I don't remember anything in the show implying she was sapphic or into Ibrahim (or like another person said in the tags that she had a kid with someone too)

Of course! Thanks for asking. Here’s my attempt at an explanation:

In 2016, during a panel Q&A at Long Island Doctor Who, Jemma Redgrave said that when she first started doing the show, she headcanoned Kate as being married to a woman. At some point in her answer, she alludes to the fact that this may or may not be the case anymore, as she often learns new details about Kate’s life from the showrunners whenever she films another episode. (Jemma's answer starts at 44:54 here.)

Regardless, her initial headcanon has caught on, either as a bit of wishful thinking or as a detail that some perceive to be almost canon in the absence of contradictory evidence on the show or in other materials (i.e. the UNIT audios). In the series 18 episode “Death in Heaven,” Kate described herself as a “mother of two” and “divorcee,” and a popular interpretation of this is that Kate may have been married to a man, and divorced him after (or before) realizing she was a lesbian.

The “almost canon” perspective also holds a lot of weight among some fans of the show because of Jemma Redgrave’s long history of playing queer and queer-coded characters. Even her most ostensibly straight characters tend to offer some sort of challenge to compulsory heterosexuality or patriarchal norms (i.e. they turn to violence after spending years in loveless heterosexual marriages). This has made it very easy to headcanon pretty much any character she’s played as queer. I think some fans tend to also think that Jemma has more influence over her characters than she does - for example, after seeing episodes of DW in which Kate has worn plaid or flannel, fans have suggested that Jemma probably provided her own wardrobe for the show and purposely selected those items to give off gay vibes. (A very niche issue that has contributed to this is Jemma’s habit of repeatedly purchasing her characters’ wardrobe items at half price and then wearing them in real life - in the past, some fans incorrectly assumed that this meant Jemma was bringing her own clothing to set and asking the costume designers if Kate could wear it.) Effectively, many fans have hoped that Jemma’s earlier headcanon for Kate effectively manifested into canon over time, or potentially inspired the showrunners to agree that Kate is queer.

In terms of the Ibrahim stuff, the first piece was a lot of fans noticing that the hand-holding between Kate and Ibrahim in this week’s finale lasted a few seconds longer than one might expect a platonic hand-hold to last. Similarly, some have thought that the moment when she comes back to life and he pulls her up has a certain closeness or intimacy to it. From what I’ve seen, people are split on the topic - some people consider it to be a platonic “happy to be alive” moment, or a show of feelings from Ibrahim that Kate might not reciprocate; others have theorized that Ibrahim and Kate have a very close platonic relationship for some reason, etc.

Shortly after the finale aired, a version of the episode with a cast and crew audio commentary was released on the BBC’s website. In this commentary, while the two aforementioned scenes are playing, the producer, Vicki Delow, makes some comments suggesting she thinks that Kate and Ibrahim are, or should be, a couple. RTD responds to her comments in what sounds like a teasing tone. Here’s my transcript of those moments:

Helping Kate up scene (36:50) Vicki: “I love this. This is my favorite thing in the whole world." RTD: "What, these two?" Vicki: "These two. I just love them.” RTD: “What do you mean, Vicki?” Vicki: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” RTD: “What do you mean? You think they’re friends?” Vicki: “I think they’re more than friends.”

Hand-holding scene outside (37:43) Vicki: “Look, look, look. This is it. Look, look, look.” RTD: “What are you looking at, Vicki Delow?” Vicki: “I love them. I love them.” RTD: “I don’t know what you mean, Vicki. I don't know.” Vicki: “It’s the greatest romance.”

Some folks have interpreted this as Vicki Delow hinting that there’s going to be a future romance between the characters in series 2 - and that RTD is egging her on - i.e. the “I don’t know what you mean” is a wink nudge way of him refusing to directly confirm a future storyline. That’s definitely a possibility. I think it’s also possible that Vicki just really wants them to be a couple, and has gotten a reputation on the production team as a hopeful shipper who wants Kate and Ibrahim to wind up together. In that context, RTD’s teasing her might have a vibe more like “oh Vicki, here you go again, shipping Kate and Ibrahim.”

