Do you think most fans project into Katara when shipping her with Zuko or with Aang? I kinda feel guilty about this because a part of me ships her with Zuko because I myself would want a more mature partner, rather than someone I would need to take care and baby. I might be in the minority though because I know Zutara works and makes waaaaay more sense beyond just my personal preference in a man.

I don't think that "most" fans do much of anything. To be honest, unless someone is somehow able to survey every single fan of the show and the ship to find out their opinions and reasoning, I don't think that it makes sense to generalize about either ship's fandom.

Anecdotally, I can say that most Zutara fans I have met have been women or AFAB nonbinary people. And since I really only interact with the Zutara side of the ATLA fandom, I can also say that basically everyone I've met in the fandom agrees that Zuko would be a better partner for Katara, and most seem to agree that the relatively equal maturity levels between Zuko and Katara are a huge factor in their compatibility. But when it comes to projecting onto Katara... it's really hard to say whether anyone projects onto a character, even anecdotally. Yes, I have met a few people who relate heavily with Katara and would totally date Zuko if he was real. But then I've also met (probably even more) fans who ship Zutara, but would prefer other characters (like Hakoda) for their own partner, who are solely attracted to women and therefore would NEVER consider Zuko for their own partner (some of them would like to date Katara if she was real), or who don't experience attraction at all personally and don't want a partner for themself. Obviously, my experience isn't necessarily representative of all the people who ship Zutara, but in my experience, it seems like relatively few project onto Katara, or use their projection onto her as a reason for their shipping preferences.

But even if I'm wrong, and it turns out ALL the people I don't know, ALL the people I've never spoken to ship Zutara because they project onto Katara and would prefer a partner like Zuko over a partner like Aang, where is the problem with that?

No, seriously. Where is the problem? If someone sees Katara's canon relationship with Aang as a reflection of a relationship they've experienced in their own life where they had to act as a caretaker for their partner at the expense of their own needs and wellbeing, are they wrong for wanting a partner who operates on equal footing with them? Is it wrong for women (or anyone else who relates to Katara as a character) to want more from their partners? Should they feel ashamed because they enjoy seeing their ideal relationships portrayed in fiction? And if so, then why is it okay for the men who created this show, one of whom was quite literally filmed stating, "Who hasn’t felt like Aang at some point? When you’re pursuing a girl and she’s just gonna go after that guy who really doesn’t care about her?” (John O'Bryan, one of the show's writers), to clearly project onto Aang's romantic relationship with Katara (despite the fact that his own statement implies that the girl being pursued has no interest in her pursuer)? Why do we, as fans of the show, have to feel ashamed for preferring a more balanced relationship dynamic when the creators and writers explicitly projected their own desires onto the (extremely unbalanced) canon romance?

You're fine, anon. You're allowed to have preferences, you're allowed to have reasons for those preferences, and you don't have to feel guilty about any of that. Even if you are projecting onto Katara (which I'm not completely sure that you are), it sounds to me like your core reason for preferring Zutara over Kataang is that you prefer more balanced relationships between equal partners. And frankly, equality in relationships seems like an admirable ideal both in real life and in fiction.

I've seen the Inception fandom floating around for over 10 years now so I thought I knew what the movie was about. I decided to watch it yesterday and,, what the fuck

You're telling me Arthur and Eames aren't even the MAIN CHARACTERS? I had no idea Leonardo DiCaprio was in this movie, let alone the goddamn protagonist. I thought it was a full two hours of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy staring soulfully into each other's eyes as they tried to figure out what was and was not real, but these motherfuckers barely have five minutes of screen-time together in the whole film?? I want to see characters being taken care of in an explicit and worshipful way. Home-cooked meals. Hair brushed and braided by gentle hands. Little gifts just because.

I want to read about characters who are not used to kindness being bombarded by acts of service. This trope works romantically and platonically. Give me found family and acts of service - all the ways a character is wrapped up in wordless, explicit care after years of cruelty and having no idea how to handle. I need it.

definitely a lesbian. mainly because of her thing with chan and the fact that her whole sense of worth is based on being the perfect fire nation princess, and also being better than her dumb gay brother. i think coming to terms with the fact that this is one of many ways in which she is not perfect and not "better" than zuko could be really healing for her. also bc she is so in love with ty lee it's so sad for her </3

You’re right, it is very annoying how some people (usually a certain brand of Zukka shippers) insist that Zuko HAS to be gay and Toph HAS to be a lesbian.

