At first glance the two Conklin pens in this article could be Endura Symetrik pens from 1930s. They have all the elements shown in the A. Bienenstein Symetrik design patent, D83,592, awarded March 10, 1931: a rounded balance shape, a spring loaded clip, two cap bands, a crescent symbol on the cap, and a crescent symbol on the nib. The clip, the 1936 Conklin patented type, and nib, a Cushon Point type, could date the pen possibly as early as 1936. The barrel imprint tells a different story. It’s stamped THE Conklin PEN CO. over CHICAGO, ILL. U.S.A. over ENDURA – D- 83592 over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. This is a Chicago Conklin. A Chicago syndicate consisting of A. J. Parrson, M. H. Jacobs, and Max Horwitz purchased Conklin on July 13, 1938, and moved existing stock of unfinished pens and parts to Chicago. This dates it no earlier than mid 1938, and likely later as there would have to be some amount to transition time from Toledo to Chicago operations and production.

About that Conklin Crescent: I actually ended up with two. Much to my surprise! A small one, 25P, and a large one, 211L. It's the 211L that has a big ugly crack in the cap.
Tumblr media
And here's how I made ABSOLUTELY SURE that crack would stay closed.
Tumblr media
Not a pretty fix, but it'll do the job. Once the epoxy is fully set I'll clean it up a bit.
Sad to say I'm not sure I want to ink it because the cap wasn't the only thing that was cracked. The nib has a nasty long crack along its length, starting at the base. You can't see it unless you take the nib out. Maybe someday I'll pick up a homeless Conklin nib to replace it.
Anyway, here's some shots of these iconic pens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some fun facts about the Crescent: it was wildly popular when it was first introduced, both for its fine quality and for the fact that you could fill it one-handed. Among its fans was Samuel Langhorne Clemens - Mark Twain - who was then paid to endorse it.
Clemens's own Crescent is on display at his home/museum in Connecticut. And is apparently badly discolored and missing some bits. Proof of how much he loved it!
Conklin was so proud of their Crescent that they were reluctant to try anything new and fell behind in the game. Everyone else was doing things like using plastic instead of hard rubber and inventing new, more convenient filling systems. Conklin eventually caught up (the Nozac and Endura are both highly regarded) but they didn't survive much past World War II.

Conklin NOZAC Senior 7-M Word Gauge Green V-Line Pen
Tumblr media
- Conklin Endura green lime specks marble - 'Crescent' airhole on nib - Patent dates embossed on pocket clip & side lever Up here is a vintage Conklin Endura Symetrik fountain pen, which was manufactured in USA circa 1930s. The pen is in EXCELLENT condition, without any damage only showing minor wear due to age. In response to Sheaffer's introduction of the streamlined Balance pen in 1929, Conklin produced the first Endura Symetrik, a rounded off flat-top Endura in the 1930s. The pen is in stunning and rare GREEN LIME patterning. On the pocket clip of pen is the patent date 'Conklin PAT.MAY-28-1918' embossed. On the side lever, the patent date 'PAT NOV17.1925' AND THE 'CRESCENT' was embossed. The pen bears a large Conklin ENDURA 14ct solid gold nib, with a 'CRESCENT' airhole. A new sac has been fitted and the lever filling system is in full working order. The pen has been serviced and tested for full functionality. Conklin invented the first successful self-filling pen, the Conklin Crescent Filler in 1897, and it was very successful, propelling the company into the majors of pen manufacturing. Conklin continued producing Crescent Filler pens into the 1920s, eventually converting to lever-fill pens. This lateness to the game foreshadowed Conklin's decline, which accelerated during the depression, finishing with the company being sold to a Chicago company in 1938, along with all of it's tooling and inventory. From the late 1930s, Conklin pens were made with Chicago imprints. The company shuttered in the mid 1950s. We are also selling on ebay, please refer to our 6000+ positive feedback since 2005. Restored three more wonderful lever fill fountain pens I found at an estate sale. I also found 4 vintage/antique mechanical pencils that worked just fine and didn’t need any restoration at this sale so my desk is well stocked.
The top one is a 1920s Conklin with a #3 Toledo nib. (I couldn’t for the life of me find a model name so if you know it please message me)
The middle one is a 1930s Conklin Endura Symetrik with a 14KT Toledo nib.
The bottom one is a 1940s-1950s Wearever Pennant with a flexible fine (flexfine) nib.
These are a fun group of pens. I wanted very badly to put the symetrik in my purse as a travel pen but it leaks when stored sideways so a desk pen it must be. Ah well, I’m happy with them nonetheless :)

New pen day!
Fountain Pen Revolution, Himalaya v2
I was hoping this nib would be super flexy and it's not (but does have some flex), but I love the look and feel of this pen.
The nib is stiff enough that I can use it for normal writing which I really can't do with my other flex nib fountain pen (Conklin endura).
Compared to the Conklin, this pen isn't nearly as smooth or flexy, but at less than half the price, that's expected.

This is a Conklin Endura Nozac Symetrik Jet Black piston filler fountain pen from 1931. The Symetrik was the streamlined part of the Endura line in the 1930-1931 catalog and bears the gold filled Crescent inlay in the cap.  Conklin went through several name changes and imprints for the Nozac model in 1931 before settling simply on Nozac, initially tacking on Endura for a quality image and/or Symetrik for the streamlined shape with this new model. This 5 1/8 inch long pen has barrel stampings "Trade Conklin Mark, Toledo. Ohio. U. S. A., ENDURA NOZAC, SYMETRIK" on one side of the barrel and "PAT PENDING" on the other side. It has the April 28, 1918 patented Conklin clip. It uses the 14 karat gold Conklin Endura nib.

Shit, guys.
I may or may not have ordered another fountain pen. This one is a black plastic Conklin Endura from the 1930s with a fine and flexy 14ct gold Toledo nib. It has a name engraved on it: "Curtis De Rodes". Normally people don't like personalization on their vintage pens but...I THINK THIS IT WOULD MAKE FOR A GREAT CONVERSATION STARTER. And perhaps Mr. Rodes would be the subject of future research...and a piece of fiction. c:
But anyway, I technically haven't paid for it yet. WE SHALL SEE.
