I know the writers of the show wrote blue eye samurai with Mizu as a woman disguised as a man in a way similar ish to Mulan but uh

They accidentally made it deeper than that ??

If you removed like 2 lines of dialogue in episode 5 you could even make an argument for trans masc Mizu. Or at the least gender queer.

Being transgender is not a concept in this time period. But trust. People have always wanted to be other genders, probably for the entirety of human history. And how someone would go about being trans in a world with no true understanding of the concept, might be similar to what Mizu IS DOING RIGHT NOW.

Living as a man. PERMANENTLY. Not temporarily to achieve some near goal like Mulan and the many other stories with this concept. Mizu has lived as a man nearly their entire life and no intention to ever live as a woman in the future.

Mizu admires their freshly binded chest in the mirror as a teen.

When alone Mizu refers to himself as a man.

When alone with Ringo, (someone who knows the secret) Ringo also refers to Mizu as a man.

Mizu threatens to straight kill Ringo at the the very use of the word “girl”.

When, and ONLY when seeing 2 MEN kiss does he think of Taigen.

Not to mention madame Kajis indelicate insinuation of gay sex to Mizu, something I believe wasn’t for no reason. OR Madams iconic line “you are more man than ANY come through my door” (I’m convinced she has an idea of Mizus true sex but doesn’t care to accuse or call them out for it)

They HAD lived as a woman in the past. Only for about a year, and they did it to get married for her mothers sake. To save her from a life of prostitution. She was able to be happy, because it IS POSSIBLE to be happy while not presenting how you like. It’s a strain and some can never be happy doing so but it’s possible and people do it all the time to make their lives easier or to keep the peace with family or for many other reasons.

Episode 5 gave HUGE VIBES of going back into the closet when living with your parents or just visiting. And Mizu looked SO uncomfortable and awkward in woman’s clothing and doing “wife things” (partly cause they have never done that before) and maybe it was my own projecting but I felt so uncomfortable FOR Mizu.

These things don’t necessarily mean being a transgender man specifically. Gender is actually really complicated and has ALOT to do with what society deems it.

Mizu is a masculine person. Being what Japan wants women to be isn’t in line with what Mizu is. A violent, practical, stoic, cold, masculine, confident and capable warrior.

dressing up as a woman with the makeup ONLY to try and make her husband happy. She didn’t WANT to. “To soften her husbands heart, the bride… danced” performed femininity FOR HIM. Only for Mikio to betray her for, in his eyes, being more masculine than him, by beating him in a physical fight.

Mizu is both the ronin and the bride. Mizu will be whatever they need to in order to achieve their owed deaths. They HAVE to be a man to get their revenge but that doesn’t mean Mizu WANTS to be a woman. (To be fair who WOULD in that time but I digress) and it doesn’t mean they WANT to be a man. They WANT their revenge. Everything is secondary to that.

Mizu is so different from other characters…

I grew up in a kinda misogynistic place and my mom really didn’t let me “do boy stuff” or dress masculine in any sense until my late teens. I my self don’t know if I can even call myself Trans. But I’m masculine, I like looking like a man and dressing as one but I don’t WANT to be a man necessarily. But I don’t WANT to be a woman. I feel like we as a society put to much distinction between the two and the people who don’t fit either side get left out at times.

Mizu is such a relatable character to me, like no other characters complicated feelings about their own sex and gender have ever come close.

They are for those who don’t have a strong sense of their own gender. Especially those who are biologically female and hesitant to lean into their sex because of the societal baggage.

Once people realize that how you dress, how you act, and what you do in reality have nothing to do with your bio sex and everything with what society has forced people to do based on factors out of our control is the day we can finally stop having these conversations.

Do what you want, gender is fake.

When my wife and I first started fucking dating, we had a shorthand phrase we would exchange when someone was being...some kind of way about gender and sex and sexuality...to sort of indicate to each other what we thought was happening.

"I see we've decided to round to the nearest dick."

