly where Kehjan the City was. Maybe it became Caldeum itself, perhaps it is lost in the sands somewhere. Maybe Blizzard has changed all of this, and it is actually down in Nahantu somewhere.
Tbh I feel like Blizzard has shot themselves (and the rest of us) in the foot by not already showing where Kehjan + the Temple of the Triune + The Cathedral were. They're running out of space.
This is more of a side-note, but both Uldyssian and Mendeln make note that the landscape changes biome very abruptly while they travel. Almost like a patchwork quilt. Almost as though someone (or, quite possibly, multiple someones) built and stitched the place together. Or perhaps even like a bunch of video-game levels interconnected with one another.
Anyway. Have a boney-Lilith x Inarius that I never posted and prolly won't finish, since this is my art blog.
#The Sin War#words#this got long#asks#answers#Oh yeah and this doesn't even get into my headcanon that Nevesk used to be Seram#or that the old Cathedral is actually buried under Kyovashad#literally none of the towns or cities mentioned in SW are on any map#Seram? Tulisam? Partha? who knows#Hashir? Istani? Pfft#Kehjan was apparently built on top of an old Nephalem city#so hey!#maybe it's on top of Kasama#(probably not though)#Actually with the way Knaak described Kehjan's underbelly I think he was taking inspiration from the dungeons in Kurast#which is a thought that just complicates things further#so lets not go there#Diablo#Diablo 3#Diablo 4#Diablo 2#Diablo IV

The Order of the White Lotus has five major members in the show: Iroh, Pakku, Piandao, King Bumi, and Jeong Jeong. Of those five, only Iroh went on to a have a significant role in post-show media. Pakku appears as a minor character in North and South (even though him having a really major role would make a lot of sense in that trilogy). Piandao, Bumi, and Jeong Jeong haven't appeared in anything. It really seems like no one had the slightest idea, even a bad idea, about what to do with them or how to use their characters.

Please Read This Series
This is completely unrelated to anything I post and I know I haven't really posted here in a hot minute (I'm gonna try again I promise). But I am two books into this trilogy and the community feels tragically tiny for it on any site I'm on. I want this book series to be incredibly popular it is so beautiful. The few posts I've seen here so far, keep it up please!
Do you like fantasy? Epic fantasy with magic? Do you like queer/LGBTQ+ characters treated naturally within a fantasy world? Do you like awesome stories about gods and wars? Please read this series.
Between Earth and Sky is a series by Rebecca Roanhorse and currently all three books are available to purchase. I will say now I am not indigenous and can't comment on the accuracy of portrayal but I find her use of indigenous north and south American and Polynesian cultural influence in her worldbuilding to be soooooo refreshing in a sea of medieval/renaissance high fantasy. Not there is anything wrong with those, but it is so nice to see someone do something new and the way she describes everything I feel like I'm there, like I'm seeing these people. Rebecca's description, characterization, and overall writing is incredible in my opinion. This was the first book I haven't been able to put down since I was devouring books in high school. I struggle to remember characters in most content I consume but I do not struggle at all with this book. Every name sticks in my head and I can always remember the details of their motivations and goals.
Mild spoilers ahead!!!!!!!
The story follows Serapio and his destiny to become a god reborn, Naranpa trying to fix the corruption of Tova's leaders, however fruitlessly, and a disgraced sailing captain named Xiala, a teek woman who ferries Serapio and falls in love with him. Despite these three being the main characters, the books pull back the curtains on others such as scheming merchant lords and a matron's son trying to do his best for his clan.
There are gods fighting for power and a political power struggle between so many groups it feels dizzying in a good way. Everyone's striving for power over the city in some way or another. There is magic and a balance of elements and it honestly reminds me of the series Avaryan Rising, specifically the first book The Hall of the Mountain King by Judith Tarr in the struggle between light and dark and the push for political power. Except it doesn't have a weird pseudo-incest subplot in the second book and has actually queer characters. (Mirain and Vadin should have gotten together and I fucking stand by this)
Regarding queer/LGBTQ+ characters: Xiala is canonically bisexual, multiple characters have very fluid sexuality and it's mentioned frequently, and there are 'non-binary' characters, specifically Iktan's gender is referred to as bayeki and xe uses xe/xir pronouns. It feels so natural and accepted within the various cultures depicted.
If this interests you, then start with Black Sun. The other two books in the trilogy, Fevered Star and Mirrored Heavens are also available both in print, ebook, and audiobook formats. I admittedly have not begun the third book yet as I just purchased it, but the first two are so good that I have faith Rebecca can round off this trilogy near-perfectly.

