I’ve read 10 more books let’s get a rec list here for future use for people to look up on my page or alone.
Disclaimer:I think reviews and opinions show a lot about who you are and your life exp so. I am a woman lover who is 30 with ADHD. I am cisgendered she/her. I like listening to books on my drive in and out of work. I’ve read and watched a lot of scifi and fantasy and these books reflect that too.
In order of most loved:
1. Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈⏳ Historical Romance. this beautifully crafted novel moved me to tears. Set in a historical, mundane world, it captures the essence of the original while offering a fresh perspective.
2. Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh 👯♀️🏳️🌈👽🚀now MC Romance very very low I like to think she’s a little bit some where in the ace spectrum but 🥹🥹 Avicenna gives you enough gay vibes trust me. It is a real journey. MC is broken out of her brainwashing and tries to save the Earth and Universe. It’s high Sci-fi fun. I really loved it.
3. The Last Binding Trilogy by Freya Marske 🏳️🌈👯♀️🏳️🌈🪄⏳🔎 Alright each book is from a different intertwined couple’s POV. Each book is very much historical wizard mystery’s found family. Each book has steamy interesting spicy scenes. I find this series more impressive now because I still think about the couples and its universe was fun. Side note the last couple is the best.
4. The Tithenai Chronicles by Foz Meadows 🏳️🌈⏳🪄🔎 it’s more historical than super magical but both books have decent mysteries. It’s about an arranged royal marriage one comes from a conservative country suffering from trauma which we get to see but is treated respectfully and not harped on and the other is a warrior who is a little neurospicy. So Velasin is so dear to me I forgive a lot because he’s baby and I love him. They have non binary characters and disabled characters in the story being treated like people. There is some very spicy scenes in these two books. The new character in the second book so amazing they reminds me of Tennal from Oceans Echo in spirit anyway. I liked them. But his spicy scenes had me blushing for days. A con of this book is it’s very emotional so depression trauma warnings.
5. Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🦹🦜 I can’t believe I forgot to do a review of this one considering I really enjoyed it. So it’s YA dystopian Latin America folklore kind of like superhero and god goddess. Really heart warming found family coming of age. Also in the vein of hunger games etc. I loved the universe and the structure of the world. Each character was well developed throughout the book. Main character is someone you want to see succeed. I’m so excited for book 2. Lots of neurospicy peeps represented in my opinion.
6. Simon Snow Trilogy by Rainbow Rowell🏳️🌈🪄🧛🏻🐲 Also YA feel book one has a lot of Harry Potter jabs but it’s not a direct parody. I also think in book 2 3 they take jabs at diff genres which was fun. The series is very funny has perspective from all the characters. The universe is interesting. Romance is decent. Lovable characters. It isn’t good to think too hard about anything.
7. The Unbroken by CL Clark 👯♀️⏳👑🪄 this book would be higher up if I wasn’t iffy on the main couple individually I’d rank both leads pretty high on best characters. It’s a book about colonialism political magic rebellion found family. It’s action packed it’s interesting with a good mystery. A disabled main character and a more male presenting lesbian with is something new. Touraine is going to do what Touraine thinks in her heart while Luca serves with her brain and wallet.
8. So this is ever after by f. t. Lukens 🏳️🌈👯♀️🪄👑⏳ Does what it says on the tin is YA. Medieval setting with standard fantasy quest group. Very easy read.
9. Out of the Blue by Jason June 🏳️🌈🧜🏻♂️🎬🎓very YA vibes. Very romance. About a nonbinary mer person on their journey out of the ocean to help a human and a film obsessed gay chubby human on his journey to get over a relationship. I would have this book ranked higher except for the ending and School vibes do kind of make me cringe.
10. Temperature of You and Me by Brain Zepka 🏳️🌈🦹🔎 about a boy whose skin is fire and human who works at a dairy queen. Mystery is weak some holes in the plot.Romance very immature. School age kids.
Okay so audible had a sale anddd I got a couple titles on there (if I have to spend a fortune on gas and tolls I’ll spend a small one on the books that keep me sane) and I have 4 Libby audiobooks checked out. I still have a hard time with wlw books. Or too much thinking. It needs to hit a sweet spot for me since I’m usually driving in hard conditions so can’t use the super brain on the story. Anyways any suggestions or recs would be welcomed!!!