So basically, a number of fans who have taken Jemma’s past headcanon as canon-adjacent have interpreted Vicki Delow’s “it’s the greatest romance” comment as confirmation that Kate and Ibrahim will have a romantic storyline in the next series, and have posted on social media (mostly Twitter, but a bit on Tumblr) criticizing what they perceive to be the show taking an unexpected position on Kate’s sexual orientation.

The rest might be stuff you’ve already seen, but I’ll summarize just in case: Several of the posts on Twitter and Tumblr have used language that inflexibly imply a gay/straight binary - i.e. “how dare they make Kate straight, she’s a lesbian” - not allowing for the possibility that she’s a bisexual woman to enter into the equation at all. In my other post on this subject I referred to a pattern of bi erasure and biphobia in the Jemma Redgrave fandom. As someone who’s an active member of that fandom, it felt like a concrete instance of some things I’ve seen pretty regularly in the community - and although I’m not as familiar with the DW fandom more generally, it sounds like there may have been some similar past instances of bi erasure or microaggressions in that fandom.

While I’ve categorized the “how dare they make her straight” posts specifically as bi erasure (and I imagine one could make a case that they’re biphobic too), the clear instance of biphobia for me has been in the comments I’ve seen by viewers who said that they would rather pretend Kate died at the start of the episode than accept the presence of a scene where she held hands with a man. In my mind, even as a joke, that seems to imply “better dead than bi or straight.”

I don't know if I'm decided on what Vicki Delow meant, and the lingering in that hand-holding moment definitely did make me wonder. And as someone who loves Jemma's performances as queer characters and has read my share of Osgate fic, I think it would be awesome to see her character in a relationship with a woman. But at this point I feel like the conversation has been so saturated by others' moments of bi erasure that it's hard to even know how to get back into it.

So, yeah. You're not wrong - even for someone who knows a lot of the pieces, it's been a very confusing couple of days. 😅

I've been thinking a bit about Kids These Days and why they are Like That. This might be an Old woman yells at clouds thing, but I dont think so.

We millennials were the first generation to grow up online. Depending on how old you are and when you got access to the internet it might differ, but for many of us the internet was an early escape from a boring or not great reality.

We were the first generation to be kids online, when the internet still was a place for nerdy adults. The internet was dangerous for us, stranger danger was real. We learned (either from informed adults or because of our own mistakes) to not give any personal information or trust anyone. The image that anyone you talk to could be an old pervy man in a basement was very much real, because that was who our parents thought the average internet user was. Many of us never used our real names online until Facebook came along and changed the game completely, before that anonymity was the norm.

10 years ago there was a prevalent nerd culture online, meaning that most communities or forums was still mainly populated by nerdy guys. They had (have...) a certain jargon and humor based on being outcasts of their irl environment. The memes of that time was trollcomics, Bad Luck Brian, Socially Awkward Penguin, non mainstream pop culture references. It was based on superiority and elevating themselves by punching down. It lead to an online culture of racism, misogyny and homophobia in so many online spaces. If you found my old username on some forum you would probably find some shitty things, because I wanted to fit in. It wasn't safe to be anything but a straight white man online unless you created your own space.

But the internet isn't new anymore, it has become a lot more accessible and widespread and the majority of people depend on the internet daily. You can't see the internet as dangerous because you have to use it every single day. And I think that's why so many of the warnings about it feels either unnecessary or out of touch to younger people. They don't see the internet as a lawless wild west, it's their backyard where everything should be and is nice and safe.

The past 5 years or so there has been a lot of progress in online spaces, where racism, misogyny, queerphobia etc is less and less tolerated. And not without a fight, real people have had their lives destroyed because of the online hate campaigns (see gamergate). If you stood up for feminism you would get death threats. It still happens, but the internet is in general a much nicer place now than it was 10 years ago.

The younger people don't know that. They haven't seen the foul hate that was commonplace in every single comment thread. But they have grown into the backlash of that, where social justice is very widespread and seen as a virtue. Which is good! We should stand up for what's right! But the kids will often misdirect this energy towards undeserving people.