See, wifey and I are both trans and bisexual in REALLY similar ways, but with different AGABs right? And we noticed with time that interesting trends showed up. For me, people, even those who know I'm bisexual, treat me like they would treat me as a straight person in their life. Wifey often gets treated like loved ones treat exclusively gay people. Then with gender it's similar! People assume I *don't* have a dick and so they treat me like they would treat [failed] women in their lives. They assume Wifey DOES have a dick and treat her like they would treat a [failed] man in their life. Even beyond that, when wifey and I are TOGETHER, we are automatically defaulted into the "straight" category or the "gay" category depending on which of us (how many of us) they are assuming has a dick, and then defers authority in the relationship to whoever they think has the dick.

It's all gender essentialism all the way down, and interrelated essentialism across the whole spectrum, butit shows up in different ways depending on how people perceive our relationship to our genetalia

And it IS about our genetalia because it almost always gets explicit about it at some point.

I think what I've always found the most interesting is how other queer and trans folks interact with the concept of rounding to the nearest dick, including how we as a community wield it against each other laterally. The experience of being called "basically a woman" by lesbian partners in order to reconcile their discomfort with my gender (as distinct from lesbian partners whose reconciliation of my gender with their sexuality involved calling THEMSELVES "basically alesbian" or some similar iteration that emphasized the importance/meaning of THEIR identity WITHOUT commenting on my own) while Wifey gets treated like "basically a man" because of how race, gender, and sexuality intersect for her. The experience of being told I am excempt from certain realities not based on ACTUAL lack of the experience but based on a feeling of ownership people believe they have over how those experiences may manifest in the world, like when someone says "well trans men aren't oppressed anymore" so I shouldn't take up space in women's communities, men's communities, OR trans-general communities. Or like when someone told wifey that gay men haven't been oppressed since same sex marriage.

Like A) you're simply fucking wrong, and B) even if you were RIGHT, I'm NOT a trans man and my wife ISN'T a gay man. So why would that mean anything about us?

Part of what we both noticed is that the function of "rounding to the nearest dick" is usually about silencing or side-lining someone. WHO exactly is relational and context dependent, but essentially it boils down to "I need one of us to be explicitly less empowered than the other of us to feel safe navigating our interaction"

Sometimes it's preferrable to BE the disempowered (e.g. justification of horizontal hostility) and others to be the disempowerING (e.g. gatekeeping access to socio-economic resources) but in either case, we explicitly see gender wielded asymmetrically and selectively to create and redirect power. Not as something intrinsic to a person or within their control. And I think it's interesting as a trans person to experience gender explicitly as power even when, for me, that's never what it's been. It's interesting to see how people engage with that power when THEY don't usually experience it that way.

Anyway, rounding to the nearest dick is something I think we should all avoid, in part because maybe we should stop focusing in so much on people's gender and sexuality having ANYTHING intrinsic/inherent to them, as opposed to a layer of context within the wholeness of their lives

Hi! It’s midnights anon (thank you sososo much for the name) and I need help with finding my gender identity? There’s a lot going on with me and stuff which I’m trying to focus on healing during my winter break but right now I’m not confused on my gender and sexuality

I used to think I was a lesbian, but I have since then tried to remove myself from diet culture and have gotten better from my slight ED and now I know I don’t fully feel (even even feel at all) like a woman. I don’t feel like a woman who gets to be small and wear dresses and wear makeup because I’m black and tell and never got to fit into femininity in that sense, I never got to be skinny or enough when it came to being considered a woman.

But whenever someone calls me a boy? It sucks sometimes, but it also feels REALLY good at other times, and my knee jerk reaction when someone calls me a girl is to immediately feel/think “I am not a girl I am not a girl”.

I like being called a boy, gay, etc. and I don’t identify as lesbian or sapphic, but I like the label Bisexual because I HAVE been attracted to women in the past? Except I’ve never felt sexually attracted to anyone, only aesthetically and platonically and (occasionally) romantically.

I’m also afraid of being attracted to women because I feel like a predator because of my experience growing up as a girl. I know the feelings of inadequacy and insecurity that is so prevalent in girls my age because I still feel that way and it feels wrong to want to pursue something with a girl.