Massacre in Korea l Pablo Picasso
The third installment of the antiwar trilogy that began with Guernica; this painting depicts the massacre of North Koreans by US forces; the painting was completed in 1951, but was not exhibited in South Korea until 2021. In fact, the shadow of ideological confrontation existed everywhere in both Koreas and the art world was no exception.

I see Indiana Jones x The Mummy crossovers, and raise youâŚ
Hamilton x Pirates of the Caribbean Crossover
I mean, think about it. The timeline and locations actually line up more than you would think:
Shortly after his birth in 1708, Will Turner and his parents move to North Carolina, where they would live for the next 7 years, until 1715, when his father, Bootstrap Bill Turner, joins Captain Jack Sparrow on the Black Pearl and Will moves with his mother to England.
The main events of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl take place in 1728, when Jack Sparrow is about 38 years old and Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are about 20.
Dead Man's Chest and At World's End happen about a year later, in 1729, including Will and Elizabeth's wedding and the conception of their son, Henry Turner, who is born about 9 months later in May(?) 1730.
Hector Barbossa is in his early 60s at the time of the events above, though probably biologically in his 50s, considering his cursed and undead status for a decade prior to COTBP.
On Stranger Tides takes place in 1750, when Jack is about 60 years old and Barbossa is in his early 80s. Dead Men Tell No Tales comes a year later in 1751, when Jack is about 61, the Turner couple are about 43, Henry is about 21, and his new love interest and Hector's daughter, Carina Smyth Barbossa, is about 19.
As the name of the film series suggests, all of the events above take place in the Caribbean, with the original trilogy centering around Port Royal, Jamaica.
Alexander Hamilton is born in 1755 or 1757 in Charlestown, in the Caribbean island of Nevis, only about 60-70 miles south of St Martin, where Henry met Jack in DMTNT. In 1757, Henry would be about 27 years old, his parents would be 49, Jack would be 67, and Carina would be 25. Henry and Carina would probably also have children around Hamilton's age group.
Hamilton moves from Nevis to the 13 American Colonies in October 1772, at the age of either 15 or 17. At this time, Henry would be about 42 years old, his parents would be 64, Jack would be 82, and Carina would be 40.
On April 19, 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord begin the American Revolutionary War, an 18 or 20-year-old Hamilton enlisting on the side of the Patriots soon afterwards. About a year later, on July 4, 1776, the American Colonies declare their independence from Britain, forming the United States of America. In the latter date, Henry would be about 46 years old, his parents would be 68, Jack would be 86, and Carina would be 44.
On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris is signed, officially ending the Revolutionary War (which was partly fought in the Caribbean) and cementing American independence. On this day, Hamilton would be about 26 or 28 years old, Henry would be about 53, his parents would be 75, Jack would be 93 (if still alive), and Carina would be 51.
In other words, the events and locations of POTC are close enough to the Revolution that at least Jack and the Turners would have still been alive and young enough and lived and worked close enough to meet Alexander Hamilton and his peers and play an active role in aiding him and the other Patriots in the Revolutionary War, at least at the beginning. They could be doing so to help their family friend Hamilton, free Will's childhood home from oppression, and/or, at the very least, spite the British Empire for all the trouble they've caused them in the past. There's even historical basis for the Patriots (and their enemies) using privateers in the War.
That would be an interesting crossover that I'm surprised to see no one write about yet.

Answers!
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
If I count everything, 181. If we're not counting meta pieces, 163.
2. whatâs your total ao3 word count?
802,674
3. what fandoms do you write for?
I've written for quite a few, but my big ones have been Fallout, Red vs. Blue, and Dragon Age. I've also written for The Penumbra Podcast, RWBY, Mass Effect, Person of Interest, and The 13 Clocks. (And now I'm also writing for Final Fantasy XIV, though I haven't posted anything yet and probably won't until after I'm caught up with MSQ.)
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
Homecoming (Red vs. Blue, Tucker & Junior, rated T)
Juno Steel & the Fox's Teeth (Penumbra Podcast, Juno/Peter, rated E)
Sensibility (Penumbra Podcast, Juno/Peter, rated E)
Respite (Red vs. Blue, North/Wash/York, rated T)
Home Front (Fallout 3, Amata/F!LW, rated T)
I was genuinely surprised and charmed at how well-received "Homecoming" was (and continues to be), as I considered it fairly niche at the time of writing, but then, Tucker is a popular character. The response to my Penumbra fics certainly caught me by surprise, in the manor of, "OH, this is what it's like to write the popular pairing!" "Respite" was one of my very early RvB fics and it's not one I'm particularly happy with now, as I think I would have done certain things differently had I written it later, but nonetheless it was well-received; not a lot of people were actually writing North/Wash/York at the time. "Home Front" is one of my favorite Fallout fics I've written; I'm still proud of it.
