TW//sa (i think)
oui that anon tea reminds me of drama on here a few years ago but i’m kinda lost.
I don’t know about that first paragraph, but from the second one, it sounds like they’re talking about Nolan Patrick.
He got in hot water with his fan base when he comment on an instagram post. It was a news story/link that mentioned Justin Trudeau’s comments about Logan Mailloux, “as a lifelong habs fan, I have to say I am deeply disappointed by the decision. I think it was a lack of judgment by the Canadiens organization” to which Nolan commented something along the lines of “cause justin’s never made a mistake.” No specific reference but people took it to mean the black face. Nolan proceeded to black any fan that called him out or replied to his comment and he eventually deleted it. Should be noted he has never corrected his statement nor shown support for any womens cause.
He was also one of the first players to not use pride tape on his stick (i wanna say like 2019/2020? someone fact check that). this was prior to the Ivan Provorov pride reckoning, but interesting that he and Provy are friends and have played on the same team in junior and pro (Brandon Wheat Kings and Philadelphia Flyers). Fans defended him saying the bright colours moving on the ice could give him migraines due to his history and past head traumas.
As a canadian who works in public policy, dude everyone nit picks on the prime minister. Was it shitty timing? Hell yeah. Necessary? Not a bit. Is Nolan Patrick a person i would consider to have any common sense or basic knowledge about politics or not being a complete bonehead? Absolutely not. There is no evidence pride tape cause migraines, or could be uncomfortable in anyway for players with head injuries to use. Concern for his migraines seems to always ignore that he is playing is a sporting arena with noise and flashing lights as a staple in the show each night. Players were never forced to use the tape during the games, only during warmups.
the reason this irks me: some fans have labelled him “king of lesbians and women”. as a queer woman i hope we correct that. he doesn’t like us and it’s showing.
This was from a while ago that I forgot to post

there will be a stream of consciousness about nolan patrick under the cut talking about the tweets that recently resurfaced and my opinions on them.
this is obviously super disappointing to me as someone who had kinda built their brand on loving nolan patrick. im still in the process of reading what other people have to say and coming to terms with what my own opinion on the situation is. however, there are a few initial thoughts that i had regarding this situation and everything that’s been going on with vince dunn too.
it’s SO important to hold hockey players accountable, regardless of when something was said - whether it was a year ago, or nine years ago. when i was young, i definitely said some awful shit. it doesn’t matter if it comes from a place of ignorance or immaturity; the fact is, words have meaning, regardless of intention. i’m aware the things i have said in the past are extremely harmful and i work every single day to ensure that not only am i not harming marginalized communities, i am also working on being an ally and confronting my own internalized prejudices that develop alongside growing up white and (mostly? idk im still struggling with my sexuality tbh) straight. in my opinion, this is what /every/ person that grew up in a position of privilege needs to do. it starts with holding yourself accountable and facing the uncomfortable realities of what it means to benefit from a society that systemically oppresses marginalized folks.
seeing those nolan patrick tweets was beyond disappointing. as someone who is not gay, i cannot forgive him for those tweets as it is not my place to do so. do i think he is homophobic? i don’t know. granted, i don’t think that tweets from several years ago are at all indicative of who a person is today, but i also don’t know him personally so i can’t, in good conscience, make any judgements on who he is as a person. i want to reiterate that this is in no way me forgiving him.
with all that being said, even if i fully didn’t believe he was homophobic (which again, i have no clue since i do not know him personally), i haven’t really seen much from him advocating on behalf of the lgtbqia+ community. as i mentioned before, i think past actions are less indicative of who you are as a person than present actions. it would be nice to see that, regardless of past tweets, that he has changed and become a vocal ally towards the lgbtqia+ community. maybe he does in his free time, but i haven’t seen anything on social media from him regarding that. i’m not saying he has to be an activist - expecting every public figure to be an activist is unsustainable imo, and is counter productive to the work actual activists are doing - but he can at least be an ally. especially given his use of past slurs, i feel as though it’s the least he could do. if he is an ally in his personal life, he should be public about it. it would be incredibly powerful to have another outspoken lgtbqia+ ally in a league where a majority of the fans (and probably most players and leadership, too) are more or less hostile towards anyone that isn’t white, cisgender, and straight. this is where my disappointment stems.
as disappointing as this all is, i do believe there is a difference between this situation, and that of vince dunn. while they both tweeted slurs when they were 14/15, i think what separates vince dunn in this situation is his blatant use of slurs NOW. it was in 2020 when he was caught, ON STREAM, saying the n-word. there is no excuse to say the n-word AT ALL, but it’s especially heinous when it came out of his mouth as a grown man during a time where it is almost universally agreed that you should never, under any circumstances, say the n-word if you are not black. as if this wasn’t enough to make anyone disturbed by his behaviour, he then doubled down and allowed (encouraged, even) his chat to harass the women who pointed out that he said the n-word. and when a user brought this up on tumblr back in may of 2020 (i wasn’t on hockeyblr back then, so this is all things i’ve read), they were attacked by anons trying to defend vince dunn. why? why defend him for that? this whole situation was then effectively swept under the rug for nearly a year.
ultimately, neither of these players will be cancelled (even though, personally, i believe that vince dunn should face consequences by the league for his use of a racial slur in 2020). they are professional athletes making millions a year and they ultimately won’t face any consequences from this. i wish that we could make enough noise to /force/ some public accountability from them, but i’m not hopeful.
this was a huge stream of consciousness, i know, so i’ll kind of sum up a bit. i’m not forgiving nolan patrick for this. i’m extremely disappointed about this, and until i see him take accountability, i’ll be distancing myself. with that being said, i don’t think we should take the words he said several years ago as indicative of who he is now. i think his present-day actions are more telling; thus far, i’ve not seen him voice support publicly for the lgtbqia+ community, and therein lies the majority of my disappointment. i won’t lie, this really fucking sucks. i can’t defend him, because using slurs at all is indefensible. i’m not going to go and delete anything i’ve said about nolpat, but i’ll definitely be re-evaluating how i view him going forward. if anything, this has really put into perspective why it’s so important to not put mediocre white men on a pedestal lol they’ll just disappoint baby thats facts! i’ve been disappointed by far too many white men, i should really have learned my lesson by now
#again: i am not! defending nolan here#at all#i just had some thoughts that i wanted to write down#also: please let me know if anything i said was misinformed and/or spoke over anyone!#i will immediately delete the post#but as i said im still reading other peoples opinions and struggling to come to my own conclusions here#this is.... A Lot to take in#but i will be removing 'nolan patrick defense squad!' from my bio. for obvious reasons lol#i want to try and make enough noise so that he has to address it somewhere#and hold himself accountable#vince dunn tw#nolan patrick tw#<-- ngl that one hurt a bit