I mean we all know that the only reason that they think Zuko HAS to be gay is so that people won’t ship him with women instead of with Sokka.

I also find that a lot of Zukkas will insist that Mai, Ty Lee, Toph, and sometimes even Suki and/or Yue all HAVE to be lesbians. You know what all of those girls have in common? They all canonically dated or expressed romantic interest in Zuko or Sokka. Connect the dots.

Obviously not everyone who has those headcanons is like that. People can and should be allowed to headcanon characters however they want. Personally I view Zuko as bisexual and Toph as straight (none of the popular F/F Toph ships appeal to me and I generally find that portrayals of her as LGBT aren’t to my tastes because some - not all - people who headcanon her as such will often exaggerate her masculinity/androgyny far beyond the extent to which it exists in canon in order to make her the “man” in the relationship as well as ignore that the reasons for her gender nonconformity are heavily tied to her trauma and disability and have very little to do with sexuality, which is something that squicks me out. Also dislike how society at large seems to really hate the idea of GNC women being with men because that means they’ll be forced to reconsider their perception of gender roles within M/F relationships). However, those are just my interpretations.

yes exactly! i'm all for people having their head canons, but there is no reason to shame others because they have a different one than you. it reeks of privilege because no head canon is more "right" than another. and also, why are we gatekeeping characters from having other lgbtq+ identities that other fans can identify with? seems very exclusionary to me.

i think the thing that bothers me about zookas is that they will take scenes like the jinko fountain scene and use it as "proof" that he's gay. bc zuko hesitated at first and also because he pulled away and ran away. like, there's so many other reasons for that, including the one that's actually, ya know, canon. zuko was nervous. it's his first teenaged date, so ofc he would be a bit awkward about it. not to mention that he is a decent enough person to not want to complicate a girl's feelings for him because she doesn't know the real him. he even says in the tale of the earth kingdom novelization that he likes this girl. and he says in canon that he had a nice time. that's not to say that people can't head canon what they want, but to say things like "there's no het explanation for this." there's literally several, actually.

another thing that i've seen is zookas use the "zuko gay" in response to zutaras, but then they'll also simultaneously ship m*iko. and it's just so obviously a bias/convenience thing because if you hc him as gay (which is fine), why would you like a ship of him with a woman??? just say you hate zutara and go.

back to toph, because i've been meaning to speak on this for a while. so toph is my favorite character and i head canon her as nonbinary and pansexual. it is actually partially through my appreciation of toph's character that i realized that i was nonbinary. so when certain people gatekeep and confine her to one identity because of stereotypical traits and behaviors, i take it very personal.

none of toph's popular F/F ships appeal to me either, but i do see her as LGBTQ+. i have to agree that the way she is masculinized does cause me significant discomfort, especially wrt to people who do so to limit her "desirability" for aang.

i also find that a lot of people will head canon aang as nonbinary or GNC (i do as well). so in the case of toph being lesbian, she could potentially still be attracted to aang. so why then, do people act like it would just be a het relationship? it doesn't make sense. they're both queer as fuck. not to mention that i've had to endure months on twitter with people saying that kateeng is wlw (which gives me the HIVES) because aang is nonbinary. so suddenly, when it's taang, aang's a straight man and/or toph would have to be straight. these people talk themselves into circles i swear. it's just easier to admit that you want aang only for katara than to sit here and come up with flimsy excuses.

i wish people would just admit that they don't think toph is feminine enough for aang. i've seen so many shitty takes about how toph would be abusive to aang and always hurt him, or that they would argue a lot (which is comical because kateeng canonically has 3 big fights.) it's just upsetting how toph is treated and perceived by certain people in the fandom to push their agendas.

for me personally, i see aang and toph as nonbinary pan. so i see their relationship pretty much free of gender roles and they are equals. they already have a good foundation for childhood friends to lovers. i just don't get why people hate taang so much and would instead rather invest time in a ship with a side character from ONE comic (no offense to any tophl*ngs out there, but the ship literally gives me not one fuzzy feeling.) in lieu of her best friend that she spends two seasons with, has multiple interactions with in the comics, etc. i feel like this is mainly because toph isn't perceived as "shippable" and is cast to the side, which sucks because she's my favorite character.

