Noel only ever heard the vocals in his monitors' mix onstage. For twenty years, just the singer. Only the singer. Not his guitar. Just the vocalist.

Noel: I—I really—I really miss, now, just bein' a guitarist. And kinda just— [offscreen] Wow. I reckon that's— Noel: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, I used to love it. 'Cause when I—I would—um… I never had my guitar in the monitors. Ever. [offscreen] Really? Noel: Not for—over twenty years. [offscreen]: Even in—on those giant?! Noel: Never had it. I—you—when—a couple of times, when I left tours, and blah blah blah—you know, uh.

Gem would stand in for me. And, uh, he—he called me up once, and he said, 'I've just put your monitor set-up on!' I was like, '…right'. And he went, 'There's nothing in it!'

And I was like, 'No, I know.' And he said, 'Well, there's only vocals in it!'

And I was like, 'Well, yeah.' And he said, 'Well, how do you hear yourself?!' I was like, 'I'm in the gig! I'm on stage—[mimes strumming guitar]—I'm in the gig! I'm not—there's not a separate gig coming out of here [points at speakers].'

I would always stand facing the drummer. I don't need to hear the drums; I don't need to hear the keyboard player; I don't need to hear—I can hear them from the PA, you know, and I would just get—and I would not—I've—I've never heard my guitar—even to this day. I never have my guitar in the mix, ever.

Liam doesn't like me. He confuses love with hate. 'I love you.' No, Liam, I think you'll find you fucking hate me. The reason he doesn't like me is that I'm indifferent to him. I can come off tour, put the bags down and shut the door. Liam can't do that. He wants to carry on. Plus, he insults me and I don't like being around people who insult me. But, y'know, he is my brother. And although I don't like him, I do love him to bits.

We're in a period of unrest at the minute because he's a fucking idiot who insults my intelligence. I have to suppress all my working class urges not to smash a chair over his head. The polite thing to say is that we do a dance around each other. He doesn't get in my way and I don't get in his. I know for a fact Liam doesn't like me. It's because I'm much more talented than him. I love him because he's my brother but I don't LIKE him. He says he loves me but I don't see much coming from him.

He’s a f…ing little idiot is what he is. I haven’t seen him for four months but I know wherever he is he is being a f…ing idiot. Genuinely, he doesn’t like me, I tell you that for a fact. And I am indifferent to his idiocy.

The problem with our relationship is that he doesn't like me. I know that. I can accept that. I actually don't mind that. And I'm indifferent to him. I'm not bothered what he does, I'm not bothered what he says, I'm not bothered about his music, his haircut or where he lives. I don't actively go out of my way to antagonise him. He does actively go out of his way to antagonise me. But I just keep out of his way. I can't be dealing with him, he's just a pain in the a**. He's got a split personality. He's either got a Messiah complex. When he looks in the mirror he sees the Messiah. Or he's got a Caesar complex. When he looks in the mirror he sees enemies everywhere. It's very difficult to deal with a person who thinks he's the centre of the universe one minute and the next minute everybody's out to get him.

My theory is that noel LOVES to have somebody around who can make him laugh all the time. He himself has a sense of humour and he makes ppl around him laugh and I bet he’s quite proud of it. But he needs someone else to make HIM laugh.

That’s one of the main things he likes about liam (which has been confirmed in several interviews). And it’s probably part of the reason why he befriended ppl like matt when liam’s not around. He once said on a podcast that the reason he likes matt is because he makes him laugh like no one else does.

No offence to matt he’s lovely but my personal interpretation of that line would be “He [matt] makes him [noel] laugh like liam did”.
