This is a post a friend made on a different platform, asking people to copy+paste. I'm keeping the censored words censored, frankly because I'm lazy, even though I know tumblr works differently. Anyway, I think it's important:

Hi friends (in the USA)! Please call your representatives, especially the ones listed in this post, and ask them to vote NO on HR 9495. As you know, I usually shy away from legislative and electoral politics. This one is really important, though, and has a huge impact on ALL kinds of organizing.

Q: What is HR 9495?

A: HR 9495 would grant the executive branch of the United States the power to universally revoke the tax-exempt status of organizations (such as nonprofits, universities, and news outlets) by designating them as supporting t-rrorists. For many tax-exempt organizations, this would lead to shutdown. It would also give the Executive Branch more leverage over universities.

Q: But isn't t-rrorism bad?

A: The bill allows the revoking of tax-exempt status without due process. In other words, any organization that the executive branch decides it doesn't like could be designated as t-rrorist.

Q: Why does my Democratic representative support this?

A: Many Democrats support this because they've been on the receiving end of protest campaigns around their position on Palestine, or because they are sympathetic to the suppression of pro-Palestine protesters. If passed, this bill would give more leverage to suppress student speech at universities. For example, a university that has an official student group calling for ceasefire could be threatened with having its tax-exempt status revoked unless it shuts the student group down.

Q: I'm an anarchist/communist/socialist. Why should I call my representative? Isn't this some Eduard Bernstein shit? What's next, are you gonna tell me to join the DSA?

A: State repression sucks, and this bill is aimed specifically at reducing the ability to organize outside of electoral politics. In Atlanta, we've seen targeted attacks on nonprofits that support protesters, including the state of Georgia passing legislation banning bail funds! In other words, nonprofits can no longer bail out protesters whose bond is set at $650,000 in retaliation for protesting! This stuff is really bad and sometimes "by any means necessary" includes *shudder* calling your congressional representative.

In no particular order:

Peachtree Street NE. Closest to Ga State Aquarium, and where you’ll find the fabulous Fox Theatre! There is also a Sweet Hut on this street.

W Peachtree Street NE. You will likely use this to access Center For Puppetry Arts.

Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. I’m cheating a bit here as this is primarily in Norcross and becomes just Peachtree Boulevard after crossing the perimeter - I just think the name is funny due to the disparate images its component words bring to mind.

Peachtree Street SW. Access to The Masquerade, where sometimes there are Mystery Skulls concerts.

Peachtree Street. It’s just funny that this one gets to exist without any modifiers.

With the exception of Peachtree Industrial these are chosen based on landmark. Curiously there are no Peachtrees particularly close to Zoo Atlanta, Pullman Yards, Fernbank Science Center, or Truist Park. (Six Flags is actually in Austell, not Atlanta, and is on Six Flags Drive. As it should be.)

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Myles Bryant rejected the prosecution's plea deal before jury selection got underway Monday. He told the court he was ready to go to trial on murder charges in the death of 16-year-old Susana Morales.

Bryant is accused of kidnapping and killing Morales as she walked home from a friend's house in July 2022.

In the warrant application, officials allege that Bryant, who was working as a police officer at the time of Morales' death, lives close to where she was last reported on Windscape Village Lane in Norcross and dumped her naked body in the woods.

Police also accuse Bryant of falsely reporting that his vehicle had been broken into and that his gun was stolen.

Bryant claimed he left his truck door unlocked when the theft occurred, but Gwinnett County's police chief said his investigators found Bryant's handgun in the same wooded area on Drowning Creek Road where they found Morales's remains. 

During jury selection, one potential juror admitted serving on the jury would prove difficult, saying, "It's not like we are talking about a car accident or somebody steal a watch from a store.  It has long-lasting consequences, and it's a scary place to be, in one of those chairs."

If convicted, the former Doraville Police officer faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Bryant's attorneys asked the judge to declare a mistrial after one potential juror stated during questioning in open court that she had heard weird things about the defendant.  Bryant's attorney said those remarks prejudiced potential jurors.

The prosecution pushed back, telling the judge the woman's testimony would not negatively influence the jury pool.

After listening to both sides, the judge dismissed all 14 jurors who were in court during that testimony.

The trial resumes Tuesday.