ik i've said this before and ik it's easy to just project my old blorbos onto my new blorbos but ed and stedes genders are actually so similar to sokka and zukos genders... especially zuko and stede like the way that their characters very much depend on being gay (& nd in zukos case but i dont have a real opinion on whether stede is nd) cis colonizer men. and i can imagine ed or sokka possibly being transmasc like it doesn't seem obviously wrong in the way that it does for zuko or stede but it also doesn't seem super plausible. but i am a nonbinary and/or transfem ed truther and a nonbinary sokka truther .so

- mai uses she/her and they/them pronouns; most people refer to them with she/her and they don't mind but their friends make sure to alternate and they really appreciate it 💛

- they realized that they weren't a girl when they were pretty young, but they never said anything because their parents barely short of condemned them for being a daughter instead of a son and they didn't want to frustrate their parents any further

- the actual moment she realized she was agender was when someone commented on "what a beautiful girl" she was turning out to be and she just... she knew "girl" wasn't right for her. it wasn't who she was

- mai told ty lee first; ty lee was super encouraging and understanding because one of her siblings is nonbinary. she helped (and continues to help, even when they're older) mai style her hair in different ways depending on how feminine or androgynous mai was feeling!

- zuko did Not understand at first (ty lee kind of accidentally told him when they were young), bless his heart, but who was he to question? (he thought they were really cute no matter what, so...)

- mai and aang TOTALLY bond over their detachment from the gender binary. gender isn't real! they don't need it!

Author's Note: This fic is inspired directly by the post I made about everyone's headcanons about Zuko being a sex cryer and wanting to cry with someone during sex about all the affection you've both been deprived of being a kink. Also inspired by the song Like Real People Do by Hozier, another man I love with my entire heart. If a man doesn't love me like a Hozier song, he doesn't love me at all, and that's on periodt, luv. (Other song recommendations for reading include the acoustic version of All Around Me by Flyleaf and Innocence by Avril Lavigne, because I am still a 2009 emo kid.)

Zuko kisses you as he slides inside you, a ritual he’s never broken. Moments like these mean more than sex; they're time spent truly connected with one another, as close as you can possibly be in a world only inhabited by the two of you. His fingers weave between yours on the sheets beside your head, his entire length filling you as easily as if he were another part of yourself.

He takes his time with you, moving slowly and delicately, pressing his forehead to yours and never pulling away. He continues kissing you as he repeatedly parts the flesh between your thighs, the heat of his naked chest against yours warming you better than any flame. His lips are tender, soft, tasting bitter like ginseng and sweeter than the richest honey. With his arms around you, his body forming walls of sturdy brick to house your battered soul, you feel safer than anywhere else.

Zuko cherishes each breath that escapes you, releasing in synch with the deep, thoughtful pace of his hips. For some reason, as Zuko lowers his face to kiss your neck, you're reminded of this - of how harshly the universe treated you, making you stronger than you thought you could be before sending you the greatest tenderness you'd ever known. The ache in your chest that became so familiar returns, soothed by Zuko’s presence surrounding you. You start to cry, tears bubbling in your eyes and rolling down your cheeks onto the mattress before you can stop them.

“Turtleduck?” Zuko murmurs, leveling himself once more so he can look you in the eye; one of his hands raises, running through your hair. “What's wrong?”

His pet name for you brings on more tears, your face contorting under a tidal wave of emotion as you shake your head. Your connection with each other is such that he doesn't have to ask any more; he simply buries his face into your neck, slowing himself further but not stopping, using his ginger pace to further ease you. He soon feels overcome himself, the same expressions of grief and joy rolling through him, causing his shoulders to heave under your grip; his tears pour onto your skin, your fingers digging into his back as you attempt to bring him even closer, a feat which isn't possible.

After a few moments, Zuko regains himself, adjusting and insistently pressing his lips to yours. He keeps himself locked with you this way - kissing you, forearms propped beside your head and fingers knotted in your hair - as he sheaths himself completely inside you, hardly removing himself yet still repeatedly hitting the muscle just beneath your stomach. You tighten around him, thighs squeezing around his hips as he edges you closer to oblivion, both of you continuing to weep silent tears onto each other’s cheeks.

