one of the reasons i think that the murderbot diaries’ emotional moments hit so hard is because of a scarcity effect that the author has set up really, really well.

because, like—murderbot, as a character, is an answer to the question how do you “show and not tell” emotional moments from the lens of a character who point-blank will not acknowledge any affection directed their way. or, instead of overtly stating that characters are friends (“tell”), how do you demonstrate it with text (“show”)? well, most authors go ham on characters smiling at each other, laughing, joking, expressing reciprocal loyalty.

murderbot does none of those things. murderbot probably never smiled before preservation, and definitely didn’t laugh. (this is only partially an exaggeration.) telling jokes? hell yeah, MB’s funny as fuck. to other people? hell no. that would require conversations and it’d rather die, thanks.

add that to the fact that murderbot treats any expressions of affection toward it—internal and external—like being bit by a snake.

so you have this character + writing style that bars most conventional ways of establishing relationships between characters. you also have this character who is basically incapable of feeling any sort of reciprocated, positive emotion toward itself. so what do you do?

you work around your character. murderbot will never pick up on affectionate body language. it hates hugs. every sentence it hears passes through about fifteen different filters of self-loathing. so you make your relationships clear, and when you hit, you hit hard.

you summarize snapshots of characters panicking about the main character getting hurt. you drop your character’s performance reliability (and their walls) and have them banter. you have your character walk in on the tail end of conversations that expose concern for it.

and then you do things so overt that even your shit-self-esteem character can’t talk its way out of. you have its friend tell it directly that it can’t lose it too. you have its friends accommodate it and understand it without it directly expressing a single need. you have its friends stand up for it in conversation when it is too tired to do so. and then, when you really want to hit, you have your character pretend to be physically compromised rather than have to feel one (1) positive emotion toward itself.

positive emotions toward itself can’t really pass through murderbot’s walls. so you have to establish relationships by beating your main character over the head with them. and it can’t be all the time—because that’s not how relationships and emotional recovery, yknow, works—but it can be sometimes, and it can be very powerful, and that is why i think murderbot diaries in particular is very, very effective.

Thinking a bit more about this Steve Has Older Siblings AU I’ve got going on (here, here, and here). Specifically about Richard Harrington’s first wife, and two things:

1. She’s a saint. Theresa Kline (former Harrington) stood by her husband through multiple extramarital affairs but a not-quite-yet nineteen year old mistress with a baby was her breaking point. She bowed out gracefully.

Richard married his mistress and Theresa moved on. She never said a bad word about him to her kids or to anyone. She never spat an insult at the child that ruined her marriage or about her baby boy.

Though, she didn’t have to.

Her kids said enough bad things about Steve and his mom on her behalf to fill a book. They never miss an opportunity to remind Steve that while both their parents were from two of Hawkins’ more influential and wealthy families, his mother was a high school dropout homewrecker and a whore that didn’t love him.

Even after his siblings tried fixing their relationship with him, they all still take shots at his mom. Jason’s favorite analogy seems to be that him and his siblings are ‘purebred’ and Steve is a ‘mutt.’

Or, well. It was until Robin heard it and said, “Pure? Like the Nazi’s ideology?? Yikes.”

2. I realize that this AU does not really contradict anything important in the Officer Noodles (and also here) universe. You’d just have to make Angela Harrington Callahan’s little sister.

Figurine blabber time (again!)

Guys I’m genuinely jumping from joy when I finally got these because they. are. so. freakin. CUTE. I love how silly and cute they look! The vibrant colors of the figure does not disappoint & they pop off so much from other figurines. It compliments the style so much! I love this figure because of the style and it they did an amazing job of nailing the style for the figure! Its simple but I love how you can still feel and see the artist’s original style! There are two variations of this colored figurine but I personally prefer this vibrant versions because it so pleasing in the eye when displayed! I love the palette choice too, its contrast of colors makes the figure look more interesting and fun to look at!

The material choice on other parts are also such a good touch! The glossy boots and sleeves makes them feel alive! There are hints of colors in these glossy parts that doesn’t disturb the palette and make them dull but instead harmonizes with the over all look <3!

Theyre slightly bigger than your average prize figure, about 1.5 nendoroid tall for nendo scale XD They have big flat plastic base with their corresponding color theme! They feel sturdy and look absolutely great in anyone’s shelf or collection or just in your desk!

I’m sorry, but what the fuck is this?

This is not an acceptable way to talk to someone. It is an extremely dehumanizing way to view fandom artists, creators, and writers.

There is no hierarchy. People are not “gods”. We share our works out of love and passion. We are not content farms, or employees, or untouchable entities. Artists, writers, gif makers, render artists, videographers, meta-analyzers, meme makers, and other fandom creators could easily not share what they spend hours of their life on, but they do, and it is a privilege to have access to them, not a right. There is no competition, because everything created has inherent value and means something to someone.

Also, there are plenty of older creations that still exist to be cherished and shared. Just because new “content” isn’t being pumped out on a weekly basis, does not mean it doesn’t exist. I am grateful for all of the creators who have come before me whose works I can come back to when I’ve had a rough day, and all of the wonderful works that I still have yet to discover. I look forward to new people joining the fandom every day, and I love seeing the people I know still being active.

Lukas’s art is incredible and a big inspiration, and I still frequently go back to look at it because it makes me happy. It makes me glad when artists/writers/creators find a new niche that reignites their passion, even if it’s something I have no personal interest in. At the end of the day, we are all people with our own struggles carving out meaning in our lives.

There is a human behind the creation. It is the bare minimum to treat them like one.

I mean how you don't make hankcon content anymore so now other people are taking your place to make the good Hankcon content lmao. We have new hankcon gods now haha 😼

Viewing fandom and people making things celebrating characters they love in this way is shitty for everyone. Nobody is 'above' anyone else, there aren't 'thrones' or people on top. Just like there is no such thing as 'people taking peoples place' when it comes to enjoying ships.

Being told 'oh well you dont make good stuff anymore so now other people are' feels fucking shit. It's stressed me out and made me feel like crap.