5. do you respond to comments?
Yes, I try to! Sometimes I take a bit longer these days, but I do try to reply to every comment, barring the odd rude one which I'll just delete or ignore.
6. whatâs the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
It's maybe cheating to say The Fall, given that it's the second in a trilogy so the story isn't actually over at the end of that fic. But that fic is a downer the whole way and ends with the main character's probable death, so. It's pretty angsty. After that, I'd say "Please (Don't Leave Me)", an RvB South/CT fic where CT doesn't live and South is dealing with the aftermath, poorly.
7. whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I'd say I've written quite a few--I'm a big fan of the hard-won happy ending. I'm going to distinguish happy from fluffy here--I could pick any number of my one-shorts for fluffiest ending--and say The Landing, because relative to what comes before, and also canon, it's an incredibly happy and optimistic ending for Maine.
8. do you get hate on fics?
Rarely. The vast majority of my readers are perfectly sweet and kind. For some reason, my Mainelina fic has drawn the most bad commenters out of any. I wouldn't call those comments hate, but I have gotten a few that were pretty rude and/or backhanded. My guess is that I hit a particular unfulfilled niche with a long Maine-POV fic that happened to appeal to a particular kind of RvB fan, a kind who like Maine and like the fic but also felt the need to like, flex on me about it. Most of them have seemed not overly familiar with fandom etiquette and transformative fandom culture in general. Embarrassing for them tbh. I just ignore or delete them.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Whatever kind I feel like! Less in recent years perhaps, but that's less a lack of interest and more that I get bored easily if I feel like I'm writing something repetitive, and writing non-repetitive smut can be genuinely challenging! We only have so many words, descriptors, euphemisms, and slang terms that actually sound appealing when you're trying to write erotica, so I think writing good smut requires no small amount of creativity and resourcefulness, and I always admire those who do it well.
Bondage is a theme I've explored repeatedly. I would say that I enjoy writing established relationship smut the most because it can be assumed that the characters already know each other's likes and dislikes. But first-times can be fun too. I think I most enjoy writing smut between characters who trust each other and have a high level of emotional intimacy, whatever the specific activities involved might be.
10. do you write crossovers? whatâs the craziest one youâve written?
To be honest I'm just not really a crossover person. I can find the idea of a crossover interesting, but at the end of the day I just don't enjoy transplanting characters out of their home setting as much as I enjoy exploring who they are within that setting and how it's shaped them.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes. I had a kink meme fill straight up plagiarized once, very obviously, such that when I took it to the mods it was an open and shut takedown.
I've also had less cut and dry incidents, and those are much harder to know how to deal with. I have had people basically rewrite a scene that I wrote, using pieces of the same dialogue, almost as if they thought we were both interpreting a scene from canon when we were not, it was something that I had made up. And yet it's not really plagiarism strictly speaking, and it wasn't worth the social fallout of calling them out on it, so I never did more than grumble vaguely about what happened. I've also had things where like... I ran across something pretty distinctly inspired by a fic of mine that I know the author had read, without bothering to give me a shoutout. That's not theft, but it is a bummer.
In every such case if the author had just asked me, "Hey, can I borrow your idea here? Can I post a remix of your fic?" I probably would have said yes without hesitation. Hell, even if they had not asked and simply given me a shoutout in their author's notes, I would have been pleased to have inspired them. But they didn't do that, and there's nothing I can do about it but I am going to be cranky about it.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
I did have someone ask about translating a fic of mine once, and I gave permission, but I never heard back after that, so I don't know if they ever did. (This is something I have blanket permission for, by the way, so long as you let me know about it!)
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
Sort of? A friend and I did post a polished-up RP as a fic once, though we ended up not keeping it up. In general I think I'm a pretty solitary writer, though I wouldn't rule it out entirely, but I'd have to really feel that both my style and my writing process meshed well with my collaborator.
14. whatâs your all-time favorite ship?
I'm too much of a multi-shipper to have a real answer to this.