“I love you,” Zuko whispers between kisses. “I'm all yours…”

His amorous ministrations bring you to your peak, the tension inside you releasing in a rushing current that curls your toes and sends you floating. You don't close your eyes; instead, you lose them within his, the reflections within them shimmering like stars in a midnight sky. He isn't far behind you, burying himself to the hilt as he spills out inside you with a rapturous moan and a few panting, heated breaths. You take his face in your hands, kissing the creased, rippling skin of his left cheek.

Zuko stays within you for a long while afterward, savoring the feeling of your bodies knitted together. He runs his thumbs over your cheeks, wiping away your tears and replacing them with his own kisses. You take his hand in yours, kissing his knuckles and whispering your own “I love you”s, knowing well that they don't have to be said to be understood.

Everyone sais that Zuko is the dad of the gaang but like... no. he was raised in royalty. he wants people to give him money. Yes he chainged but no. So instead of a mom and dad role thing we have two moms and a child/parent. Katara is the one that knows what they all need. She knows what they have to buy. Who is doing the dishes. Who needs to bathe Momo. And Yue is the one that just goes along with katara and simps™ for her. They have the good cop bad cop dynamic. Yue is the good cop. And she's always eather really chill, in fighting/learning mode or simping for her lovers. No inbetween. Because you cannot convince me otherwise. Yue is like the biggest lesbian here. What is gayer than the fucking moonspirit and fish??? Anyways. I got a little sidetracked there. Or should i say *smug look* trucked *wink* OH GOOD I NEED TO STOP. Sorry if it is weird to read. how i feel about him: oh so many feelings. i love him so much my heart hurts. he is me and he is my brother and he is my boyfriend and he is my son. i want to make everything okay for him. he's the character i've grown most attached to out of anything i've ever consumed and my heart is full of him <3

all my romantic ships: ZUKO, suki, yue. azula but ONLY theoretically in an au where she's not like. insane.

non-romantic OTP: the sokka&ty lee friendship potential is INSANE and unironically i think they would be such powerful besties. they both kind of get written off as stereotypical pink girl and blue boy but they contain multitudes and love to paint eachothers nails. (edit: but also katara for actual real life reasons)

unpopular opinion: quit woobifying him. he is not a himbo. he is not sexist once he's taught otherwise. he is the most intelligent person in the show. he is down with murder. he's bi. katara didn't raise him. he is the most responsible and type A person in the world. he uses humor as a coping mechanism for his clinical depression and adhd. need i go on?

yeah i do here are my general hcs for them

aang - nonbinary babey. not a girl or a boy or in-between or whatever. he is just sitting here... they use all pronouns, but like alternating

katara - she/they transfem nonbinary. she feels connection to “being a girl” but it’s in a funky way you know??

sokka - demiboy and uses ne/nim pronouns. at first ne though ne was like. a Trans Boy and it was as simple as that but later figured out there was more than that

suki - she’s a trans girl i just know she is, also she uses she/xe pronouns and doesn’t care how/if you alternate because they both are fine and xe doesn’t really prefer one to be used more than the other or anything

toph - he/him nonbinary lesbian. its just a vibe. i have no real reason for this i just got an ask once and like yeah. that sounds right

zuko - trans guy who uses he/him pronouns. maybe aang eventually gets him to try out neopronouns and he vibes with one??? idk

Most popular one-shot: Most definitely we’ll give the world to you (and you’ll blow us all away), one of my contributions to Maiko Week! I’m not surprised it’s an ATLA fic, but I find it interesting that a fic with Izumi in it blew up so quickly. But hey, if y’all want more Izumi content, you won’t be disappointed 😉

Most popular multi-chapter fic: ...I’m really embarrassed to say because I don’t think I’ll ever finish it...but En Hamilton Heights is the only multichap fic I’ve published so it’s gotta be that one 😂 hopefully soon I’ll have another fic to add to that, since I’m working on one (sorry EHH fans but it’s been too long and tbh I don’t remember where I was going with it :/ I’m thinking I might orphan it)

Favorite story you’ve written so far: you think this world is a dream come true (but you’re wrong) for sure! It’s super niche but it’s something I wrote out of love for a movie I discovered this Halloween and absolutely love. Though all you’ve got to do is want something (and then let yourself have it) is a close second. Basically, anything I write that sounds absolutely bonkers as a concept is one that I love 😂 (and it’s no coincidence that both fics are Mai-centric! I love all my Mai-centric fics nearly equally)