I’m just gonna say it. Philly Twitter is a toxic dumpster fire and what I have learned in the last year is that Nolan Patrick lives rent free in the heads of every straight white man from Philadelphia. I’m not saying that dude doesn’t have flaws (see: disgusting opinions about sexual assault!) but like...accusing him of trying to tear down the Flyers via accusations of years of medical abuse because he sucks at hockey and they traded him? Bit of a stretch.
And OH MY GOD the Philly press are the worst of the lot. Honestly, I already couldn’t stand basically all of them - excepting Jamey and Charlie - but this shit is Extra. These men - and a few women running podcasts alongside those men! - need to get over the fact that a player hated them so much that he refused to give them any good sound bites for their blogs, and grow the fuck up. Like first of all, why are you wasting energy hating a kid? And secondly, he’s not even THERE anymore! MOVE. ON.
Then there’s the MISOGYNY. Oh, man says that he had a head injury and was illegally prescribed highly addictive opioids by his team while they his team brushed the whole thing under the rug and blamed him by saying it was a childhood migraine disorder and then is fucking trashed by said team and the entire press for a season before begging to be traded away and seemingly doing much better with another team? What a “pussy”. What a “whiny bitch”. What a “teenaged girl”. Jesus christ.
But don’t forget the ableism and complete disregard for people struggling with mental health. Not only was Patrick’s TBI “just headaches” and his struggle to recover and come back to the league an apparently personal failure of someone who is just “injury prone” and therefore somehow useless ... Oh, no! Let’s just fucking throw Robin Lehner under the bus and accuse him of lying by explaining away his behaviour as a manic episode or attention-seeking or a drug binge or an alcoholic rant. Let’s just ignore his own admitted history of opioid addiction - AS A RESULT OF LITERALLY THE VERY THING HE’S CALLING OUT - except for in the ways it benefits us: to call him a druggie that shouldn’t be allowed in the league! “Oh, poor Vegas. They’ll regret trading Flower now!” Disgusting disgusting disgusting.
I honestly don’t understand fanbases who double down on defending GIANT CORPORATIONS in the face of MOUNTAINS OF EVIDENCE over the very young adults they steal away and lock into ridiculous contracts that literally have them basically selling their bodies away to a profit-driven business that doesn’t give a single fuck about them as people.
Arizona.
Chicago.
Montreal.
Philadelphia.
[Insert next team here.]
Get these old money-grubbing men with their toxic masculinity out of the fucking league and protect the next generations of kids that end up on their rosters.
Wayne Simmonds was right. In the face of *gestures expansively* ALL. THIS. BULLSHIT. who would want their kid playing hockey?
ETA: I have struck out the part about NP being given drugs as it has been confirmed that journalist was basically lying for clicks and clout. However, the rest still stands. We DO have mountains of evidence of abuse and shady behaviour by these teams, even without Lehner saying anything. He could be lying through his teeth about everything and all the other examples would still continue to exist, as would the toxic mentality of the fan bases.