Live Thoughts on S3e2
- A music room scene that wasn’t soul crushing for once!
- I love everything about Felice's scenes
- Sarah learning to drive is interesting to me. Personally can’t drive because my autistic sensory issues makes it too overwhelming but her autistic traits seem to be more social-related since they haven't shown sensory stuff with her. It's nice for me to see autistic differences as well as similarities.
- Wille in the choir really caught me off guard
- Fight was more funny than anything
- August's such a dick for telling Wille he didn’t know Erik that’s his brother wtf
- Frog snow globe appearance
- Don’t post the song arghh It’s giving the hateful commenters what they want a reaction out of you goshh. Why isn’t his account on private too?!
- Wille picking Simon up so cute
- I love Maddie’s “what about the nonbinary ones” and just bringing up the cisheteronormativity in general
- Stella and Rosh!! wish it was Maddie x Rosh and that they got more screen time but still very happy
- Fredricka is definitely jealous
- I like how they showed the class differences. Rosh, Simon and Ayub working and staying home over the holidays, while the Hillerska kids are travelling. And the girls talking about how travelling is their passion like that’s not even something possible to want for most of us. Wille recognising this too and saying he’s working to make them feel comfortable (or at least that's how I saw it)
- Really glad the privilege and class differences is coming up in Wilmons relationship. Thought this would come up if Rosh and Stella started dating too since Stella likes to show off privilege a lot more than Wilhelm but didn't expect it to come up right away.
- Wille having a very main character in a drama series moment whenever something is wrong in their relationship will never not be funny to me, he needs them to be happy and in love all the time
- That lake view is so pretty! I wanna go to sweden
- "You have to be ready" ooo
- This episode addressed a lot of things which is interesting: classism, Nils and August talking about the homophobic initiation, racism as well was interesting don't have much to comment on it because I don't have any personal experience with that but the fact that Felice shared something really personal and none of the girls understood it/didn't know what to say seems quite accurate? and that they probably never even noticed until she brought it up too

please tell me about trans baz
THIS MESSAGE IS LIKE A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL TO ME!!!
okokokok so. Ok. There's two ways to look at this. Baz as a more binary trans man. And baz on the nonbinary spectrum. Consider both.
for starters i need to preface this by saying using a middle name and then shortening it is EXTREMELY trans behaviour. as is using last names to refer to other people. (Snow, Bunce.) I know because i am trans and have done both.
But listen baz is described by simon as such a masculine figure throughout but ESPECIALLY in books two and three - simon describes baz as "growing into himself" which is just...so incredibly trans coded. His beautiful suits combined with his long hair gives him a slight gnc flavour that just describes to me someone on the nonbinary/transmasc spectrum. Someone like me ok? I'll admit it. Another quote along these lines : "he proved himself as a man and as a magician." Now this is not to say us transmascs need to prove ourselves, but baz's background and particularly his relationship with his father means he probably does feel the need to prove himself as a man, and simon likely sees that desire in him.
Going back to Watford for a moment, we know the buildings recognise gender - i would presume magic would separate gender from sex. And so we have an eleven year old Baz, who has already expressed his transness to his family, having his gender affirmed by his mother's second home and burial place. It must have been the most complicated and emotional experience....and the greatest wakeup call to his father.
Simon's reaction....interesting and difficult. We know he had a chronic case of foot-in-mouth disease but a golden heart. I can imagine he didn't even Realise his roomate was trans (baz infamously never dressed in front of him) possibly until the moment in the forest. Baz absolutely hysterical over Simon being straight and does he know that Baz is a man? Does he acknowledge that?? And simon absolutely baffled like What Do You Mean. You Are Just The Boy I'm Kissing. And thus it all comes out and Simon never once questions that his boyfriend is a man.
But baz also LOVES fashion and I see him in skirts and such as he becomes more comfortable in his skin and more assertive in his masculinity.
I also see Fiona absolutely giving this boy his first suit. I see Watford giving him a boy's uniform and him crying. I see his cigarettes and his drinking in fifth year and all the pain he's in because he's so twisted up about being in his own skin. I see him. I just. I could go on forever.