Fic you were nervous to post: Is there an “all of the above” option? 😂 I’m always nervous to post. But in particular, I was nervous for if you ran away (come back home), because it was Mai-centric and longer than any one-shot I’d written thus far, and also you think this world is a dream come true (but you’re wrong), because it’s Mai-centric and a Coraline AU, which makes it BONKERS as an idea

Why was I nervous to post Mai-centric fics, you ask? Two reasons: 1) Mai is very different from who I am as a person (I vibe a lot more with Aang and Ty Lee, sometimes Katara and Sokka), so I didn’t want to upset the Mai stans by writing her incorrectly. 2) Mai is generally not well-liked in the fandom at large, so I especially didn’t want to attract antis who would accuse me of writing Mai as too emotional and loving (which is why I tried to justify that in my tags). Luckily, my comments have all been lovely, and I’m far less afraid to post fics about her now that I’ve written three fics with her as the focus! And the shoutout from @nonbinary-crafter-aang praising my portrayal of her?? I was touched 🥺 still am

How you choose your titles: Song lyrics or movie/book lines that speak to me, occasionally a pun. Remember that post I rb’d about how authors title their works? My tags pretty much say it all 😂

Do you outline: Ehh...define outlining 😂 for my one-shots, nope. But for my upcoming multichap works (see below) and Nanowrimo work (original fiction, so I won’t talk about it on here, but send an ask if you’re curious), YES ABSOLUTELY!

For my Nanowrimo work and one of my upcoming AUs (a Soulmate AU), the worldbuilding is so complex that it’s an absolute necessity. For the other upcoming AU (a time travel AU), there are just too many things that need to happen at certain times so as not to interfere with canon events, and things I want to change from canon and things I want to keep...I think you get the idea 😂

Complete: Basically my entire maiko halloweek series! Check it out if you want some fics about the most underrated canon ATLA couple :)

In-progress: ...En Hamilton Heights again...but not for long, sadly. Still trying to decide between a quick conclusion and just flat-out orphaning it. Still haven’t made up my mind, but either way, it won’t be what I originally planned, unfortunately.

I’m also counting my ATLA Soulmate AU on the basis of forever in my mind (only you), which has the worldbuilding and fits into the AU without much problem (the AU is going to be a series of one-shots, not a multichap fic, because there won’t be enough deviations from canon imo to justify multiple chapters. And one-shots are just less pressure for me 😂)

[EDIT 12/12/2020: added another fic because I’m an idiot and forgot about this too 🤦‍♀️😂 it’s a year-old idea that I started writing but I’m picking it back up thanks to the Heist banter in MatPat’s St Jude stream!]

-A fic series combining Escape the Night and Who Killed Markiplier (Heist and Date are part of it too, but only tangentially at the moment. Depends on how involved I want DA Y/N to be). Tentatively titled A Heavy Cost, and definitely won’t happen in any of Mark’s projects, but in a way that’s actually for the best 😂 the canonicity for me stops at ETN S3 (with some S4), then it’s canon divergence

Coming soon/not yet started: OOOH YESSS HERE WE GO

Okay okay sooo we’ve got two main things:

–An ATLA Soulmate AU, featuring platonic and romantic soulmates! I know I called it in-progress, and I stand by that even though I haven’t actually set up the series on AO3 yet, but this AU is about to be SO MUCH MORE than just a few Maiko moments. Because...drum roll...it’s gonna be entirely Aang-centric (with maybe one or two exceptions)! Like Mai, Aang is a character that doesn’t get as many -centric fics as he should (and being an Aang stan also isn’t unanimous for some reason??), so I’m gonna fix that. Plus I want to dive further into his mind, and I think I’m more equipped to do that than I was with Mai, since Aang and I are very similar in attitude.

–Bumizumi time travel AU, which can be read as platonic until the last couple chapters (it’ll be multichap) but definitely has a romantic agenda throughout. So just. Be warned if you don’t ship them. It’s gonna be chock full of comedy and antics! Also A LOT of platonic affection between Izumi and teen Zuko (and just between Izumi, Bumi, and the Gaang in general), because platonic affection is underrated and also I can :D I’m also probably gonna make fun of how some elements of affection have become solely romantic territory, because...um, no, hugging and holding hands and cuddling can be done between friends, thanks! (Maybe it’s the ace in me talking. But regardless)

There are also vague concepts I’m spitballing, like:

