WHY DID IT NOT SURPRISE HIM THAT SOMEONE HAD HIRED A HITMAN TO TAKE HIM OUT? He’s CLINGING to the side of the building, one furry hand on the railing and the other CLUTCHING his signature red hat. the entourage of smooches quickly toss the grinch into one helluva giggle fit —— - it was a surprise and delightful sudden breakage to the silence that hung heavy in the room.  he liked solitude ,  we all know that ,  but what’s better than sitting in silence with a loved one ?  profusely touching and expressing your love to them !  but getting back on track here ,  the grinch agreed to that statement wholeheartedly ,  but he struggled to follow it.  that’s why nobody’s gracious offerings were welcomed with open arms and big smiles.  the grinch laughed with half protests ,  half hugging the little creature closer as his face warmed up with each kiss sprinkled all over.

“  n - nobody !  cut it out — !  ”    he giggled ,  his fuzzy hand finding its way to the fluffy cheek of their face ,  gently holding them back from peppering anymore smooches.  his pearly white grin beamed at them ,  his heart fluttering with joy he never knew he missed so dearly throughout his lifetime of loneliness and isolation.  the grinch let his head hang forward for just a moment ,  letting out the rest of his laughter before he looked back up at nobody ,  pulling their head close to his own and giving them a big ol kiss on the lips — - it was hardly a kiss ,  actually.  his grin was too strong and wide to properly pucker up ,  but their lips were smushed together ,  and that was okay for now.

Margaret's reputation

In North and South, the ones that discuss the "boldness", "forwardness" or "impropriety" of Margaret protecting Mr Thornton with her body are Fanny and a maid, Jane; it is Fanny's saying that she knows Margaret is in love with John and that she's positive that he will not marry her what makes Margaret indignant.

In fact neither Margaret nor John care for the "reputation" aspect of the situation; Mrs Thornton mentions it "I consider you bound in honour" and he immediately replies “Bound in honour,” said he scornfully. “I’m afraid honour has nothing to do with it." and the conversation turns towards Margaret's possible feelings for John: him arguing she has none, his mother that she does and that they are evident. John and Margaret's conversation during the proposal spins around the same idea: it was not personal, it was not an act of love but an attempt at protecting the vulnerable.

So it is particularly jarring to me that at least half the adaptations do make a case of including Margaret's reputation in the proposal: both 2004 and 2022. And not only because it's a bit cheap, but because, really, in universe, nobody cares. In Helstone, Margaret is the daughter of the pastor, in London, she is the niece of wealthy Mrs Shaw; in those places she is SomeoneTM and therefore gossip can harm her and those around her. But in Milton she's the daughter of a private tutor. She has become barely middle class. She's NobodyTM in a big city; she's not known or talked about or considered around the circles of the wealthy, so much so that everybody thinks it was Fanny the one to jump in front of Thornton. When Mrs Thornton speaks of being bound in honor she rather has in mind a sense that he cannot ignore what pretty much amounts to a declaration on Margaret's side, which would be dishonourable on his part to ignore.

Even later on, when the train station drama happens, which would actually be a compromising thing, we get a sense that it is judged as improper, but Margaret is not socially considered A Ruined WomanTM at all because of it.
