I’m working on an art project which requires me to swatch a lot of inks by obtaining a lot of samples.

You will all be getting my unsolicited opinions about bottled inks. Here’s a sampler:

Sailor inks are for the rich. Noodler’s did some shit and you shouldn’t support them. I wrote three words in Organics Studio 5 months ago and it’s still smearing on my hands and over everything oh god oh god to this day. Ferris Wheel Press is my nemesis in this life and the previous.

I’m addicted to Benu pens. The Minima body is small and fantastic for tiny hands like mine, and the Red Roses colorway is *chef’s kiss*! 🌹💋 Translucent perfection!

One thing I love about Benu nibs in particular is that the Mediums, I’ve found, all have a stubbish grind to them (thick down-strokes, thin cross-strokes). 😱 Am I the only one who’s noticed that?! It’s like writing with a cursive italic without needing to pay extra for a custom grind! Why have I never heard anyone mention this before?!

The medium nibs are also nice and wet, which means my shimmer inks work perfectly in them! I also never thought I’d enjoy drawing with broader nibs, but the stubbish grind helped me achieve fine line-work where I needed it in my floral illustration while still making it easy to shade and use thicker strokes where necessary.

And did I mention the nibs are easy to replace?! This pen uses a Schmidt number 5 that twists easily out of the section and can be replaced with an entirely new unit for around $23 USD, so you don’t need to freak out if you can’t decide between a Fine, Medium, or Broad. Looove that.

Another thing I love is that despite the Minima’s small size, the converter it comes with has HUGE INK CAPACITY. And the body can house an international LONG cartridge. That’s a game changer for me. It means I can ink this for travel without worrying I’ll run out of ink mid-journaling session! Eeek! 😍

My only question now is… Which Benu should I acquire next?! 😂

Man, I love Noodler's Eel Black ink sm. 🖋️🖤 Not only is it gorgeous, but it really does exactly what it says it will, and in this day and age, that reliability is so invaluable.

I have some really pretty, colored inks I need to give a whirl, but I just keep going back to my bottle of Noodler.

fountain pens that my favs from house of the dragon would use

ok so since rhae is a writer she wants a pen with a large ink capacity, a flex nib for line variation (hc: she was taught calligraphy at a young age and it's as easy as walking to her now), that also functions as a demonstrator for when aegon III and viserys II get curious and want to try writing with it as well, and one that isn't too flashy so she can use it every day. for those reasons i'm giving her the Noodler's ahab flex — Clear 🥳

this pen can also be transformed into an eyedropper by removing the piston fill system and putting bottled ink in the barrel !! something she enjoys because she wants to be able to write for a long time with her most treasured inks and not have to think about refills. speaking of ink, she is very fond of all the Robert Oster shimmer inks, but by far her favorite is Heart of Gold

daemon's preferences for fountain pens differ a bit from rhaenyra's. he associates pens with work, therefore outside of working hours he'd rather not think or look at pens at all. he likes something reliable, so with a sturdy nib that's able to write for a while without lifting. he'd want one that's easy to use that can also handle the elements so the S.T. Dupont Défi Millennium — Navy Blue

he's the same with ink, he wants something in a cartridge for easy refills that also dries fast. he uses Kaweco Pearl Black Ink which rhaenyra so badly wants to switch for Noodler's Roses in the Louvre without him knowing

something about her just gives me the vibe that she's a reallll big fan of Sailor. specifically their Compass 1911 — Transparent Blue (hc: blue is her favorite color) she doesn't mind using convertors, in fact her most unpopular opinion is that convertors are better than eyedroppers because yeah, sure, an average eyedropper can hold 2-3 ml but for aemma, changing out inks and switching between different ones every few weeks is part of the fun !! she also doesn't write long essays/letters often, saving her pens for little doodles here and there, postcards, notes, etc.

because she switches them so often, she doesn't have any holy grail inks. she knows what she wants out of any ink — wetness and a certain level of vibrancy. when she fills her pen using a convertor, she dips it in one ink bottle and fills the pen halfway then uses a color that goes with the first to fill it the rest of the way. the two she does this with the most are the Herbin inks, specifically this one and this one

I do want to give a general warning that the owner of Noodler’s is known to be antisemitic and lets some of his more right wing politics show in his ink branding at times. Obviously very much niche drama, and he has apologized, but after finding out I personally felt uncomfortable supporting him any further.
