“I made this poster to support ongoing efforts to stop the Jordan Cove Liquefied Natural Gas terminal and Pembina pipeline, a fossil-fuel boondoggle that the people of southern Oregon and Northern California have been resisting for several years now. Rural people, Indigenous people, youth, elders and everyone who loves the land have maintained a spirited opposition to this terrible idea, and have won several important victories. Unfortunately the fight isn’t over until it’s over, and this is a reminder of that. In addition to this edition on nice paper, I made a big run of this print on cheaper paper for Rogue Climate to distribute in affected communities. Sales of this print will support more work like that. More information about the fight to stop the pipeline is available here.

In 84 days (12 weeks) from today, the Boat Harbour effluent treatment facility is required by statute to shut down. With no alternative system in place (or even being built) it is obvious that Northern Pulp has no intention of abiding by the 2015 Boat Harbour Act.

We can infer this because if the “Cessation of the Use of the Boat Harbour Effluent Treatment Facility for the Reception and Treatment of Effluent from the Northern Pulp Mill” (in the words of the Act) were going to take place, then, in the absence of a new system, the mill would have to shut down. If the mill were going to shut down, the Industry Closing Act requires three months advance notice be given to the Provincial Government.

No such notice has been given. In the words of the Industry Closing Act, “where an employer engaged in an industry is about to close down, discontinue or abandon the whole of the industry or any portion thereof which will or may affect fifty or more employees…he shall before the closing down…give notice thereof to the Minister.” No notice; no intention to close. The collective agreement in place at the mill and the Labour Standards Code require similar periods of notice to the workers. No notice; no intention to close.

So what will happen if the mill just defies the Boat Harbour Act and keeps on operating, using Boat Harbour for its effluent?

Pictou Landing First Nation Chief Andrea Paul quickly became emotional as she spoke to reporters following McNeil's announcement.

"It's been a long time coming," she said.

Paul said she's grateful to the premier and government, as well as her community.

"This has been a very challenging issue. I know it wasn't going to be easy for people around Nova Scotia, and I don't take that lightly."

The premier's decision is "a huge statement" when it comes to respecting Indigenous people and their struggles, she said, and sets an example for others to follow.

"We know that marginalized communities are the ones that definitely get hurt the most in terms of not being treated fairly. And I really commend this government for setting the precedent to make things right. I know this wasn't easy."

HALIFAX — Hollywood actor Ellen Page is doubling down on her criticism of a Nova Scotia pulp mill that wants to build an effluent pipeline into the ocean.

In a tweet this morning, the Halifax-born movie star said the provincial government must stop its “corporate welfare” for Northern Pulp, which Page said is “literally destroying the province.”

A Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge ruled at the end of November that the province must consult with the Pictou Landing First Nation on any funding of its effluent treatment facility.

Page has been waging a Twitter campaign against Northern Pulp for weeks, often retweeting criticism of the mill to her 1.4 million followers.

Last month, Page, who starred in “Inception,” “Juno,” “X-Men” and numerous other films, tweeted in support of author Joan Baxter’s book “The Mill: Fifty Years of Pulp and Protest,” which traces decades of criticism of the mill’s environmental impact.

The plan to dump treated effluent from the company’s Abercrombie, N.S., mill into the Northumberland Strait has raised the ire of fishermen and the P.E.I. government.

Last week, Northern Pulp said it’s taking legal action after fishermen blocked survey boats hired to examine a route for the proposed pipeline.
