it is SO funny to me how much bionicle's genre mishmash shows up in the toa metru. like before they become toa theyre in totally different genres. nokama's in a dark academia critique of metru nui's social strata. vakama's an armorer in a fantasy novel. whenua's six inches from being a pokemon professor. and now all of a sudden theyre in a cyberpunk noiresque dystopia. what a world
Whenua a pokemon professor ahahaha. yes! of course they're meant to represent a variety of different parts of the city and we love the variety, but they do show very different snapshots of Metru Nui. part of the reason it's so hard for them to get along... also possibly why the depression hits, that genre mood shift is difficult

Actually, if you don’t mind me sending you random headcanons, Clark being cautious makes a weird kind of sense. Like this is a guy who does not have and has never had a normal pain scale. He can get shot, have a building fall on him, etc and just shrug it off. He’s probably had to intentionally learn and remember what hurts normal people. And sometimes he’s probably not sure. So he’s watching humans fall, get hit, or get sick, and he’s like okay, okay what does this mean for them. And he probably mostly skews towards them being extremely fragile. So Lois throwing herself into even mildly dangerous situations probably freaks the hell out of him. Bonus scene is him having a meltdown when he finds out Batman, who throws himself off buildings recreationally, is also a normal human (mostly).
Let's get one thing straight I would never mind you sending me random headcanons. You can do that anytime you like. I'd be honored to be the receiver of information, even if sometimes I don't know what to say or have anything to add to the headcanons shared with me.
No yeah this all makes total sense. And I am always here saying Lois as the love as his life and Bruce as the platonic love of his life are similar enough to prove Clark has a type. That guy finds an intelligent, noiresque, workaholic human who constantly throws themself into mortal danger on the daily out of a noble duty to truth and justice as well as pure, pure, pure stubbornness, hears this kind of human talk down to him, and goes, "Oh. Ohhhhh. I love them."

Happy STS!
How much does your writing vary across genres and/or tones? I know it to be on the dark and heavy side, but I was wondering, have you tried your hand at writing a light romance or a comedy? Or maybe you’d consider doing it in the future?
Listen... TDL is technically a horror comedy. 😅
Seriously though, this is interesting timing - I may or may not be working on* a shorter piece (either a long short or a short novella, we'll see how verbose it gets) at the moment that is significantly lighter in tone than my usual stuff. I'm not in the habit of publicly sharing details this early in a story's process, but I will say it's (directly) related to an existing project.
I'd say Supernova is the most out there of my longer projects in terms of things I usually write. It's still pretty dark, but in a somewhat different way than my usual, and it's primarily a science fiction/speculative piece, whereas I'm usually firmly in the contemporary sphere. It's a fair bit lighter tonally as well, especially in the first act. I describe the first act tonally (in terms of the main plot) as primarily "ethereal and full of wonder."
Other than that, genres I'm interested in trying out are still primarily in the "dark" realm of crime fiction: I've always wanted to write a murder mystery, for instance, and I'd also be into trying my hand at a more "classic" noiresque piece at some point. I want to write a procedural/legal thriller because I fucking love reading them. The Secret History may have inspired me to try out something dark academia-inspired at some point, too, we'll see.
Purely "fluffy" stories or light romance are just not really my jam, though, personally. I can read and enjoy a (mostly) wholesome love story as long as there's some kind of intriguing overarching story conflict going on, but there has to be something deeply fucked up about a fictional relationship for me to feel compelled to write about it, at least as a central/major plot.
*"Working on" = mostly just beat sheet and outlining for now, because I'm currently focused on query prep for libaw until September.

So I accidentally made it my project while I was visiting my parents to read the Star Wars Phasma origin book only when I was fucking blazed out of my gourd and last night I had a fucking breakthrough. I wasn’t sure about it but now I’m pretty sure this book is a masterpiece of speculative fiction. (Not quite sure how it is as a Star Wars book but I think most sequels era stories don’t feel exactly like Star Wars anyway.) No, I am not going to go back and re-read this book sober to see if I’m actually right. I had such a good time reading it while high as a fucking kite on sativa edibles I’m pretty sure I scripted an entire twilight-zone, noiresque prestige TV adaptation while in the bath last night. Cannot in good conscience recommend this book generally but it’s an incredible high read.

Book Review: The Monkey's Mask by Dorothy Porter
Tumblr media
Damn, it's hot in here.
Dorothy Porter's 1995 novel has one of the most unique book concepts I've seen in recent years: it's a noiresque murder mystery focused on a lesbian private detective... written in verse, and centered around a surprisingly sleazy art and poetry circle who get tangled up in a young girl's murder.
I didn't know how well a crime story could work in verse format, but let me tell you: Porter's skill with words blew me away from the first page. The language of the book is pared down, almost minimalistic, but the terse lyricism, the rhythm of the lines and the sharp metaphors serve the dark mood of the story incredibly well. The protagonist, Jill, is a tough and insightful woman with a good eye for detail, gritty street smarts and so much sizzling butch charm that I found myself swooning a bit more than once. Her femme fatale, Diane, is every bit as smart and enticing, and man, their relationship dynamic could set a room on fire. The book is described as "an erotic murder mystery" and that's exactly what you get: it's steamy, provocative and cynical, which is incredibly refreshing to see if you're tired of the cute lovey-dovey lesbian rep a lot of mainstream media offers. (Nothing wrong with wholesome queer stories, of course, but some of us crave darker stuff.) And the way poetry, sexuality and self-expression are woven into the plot are absolutely seamless. One could argue that the pared-down verse format makes the mystery and the clues more difficult to follow, and, well... I wouldn't say that's a wrong take, but in the end I think you can get a pretty satisfying picture. If you don't mind a few gut-punches along the way, because man, does this book not hold back (mind the content warnings, by the way). That ending... ow. But also wow.
Reading this book was a little like falling in love with the wrong person. And I say that as the biggest compliment.