obviously you love heartstopper, but what are some of your other favorite romances, either books or tv? 🌷
okay, lemme think... for book romances i really loved:
"much ado about nothing" by shakespeare - it is so funny and so sweet, i also recommend the adaptation with catherine tate and david tennant, they are both amazing in it!
"hani and ishu's guide to fake dating" by adiba jairgirdar is a sweet story about two girls who cared more about each other than they originally thought. also great representation - both of the main characters are queer ofc, but also bengali and one is muslim
"red, white and royal blue" by casey mcquiston - a classic at this point, hilarious, and great representation
the simon snow trilogy by rainbow rowell - an enemies-to-lovers mlm story set in a world where magic exists, and the magic system is amazingly crafted.
"the song of achilles" by madeline miller - a heartbreaking love story of achilles and patroclus, the myth told through a queer lens.
crier's war duology by nina varela - wlw love story with a touch of nonbinary representation. it is set in a dystopian world where the world is ruled by automae, humanoids made to be perfect. one of the protagonists, crier is an automa, the other, ayla, is her human servant.
and when it comes to tv shows:
"she-ra and the princesses of power" - a wlw love story is the backbone to the whole plot set in a magical world called etheria. having suddenly discovered her magical powers, adora struggles to figure out her destiny. GREAT representation in terms of queerness and race.
"young royals" - you are probably familiar with it, heartstopper and yr are like a big family now. it is a love story of a prince and a boy who meet at a school in sweden. great representation, great actors, great plot!
"the owl house" - the sweetest story of young wlw love, AMAZING representation in terms of all types of queerness and races. unfortunately cancelled in its prime, but i have faith that the ending will do the story justice.
i know both "she-ra and the princesses of power" and "the owl house" don't have romance as the main-main plot points, but i still think these have my favourite couples, as well as some of my fave stories set around them. if you read or watched any of these, let me know, and tell me some of your favourites, too!

My relationship with the Simon Snow series is...painful, to say the least.
2020, the year of hell, was when I finally caved and got the first book. I had been told by my other queer friends it was good, and it was. It was one of the best thing I had ever read. I flipped through Carry On in less than a day. I watched as Baz struggled with his feelings and Simon Snow claimed to hate him. I felt the anger of their fights, the personal digs hitting right in that angsty sweet spot. I read through chapter 61 slowly, ever so slowly, just to absorb everything I could. Simon saving Baz's life with a kiss. It was the best first kiss scene I had ever seen. I watched them fumble, I felt the hurt as Simon gave up everything to reverse the damage his father had done. And it was everything.
I immediately got the second book and nosedived right in. It was depressing, seeing what had happened, and I knew I needed the third after the cliffhanger. So I waited, anxiously checking for updates and pre-order dates. And when the third book finally came, I was ecstatic to dive right in.
Seeing them build back to where they could go was beautiful. Fixing something damaged, together, was something I never thought I would see. Simon and Baz were meant for each other.
I was dragged out of the fantasy by my hair with one little word.
it.
I'm nonbinary. I've never really felt like one gender, and I've been the happiest I've been in years. It made sense to call a demon and 'it', but when she referred to a person? When she talked about Simon, a baby Simon who nobody knew the gender of, she called him and 'it'. After everything, he was made into an 'it'.
I finished the book. I picked it up one more time, then I stopped thinking about the series entirely. I knew about the controversies surrounding the author, but this was it. This solidified everything. I was never going to be able to see this series the same way again. The books that had pulled me through the hell that was 2020 broke my trust, and were never going to get it back.
I dream of having a romantic relationship one day. Maybe I will. But I don't want one where someone will be okay with calling me an 'it'.

She moves her hand around in her purse for a few seconds, then hands me a heart-shaped pin. I just stare at it. Pink, purple, blue-
It's the bisexual flag.
— Uhm, are you sure you got the right pin? Did you mean to hand me a nonbinary one or something?

what, you thought Rainbow was the only one with an announcement for today? 🌈
(click for better quality!)
IT IS FINALLY UPON US
TRANS MAGES WEEK 2022 🏳️⚧️
March 25th (friday) to March 31st (tuesday)!
Late works will be shared until April 10th!
Oh WOW! We are officially BACK, baby! A whole year later, too!