15. whatâs a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
If I want on any level to finish it, then I consider it still on the table. It might take me years to get back to it, but I still mean to. I still want to finish Small Blessings. I still want to finish Radio Silence. I trust that their time will come, even if it's not now.
16. what are your writing strengths?
Character voice, I think. Both dialogue, and getting inside a character's head and writing a plausible inner monologue.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Combat, always combat and action scenes, though I do think I'm getting better with practice.
Selfishness. As soon as I need to write something as an obligation to someone else, I don't want to do it, which is why I'd make a terrible professional writer, at least one who has to write to order.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Just write it. You don't have to italicize it or put some kind of indicator marks around it. Language is language. I think it's fine to post translations as a footnote but I don't think it's 100% necessary all the time, when it's something the reader can easily look up for themselves. I know I'm willing to do that kind of legwork for a fic I'm enjoying. I suppose it depends on the reader, and what kind of reader you want.
There are also times when it's perfectly fine to just write it in English (or the default language of the piece) while indicating in the narrative that the character is actually speaking in another language, such as ASL. Again I don't think you need to italicize or use some kind of weird formatting. Just write "He signed," and what he said in quotes like you would any other dialogue. If you've firmly established already that a character primarily speaks in ASL, you might not even need that. The reader can keep up.
Things do shift a bit when you're writing in a fictional language, especially one that's very incomplete and not a true conlang. I'll go with the obvious example of Dragon Age's Elvish (and yes, canonically the language is called Elvish or Elven, it's not called Elvhen, that's the people, not the language). Even if I string the appropriate words together, the meaning might not always be strictly clear to the reader out of context because Elvish is a pretty simple cipher. It doesn't have conjugation, for example. Nonetheless, I think often context clues can be enough for an engaged reader, especially if it's a word we encounter a lot in canon. Where it might not be clear, and if it's very important to the story, I will usually simply work some kind of translation into the narrative itself. This can work particularly well when your POV character also has it as a second language. Example from my Briala/f!Tabris draft:
Gheyna and Cammen, having finished tending to the halla, stood aside, hand in hand, and Gheyna waved. "Dareth shiral, Keeper. Talith, Briala, dareth shiral. Sylaise ma ghilana vhenas." Cammen added solemnly, "Dareth shiral, Talith. Elgar'nan ma ghilana, lasa mala enasalin." At that, Talith's expression grew solemn as well. "Ma serannas, lethallen. Dareth shiral." Briala recognized a few words. Dareth shiral, "Safe journey." Vhenas, enasalin. And the names of the elven gods. Gheyna had bid the Hearthkeeper guide them safely home.
I personally prefer to stick to what we have in canon for Elvish (I'm not going to set myself up to be jossed if I don't have to), or if I ever really need an unknown word I'll make something up for myself. While there are some fanmade Elvish dictionaries out there, I'm not comfortable hanging too much of my own work on someone else's fanon, and also I inevitably disagree with some of their decisions on ambiguous canon words. (Ma does not mean "my," it means "you." This is consistent with every canon use of "ma" except one, and that one is in DA2 and is thus really, really likely to have been an oversight due to rushed development; every other instance of "ma" supports it meaning "you." Sorry, that has been eating at me for ages and I needed to get it off my chest. đ
) That said there are multiple fanmade Elvish dictionaries out there at this point, so if you're going to use someone else's, in this case I would strongly recommend supplying the reader with a link, both to credit the author and so the reader knows where to go to look up the words if they choose to. Don't assume that everyone knows you're using so-and-so's Elvish dictionary; I had never even heard of the big popular one until a couple years ago.
That was a lot, but at the end of the day, it's all about making a judgment call on how much you need to hold the reader's hand, as with anything; I personally tend to err on the side of trusting my reader, and if I assumed too much, well, maybe that's my mistake and maybe that reader wasn't my target audience anyway. đ¤ˇđťââď¸ You'll figure out what's right for your work.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
The first fandom I wrote for was actually Dragon Age, but that early writing never saw the light of day. First fandom I posted fic for was Fallout.
20. favorite fic youâve ever written?
OH MAN. That's hard! I referenced The Drop, my Mainelina trilogy for RvB, multiple times in this post so obviously I'm still pretty fond of it. I'll add to that Inroads, my Kimbalina series. For Fallout, I'm real happy with Home Front (Amata/F!LW) and Cast Your Bread Upon the Water (Dr. Li/Star Paladin Cross, past Dr. Li/Catherine/James). And for Dragon Age, my current faves are No Woman Rules Alone (Anora/F!Tabris) and A Pot to Piss In (Sera backstory fic).