I like boys but if I date one people think I’m straight because I don’t pass as a boy so I look like a really weird girl.

I want long curcly hair and a body that I shape because of my own preferences and not who people say my dream body should be

For starters:

Takeo Masaki is asexual. He has interest in romance, but other affairs just don’t really interest him.

Dr. Schuster is gay. Peter McCain was too (that’s what the whole “Phoebe” incident was about)

It’s more canon that Samantha Maxis is lesbian (*cough* SamGrey *cough*)

Misty is definitely bi and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Primis Dempsey is more likely to be openly bi (thanks to a certain Samurai), and he was by Blood of the Dead. Ultimis Dempsey is too full of anger and internalized feelings to ever explore it, which is what he told Peter after those loving letters ended up not being “Phoebe”. He would hopefully come around if things hadn’t hit the fan. I still hate Tag Der Toten.

I remember someone having the headcanon that Marlton is trans and I think I do too! As if the poor guy doesn’t have enough anxiety, he worries sometimes if he won’t be accepted if he was ever open about it. Misty reassures that nothing could ever change what an amazing man he is. Perhaps she’s a little rough about defending him, but she’s always being the best supportive gf she can be.

Richtofen goes by no label if you asked him, but he is in my eyes pansexual (between the obvious mlm quotes and the few quotes said about women + Director having a wife). Primis never had the time to truly pursue any of the crushes he had. Ultimis did! He actually dated his college roommate. Due to wanting different career paths, they broke up. Ultimis’ quote about how “all American women do is play games” is in reference to a not-so nice woman he pursued short term in the Illuminati. There was a lot of passion. Alas, his poor little heart loved her more than she deserved.

To add to this, Ultimis Richtofen and Dr. Schuster actually had feelings for each other! But the two were shyly pining their feelings thanks to how awful the 1940s was. It’s without a doubt those late evenings performing “overtime” lab work there was just an excuse to grow closer. Before the 115-induced delusions warped Richtofen’s mind, it was actually endearing to see the softness between each other blossom. Maybe in another timeline, things went better than what we had to see.

Samuel Stuhlinger is gay, but he’s heavily closeted about it. It’s no help when a voice in your head knows about your secret daydreams and teases you about it.

Sometimes I still think about the one secretary guy I had to call because of paperwork business and he was confused why I gave him a different name instead of my legal document name.

Had to tell him that I was trans and didn't change my name yet, he thought that I was a trans woman and started to have a conversation about trans people and trans issues.

At first I was really hesitant but turns out he was a really chill guy, had no problem using she/her and didn't even slip up once. Talked about how he was in queer/gay bars before with his wife and talked to trans women there. He really enjoyed his time in the bars and so did his wife, he was absolutely ecstatic to see and meet new people of all different types of orientation and backgrounds to learn/ listen to them and their stories.

While the constant misgendering was making me dysphoric I didn't have the heart to tell him that I'm not a trans woman, it also made me really happy to know how good of a heart this man has and how enthusiastic he was for trans rights and our protection and basic rights.

I remember vividly that he told me once that he punched a Nazi before (where I live Nazis are more common than some people want to believe, it's kind of an open secret).

The stuff he was talking about wasn't even just surface level stuff (granted it was like 80% of more "easier" lecture of trans liberation), he knew some more in depth things. Like this random office jockey had actually read about it and actually listened to trans voices and actively educated himself.

I hope he is doing well, same with his wife. Never met and heard of him again, I don't even remember what thing I had to call because of the paper stuff.

I also genuinely IRL never met another cis allo hetero man be this passionate and loving for trans people (and queer people in general). He still had heart in his activism which I believe is something a lot of people lose or forget. The first thing for him seemed to listen to the oppressed people and give them love,kindness and acceptance.

I believe with all the things going on we forget a lot of times that yes punching Nazis is good and all but we also need safe spaces and love something or someone to make us feel human again. At least for me it is that way, I don't know how others feel about it, I think that we can't liberate people properly if we don't fight with our hearts.