And with new art inspired by Snow for Christmas, because I just had to add a skirt to turtleneck!Baz (and he clearly has boobs in the official art idc)
In case you don't know us...
The transmagesweek is an event for sharing your favorite trans* headcanons in the carryonverse / World of Mages!
Our goal is to not only encourage the creation of trans-centric content, but also to promote trans creators themselves!
Cis creators are more than welcome to participate, though :)
Any and all kinds of fan creations (art, fanfiction, moodboards, headcanons / drabbles, etc) are allowed! No restrictions. Create whatever you want, however you want!
To submit your works, tag your posts with #transmagesweek / #transmagesweek22 💖
If you want to make sure we see your entry, tag our user (@trans-mages)! Also, you may add any works you create (not only written works) to our official Ao3 Collection Link coming soon ^^
Create as much or as little as you want! You can participate every day of the week or post only once – it’s completely up to you!
We don't have daily prompts for this round, just a general theme for the week:
✨Celebration✨
That meaning... celebration days / holidays? festivities and events? celebrating oneself's identity? All of that, and none of that! Feel free to use the theme "Celebration" in your creations however you want (or even just ignore it completely!)
And you can, of course, draw inspiration from last year's transmagesweek daily prompts too <3
We'll also post a few leftover prompts from the Transmages Prompt Fest list in the next few days, so feel free to claim any of these to use in this new event! (and be sure to credit the creator if it isn't an anonymous prompt)
You’re free to create works with heavy themes, but please be considerate and ALWAYS add trigger and content warnings on the post itself and its tags! We won’t be reblogging such sensitive content without the proper warnings.
ALWAYS tag violence, blood, mature/explicit content, any and all forms of transphobia, and any other general triggers. If you write anything sexual and post it on tumblr, keep it under the cut. This event is supposed to be a safe space for everyone, especially minors, and we won't share any content that jeopardizes that.
We also won’t be accepting any kind of content that shares the character’s deadname or has scenes where someone openly deadnames them mentioning their deadname explicitly. If you wish to include deadnaming in your work, please refrain from mentioning the deadname itself, and tag it with the proper trigger / content warnings.
At the moment, Genderbending (making canon female characters trans males and vice versa) isn't allowed in this event. If you want to depict a trans woman character, pick a character who's actually a woman in the canon universe! That being said, you can make canon female characters nonbinary transmasc (but not male aligned), and canon male characters nonbinary transfeminine (but not female aligned). We will also not accept any works that erase canon rep. Canon sapphic / wlw characters have to still be sapphic / wlw, and same goes for achillean / mlm characters.

I rlly like how you've written a few nonbinary Baz fics! If you're still taking prompts, maybe a fic where Baz comes out as nb to Simon while they're dating? <3
Sorry for the delay with this one, Nonnie. I actually wrote it when I first received your prompt, but I forgot to post it. I hope you like it! <3
*
Baz
Simon is rambling on about his day - an assignment he’s struggling with and some drama he overheard at the bakery - but I’m struggling to pay attention.
He’s a lot happier and enthusiastic than he was for the first couple of years after we left Watford, and I’m happy for him. He has really come into his unknown and found happiness despite all the shit life has thrown at him. I’m proud of him.
Right now, though, all I can think about is something I’ve been wanting to tell him for a few months now. I’m nonbinary, and I don’t know how to tell him.
I’ve looked it up about a thousand times now - how to tell your loved ones you’re nonbinary - but none of it seemed all that useful to me. I tried writing down what I wanted to say to Simon, but the words wouldn’t come. And it’s not like I need to explain to him what it means to be non-binary — he learned that from Shep — but it’s one thing to accept others as non-binary; it’s a whole other thing to accept someone you’ve know most of your life as one thing as something completely different.
I’m afraid that he’ll look at me differently once I tell him, like I’m not the same person he fell in love with.
Simon is still talking, and I take in a deep shaky breath as I look down at my hands, at the pink nail polish that adorns my nails.
Simon has been nothing but complimentary about my nails or the way I occasionally throw on a top that isn’t normally perceived as masculine. But appearance isn’t the same thing as identity. Just because he likes the way I look, it doesn’t mean he’ll like who I am.
“Simon, I need to tell you something,” I blurt out in the middle of the story he was telling me.
