Prompt for February 7: Miss Me?

In the green light of the dark mark, the house looks diseased, as though it might be sick any moment. The Death Eaters are doing their level best to make it happen, casting curses at the foundations. Tonks has managed to put out the fire the Death Eaters tried to start, but if the rest of the Order doesn't come quickly she might have to abandon ship, so to speak.

It's a pretty house. Reminds them of their father's parents house, which is probably why the Death Eaters want to destroy it so badly.

"Stupefy!" someone shouts. Tonks ducks the stunner easily. Beneath the mask, all they can see is light hair. The voice sounds vaguely reminiscent of someone she knew in Hogwarts--decent guess, they're probably young. Not calling your attacks is one of the first things Moody teaches in Auror training.

Tonks is surprised when the young Death Eater lets out a gasp of pain. They haven't cast any hexes--someone on the Death Eater's side must be punishing the troops for incompetence.

She manages to get a stunner of her own to hit. The young Death Eater crumples. But Tonks' own shield breaks immediately after. They duck the curse and swear under their breath.

"Don't be wasting time with swears," comes a cry of contempt. For a heart-stopping moment, Tonks is certain it must be Sirius. The voice sounds so similar.

Then they remember.

She casts a spell to break Disillusionment. By some miracle, it hits.

This resemblance is worse. It takes half a second for her to remember that no, these are the wrong features, this isn't her mother. Andromeda has never smiled quite like this, with blood on her teeth.

Bellatrix takes advantage of that hesitation. Tonks winces in pain as they're struck by--schoolyard hexes? Painful, yes, but nothing like the magic they know Bellatrix is capable.

"So good to see you again, Nymphadora," Bellatrix says, her voice strangely soft, like a caress. It contrasts obscenely with the bright light of her spellcasting. "If your mother had done her duty, you would have called me Auntie."

"Don't call me Nymphadora," Tonks says, and casts another Stunner. Bellatrix ignores it, as though she's brushing off a fly. She must be holding back. Tonks doesn't like the thought of that. They try to suppress it. Fight the fight you're in, not the fight you want, Moody had always said.

"Oh, but that's your name, the name your mother gave you. Haven't I a right to say it? You must never forget your name, dear," says Bellatrix. She follows this up with a blood-boiling curse Tonks is barely able to block--but they do block it. Sirius had thrown around curses of that caliber sometimes, when they were training together. Bellatrix is clearly a very talented fighter. If she weren't so terrifying, this could almost be a training match. Tonks could almost be having fun. They feel like a traitor.

"You're not my family," Tonks says. A waste of breath, but it must be said, so they feel like themself again.

"Shame," Bellatrix says. "Haven't you missed me?"

Something i think about everyday is how Tonks should've been genderfluid, not in a like "every shapeshifter should be genderfluid" way, because thats untrue, i think it'd just fit their vibe to be either enby or genderfluid? Like they would've slayed that so much

this may seem random but I was scrolling your blog and one of your recent posts was about what got you into radfem ideology and I wanted to add my own story cause it was similar.

I remember having blogs on here for various fandoms and being around when the push to headcanon every other character as trans came about. coincidentally, it was always the taller, broader women that got labeled as trans women (but always in some progressive light like they were bestowing them the "honor").

at first, I just kept myself out of it. I didn't know enough about being trans to add my own opinion. but then, on my blogs, I would get asks about "gender headcanons" (do you remember those? jfc) and I would feel pressured to make at LEAST one trans, if not nonbinary, even though it all seemed so redundant.

I ended up removing myself from fandom culture completely until very recently. I keep my opinions separate from my new fandom blog, for my own sanity, but it does irritate me to see that this obsession with every character being queer is still alive and well. and yet us actual gay people are just supposed to pretend it's not a trend.

Oh my god the gender headcanons 😭 I literally hated them. I remember when I was deep into the Loki show fandom ; it was literally impossible not to headcanon Loki and Sylvie as trans, non binary or genderfluid. That was ALL people were talking about. Just because Sylvie is a strong and badass female character, she of course had to be a trans woman or at least some sort of non binary. And obviously you couldn't say you disagreed, or you were an evil TERF. People would spam the tags and the discord servers with this, and send you asks to ask you what were your gender headcanons, and you couldn't say you just saw them as normal women and men.

Fandoms are so obsessed with gender. I read fics sometimes, OK, I like it, actually. And when you look for fanfictions you literally cannot spend two seconds without seeing tags like "trans Ronald Weasley", "genderfluid Nymphadora Tonks" and shit like that. Crazy.

People are obsessed with making characters "queer". They'll turn every character into some nuance of trans or non binary, often poly and pansexual too. Everything about the characters then becomes related to "queerness" or "gender" - the way they act, dress, speak, everything they do, say or like. They're no more depth or intersting personalities, it's just "queer uwu". And you have, of course, to headcanon some characters as trand or enby, or you're boring and possibly terfy.

Also I agree with you - I notice it's always the characters that are even just a bit gnc that get headcanoned as non binary, especially female characters. Sylvie isn’t a nice pretty little princess who gives up on everything for her man and her outfit isn’t sexualized ? Trans. Tonks has short hair ? Non binary! This masculine female character ? Trans of course. Sooo annoying.

I removed myself from fandom spaces too lol. Because of their obsession with gender, but also their misogyny in general. Female characters are treated like shit by fandoms. They get ignored, vilanized, killed off/pushed out of the way for male characters, treated like sexual objects... I just decided to abandon my side blogs and to leave the fandom discord servers I was in. I can't enjoy fandom in such conditions.

Three generations of trans/nonbinary/gender questioning Tonks-Lupins.

This fic is more of a "canon defiant" fic than a "fuck canon" fic, but I think with jkr escalating her level of transphobic awfulness to new, extraordinary heights nothing says "fuck canon" than writing all of her canon couples as actually queer and trans and integrating queer history and queer joy and queer grief into the universe she created.

Ted Tonks, Nymphadora Tonks, and Teddy Tonks-Lupin are all trans dykes. It's just a fact.

Cygnus's Failure (Sirius & Cygnus, 3k, T)

In December 1981, Cygnus tries, and fails, to get his nephew out of Azkaban.

I write a lot of canon-compliant fic, but I think this is the only fic of mine that really tries to solve a problem of canon: Sirius's lack of trial. I think it's somewhat realistic that the Ministry would want a scapegoat for Voldemort and have someone to put in prison and blame the whole thing on in November 1981. I don't think it's unrealistic that Sirius does not have his say in court. BUT I do think it's unrealistic that the entire Black family would allow their sole remaining male descendent to go to Azkaban when we know most wealthy purebloods were able to talk their way out of Azkaban (including pre-attack on the Longbottoms Bellatrix!)

So, rather than Sirius going to Azkaban without a trial solely because he's abandoned by everyone, what if he goes to Azkaban partly because he's an insanely stubborn man who is overwhelmed with guilt and who refuses any connection with his blood family and who thinks his only chance to see a certain werewolf is if he remains in prison...

This fic was inspired by two pieces of meta (the first proposing that the Longbottoms were attacked well after 1981 and the second on the Black family response to Sirius being imprisoned). Note that this fic takes place before the attack on the Longbottoms.

Duty (Sirius/Regulus, 2k, M)

Regulus knew what a duty was.

I started writing this fic because my emotions were just a total stormy mess while taking the train down to visit my parents, and I needed to displace them somewhere else. I didn't think I would actually be able to turn it into something publishable but then it seamlessly became a Regulus character study fic with just a couple rounds of editing. I think the canon compliance of it helps disguise the way it's frighteningly close to a self-insert fic.
