Un pezzetto di tecnologia dentro le modernissime reti 5G risale a oltre mezzo secolo fa e alla passione per il surf di un giovane professore di informatica particolarmente sportivo e innamorato dei panorami mozzafiato (e delle onde) hawaiani. Norman Abramson, scomparso lo scorso dicembre a 88 anni, era nato a Boston. Nella fredda città americana aveva studiato e iniziato a muovere i primi passi nel mondo accademico, prima di trasferirsi all’Università di San Francisco e, infine, alle Hawaii. Nel 1966 Abramson ottenne, infatti, la cattedra all’Università di Ohau dove insieme con Frank Kuo, proveniente dai Bell Labs, ed altri si mise a studiare una soluzione per il problema fondamentale dell’arcipelago: trasmettere dati via radio tra le scuole sparse nelle varie isole. In poco tempo i due misero assieme una soluzione versatile e potente usando materiali radio a basso costo: ALOHAnet.

Semplice è meglio

La loro idea era tanto semplice quanto ingegnosa e ancora oggi è alla base della trasmissione dei dati con il Wi-Fi, via satellite e con i telefoni cellulari. La tecnologia di ALOHAnet consente a più apparecchi di trasmette e di ricevere dei dati attraverso un unico canale condiviso usando radio a bassa potenza e senza un’elettronica complessa. Il vero punto di forza, infatti, sta nella semplicità della soluzione: se un pacchetto di dati non veniva ricevuto, l’emittente semplicemente lo inviava di nuovo. Questo ha consentito di spedire più pacchetti di dati in maniera efficiente, mentre la regola nelle apparecchiature complesse delle telecomunicazioni dell’epoca voleva che le trasmissioni fossero un susseguirsi di sessioni continue ed esclusive, che dovevano correggere in tempo reale gli errori di ricezione.

Un lavoro innovativo

Il lavoro di Abramson e dei suoi divenne il punto di riferimento anche per i giovani ricercatori che proprio in quegli anni stavano costruendo Internet negli Stati Uniti continentali. Secondo Vinton Cerf, che con Robert Kahn in quegli anni ha creato gli standard tecnici per collegare tra di loro i computer attraverso la rete Internet con i protocolli TCP/IP, “La soluzione di Abramason fu un’indea incredibilmente audace, una pensata originale dal punto di vista tecnico”. Buona parte delle modalità e logiche di funzionamento di ALOHAnet divennero così lo standard per le reti senza fili di oggi (e non solo). Tanto che nella progettazione delle reti 5G i ricercatori di Qualcomm, Ericsson, Huawei e delle altre aziende coinvolte continuano a usare il lavoro di Abramson.

Open Source

Il segreto del successo di ALOHAnet lo spiegò lo stesso Abramson alcuni anni fa: “Non brevettammo ALOHA ma decidemmo invece di pubblicarne il lavoro di ricerca: lasciammo cioè la tecnologia ‘libera’. Per me era la scelta ideale: ero troppo concentrato a fare surf per volermi occupare di brevetti e cose del genere.”

Ethernet la figlia di ALOHAnet

La rete ALOHAnet venne studiata anche da Bob Metcalfe, all’epoca giovane ricercatore neolaureato, che si recò alle Hawaii per lavorare con il professor Abramson. Metcalfe poi decise di mettere a frutto quanto imparato sulla trasmissione dei dati via radio in un ambiente completamente diverso: le reti via cavo.