They will go after someone who said something problematic in 2008, without having any clue about what the culture was like then. They will shout "think of the children" without acknowledging that there are now measures in place to protect children (like age restrictions, tags, mute functions). They will claim someone as problematic because of one small misunderstanding rather than going after actual racists, because they feel it's the easier target. And it makes them feel good and like they've accomplished something. We chased off another person from the internet because we didn't like the particular thing they did, cheers all around.

Meanwhile, in the other corner of the internet, where the nerdy bro jargon has lived on and festered from feeling attacked for a decade, bigotry has grown so strong that we get mass murders in the name of a gaming youtuber and people storming the capitol. They should be the real enemy but no, the younger generation know that regular people have a conscience and are easier targets.

My point is that the modern purity culture on the rise among young people is the backside of the social justice coin. When you don't see the actual threat and just the weapon, you end up fighting the wrong people.

I have no solution for this. I just think that it's important to talk about the full context in which different generation of internet users grew up, and do our best to share our experiences.

not my bf saying he hasnt heard anyone mention tumblr in yrs and i'm on a dying ship. im going down with it but pls dont make it soon guys. i do NOT want to go to ig and twitter for pictures ;-; its not the same. this is the only unique place left that has no value for social media influencers which is ironic bc tumblr made a lot of them (if u knew back then) like therealkimj etc but god its all we have left for content creators to share their art and fics in a collective place *sigh*

I mean, tumblr isn’t exactly on an average internet consumer’s radar. I feel like you’ve had to know about tumblr at some point, tbh- like not everyone knows what discord is. (totally different case tho) If (and when) tumblr goes down, say a couple years, I hope something new would take place. Because I agree, there’s no way in hell that I’m ever moving to ig/twitter. With Tumblr and AO3′s tagging system, I can never look back at other sites.

I was just watching a ProZD video the other day and he had to explain that he originally got his start on tumblr and I hadn’t realized a lot of people didn’t know. In fact, a lot of things started on tumblr (certain memes like the dress). 

If I want to find art, I can just search through the art tags. Twitter...well, you have to search through someone’s tweets to find anything. I get why a lot of people moved, but it’s not exactly the best place for art. I always wished there was an AO3-equilivent for a fandom site; eg livejournal. 

I still look at tumblr as more of a blogging site, and primarily I use it for fandom. I had my taste of twitter and ig a few years back and I tried to like it, I really did, but I quickly learned that it was very draining and I had to nope out. Lol, remember snapchat? Now that’s an app I feel like no one uses anymore.  

No doubt this hellsite has problems, it always has, but I really don’t want to see it come to an end, if possible. Neither do I want to see the end of AO3 or discord. I have my favorite sites and I refuse to cave into the norm lol

I don’t think so. My real name is in chinese and it loosely translates to “time and universe”. It’s also different to my older bro’s name by just one letter.

I don’t cry a lot, usually cos i know of ways to keep myself positive and one of them is talking to my partner. But i did cry at like last friday due to some personal stuff.

How I Run My Blog

SPEED: molasses. seriously though. my work schedule is hella hectic and i ALWAYS have a queue line of replies and whatnot to be posted during the week. So, if you EVER think I have not replied to you---I did. It is just in my queue to be honest. 

REPLIES: i am not really too picky. as long as people actually read and follow my rules about not godmodding or certain subjects or call out posts then i am fine. i will do one liners, para,multi para, etc; the only thing i ask is that if we continue a meme that it gets moved to a new post.

STARTERS: i can write them if we have a meaty plot discussion. outside of that i often find random starters fall through. i am more than happy to write random starters though--especially when i make a post asking you to like for one. outside of that I am MUCH faster getting to replies haha. starters usually get written on one of my two days off during the week which varies depending on my swing schedule.

INBOX: open for in character or anon. i prefer OOC chat and plot discussion to go through my IM. it’s easier to keep track of.

SELECTIVITY: i’m not really. as long as you are not a real life blog, a porn blog, or have been inactive for hella forever then i’ll more than likely follow back. anime shows are really the only thing i feel slightly uncomfortable roleplaying with--only because i really dont read or watch them too often. but if you have an awesome plot for one of my characters and you are an anime blog then just shoot me a message.

