The Nootka people who fashioned this war club were the first residents of Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They were renowned for their unique, stylized but realistic carvings, a fine example of which is demonstrated in the eagle head and feathers carved on this war club. Although the eagle is often associated with the Native American sky gods, it also represented the gods of war, and weapons such as this would have been used in the tribal wars.
The Nootka culture was based on whaling and fishing and the Nootka people believed that salmon were people who had been transformed into fish, and who fulfilled their duty of providing food for the people as part of the cycle of life. The Nootka held special ceremonies to welcome the salmon home each year, and fish are another significant symbol found in the art and artefacts of these people.

i don’t talk about plants enough. right now along with my rose of sharon cutting (which is still growing scary fast) i have some goldenrod growing in a pot in my room - it looked so sad that even though it was out of season i had to buy it. it too is growing fast.. it will start to warm up soon so i will plant it outside, it is very beloved by insects. recently ive been wanting to plant some more pumpkins as they grow very well, but nemo might eat them.. the forgetmenots i grew last year did well (and died a few months ago when winter came) but i forgot to take many pictures. i recently bought a packet of some sunflower seeds. ive only tried growing sunflowers once, but the seedlings immediately got trampled. id like to try again because they are really nice.
Instead of saying “the stone falls,” the Nootka say “it stones down.” The Nootka have no verb for “fall,” but they do have a special verb to describe the movement of a stone: “to stone.”
While this might seem odd, consider the English verb “to rain.” Whereas English-speakers have a special word for falling rain, there is no such word in Hebrew. Instead, they say “the rain falls.”