In modern times most karelians use these loanwords based on anglosphere views on gender and sexuality.

Traditionally speaking the views on gender and sexuality have been somewhat different, and words used have been more poetic and descriptive in many ways. Gender is seen as one role among others and as such, "mother" and "man" for example are not roles that contradict each other in any way, even if it is less common than being "woman" and "mother".

"eule yksis ruutois" - lit. "isn't in one (set of) traditional clothes" - person who travels between and beyond two genders, a "nonbinary*" person.

Day 35: Angry Man Pounded By The Fear Of His Latent Gayness Over A Dinosaur Transitioning Into A Unicorn

I love how much contempt for its characters this tingler starts off with. We have the iconic man/woman couple who are always the subject of conservative boomer humor about relationships, the emotionally unavailable man and his overbearing shrill wife, who don't even like each other, let alone love or show any attraction to each other. It feels like a caricature but it actually makes more sense when the man turns out to not actually be attracted to women, honestly.

This tingler aged... interestingly. The protagonist's crisis of sexuality is brought on by his attraction to Bort Jenkins, a unicorn athlete and reality TV star who was born as a dinosaur and recently transitioned to a unicorn. Clearly a stand-in for Caitlyn Jenner. (If my rudimentary research is correct, Bort's resemblance to her deadname is because this was written in that specific time period where she had come out as trans, but not publicly revealed her name yet.) She's a controversial figure for many reasons that I'm not going to get into now, but this comes from a time when people were pretty much just laser-focused on the trans thing. Bort isn't really a character who does anything in this story anyway, more of a news item for characters to discuss.

Another present day context that really changes how I read this story is the conservative furry panic of the past few years. Yes, the "if people can identify as other genders, what if they start identifying as ANIMALS?" dumbfuck made-up problem is much older, but it's really having a moment now. This story was an absurd concept when it was written but now we have real elected officials in the USA freaking out over the idea of people "identifying as" different species, bringing this story a whole lot closer to realism than anyone would've expected in 2015. To me, the message of this one feels closer to the conservative furry strawman than it does to real trans issues, especially with the whole "you're gay regardless of whether you're into human, unicorn or dinosaur men" thing; we're dealing with an issue of species transition where gender is static. (Truth be told, I don't think it was the best move to make a comparison to a real-life trans woman and make this point in association because I've seen how people misinterpret such things... but I'm sure Tingler readers in particular understand the abstraction and that this isn't applicable directly to the real person) I feel like a version of this story could be written today with the message of "what if the conservative strawman version of the furry fandom was real and not just a way of targeting queer people without saying you're targeting queer people? Would it really be that bad or even different of a world to live in?"

I'm interested to see how Dr. Tingle tackles trans issues in the future. Despite a couple things that read as dated to me I see a good foundation here from someone who is still working through his own feelings about gender identity. I know that future tinglers will have explicitly trans characters and the perspective of a trans author who has explored and introspected on his own gender identity more thoroughly.

He's got mommy issues like crazy, and has had a long string of toxic exs. Was married to Nox for a while. He also worked as a hitman for hire with Rupert when they were dating. And then worked for Berkley for a while kidnapping victims for her. Later is a stay at home Dad while Mibium (his eventually husband) works full time.

Beth: She/her, cis/lesbian, ice/shadow demon hybrid. She is Dayzel's estranged younger sister. She's very prim and proper, until you get to know her and she loosens up. Then she becomes much more mischievous and playful. She's a bit reckless and incredibly stubborn, but ultimately is a good person, despite her past mistakes.

Cole: he/him, too young to know labels, electric demon. Beth's son who is adopted by/raised by Dayzel and Mibium.

He's not as smart as some of my other OCS and much prefers brawn over brain. But definitely not a himbo. Runs a criminal gang of assassins and hitmen for hire. Mostly other demons.

Octavian: he/him, cis/bi (masc preference), poison/shadow demon hybrid. A demon aristocrat. A bit of slimeball but everyone loves him or at least pretends to because they're afraid of him. A collector of "fine" things.