now that i discovered nolpats has his dms open every day is a struggle to not send him donna haraway's cyborg manifesto, or like, 10k+ words on ritual/body/pain/depersonalization/Hardcore Identification and Infinite Jest. i could save him from hockey. this boy needs 2/3 years to be a hermit and fish.
yes, it's very upsetting to develop a parasocial attachment/asd hyperfixation to a 23 yr old pro hockey player but i've now had a migraine for 3 days and i can't sleep SO, we're all trying our best is what i'm getting at here

additional info because people deserve to be informed and understand the gravity of the situation.
ambien in particular has nasty withdrawal effects, and can cause hallucinations as it is also a hypnotic. benzos and ambien together create a higher chance of addiction and dependency.
benzos and ambien bind to the same receptors and increase GABA (the inhibitory neurotransmitter) and thus when used together can cause over sedation, comas, and even death. they could have killed him.
moreover, the source said “training staff” this does not indicate specifically medical staff in which case this could also be a HUGE breech of scope as you can’t just give out controlled substances that aren’t prescribed like they are tylenol and advil.

ABOUT NOLAN PATRICK AND SLURS
As someone who's always talking about the issues trailing hockey culture, I feel like pointing some things out, considering this is about acknowledging issues and actively working on them.
After speaking up on the Vince Dunn issue it came to my knowledge that Nolan Patrick also used slurs on Twitter during the same time Vince did, and since we don't use two sets of standards here I couldn't simply ignore it.
As human beings, we grow up in a society that bases itself on forces like racism, homophobia, a set of other equally problematic issues, that means with fourteen to fifteen years old you may not know the implications of a slur in a whole oppressive system, but you do know the slur is wrong! You can't tell me that a fourteen years old was too young or too innocent because at fourteen years old I was months away from traveling all alone to a different country to study, at fourteen years old as a poc I do remember how it hurt to see people using slurs, I was well aware because I was at the receiving side of that violence, we cannot pretend as if age excused us of answering for what we did/said. Age does influence our understandings, yes, but it does not excuse you, you do know it is wrong, you may not be well aware of the bigger picture or educated enough, but you know it's not right.
What we have to consider while thinking about those players' backgrounds? Most of them are white, male, and rich, which means the chances they were exposed to social debates like racism, homophobia, etc are very low, but when they become a public figure, they are now dealing with the bigger picture, and not educating themselves on important topics is a choice. Not speaking up on issues that are constant in their leagues is also a choice, but choosing to do it when there is old stuff about you being brought up is even more problematic. How can we be sure you changed if you choose to sweep the dirt under the rug?!
The second thing I want you to consider is that at age fourteen/fifteen these guys were already playing hockey in a minor league that is also very violent when it comes to homophobia, racism, and social issues. They are part of hockey culture, a culture that has been building itself since a long time ago, and it still in the building process when we choose not to acknowledge this stuff. And I'm well aware that the way we openly debate things nowadays is different than how we used to do five years ago, but we still hurt people in this process and we need to recognize this and speak about it in order to change. If we keep choosing to ignore what happened and "move forward" we'll never really move.
The environment these guys grow up in is problematic and they shape the stuff they said/thought while young, but what are they openly doing nowadays out of that environment?? are they really out of it??
Vince Dunn not only tweeted slurs when he was sixteen, but he also used the N-word during a live stream and proceeded to pretend as if he didn't, and he chose not to speak up on racial issues until he was pressured to. Everything coming up about Vince is proof that he hasn't really changed -at least not how people thought he did, while in Nolan's case there's nothing and this non-existence is a problem as well because it brings uncertainty, therefore you can't neither defend nor accuse him, but you can recognize that what he did was still wrong. His friends using it around shows that it wasn't a one-time thing, that it was a common vocabulary and this common vocabulary harmed idk-how-many queer people inside and outside his bubble.
While you may think this is calling someone homophobic based on an old tweet, this isn't! This is about pointing an issue and seeing the way it reflects on hockey culture nowadays. This is about recognizing our roles in oppression systems and working to change them. I'm not walking along with canceling culture, but I think people need to be held accountable for what they do (this goes from Vince to favs like Nolan). As Robin would say the key to moving forward is what we do with our discomfort.
That being said, me >>>melinda<<< as a bisexual woc am not comfortable talking about Nolan like I used to, I won't be writing about him anymore. I'm still comprehending the whole thing, but this just turned me off.
We can choose to discuss this openly and agree that white supremacy/straight cis structures are violent and use this debate as a door to change not only hockey culture but also the culture of our little bubble, or we can choose to sweep the dirt under the rug -as we always do, and the NHL does- and keep watching these aggressions making the league and this community even less safe and more harm to bipoc/queer.
You can see about the Vince issue here and here
#Im still overwhelmed with all of this#but I did a lot of thinking and I'm not comfortable writing about him anymore#I don't think he's a bad person#but I'm kinda sad seeing stuff like this being brough up and the silence from the other side yk#not cool#again: this is not me canceling someone or telling yall to stop supporting#but I (MELINDA) am not supporting anymore#nolan patrick#vince dunn#hockey culture#mel rants#tw slurs#tw homophobia