Write for 365: Day 304
1940′s Detective AU Random Snippet 3
*Remember this and this? I still haven’t planned it out. Here’s another snippet I wrote though.
The punch filled his mouth with the tangy taste of copper and his jaw rattled from the impact of the fist. His hand snapped out to catch himself on the wall behind him before he hit the ground and caused some other damage to his already injured person. After spitting the blood in his mouth out, he turned his head to look at the furious man standing much closer than he remembered him being. The fist that sent him staggering was balled up at his side and ready to punch Jason again if he so much as breathed the wrong way.
“What was that for, dollface?”
Icy eyes narrowed menacingly at him as Tim stepped into Jason’s personal space with a scowl twisting his pretty lips. “You know exactly what that was for. I trusted you with that information and that’s how you repay me. Spilling my secrets to some common criminal like they mean nothing at all.”
“I told you things might get rough and uncomfortable and you told me to do whatever is necessary to get the information you need. I did just that. Either you trust me or you don’t. It’s that simple.”
“Simple? You think any of this is simple. My father could be dead or tortured or wasting away in some cell. None of this is simple. Most of my friends and family don’t believe me and I’m supposed to running a company, not running around with some private dick figuring out what happened to the only man that’s ever been a father to me. I’m supposed to be signing contracts and dealing with complaints and meeting with investors. There are plenty of people that would be furious with me if they found out I was doing this.”
“That’s not my problem, sweetie.”
“Not your problem.” Two hands shoved him hard into the wall, then did it again when he bounced off the brick. “Not your problem! How much do I have to pay you for it to be your problem or have you forgotten who’s the boss here? I’ve given you everything you have asked for and compensated you much better than most would. All I’ve done is cooperate with you and you treat me like utter shit and throw me under the bus. Do you think you can take advantage of me because I’m some spoiled rich kid that grew up in a posh mansion with my thumbs up my ass? I’m not the naïve pretty boy you like to make me out to be.”
“Tim, that’s not-”
“It is! It’s exactly what you think. I can’t take care of myself in this seedy underworld you spend most of your time in, but I can. You’re not the only one that grew up on the streets. I was young and alone and desperate for something more than a cold, empty mansion. Just because my biological parents were rich, didn’t mean they were good parents. They abandoned me all the time. They ignored me and I wanted something more. I wanted people that weren’t paid to keep me company.”
“You spent time on the streets by yourself?”
“Does that surprise you? The little, rich boy walked the streets of Gotham by himself because he was lonely and desperate for human contact. I know these streets the same as you do, so don’t act like I’m some outsider imposing on your world.”
“I’m sorry.”
“What?”
Heaving a great sigh, Jason brought his hands up to wrap around Tim’s thin wrists and gave them a gentle squeeze. “I said, I’m sorry. I’ll stop treating you like a… outsider.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“Didn’t expect me to own up to being an ass?”
“Not really. You haven’t yet.”
“Well, don’t expect me to do it again.”
“I absolutely won’t.”

A noir-esque private eye story, anyone🕵🏼‍♀️? Only in this case it’s not a detective story but more a story by Richard Brautigan, who decided to try his hand at noir. It’s beautifully absurd: the detective gets carried away thinking of Babylon and the femme fatale drinks gallons of beer and doesn’t go to the toilet, which looks more mysterious than the case itself. #bookstagram #booklover #literature #whattoread #whattoreadnext #richardbrautigan #americanliterature #americanauthors #postmodernism #parody #postmodernnovel #postmodernliterature #dreamingofbabylon #privateeyestory #privateeyenovels #detectivestory #noir #noiresque #noirbook (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGznZYUgvvz/?igshid=a29gpn9k7ntm

Power of the Press (1943)
"It was Oscar Trent who put the finger on Jerry Purvis. I liked Jerry."
"Get yourself a drink and forget it."
"The same Mr. Oscar Trent gave us that tip on Davidson, I know that now. He framed that riot and murdered Lambert Davidson just as sure as if he'd shot him in the back. Mr. Trent works for Mr. Rankin. I don't like Trent. I don't like Rankin."
"You're talkin' too much!"
"But I thought I was working for a newspaperman. Which Rankin ain't, and Trent ain't either. But just now I saw Rankin give you your orders - so you're just the same as Trent."
"Now listen -"
"Naw. Because I just quit liking you."
