I Like Food

A lot of food posts recently, yes?

Quite a few months ago, Matt and I ventured into a bookshop. This probably happens almost every week, because bookshops are everywhere in Japan and I just love being in them. We found a magazine that had a primary objective of telling us all about shit-hot places to eat all over Tachikawa. “Say no more!” we said, as we threw our money over the counter at the staff.

Like most things, the magazine sat unused after we had looked at it once. Something beautiful we both noticed upon our first perusal, was that our favourite place for 二次会 or “second party”, Baseball, was in there. The entry included a picture of the friendly owner swinging a baseball bat and exclaiming that he loves sports. I would say that is not a lie, based on my experience.

Anyway, the magazine sat by the bed mostly unused until we wanted to get some ideas for our seven year anniversary on the 1st of December. We had planned to go to a cheese fondue place, that we actually found out about before looking in the magazine, but it did have an entry in there. 

Matt decided to check the ramen section of the magazine, and found a view high rated ramen places in Tachikawa that we had never ventured to. After double checking the ratings on Google, we were almost bag on, shoes on, out the door.

The cheese fondue place was full on our anniversary night and we are chumps and didn’t make a reservation. Instead, we went to a kushi katsu place. This is also known as “everything is on a skewer. Deep fry it at your own table and just have a bloody good old time doing it. We could never have these restaurants in Australia, because children would push their siblings’ faces into the hot oil and then their parents would try to sue the restaurant”.

This left Sunday open for a RAMEN ADVENTURE. We trekked to とと or “Toto”. The magazine entry only mentioned their shio ramen, so you can imagine our excitement when we got there and realised they also do miso!

The egg and chashuu were delicious and the broth, while not thick (our personal preference for miso), was full of flavour and was a really tasty time. The fish based nature of the broth allowed for some pretty impressive fish based burps a bit later on. 10/10 for sure. We also consumed gyoza, which I enjoyed the shape and taste of. Toto is a real winner, and I want to go back and try their tomato chicken ramen. 

Unfortunately, Matt beat me to making references to Toto’s Africa when referring to this ramen on Instagram. I say he beat me, but to be perfectly honest with you, I may never have reached that end goal myself.