-Zukaang telepathy AU (Platonic Zukaang, the only romance I’ll ever write in ATLA is for the canon ships, prompted by a dream because apparently ATLA lives in my head rent-free forever now 😂)

-Evil Zuko AU (Azula doesn’t exist, mostly prompted after watching Aang make fun of Zhao and realizing that if Zuko had been in any position of power during the War...the Gaang would have stood no chance at all)

-Bumizumi Arranged Marriage AU (Bumi and Izumi both think the other is hotheaded/reckless (Izumi @ Bumi) or uptight (Bumi @ Izumi). So Kataang and Maiko (along with Sukka, Ty Lee, and Toph because...duh) set them up in an arranged marriage, with the presented reasoning being that they already know each other’s families, it’ll be a great symbol of unity, and this way Izumi doesn’t have to worry about suitors. They both agree to it (it’s arranged, not forced), and over time, they warm up to each other...and maybe even...fall in love?? Prompted because we need more arranged marriage fics! On that note, I’m gonna plug shadows and steel by @dearestpartnerofgreatness because arranged marriage needs more rep and this fic does it and with Maiko to boot!)

-Zukaang as Brothers AU (I saw a fic about this, but it wasn’t complete. If it’s not done by the time I get to this concept, I’m gonna write it, because just...imagine the possibilities! Zuko and Aang are already basically brothers in canon anyway, this is just making them brothers in blood as well as in their hearts. This is especially vague because I have no concept of how this is gonna work 🤷‍♀️ I’ll get to it eventually)

-A fix-it fic based on May You Always Be Satisfied, a backstory fic for Who Killed Markiplier by @blackaquokat! I recently reread it and remembered that I was gonna write a fix-it for that fic. Not because the fic sucks, it’s actually amazing! I’m just a sucker for the main (requited unrequited) pairing, and there’s at least five ways to make that pairing canon and avoid the mess of Who Killed Markiplier. And THEY ALL DESERVE TO BE HAPPY OKAY

-A Finnrey fix-it for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (this one is especially vague, and I probably won’t write it since a bunch of these already exist, but it’s fun to think about. Maybe if I ever run out of WIPs 🤷‍♀️)

Upcoming story that you’re most excited to write: I’m equally excited for the Soulmate AU and the Bumizumi Time Travel AU! I’m also excited for my Nanowrimo work to be finished, but that’s more so in-progress than upcoming

I chose the characters that impacted me deeply on a personal level throughout my life (often shown by how long my love lasts over the years and if i was inspired to write for them). 

In no specific order under the cut: 

Legolas

The Lord of The Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien. 

I think it’s only fitting I start off with this magnificent guy. Maybe I gotta admit, i’ve just had a crush on him ever since I was like, nine years old? He’s the character I will fight tooth and claw for (though I guess he doesn’t need me to do that). I love Orlando Bloom’s portrayal of him, eventhough he is vastly different from the books. Book Legolas is such a delight as well, he feels so whimsical and playful and his banter with Gimli is just gold. I was sad when The Hobbit trilogy came out and I was so disappointed by how they butchered his character, it just did not feel authentic anymore (maybe I am also just bitter about the forced hetero storyline for him. makes no cents, this elf is GayTM your honour. and he will meet his soulmate Gimli in a few decades).  Either way, Legolas is the love of my life, thanks for coming to my tedtalk,

Peter Pan 

Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie

Another childhood crush of mine. The gif I chose if from the 2005 movie because we always used to watch it and it is to this day one of my favourite movies. It’s so dreamy, so magical, yet also incredibly sad and sweet.  I have this very strange fascination with Peter Pan. There is something incredibly unsettling about him, especially in the book. He represents something every child wants - who doesn’t want to escape their bedroom and fly away to experience magical adventured far from the adult world? And yet he also represents the impossibility of it, the curse he carries around with himself because he will forever stay alone, no matter how many lost boys he gathers around himself. And Wendy - it’s a love that was never meant to grow and mature, it’s a fleeting dream for the both of them.  I have seen many different adaptations of Peter Pan and I have my favourites, though I want to give a special mention to the book Peter Darling by Austin Chant. It’s a retelling of the story how we know it, in which Peter returns to Neverland after having finally grown up BUT the main points I want to highlight is trans Peter? Heck yes. Gripping and compelling gay love story with our favourite original lost boy Captain Hook? YES. 

Snufkin

Moomins, Tove Jansson.

