Aether Chapter 23
FOCUS AND SCATTER ARE IN THE SHIRO! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
Honestly its so nice to see them again... in a place that isn't their own story. Because I have seen them their since last posting about Scatter. Anyways.
I'm might have wiggled in my seat a little when Maggie went straight to sitting next to Varsha only considering the fact that generally she sits with Sierra AFTER Sierra had taken a seat on the other side of the table. The wiggling ceased as Maggie started feeling a little sad about how complicated things are with Sierra and how they might not keep being friends if they can't figure this out.
I fucking loved the mission recording. I knew I was in for a treat the second it opened with Lori threatening Focus with Scatter's safe return. I chuckled at Nomi face palming over Danny and Ayanda's low stakes domestic af gay drama while most of the rest of the table was cracking up over it. I also awwwed when Varsha looked soft over the little scrap of intimacy on display.
Maggie 110% should have taken her hand then. Sierra would get over it. Probably.
I almost jumped out of my chair when Danny mentioned Chance and Maggie fucking caught it but dismissed it as odd coincidence. Only almost because I was doubling as a cat bed at the time but god damn. The sound I make when I couldn't jump up got me such an offended look from Merlin because I still disturbed his rest.
It was also funny seeing Danny gripe about how crowded brunch has gotten. It didn't feel like she was being particularly genuine, just churlish.
My new want is for Chance to message Maggie like "I'm gonna be in Sun City to catch up with friends wanna join" and then have Maggie, Ashley, and Eurion rock up at the same time like "why are you here?" and lowkey doing the spiderman point.
Honestly my want is actually just for Maggie and Ashley to realise its the same damn Chance by the end of the book, anything and everything else would just be icing.
I know that it is very important that Maggie sorts out this stuff with Sierra but Varsha went full sad puppy mode when Maggie agreed that she and Sierra had to have a talk and that hurt my heart so... Maggie should told Sierra to wait and taken Varsha back to her room, ideally leading her there by holding her hand.

Il progetto è diretto da Shinsuke Yanagi (Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?, Ryuuou no Oshigoto!) presso lo studio Project No.9 (Le ragazze anelano alla landa selvaggia, Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?).

Aether Chapter 22
Nomi... You are dealing with enough gay drama with Ashley and Hannah. Don't let yourself get dragged into the gay drama of Sierra and Maggie.
Actually that isn't entirely fair. Nomi knows Maggie is a math whizz and given what they are working on if Sierra says "Maggie might know" then the smart play is to call Maggie.
She's on thin ice for not giving Maggie until tomorrow properly though (even if it was a forgone conclusion) is rude when you're calling her in to identify some math. I realise these is something of a time crunch around finding Garrett and Co. before they summon xenophobic aliens to obliterate the world but like Fractal or at least an algorithm comparing those notes to other notes taken by Beth that were better labelled. Idk. I might just be feeling grouching because we interrupted Chance time for this.
Sierra could barely look Maggie in the eye at the start of the scene, but when they were both given space to focus on work they both settled back into their normal friend pattern. That could be a good thing, if they get around to having proper conversation later when they've both had time to breathe. Or it could be really messy if they just try to act like it never happened. That doesn't seem to be their vibe though.
Nomi is so fucking relieved when Maggie says yes. This woman is Under Stress.
It's awesome that Maggie is getting a hero suit, but Alan from marketing insulted Naomi and Chance's super suit and Vera started out by pestering Nomi about redesigning her very personal (and frankly already badass sounding) power armour and that set the tone for my attitude towards these designers for the whole meeting. My conclusion is that both of these people are Straight straight. Tracy seemed ok but then Tracy's only real contributions were estimated production time.
Thank goodness Ashley was there to be someone in world rolling their eyes at that bullshit. She also probably saved Maggie a lot of hassle so quickly finding a good symbol for her because oooh boy I shudder to think what Alan might have gone for. Something bland that tested well with middle aged conservative white women in the american mid west.

Aether Chapter 16
The fucking audacity to end the last chapter on a talking cat and then start the next with absolutely 0 cats present or spoken off.
Like I'm glad Maggie is getting recognition for how many lives she saved. And also that she's having that moment of "holy shit I can help way more than I thought and I didn't even get into some awful fight" moment. It's so good.
BUT WHERE THE FUCK, AND WHAT THE FUCK IS MAXINE!?
Hannah seemed like she'd rather eat a crate of lemons than go into Maggie's head again and risk feed back but she did it and it was very helpful so good on her.
We finally have the answer as to how in the fuck Garrett is gonna come back into this and wow. Wonder if Sierra will do anything stupid when she finds out.
The discovery came with A LOT a math. I'm glad Maggie got to have that whiteboard she wanted back at the start this time around but broadly I was smiling and nodding politely much like the rest of the table. The only reason I'm not an english major is because there is (hypothetically) more job opportunities as a media major and also it lets me try out a bunch more things. The point is I am not a numbers or physics brained person and this was a lot of physics brain stuff.
That said it was covered in a very coherent way and less confusing than a lot of science fiction logic behind powers and disastrous weapons usually is. What I'm saying here is more to the tune of I don't know enough to have snappy comments about the majority of the scene.
I did get the Dune reference though.
And I thought it was nice that Varsha got Sierra on the intercom to kick Maggie in the head and connect the reference. Hannah could afford to take notes.
And then we end on Maggie realising she's under an NDA. It's come up a few times that she has/had security clearance though never mentioned what for, but did let us know it was so secret she didn't even tell Sierra. It even came up at the start of this chapter with her accepting Nomi's request not to say shit to Sierra until after Sierra consents to a telepathic interrogation.
I am excited to find out what the project was, because I bet Nomi and Elisa did not take that "I can't tell you" well.