“Is everything okay?” He asks, looking a little worried.
“Yes. I just...It’s pride month.”
“I know. We’ve been selling our pride pastries like crazy this month, and people seem to have suddenly begun to notice the gay flag that I have worn every day to work for the past year.”
I nod and take another deep breath, struggling to take in enough air. I feel tears burning at the backs of my eyes. They always come with this sense of panic, but I refuse to let them spill at this moment. I have to say this.
“Simon.” I pause, clenching my hands into fists to keep them from shaking. “I’m non-binary.”
I can barely breathe as I wait for his response even though it comes a moment later.
“Oh,” his tone is neutral, and I think I might combust into flames right here if he doesn’t say something soon. He reaches out to squeeze my hand, and I draw my eyes up to meet his. The look on his face is so soft that it takes my breath away. “I’m glad you told me.”
“You don’t seem surprised. It doesn’t bother you?”
He shrugs, ever the one for words. “You’re still you. You’re still the person I fell in love. Now I just know a little more about who you are.” He pauses briefly before adding, “I’m glad you felt comfortable enough to tell me.”
The tears do start to fall then.
Simon is saying the most perfect things, and it’s then that I realize I’m going to marry this guy one day. I could never find someone else as caring and stubborn and perfect as him. He’s it for me. He’s my person, and I’ll never feel this way about anyone else.
I can feel a stupid smile growing on my face, and I lean forward to kiss Simon
I won’t ask him to marry me today, but someday. Perhaps one day soon.
“I love you,” I say, pulling out of the kiss.
“I love you, too.” I’m still relieved to hear him say that, even though he has already said that he accepts me for who I am. It lifts all of my worries off of me. It’s a relief to know that I can be my true self with him.

First Dress
Pairing: Trixie/Keris
Rating: G
Summary: Keris wears a dress for the first time! And goes dancing with her partner at the Leavers Ball.
AN: I wrote this for the @trans-mages prompting fest, and this prompt came from the amazing @wellbelesbian (It features trans woman Keris, and nonbinary Trixie)
Read on Ao3 or below!
-
I must look like a right idiot standing here in front of the mirror—we only have twenty minutes before the Leavers Ball starts but I'm frozen, dress held limply in my hands.
I'm afraid I'll put it on and it'll feel wrong. No, I suppose I'm really afraid of how right it will feel to put on. I'm afraid I'll never be able to go back, which is a ridiculous thought, I don't want to go back into the closet–and it isn't as if avoiding dresses my whole life will make me feel less like a woman. But still...
"Keris?" Trixie turns to me, lipstick held up to her lips. She looks at me with raised eyebrows.
My roommate, Amanda, has already gone down to meet up with her boyfriend (he's actually leaving this Leavers Ball, Trixie and I have another year at Watford) so I don't feel weird talking about how I feel with just Trixie in the room, she's always so understanding.
"I'm scared," I admit, meeting their eyes in the mirror.
Trixie looks at me sympathetically. She doesn't have to ask about what. We've talked about this a lot; Trixie was the first person I ever came out to; as a woman and as a lesbian. And though Trixie's better at hiding it, she has some of the same insecurities as me. We've been there for each other through a lot.
"You'll look so amazing, Keris!" they move closer to me, wrapping around one of my arms. "I promise. And if you hate it, I can just magick you a new outfit, okay? We could have just done that from the start like I suggested..." they say in a teasing tone, gesturing to the blue fabric in my hands, "instead of spending ages sewing. I mean look how well mine turned out!"
She strikes a pose in her yellow-gold suit, and smiles her big cheesy smile, crinkled-up nose and all.
I roll my eyes, resisting the urge to kiss their adorable face. They're right about her outfit of course, it turned out amazing. But I wanted to make my first dress. My grandma is an amazing seamstress, and I wanted to learn from her. She even gave me an old sewing machine of hers to take to school and practice. Admittedly a full dress—with a pattern I frankensteined out of two other dress patterns—was definitely way above my skill level, but I had fun making it, and I think it turned out alright. (I haven't put on the blasted thing yet. I'm still scared.)
Trixie spins me to face them, and puts a hand on my cheek. I look down to meet her eyes; this close it's really noticeable how much shorter they are than me.