I have discovered Snufkin for myself only last year, and yet I know he will stay with me forever. In short - I vibe with him, he vibes with me. His anxieties about being with people and longing for solitude? His fear of being loved and being important to someone to a point he doesn’t know what to do with himself? This man just wants to roam freely with his own mind and yet he always returns for something that captures him. Mum, I love him because I have rarely felt this seen before. Also, Snufkin said ACAB. 

Prince Jing - Xiao Jingyan

Nirvana in Fire (2015)

This too is a darling I have only discovered recently. I watched Nirvana in Fire this year and let me tell you, it’s the best show I have seen in a long while. It’s absolutely amazing and it also ripped my heart out. All the characters are absolutely amazing and I am still not over it.

To be honest, I contemplated between Xiao JIngyan and Mei Changsu, because character-wise I think the latter is a lot more interesting and compelling. He makes for a fantastic heartbreaking and flawed protagonist.

However I have to admit - it was love at first sight with Prince Jing for me and I’m still lowkey mad abt it rip. Seems like I am not immune to Pretty Prince Propaganda. But apart from that, I adore him for his genuine

goodness,

his almost naive drive to be better and seek justice. He lost everything, and for the longest time did not have anything to fight for. So alone and lost and bitter, it makes me sad how much it hardened him. He is heartbreak and clumsy kindness hidden under a skin of scars that was inflicted by his father and many others. I see his sad cat-eyes and I cry, that’s just how it is.

Edmund Pevensie

The Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis

I grew up with these books and movies - they have always been part of my life and it will probably always stay that way (only last night I rewatched the first movie and sobbed).  Imagine my surprised when I finally watched the last movie about five years ago and was incredibly impressed by how they adapted the book; also imagine my brain suddenly going CASMUND in bold letters at Skandar Keynes’ and Ben Barnes’  performance in that movie.  From there, I rediscovered this story completely anew for myself. My favourite Pevensie sibling has always been Lucy (and still is, because I identify with her so much and she feels like home to me); however this new discovery of Edmund’s character was overwhelming. It’s interesting to see characters you’ve grown up with from a more grown up point of view. I don’t want to lay out all my thoughts here, just know I am so heartbroken for him, and so so proud as well. His character arc is amazing and maybe that’s how the last movie makes me even more emotional. Seeing Edmund and Lucy still holding on to Narnia but knowing that that door was closing for them? Not to mention what happens in the later books (we don’t talk about that).  Also did I mention Casmund. Here, have my incredibly emo and depressing take on Edmund’s character that I started writing four years ago and which will forever stay a WIP. 

Nie Huaisang

The Untamed (2019)

My son. My soul. My bane of existence. The tragic thing about him is, that he does not really exist in canon as I have created him for myself. He’s a secondary character in the show, always so relatable yet still brings the ultimate twist of the story, yet he still remains this incomplete shadow. The movie

Fatal Journey

gave him a lot more and I cried tears of joy and devastation. I don’t know why I latched on to him so much, but apparently he is the one that I project on, the one that feels like he sits somewhere inside my chest. I don’t know what else to say - this year he has been everything to me. I spend a lot of time in his head while writing, and maybe that’s how he’s there forever now. Nie Huaisang saw my brain and went it’s free real estate. All my love for you, you dramatic art hoe.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Ah, another lifelong companion. There are many adapations that I adore - starting from the origin of it all, the books and stories which I have all devoured; the 80s adaptation with Jeremy Brett which was incredibly wonderful; to BBC Sherlock which shaped and traumatised me (I still like the first three seaons but I am too hurt to think about it); to the numerous movies -  but by far my most favourite performance is Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. Somehow he manages to capture the Holmes I see in my head when I read the books, the sharp yet polite eccentric detective, who loves his companion so much and who has desire to help others.  Sherlock Holmes will always stay special to me, in so many different ways. He shaped my youth and I know he will stay with me. (also what would you say when I told you he helped me discover that I can, in fact, be queer AND ace at the same time? thanks pal).  What else is there to say? Sherlock Holmes is a universe that you can dive into and find many amazing treasures. 