Marley: they/poi, nonbinary/panromantic/asexual, poison demon. A chemist specializing in poisons/their own venom. They are very passionate and care deeply, but are a bit of a social outcast. Deeply, deeply craves connection.

Rain: he/him, trans/bi, touch/shadow demon hybrid. Very work focused and detail oriented due to his relationship with Berkley. Very low self esteem. Very little memory aside from living with Berkley. Incredibly lonely... This man needs a hug and a raise.

Reigns: he/him, trans/gay, true shadow demon. He is a "scientist" who works in Richard's lab. He's mostly muscle and sometimes an experiment himself though. He's very kind hearted, but is put in a place where he can't always abide by this. Ian's actual father figure and mentor for many years.

Jane: she/her, cis/bi, touch/shadow demon hybrid. She is a very gentle soul who has seen way too much. She's very laid back and relaxed most of the time, but does get anxious quite easily, especially when it comes to her family. She has no memory of her early childhood and was bounced from home to home the majority of her life. Married to Phoenix, and mother of Dee.

Phoenix: she/her, cis/bi, succubus. She is very... Passionate in a lot of ways. She tends to have a lot more of a temper than her wife, which can get her into trouble sometimes. She works as a secretary. She also streams games in her spare time.

Dee: they/them nonbinary/pan, touch/succubus/shadow demon hybrid. They are still a teenager, but they have a good head about them. Having picked up Phoenix's assertive nature, and Jane's levelheadedness.They can be very reckless at times and don't like listening to authority. They can be very stubborn, but what teenager isn't. Dare: they/she/he, genderfluid/bi (feminine preference), true shadow demon. They are Jane and Ian's parent. They are a very gentle and empathetic soul that was thrust in a very bad relationship. The king of hell, alongside Richard. Just wants to be a dad in peace... Living out the cottagecore dream with their partner Mindy.

Richard: he/him, cis/gay, mind demon. The king of hell! He's very charismatic in the sense that he is powerful... But has the personality of a wet paper bag. He is very self centered and selfish to a certain level of cruelty. He's Ian's real dad... But definitely not a good one.

Ian: he/him, cis/bi (feminine preference), mind/shadow demon hybrid. He's got so many daddy issues it's not even funny. He's very quick to temper and struggles to express genuine emotions. He gets overwhelmed easily. He can be gentle with those he cares about though, such as Talon and Ryan. He is pretty suave and very good at manipulating people. He's the secret prince of Hell.

Talon: he/him demiboy/unlabeled, mind/shadow demon. A young clone of Ian that is being raised as Ian's son. He's very curious about the world around him and loves asking questions. Very friendly most of the time, but can be shy if he's already overwhelmed.

Ryan: he/him, trans/gay, true shadow demon. He is sweetie with a, albeit mischievous, heart of gold. He loves to cook for his friends and family. He's very introverted and enjoys the simpler things in life. Takes on being an adopted father to Talon with Ian.

I would appreciate if you were a bit more specific with what of what I've said makes you think that, because I believe the gist of my argument is very important if not to feminism broadly, to a model of feminism that is capable of incorporating trans women without stabbing them in the back within its critique of patriarchy —namely that there isn't one intrinsic, "natural" female/woman identity or trait that invites misogyny, it's a self-reifying set of relations which creates the necessity for the concept of "womanhood" to exist, performing a woman's roles and being perceived as a woman is what makes women, women, and that includes trans women, there's little more to it than that

if you wanna set yourself apart from everyone and say you're actually a real woman, because you say you are, and dissect the difference from the transfem that doesn't necessarily think of their relation to gender through the same exclusive binary lens, however that manifests in practice, whichever labels and pronouns they choose to use, then do so, but I think you'll find that gets us no closer to examining why we are actually oppressed and the ideas we have to disseminate to counter that, because that line, while important for self-actualization, isn't actually very relevant to how we're perceived, which is often the most important aspect of how we're treated by society. while we can affirm our personal identity in relationships that are both recurring and premised on mutual respect, we don't get that privilege most of the time, and people's understanding of us are based on assumptions.