Aether Chapter 11
I can't tell if the university is just aggressively covering its ass in the classic "we have to maintain our rep so we're gonna drop all pretence of inclusivity and revert to our white boys club to do so" thing that basically every university seems to do when they feel even vaguely threatened, or if there are members of the board who are in on/supporting Hastings' illegal experiments.
I had an excellent time imagining Nomi giving the awesome line from the Leverage pilot "The Patriot Act applies here, my friend! Sir, I can take your underpants." That is certainly the energy I imagine her telling the board that her people would handle collecting Sierra and Maggie's things.
I wonder how long Maggie and Chase can keep up their sorta secret chats. Mostly I wonder if Maggie is gonna get caught communicating when she shouldn't, or if Chase is gonna say just enough during brunch one day to have Ashley go "what?" and then lead to a quasi-accusational "how do you know Maggie/Bobbie?"
The continuing movie nights between Maggie and Varsha are so sweet. Flirting by getting the cute girl to watch your favourite lesbian media makes for such a cute story.
Poor Junichi is just trying to do his job and Maggie reacts like a kitten who was just told its bath time. It's funny, even if I am ultimately on Maggie's side vis a vis how hellish paperwork is.
Stutter is the most on point and adorable name for this particular super hero and I just want to take a moment to appreciate it.
Maggie's training sounds like A Lot, but she's progressing with it really well. Ashley is being thorough as hell with her training. I think Maggie has moved well beyond basic "make sure she doesn't accidentally kills folks" levels of training. Ashley is probably giving her extra just so that by the time she tries floating the "why not be a superhero" idea she can go, come on you're more than well trained for it ^_^

Aether Chapter 18
I laughed out loud and had to explain to my sister how funny it was that Varsha had head slapped Elisa at super speed. So that was a thing.
^^^ that is as far as I got before getting half a dozen different domestic tasks, then meals, then shopping, then party prep, then balloon fetching, and omfg, I am so tired.
Back to the important stuff.
Every time I had sat down to try and write just about anything I have been reminded that Maggie is the reason Maxine has powers because she's a fucking dork whose mental image of a healthy cat include all her memories of pretending her childhood cat could talk like Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and it delights me every time.
Oh so Focus and Scatter were on the moon. Three lesbian icons together. Post party I am just tired and tipsy enough that I started humming Fly Me to the Moon (So I Can Fight It) to myself. Got some odd looks from the surrounding family but made myself giggle. Anyways, I wonder what the fuck is going on up there. Invasion prep that is hopefully got thwarted.
It is very narratively clear why Maggie doesn't like or want to be a hero. But holy shit baby girl, the way you behaved during every step of that emergency from the time you and Varsha got the call WAS NOT just a by product of safety and first aid training over the course of an education in physics.
The Unitarium is a name that gives me sci fi dystopia vibes. I wonder if Garrett has gone and gotten himself involved with them. They definitely sound like the type of folks who would want their hands on the kind of weapon Garrett has become. Hell, they sound like the kind of group that would be funding the illegal research that started this whole mess in the first place. Right now I reckon they have some kind of ongoing connect with Praetorian.
Nomi is a lot gentler than Banks that is for sure, and she actually takes the time to offer benefits, and explanations about how Maggie might be able to find some balance and keep more of her old life trajectory than she had been expecting. She isn't a soft touch though. She straight up says Varsha's not being sensible with her reassurances that Maggie can just walk away from this life if she wants. Nomi is also the only one who forces Maggie to acknowledge that the choices she makes when people need help are not choices made by people who can and would pass on becoming a superhero.
Truly Nomi would be fully justified using her spot as team leader to toss Hannah and Ashley into couples therapy. Even individual therapy would probably help some at this point. Or locking Hannah and Eurion in a room until Hannah got it through her thick skull that Eurion has basically been trying to wingman for her and get Ashley to woman up and admit her feelings for almost the entire time they have known each other.
I am once again asking who the fuck is Tux and when the hell do we get to meet her? She sounds fun.
It's funny that Nomi's most compelling argument as to why Maggie should sign up is her shovel talk.
Holy fuck I got to the end. It only took what 2 days?

Aether Chapter 10
We learned 3 important things in this chapter:
Industry, badass hero who said fuck it to dealing with corruption and bigotry and made her own successful and iconic superhero team instead, is named Nomi Hashimoto.
I am going to have so much fun watching the slow reworking of Sierra and Maggie's relationship now that Maggie has more confidence in herself and feels more positive more of the time while Sierra only really has memories and knows about the Maggie who hates her body and lives in constant pain.
Varsha is DEFINITELY crushing on Maggie at least a little bit.
The Sierra & Maggie re-negotiation thing is definitely gonna be interesting and possibly angsty. Just because this whole event has left them in VERY different emotional places with Sierra going into depression and grief and Maggie having her world opened up and is tentatively pretty joyful about it even if it does come with some veery heavy concerns and considerations.
It's only gonna get more complicated whenever Garrett shows back.
bonus point number four: Maggie has STRONG opinions and preferences about her chili-cheese steak. And Honestly I respect it.
I feel like between Ayanda's peanut butter noodles, the description of Lou's soup, and this chili-cheese steak order it would be possible to do like A recipe per book. I'm sure there us tasty sounding food mentioned in Transistor and Master of Puppets. Samael's pastrami sandwhiches and donuts in Master of Puppets? Mail Order Bride has some nice sounding food but its all alien food getting compared to close but not quite counter parts. I remember not-sweet potato fries and not-cherry juice.
It's definitely the kind of thing that will circle around in my head until eventually I decide to cook something about it. It's just a question of how long it takes.