Isak Valtersen 

SKAM (2015)

There he is, the boy that changed my life. SKAM changed my life. All of the characters did. However, Isak is special for many, as I imagine. I remember winter 2016, when tumblr was flooded by these norwegian white boys kissing in a pool and cuddling and I was like ‘nah’, this doesn’t look convincing.  I don’t know what changed my mind but I remember sitting down at last and watching all that was released of season three and it was only downhill from there. I remember starting to follow the real life updates religiously while watching the other previous seasons in between. The one clip that completely wrecked me was when Isak went to the school nurse about his struggles with sleep - it felt like for the first time I saw someone on screen that could understand me on so many different levels. The entierty of seaons three is so personal, I would tell you to go watch it if you don’t know what I mean. The entire show in fact. It’s a masterpiece and it feels so real. This show impacted my life in a way that no show has managed to do before. I miss it so much. I miss Isak too sigh. 

Shang Xirui

Winter Begonia (2020)

Technically, for me personally, Shang Xirui is the nonbinary, gay and ace representation I need in my life (or at least that’s my own personal take on him), but since that is not official, he’s still here on this list. Of course he is because wow, it’s been a long while since I’ve seen such a compelling character on screen. I went from disliking him to being absolutely heartbroken over him. I don’t think any other character in this show captured me as much as he did. There are so many layers to him and discovering all of his sides is a wonderful, heartbreaking, painful and also beautiful journey. I’m not sure I understand all of him yet, but I am willing to try and dig and just ponder his existence. This too, is a perfect example for a flawed yet authentic protagonist. Also he is the most beautiful thing on this planet, or at least that’s how I have been feeling ever since I watched this. I wish to write more of him in the future.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)

I grew up watching ATLA and my favourite characters have always been Toph, Zuko and Uncle Iroh. In recent years however, I completely fell in love with Aang all anew. 

I think especially in the past, I had these prejudices against main characters and found them all the most boring personalities ever. In recent years this changed a lot and especially Aang is a prime example for that. Watching him from the perspective of older me, I find so much wisdom in this young boy. Somehow he represents all I wish to be in my life but at the same time he shows his flaws, he carries this sadness with him that will accompany him all his life. This inner battle and chaos that he has to face day to day and in the end - he is just a young boy. So much has been taken from him and yet he learns how to not let it overtake him, that anger and hurt. He tries his hardest to be better than the day before, even if sometimes the world crashes down on him and he gets overwhelmed. He is a child recruited by adults to manage their mistakes and play into the hands of predestined fate and in this essay I will -

Harry Potter 

Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling

I am surprised myself. I thought I would put Fred and George here, or Remus and Sirius, however I realised that none of them quite capture this feeling of lifelong change, of personal, deep impact that Harry had on me. 

As with Aang above, I used to think Harry was the most boring protagonist, yet my opinion took a 180° turn in the past years. Many of the things I wrote for Aang apply to him too - the fact that he was a child, that lost so much, and was always faced with challenges that a child should never have needed to face. Something I want to address is how my favourite book, The Order of the Phoenix, lays all of this out. Harry is just as flawed, just as vulnerable and angry as anyone else. I know some people did not like his ‘emo behaviour’ in the fifth book but for me it just showed how human he is, how he was just a teen like myself at that time. As for many, this boy shaped my entire life, shaped a generation, and I will forever be grateful. I’m sad and angry at how J*R behaves, and how she puts us in the position of doubting our love for these stories. I know I will always love them, but I will not turn a blind eye on all the problematic shit is carries with itself and what the author piles upon us.

The Untamed (2019)

I will try and keep this short, because if you want to read my thoughts about Wangxian just go to my ao3 and find the  over 70k i wrote for them.  I decided to put them here together because I can’t seperate them and I can’t choose between them. Each of them carries something I recognise in myself, and each of them is the opposite of me. They each own my heart and soul and I know there will never be a fictional couple like this for me ever again. They’ve snuck their way into my heart and have never left. They deserve to be here, together, because my love for them is indescribable. Bless them.  + Bonus:

The Doctor

Doctor Who (1963/2005)

Technically, the Doctor doesn’t count as a “male” character, but since he has been presenting as male up until recently, I needed to include him. I chose the Tenth Doctor because he is the one that broke my heart the most. I adored Nine but he was there too short, and I do love Eleven and Twelve a lot, and Thirteen absolutely owns my heart, Ten has just always been the one that made me cry the most. I loved this era of Doctor Who, I loved how sad and hopeful he was, how heartbroken and yet determined to help wherever it was needed. Doctor Who is always that show, when I return to it, I am reminded that maybe, humanity and the universe isn’t all that bad.