"You'll be okay, honey," Trixie says in her soft voice, gently tugging at the end of some of my long hair. "No matter how you feel in the dress, it's okay. And you're still you, you're still the best person ever, okay?"
I try to look doubtful, but I can't hide the smile she brings to my face. I don't know what I did to deserve such an amazing partner. And of course they're right. I know who I am, feeling a little scared of a dress doesn't change that.
I nod once, then again more confidently. I'm going to be fine.
"Okay, okay, I'll put it on, but turn around-" I shoo her with my hands.
Trixie laughs and turns around, putting their hands over their eyes.
I take a deep breath and quickly throw off my school uniform to step into the dress. The fabric feels lovely. I'm surprised the internal seams aren't scratching me. (I think Trixie spelled them. Sometimes when I took breaks from sewing, I'd see her looking over the unfinished dress, swearing they were just tracking my progress, but I’m pretty sure she was muttering spells.) When I first told Trixie I was going to sew my dress they were horrified at the idea of spending so much time on something that could be done in one minute, it was kind of funny. She's just too impatient sometimes, though I am grateful I had Trixie to sneakily spell my mistakes better. All the stitches and seams are impossibly clean.
I smooth my hands over the dress, then I look up from the ground and stare at my reflection. It's a lovely dress: light powder blue, the top is shaped like something Snow White would wear, and the skirt is made of tulle in the style of a romantic ballet tutu. The bodice even shimmers in the light, which is something I did let Trixie do with her pixie magic. I try not to scream, but I can't help the happy squeal that escapes my mouth. I look like the girl I've wanted to be for years. I might start crying.
"What! What! Can I look?" Trixie asks excitedly. In the mirror I can see them bouncing on their heels.
"Yes," I laugh.
She gasps when she gets a look at me.
"Baby!!" Their smile is huge. "You look amazing!!"
They attack my cheek with kisses but I block her with my hands. I'm still trying to focus on the dress. It fits perfectly. The bodice shapes my torso in a flattering way, the skirt flares out at the perfect spot on my waist. I can't get enough of it. The tulle tickles my knees and then I remember—I can do a skirt twirl!
I spin around and watch the fabric poof out then twist around my bare legs. I'm smiling so wide I think my cheeks are going to crack. I've been wearing the school issued skirts for a few months now, but this is so much better, the fabric is so flow-y. I shake my hips and watch the skirt twist and twirl in the mirror.
"Kerisssss," Trixie squeals, draping an arm over my shoulder. "You look so pretty, can I please kiss you?" they give me puppy dog eyes.
I giggle and nod. She smears her fresh lipstick on me but I don't care. I feel like I'm made of clouds, big fluffy cumulus humilis clouds.
"Oops," Trixie runs their thumb across my lip when we break for air. I'm sure she's just smearing the lipstick more.
"Oops," I repeat before moving in for another kiss.
Eventually we pull away from each other and look at ourselves in the mirror longer. Trixie is stunning in their suit, it's hard to resist smearing her lipstick even more.
When I bought the fabric for my dress Trixie bought some goldish-yellow vinyl fabric and used spells to form it into the suit she has on now. It's wide, but not in a baggy way. They've got on a white, silk, pirate-looking shirt underneath the suit jacket and the blue flower I gave her pinned to their lapel. Her hair is dyed blue to match my dress. I told them not to do that but she insisted we match in some way. To make it fair I added some yellow yarn twists to my hair twists. Looking at us in the mirror is like watching puzzle pieces fall into place. Like this is who we're supposed to be, and who we're supposed to be with.
I glance at the clock and realize we only have a minute before the Leavers Ball starts.
"Shit!" I shout—Trixie needs to fix their make-up, and I haven't even started on mine.
We make it to the ball, twenty minutes late. "Fashionably late" as Trixie says.
My nerves come back as we enter the courtyard where the Leavers Ball is being held. I'm worried about being in public in a dress. I'm worried about what people might say or do, even though so far everyone at school has been pleasant. I try to focus on the decorations to distract myself.
