Plot: The last of the Cathars, a young woman fears she is cursed to bring death down upon anyone she loves.

Review: Though its performances are solid and its sets are beautiful, this film becomes entangled in its own plot threads and lofty ideas, promising a thrilling climax that never arrives.

Story: 2.5/5 - Initially compelling, but fails to deliver, laying the stage for conflicts that never occur. From adultery to mysticism, nothing is concluded, as if the writers confused themselves and threw up their hands.

Performances: 4/5 - Holt is tragic as Sylvie and Delmont is great as a scholar teetering on obsession. Richard-Willm, however, fails to bring much depth to what should have been a conflicted character.

Cinematography: 4/5 - Often striking. Beautiful lighting and wide shots.

Editing: 3.5/5 - Employed really well at one point to induce irony.

Music: 3.5/5 - Solid eerie chanting.

Choreography & Stunts: 3.5/5

Effects & Props: 3.5/5 - Some decent wound and gunshot effects. A few of the old books look cartoonish, though.

Sets: 4.5/5 - The highlight of the film. I cannot stress enough how lovely some of the castle's rooms and caverns look.

Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3/5 - More effort should have been put into making Sylvia look younger in her flashback.

This was more Ophilia’s territory, all the grief counseling and emotional navigation and reminding people that their lives had worth or whatever. But she wasn’t here, was she? She was asleep in her bed at the inn after fighting a huge fuckoff wolf, and Therion was here, using nothing but his bare teeth to pry off the lid that Alfyn had bolted onto himself. Roles reversed, sitting on opposite sides of the table. Miserable. Something had to give. They couldn’t wallow in this melancholy forever.

Wherein Therion reflects on the fight with Miguel and shows Alfyn a card trick.

When Walter Wanger decided to remake Pépé le Moko in 1938 as Algiers (John Cromwell), he tried to buy up all the existing copies of the French film and destroy them. Fortunately, he didn't succeed, but it's easy to see why he made the effort: As fine an actor as Charles Boyer was, he could never capture the combination of thuggishness and charm that Jean Gabin displays in the role of Pépé, a thief living in the labyrinth of the Casbah in Algiers. It's one of the definitive film performances, an inspiration for, among many others, Humphrey Bogart's Rick in Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1943). The story, based on a novel by Henri La Barthe, who collaborated with Duvivier on the screenplay, is pure romantic hokum, but done with the kind of commitment on the part of everyone involved that raises hokum to the level of art. Gabin makes us believe that Pépé would give up the security of a life where the flics can't touch him, all out of love for the chic Gaby (Mireille Balin), the mistress of a wealthy man vacationing in Algiers. He is also drawn out of his hiding place in the Casbah by a nostalgia for Paris, which Gaby elicits from him in a memorable scene in which they recall the places they once knew. Gabin and Balin are surrounded by a marvelous supporting cast of thieves and spies and informers, including Line Noro as Pépé's Algerian mistress, Inès, and the invaluable Marcel Dalio as L'Arbi.

[Background]

Legionnaire of the Xth Legion, Meinrad undertook a mostly standard service time within the Warbringers Legion after his recruitment from one of the claimed worlds of the Imperium, Noros himself openly volunteering with others of his city. 

He found particular affinity with close assault and was assigned among the Despoiler Squads of the Company. He later earned promotion to squad Sergeant before later elevated to the Company's 2nd Lieutenant. It was suggested by higher ranking officers for him to see service with other forces before possible induction into the Legion's House Guard, but such actions had not been able to take place prior to his dimensional relocation. 

During a joint deployment with the IVth Legion 'Court of Seasons', legion formations were deployed against eldar protecting the Temple of Alieathee which was notable for the perfect orbit of astrological bodies within the system. 

Amidst the crossfire in the main chamber of the temple, Menraad was struck by lighting arching from the artefact as it destabilised. In a flash the marine found himself on a world unknown with no sign of the Eldar or his fellow legionaries in sight.

It took a few months to fully realise where he ended up but discovered he was in a later era to the one he left. Eventually too finding that he had come from an alternative universe to the one he was in now. His brothers of the Xth Legion replaced instead by the Chapters of Ferrus' Sons. Lacking a clear indication on where he could consider a home, he has become what could best be described as a drifter. Travelling world to world and leveraging his potential to muster resources to keep himself going.

While lacking the same comradery or kinship he felt among the Legion, he has been doing what he can to improve the worlds he resides on. Even his presence as an astarte is surprisingly effective at improving moral, even if the faithful around him disturbs him.

Noro is a talking king cobra who is very aware of threats to the system and is not afraid of taking action against them. Ne can act intimidating sometimes and therefore be a bit of a persecutor, but ne listens to headmates who tell nem that ne is going overboard. Noro has tendencies towards both anger and dissociation, but they are good at managing these with grounding exercises and self-distractions. It is good at helping other headmates cope with their emotions and symptoms similarly.
