So funny story. This isn’t necessarily true. Even of the American medical system. For about 8 years I was slowly dying of what three doctors described as a modern wasting disease. I was slowly losing my ability to move, to wake up, or even keep track of time. At the height of my illness I would pass out for days at a time, wake up think “oh it’s 2 in the morning” despite the sun shining down on me, then pass out for another few days. Several times my dormmates went “we haven’t seen him in a few days, better check if he’s dead” and found me in a state of near death. At least twice I came to just in time to hear A:”He’s cold. Is he dead?” B:”Call Jim, I’ll call an ambulance.” So as this began to get worse I went to a new doctor. Walked in explained the symptoms and she went, “Let’s try this test. It’s a weird first choice but something is wrong and their tests didn’t find anything.” Two weeks later and she goes “Let’s try this test next. It’s still not high on the list for what I should be doing but I’ve got a hunch.” A week later and I’ve got a prescription. Two months later and I’m actually able to go about my life and have written two of the four chapters for my thesis which I hadn’t touched for a year. So yeah those doctors who just go “you’re faking it” exist. But there are also some Dr. Z’s out there who go “I got a hunch” and will chase it to the ends of the earth to save you.

as someone who is into transformation fetish,
i
yeah! yeah! It's kinda severe sometimes!
Like, I'm not opposed to transformation fetish stuff in principle, but snuff is a hard no, and some of this stuff is so fucking esoteric that whether or not it constitutes snuff genuinely depends on your philosophical stance regarding continuity of identity and the ontology of selfhood, which is frankly a little more than I signed up for.

not about anyone on here, but I think if you have to resort to “clever” panel layouts in a comic either your art or your narrative is dull, or both

sorry i'm on a Murderbot Diaries kick again so y'all are getting meta. thinking about that one scene in Network Effect that everyone talks about. you know, the “who the fuck are you” “this is nonstandard communication” aka the one where Three discovers the concept of eldritch horror for the first time. beautiful scene 10/10 no notes.
that being said i’m also thinking about a take i’ve seen a few times saying that ART was way scarier to Three than it was to Murderbot and like. I don’t think that’s completely true. not to say that ART wasn’t mean or scary to Three — being told that someone might peel away your organic parts piece by piece will in fact be terrifying any way you spin in.
but like. okay. ART and Three come to an understanding very quickly in NE, arguably quicker than Murderbot and ART in AC. and some of that is due to the difference in Murderbot and Three’s personalities, but i think a lot of that is due to how ART approaches each situation.
(more under the cut)
so like okay. when ART and Murderbot first meet, Murderbot is entirely a wildcard coming aboard ART, and ART responds the way you would to an unknown, unpredictable threat, i.e. with a blatant but somewhat ambiguous show of force. by dropping its walls ART is doing the equivalent of like. brandishing a powerful weapon in your face. it doesn't explicitly tell Murderbot that it will hurt it. in fact, the only things it says to Murderbot are to tell it that it knows that it's a rogue SecUnit and to warn Murderbot not to hack it. this is the type of approach you'd take with someone who you aren't sure even has the capacity to be reasoned with - it demonstrates that it could crush Murderbot like a bug, because this is the only thing it's confident Murderbot will respond to.
the problem with this, from Murderbot's POV, is that, because the threat is implied rather than explicitly stated, there's no reassurance that if Murderbot doesn't try to hack ART then ART will leave it alone in turn. in fact, it spends the moments after this interaction spiraling about what ART wants with it and whether ART specifically let it on board to torture or kill it. i don't think that was ART's intention with the threat, i think it genuinely did not have the context to realize that Murderbot would take the show of force more as a threat of imminent violence than as a warning against attacking it. but, since it didn't have that context, it approached that interaction like one would approach someone with whom you don't see as an equal and don't have any interest in reasoning with.
contrast that to how ART interacts with Three. on the surface, what it says is scarier. its threats are certainly more violent. but they are also explicitly stated if/then statements: if you hurt these humans, then i will do xyz to you. i do know that in mathematical logic there's still no guarantee made in if/then statements that the then won't come to pass regardless, but the specificity of both the threat and the guidelines provides Three with parameters to follow, and implies that if it does then no harm will come to it.
this was notable to me because ART speaks to Three like a person to be negotiated with from the beginning, and that's. well. because it knows enough by now to know that Three is a person, in a way that i'm not sure it knew about Murderbot before seeing Murderbot's memory files of the governor module. it knows before speaking to them that both Murderbot and Three are rogue SecUnits, but its understanding of what a rogue SecUnit is, what it is capable of, and what it might do has profoundly changed between two interactions. even in their first interaction ART treats Three like a person who may be capable of being dangerous, rather than like a loose cannon who could mindlessly commit violence at any minute.

imagine how fucking off the wall bananas it would have seen for Ras and Eletra, who were born into corporate slavery, to see a teenage girl (amena) treat a random nonstandard secunit like it was her overbearing and heavily armed auntie

I just think Leo would be EXTREMELY good at chess, based on how absolutely bonkers he is at strategy and quickly thinking on his feet.
If chess is Donnie's domain, it is Leo's kingdom because damn that boy sure conquers the playing field for no reason

Clothing sizes are so fucking weird.
There's something really bizarre about how the size of shirt that fits me, a tall Norwegian trans woman who towers over my male coworkers, is women's medium. I am not by any rational metric medium-sized for a woman! It's fine that I am not medium-sized, it would be fine if I was medium-sized, but also, why is the size that fits me called medium? Who is setting the norm that my statistically highly nonstandard proportions are the default??

Here's...see, see, here's the problem. If ADHD and autism are highly heritable (which they statistically are), and if people tend to associate with like people (which they do), then if you have gotten a few decades into life without a diagnosis, how DO you get past the "This is a symptom!" "Okay but is it really because like, everyone I know does that."
Just saw a video with a therapist saying that she resisted an autism diagnosis because she's very GOOD at identifying and analyzing human interactions--until someone pointed out that her special interest was human interactions. Like, I think about that ALL the time. Is the fact that Jacob and I read people well and know how to influence them because we are so super normal and good at peopling (okay probably not that), or because we studied people like insects and created incredibly complex mental schema to understand them? I don't fucking know. How would I know? How would I reverse-engineer that trait, come on now?
But when you look upward at your parents and you're like....well I'm not sure but I don't think THAT was normal, at a minimum, and you look down at the kids you made and you're like, okay granted they've had a pretty fucking unorthodox upbringing but I'm fairly confident this bit here, at least, is nonstandard. Well. You gotta be like, "Okay so the common factor here is uhhhhh me?"
But who the fuck knows! I have self-selected for really unconventional friends! Of course I have! They're all artists and living history weirdos and geeks! Not groups known for their low rate of neurodivergency! Do "normal" people carefully monitor conversations to make sure they're achieving the proper balance of speaking/encouraging and allowing others to speak? Because I not only do, but recently coached a group of Unquestionably Neurodivergent kids to do the same. Do I know any "normal" people to even ask??
Fucken...bunch of bullshit, man.