on slurs and “cancel culture;”
with the surfacing of more athletes using slurs, i thought i would briefly share my feelings on the situation for my followers and those who care to read them. for context, i’m a bisexual, cis, white latina (puerto rican and mexican). while i’m apart of these marginalized communities, and i have had to face racism and biphobia/homophobia, i also have the privilege of presenting as white and straight to those who do not know my ethnicity nor my sexuality.
i understand that it can hurt a lot to see a prominent figure you really like exposed for their bigoted past, and because of your parasocial relationship to this figure, you may feel the urge to defend them in times when their character is being called into question. however, it is important to realize that when you rush to defend their use of slurs -- which have a harmful, violent, and deadly history -- you are prioritizing your own feelings and that person’s character over the safety and wellbeing of the marginalized group that is harmed by the use of those slurs.
the use of slurs has never, and will never, be okay. it was far more prevalent and normalized in the past, but it is important to realize it has never ever been okay to use slurs. they have always been violent and served to uphold white supremacy and perpetuate homophobia. the continued use of these slurs only serves as a stepping stone to further the hatred against the targeted minority group, and it can progress into people feeling justified in committing acts of violence against them. think of the anti-asian hate crimes that have been accumulating rapidly as a result of donald trump’s anti-asian rhetoric regarding covid. use of these slurs and micro aggressions are harmful and have contributed to the hatred of marginalized communities.
you may think “but i’ve said stuff like that, and i’ve changed” or “shouldn’t we want people to change and grow.” education, change, and character development are all important, however, time must pass for a lot of people to heal from the hurt of seeing someone use a hateful slur. to demand that someone affected by these slurs “get over” the figure’s use of slurs is cruel and apathetic at best. forgiveness is not a one and done kind of thing. when you make a mistake, you can apologize, but you do not deserve nor are you owed forgiveness. apologies are not transactional, and for some people, it takes time getting over that kind of pain; some people may never forgive them, and that’s okay.
furthermore, stop conflating “cancel culture” and being held accountable for wrongdoings. cancel culture does not exist. no one has the power to “cancel” a prominent figure because in order to accomplish that, that figure would have to collectively lose all of their following, which will never happen. people are allowed to point out another person’s flaws and wrongdoings without persecuting them or hating them. “cancel culture” has been flippantly thrown around in discussions of this sort because it works to flip the narrative. it attributes these prominent figures with some sort of victimhood they do not deserve. let me make it glaringly clear that when someone uses a slur, they are not the victim for being called out.
it does not matter if the use of the slur was a joke, if it was in a song, or if it was when they were twelve. you frequently hear people dismissing the use of slurs and other violently racist and bigoted actions because the person was of a young age. when you do this, you fail to recognize that allowing people to be homophobic and racist as a child is wrong, and there are victims in this situation. black children, queer children, and all children of color are stripped of their childhood because at a young age they are subjected to severe bigotry and hatred. never forget that JT Brown’s toddler was called the n-slur, nor the amount trans youth that have committed suicide, nor the queer children who have been killed by their parents. straight, white children often get all of the grace and pity without realizing that there are kids who never get to grow up or never get to have a childhood because of these slurs.
you have every right to choose who to support, and if you see a pattern of growth and development, by all means, lend your support to that figure. it’s important to embrace change and evolution, but do not ever criticize someone who has been harmed by the use of these slurs for not feeling the same way you do, and perhaps take into consideration the privilege you have in being able to so easily forgive these people for their bigotry and homophobia. you have never had to personally experience the harm of their bigotry before. in the case that they ever do apologize, it is not your apology to accept. it is an apology for the community they have harmed to accept.
#this is a long post#but i had to get it off my chest#i've been hurting#and it's okay if you are too#heal at your own pace#i'm with you and i care for you#my inbox and dms are open to all queer folks and bipoc who want to talk to me#if you're not apart of the communities impacted by the use of slurs i don't want/need your opinion#just listen to bipoc+ and lgbtqia+ folk#nolan patrick#vince dunn#jamie benn#auston matthews#patrick kane#tw: suicide#tw: slurs#tw: racism#text

Nolan blocked a girl that commented that what logan did was a sex crime not a mistake. I feel like that really sealed the deal for what he meant with his comment
yeah I think I reblogged screenshots of that twitter talking about it. I agree, I think that said a lot more about his stance on the situation.
