Mickey’s pulled over on his bike north of Wisconsin. He’s shivering. He hates fucking Wisconsin.

“Nasty night for a ride, wouldn’t you say?” the patrolman asks him, perfectly friendly.

“Officer… Gallagher, is it?”

Mickey eyes him up and down. No response he can give will keep him outta cuffs tonight and so he’s all adrenaline now, giddy with the knowledge that he’s gotten this far despite fate and all its efforts to the contrary.

“Maybe in another life. Maybe in another time…” he muses, then takes off, leaving Gallagher behind to watch his glowing taillights fade into distant pinpricks.
