Burn your bra!

That got your attention didn’t it!

Well, it might not be quite what you’re thinking; a trip back in time to the 60s might just make your feel hairy and saggy! I want to talk today about the symbolism of burning ones bra!

A friend of mine came to me the other day for relationship advise. Lord only knows why women like to refer to their single gay friends for relationship advise; we’re just as messed up as the rest of you! However, I like to think that any friend who is on the fringe of someone’s life can make a pretty objective opinion.

So, back to my friends love life! She said to me that she’d recently been having “dreams” about an old school friend. And when I say “dreams” I do mean those kinds of “dreams”! The background to this friend, we went to school together and she’s had a few judgement issues with regard to men and has had a recent breakup.

My immediate response was to tell her for the millionth time that I’m gay and she’s got no chance! Probing further it turns out it wasn’t me after all and I was saved once more. She then asked me what she was going to do about these dreams, and why she was now starting to have them.

I didn’t have much of an answer to the second question but sexual frustration seemed the best response. To the first question, the answer seemed obvious! “Go for it!” I said.

I told her to get his contact details and send him a message! Start a conversation. To begin with there was a lot of hesitancy and that’s when it popped into my head, “Burn your bra” I said, and “free yourself”! The bra being a symbol of the censorship that we place on ourselves. “Should I say this?”, “should I behave like that?”

The dream was either going to become a reality or they were going to go away.

How does this relate to my body transformation I hear you cry!

Well, why do we work out? To be healthy, because the doctor told us to, to lose a few pounds, so we can get laid? Of course I believe all these answers to be true.

As a by product of that we gain confidence. Confidence to walk tall and be brave. Certainly that is my motivation. I’m not ashamed to say that I do want pecs, I do want a six pack. Not because I think that’s how the media wishes us to look, but because that will help me to feel great about myself. Until we’re happy with who we are we will always give off that negative vibe to those around us.

Think positive, be positive and positive things will happen!