Fairy lights are twisted into the vines that grow on the pergola overhead. Lovely little pink flowers blossom from the vines and the fairy lights make some of them glow. Some students are already dancing, but most people are standing on the edges, or sitting at tables. The round tables are covered in purple and green table clothes—normally I dislike Watford's colors, but they've gone with pastels, which makes them a lot prettier in my opinion. Each table has candles in the center that have been spelled to float a few inches above the table.
My roommate waves us over to where she's sitting with her boyfriend. We chat for a bit about Watford, and life after school. Other people drift in and out of the conversation, saying hi and exchanging compliments. Everyone looks great tonight. Still, it's hard to stay focused on the conversation. I try not to get in my head about things but I can't stop fidgeting. Trixie notices and tries to help.
"Let's dance!" they exclaim, pulling me towards the other moving students. But I resist.
"I'm thirsty," I say, redirecting us towards the punch table. It's mostly an excuse to avoid dancing, but I also do want some punch.
Basilton Pitch is lurking in the corner near the table, I smile at him politely, reaching for a cup.
"Hi Baz!" Trixie waves happily, even though she knows he finds her annoying. I'll never stop admiring her ability to not be bothered by other people's opinions like that.
Basilton nods and tips his plastic cup towards us.
"Hello ladies," he says coolly, "you both look lovely."
"Thank you," Trixie and I say at the same time.
"You look nice as well," I add.
"Thank you," Basilton says, like he didn't need me to tell him that, but I think he's hiding a small smile. He's never officially said it, as far as I know, but I've always gotten the vibe that he was queer. I think we understand each other, at least about this.
"Tell him the cool thing-" my girlfriend nudges me with their elbow "-about your dress."
"The dress has pockets," I say, putting down my cup to shove my hands into the spots where the pockets are.
I doubt Pitch cares, but I do it anyway, just to see Trixie go crazy over it, again.
"Pockets!! And she sewed it herself!" Trixie's arm tightens around me.
Basilton actually smiles at this. "That's quite impressive. And the dress suits you very well."
Before anything more can be said Trixie is waving bye to the Pitch heir and pulling me around to say hi to someone else. We mingle some more and I will myself to loosen up a little. I focus on how nice it feels to be in a dress. I’m so much more comfortable than when I had to wear suits to things like this. And I think I've gotten more compliments tonight on this dress (and my sewing skills which Trixie makes sure to point out to everyone), than I have in the past year. It helps to be reminded that so many people here are supportive of me—makes it easier to enjoy myself without worry.
Trixie begs to dance with me so I finally agree. I've never liked dancing much, my limbs are too long and awkward to look good dancing, but Trixie takes to it like a fish in water. She's not the best technical dancer, but her enthusiasm and joy more than make up for that. I love watching her like this, it's like looking at a firework that never fades into the night sky. She puts her whole heart into jumping around to whatever generic pop song is playing. I make an attempt to match her energy.
We end up dancing and joking in a little triangle with Rhys until the music shifts to a slow song. Trixie gives me a look and before I can excuse us Rhys fake gags and rolls away, saying he needs some water.
Trixie pulls me close to her by the waist. I take one of her hands, and place my other hand on their shoulder. She's shorter than me, especially now since I'm wearing heels—so I place a kiss on the top of her head. Their short hair tickles my lips.
She nuzzles her nose into my collar and sighs. I don't recognize the song playing, but Trixie softly hums along to it. I'm not sure they're even aware they're doing it. I don’t point it out, in case that would make her stop.
"You alright?" Trixie asks, pulling away slightly to look up at me.
I nod. "More than."
Neither of us can really slow dance, so we just sway together in time with the music. My heart is so full, I might drown in these feelings.
"Good," they beam at me. "You deserve the best, Keris."
I try to ignore the flurry of butterflies that stir in my stomach when she says that.
"You feel good?" I ask, though I know the answer. It's practically written in huge sparkly letters across her face.
"I feel amazing!" Trixie answers with their signature enthusiasm.
"Good," I say, leaning down for a quick kiss. Their lips are soft, and warm.
"You're amazing," I say, pressing our foreheads together. Her arms rest on my waist now. "And thank you for helping me be who I am."
Trixie wraps me in a tight hug. I wish I could feel like this forever.
I haven't said it yet, but I love them—so much. Trixie is one of the best people I know, and she's always seen me for who I am. I want to spend forever with them. I can only hope she feels the same about me.
