Good morning! The rune for this week is Wunjo again.

Wunjo is the rune of joy, accomplishment, celebration, harmony, and prosperity. So after Perthro reversed last week, we'll be moving into a more harmonious time when the outcomes are more likely to fall in our favor. This will include improvement in your interactions with those around you. Some of you will have a reason to celebrate some time in the next seven days (this would be in addition to Beltane, if you are celebrating this week -- this will be more personal and will more directly have to do with you), like an accomplishment of yours or someone close to you or a more harmonious shift in a current situation.

Also, some of you are anticipating a difficult week or are facing some major obstacles this week, remember to celebrate those times you experience joy amidst the turmoil. And spend some time doing something that brings you joy this week.

Runecasting

I started runecasting yesterday. I am a sceptic. I fundamentally do not believe in magic, chance or luck. I have a deep and abiding (see: autistic) love of Norse religion, and am therefore historically and theologically interested in the meanings given to them, but I do not think that the runes intrinsically mean anything. The runes that I draw from my bag are arbitrary, random chance. Their true meaning is that which are attributing to them - the thoughts and feelings that those having a reading taken attribute to them. How someone responds to chance, the things in their life that they draw connections to, that is the heart of runes.  

But I have immediately understood that those who have sought readings from me do understand runes in this way. They think that they have inherent power, meaning, gravitas. They are more inclined to the spiritual, to magic, than I am. This puts me in an interesting position - I have a powerful and potentially hopeful influence over how others interpret them. I have the capacity to offer hope, meaning and direction, or conflict, despair and the confusion. As a humanist, my natural instinct is to make life easier. To offer succour, to let people know that they are on the right path, that their optimism and warmth will be rewarded. So far I have been fortunate; I have not had any readings or anecdotes that have made me feel like such a reading was unwarranted, or irresponsible. But I have already come across the issues that may make such a reading impossible; rape, mental illness, domestic violence. I have come to realise, very quickly, that runecastings put me in a position adjacent to a psychiatrist. This is unsurprising to me, as several oracles have told me this. But castees tell me things about themselves that are not just personal, but private. They want to connect with the runes and will reveal their hearts in the process. They are emotionally raw. I experience emotional honestly that I usually only associate with my trans & neurodivergent peers. I feel like my readings have already made me connect more intimately with people I might never have engaged with otherwise. I have come to know things about people's lives, and in the knowing I have come to root for them. To hope that they have the strength and courage to make it through their trials and forge a brighter path ahead. I am more inclined to make jera a rune of new efforts paying off for the better, rather than reaping more of the status quo. Isa is a rune of rest rather than a rune of stagnation. I have emotional power and weight among who seek readings, and that gives me responsibility. I love human beings. When it comes to magic, they will always be my first priority. Magic isn't real, but human connection to it is. So I will take my practice seriously.  Some day isa will be a sign of stagnation in the worst way, of little else but dreams of spring, because my castee will need to hear it, but today it is rest. Today it just means being human. I don't know where runecastings will take me, beyond that I am already deeply invested in them. Casting makes me feel self actualised, like I am making good use of my capacities. It feels natural and fluid to me, but has had real meaning to those I have cast for. My knowledge of the runes now feels amateurish, but I know that my practice will deepen my understandings of them, and that my ability to help people will only grow with time. I started runecasting yesterday. It is already a part of me.

Sigginstown Pottage

One of the most basic dishes of the medieval period - and in any culture, pretty much - is the pottage. This is basically "stuff cooked in a pot with water", which is a very broad definition. This particular "recipe" is one that I think is straightforward enough, uses common enough ingredients, and is palatable enough that it was almost certainly made in pre-Norman Ireland (by statistical inevitability, if nothing else). I've given it the name of "Sigginstown Pottage" because I first made it at Sigginstown Castle, and it's useful to have a name by which to refer to it.

1 smoked pale ham, chopped into 1cm cubes 2 onions, chopped (or some celery, also chopped) 2 leeks, roughly chopped 6 carrots, roughly chopped c. 500g pearl barley, bulgur wheat, or other likely whole grain Water to cover

Put everything above into a pot, and simmer until the meat and grains are cooked. Taste and season with some black pepper if needed. Serve hot.

Some observations: Onion is the more "authentic" between it and celery, but both were available. I've been going easy on onions lately due to food sensitivities. Leeks are absolutely a period Irish food, and possibly close to a staple; they're mentioned a fair bit in texts.

The pale ham (I don't know if this is known outside Ireland; it's a small chunk of cured ham, which is pretty salty) provides enough salt that you shouldn't need to add any more. The smoking is pretty solidly attested in period by the number of bones we see with holes for hooks.

You'll see some people claiming that carrots only arrived in Ireland with the Normans, but there are carrot seeds in the archaeobotanic remnants from Viking Dublin, and there's an old Irish word, meacon, which denotes tap-rooted vegetables like parsnips and carrots, but is usually used for carrots. So I'm pretty confident in including these.

The end result is a very solid, stick-to-the-ribs kind of stew; good eating for colder weather or when you've been doing physical work. I've only ever cooked it in cast iron, and it turns out that if you leave the leftovers in the pot overnight, the combination of whole grains and iron results in a horrifically grey stuff, which still tastes fine, but looks absolutely awful. So eat it hot, and don't leave leftovers.

Hello friends! Today I have a rune reading for you.

Today's reading focuses around annual cycles that wish to come to a close so that a new cycle can begin. Unfortunately though we are being warned of delays, while we wish for this transition to hurry along, it appears we are being hit with obstacles that are disrupting its path. There's a warning here too that the delays in play could be causing ill health or friction within our relationships. Be aware that while we very well might be frustrated with how slow things are going, those we love are likely struggling too. With this in mind examine your own behaviour and make sure you're not acting unfairly, but also at the same time, if you are being treated unfairly these behaviours need to be addressed in a mature manner. Delays are delays, there's nothing much to be done, there's no point in being shitty about it. Sometimes all we can ask of ourselves and others is to do our best. Try not to make the situation any worse than it needs to be, do things when you can, and look after one another.