WISHLIST: i don’t really have a wishlist per say but if you see me post something and it is tagged as such then go for it.

Humm I do have 3 pets already [2 dogs and a cat. The female dog is called crystal. 3) You can now slide into any job you want, which job are you going to pick?

I’d probably pick being a super successfull illustrator OR archaeologist. I just love history so much. It fascinates me that we step on the same land as so many other people hundreds of years ago.

4) Would you rather deal with extreme heat or snow and sleet?

Ok now. The norm around here is 35ºc so I’d say extreme heat. Because with cold [like, y’know, 25ºc or less 8′’’D] I become a cat and can’t do a thing for the life of me so if movies are correct I’d probably die in my sleep lmao

5) Whats your favorite aspect of your personality?

Is probably the one who people hate the most: the fact that I always seek debate/knowledge/conversation through questions. So while some people might think I am attacking them because I question them or what they say, I am actually actively trying to learn and think about my own stuff by learning other’s points of view so I can get to any sort of conclusion on a subject XD 

6) What is your fallback food when eating at a new place?

I..I dunno. Probably chinese o-o

7) Are you a “Have a million friends” kind of person, a few close friends kind of person, or a lone wolf?

I have very few close friends. In fact, I have exactly 10 close friends. On the other hand, I have a ton of people that I deeply care about. But it’s not that I do not like everyone! Just that friendship to me is something quite deep and that is very hard to aquire, specially because I feel like an outsider 9 out of 10 times when I am with anyone.

8) You’ve gotta go toe to toe with a mythical creature. You’ll survive (probably) but it’s gonna be close. What creature do you want it to be to look as badass as possible?

I want it to be a dragon. Daaamn fine creatures they are!

9) What is the number one culture you wish you knew more about?

OOOH the culture of India! I feel like India is so rich and full of things to learn!

10) Do you prefer to do hard annoying things yourself to avoid spending money, or are you of the mind that you work hard to have money so you dont have to do stuff like that (a good example is paying Movers when changing houses)

I’d say it depends on the annoying thing. While I do think having money is nice to avoid some of these stuff, I don’t think they’re all worth enough to pay for someone else to do them for me. So if, say, I had to move, I’d sure pay Movers because it’s such a difficult job for me, but if it’s something I could do on my own then I’d probably just do it myself XD

11) You can have one make believe weapon (Keyblade, Master Sword, Lightsaber, Excalibur, etc.) what do you wield?

abt your latest post about us whites in europe: we don't experience racism due to our pale color (though darker skinned people sometimes get lumped w poc), we experience xenophobia, or jewish people like me can experience antisemitism (esp jews w darker skin)

if this is about my tags (#i am. so done. with americans shaming europeans #who look white but dont call themselves white) then i never said ppl experience racism for their shades of white.

there are many different types of racism in europe, and i already know about some firsthand (discrimination and mockery based on my name or whats written on my ID aka birth place), & seen my friends be discriminated for other things too (their names, their skin color, their religion) -- so the fact that i only ranted about the skin color in my tags has nothing to do with being unaware of what you just talked about. cus i am aware. i don’t think anyone living in europe, even the british or french or belgian or scandinavian whites don’t know about the xenophobia/racism in europe. not cus they experienced it, but cus they’ve studied it or seen people being victim to it.

but basically i was referring to the way americans keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep shaming europeans for calling themselves ‘non white’ (or whatever is the exact term they use, i think they just list their origins aka “im not white im spanish and irish”) and refusing to be compared with the white that america seems to think is a “white european norm” or something??? & comparing it to their own black, asian, etc populations. cus “bashing” those people isn’t funny. it’s not a meme. that’s disrespectful to decide to call someone something they fucking told you they’re not. they are not white. we don’t perceive them as white at all. you don’t know our societies. stop talking.

i think the 567898765 books about ww2 and modern antisemitism/neo-nazism did their job driving that horrible reality in my tiny head when i was in school, so if it can “reassure” you, i know about antisemitism. not firsthand but i’m aware it still exists and nobody learned anything from ww2 .__.