Something that really dawned on me earlier in regards to transgender and intersex people; specifically the way that cis people (typically those who are literally transphobic and such) view them.

Whenever it's brought up, they tell me that...

"trans people (and often intersex people, though they don't know the difference) are inherently sexual, how can you say they aren't have you ever seen them they're always posting sexual content, like nudes or talking about how horny they are!"

It made me realize that we literally do see these people differently. I see them as people, as regular everyday human beings. Being trans isn't a personality, it doesn't make you a different species or something. We're still very human and we still go about our days as normal everyday people. However if you only see trans people when you go looking for them on fetish sites or via 18+ discord servers; you're going to see them in a very different light. Because the only context you see them in is inherently sexual. So of course you only see them being sexual.

Now this isn't to say that trans people are never going to cross a boundary. I've had it happen SEVERAL times because a lot of the cultures I'm a part of are more accepting of that sort of thing. However I cannot stress enough that simply telling them "hey I'm uncomfortable with the way you spoke to me" was literally all it took for them to go "oh hey sorry about that; won't happen again!" The core difference is that a lot of the transphobes I'm talking about are literally SCARED of you, they're scared of the "lady with the beard" they're scared of the "sex perv" they see you as. So when you approach them in a way that's acceptable to your general culture, they get these alarms going off that you're trying to "do something" and like, no I don't excuse their bigotry and transphobe shit. Don't get me wrong, this post isn't trying to say "oh no the poor transphobes are just so scared guys we have to forgive them amd change how we act around them uwu" god no, if that's the message you're getting please understand that's not the intention.

The intention here is to say that you have to understand that they literally only see us when they go looking for us, they won't go about their daily life accepting us as a normal person. They only want us when we're the hot t-girl they can wank too. Because it's not gay if it's a girl or whatever, right? They don't engage with us outside of where it's comfortable to do so. They accept us as sex objects, and then when we step away from that; and rather, when THEY step away from that; they can't separate those things in their mind.

If someone sees me as some hot t-girl they want to fuck, they won't ever see me as just a normal person who happens to be trans and happens to have an interest in other things. They'll only ever accept that I'm a "hot t-girl they want to fuck" and there-in lies what I believe is a big core issue. The fact we're only acceptable when they stand to gain something, and the thing they want to gain is sexual pleasure; so we by extension become aspects of sex. That never ends though, you see a trans woman when you're jacking off? Well that's hot! You see a trans woman in your local board game shop looking at the gundams? Oh no that's secretly a man! That's a sex pest! That's a perv!

This dawned on me because I was talking to a friend about it and I mentioned how:

"That would be like if I only saw my wife for her sexual qualities even when we weren't fucking. That'd be like if I saw my wife at the store and didn't see anything beyond some tits and ass. That'd be like if I didn't acknowledge her personality, who she is; and what she loves outside of the bedroom. That'd be insane!"

To which my friend simply replied:

"That's literally how straight men think though."

Which I didn't believe at first, but it seems to be more or less the case for the majority of cases. I know this is going to sound insane, but look at how a lot of people (primarily men) reacted to the new Silent Hill 2 remake. They immediately got upset that a woman looked like an everyday normal woman. They demanded mods to make her look less like "a man in a wig" they sexualized her, they didn't care at all about the story being told; they didn't care at all about the character's entire plot of sexual abuse. They literally saw a (albeit fictional) woman (in a game) and said "why isn't she fuckable!?"

I'd normally say this was exclusive to the way they view fictional women, because obviously you want to think better of people than that although that's still not good. However the more I talk to people, the more I understand how people think. The more I reflect on my time spent in adult entertainment fields and the way people would talk and act towards individuals even outside of work or outside of sexual context. It's hard to disagree that the MAJORITY (yes, I am literally saying not all men, if this shoe doesn't fit; don't wear it man) of straight men probably DO really see the world this way.

When you extend that to trans individuals you'll find that suddenly sure, yea; fuck it I guess we are just all sex pervs and degenerates. After all, the only trans people they know (and accept) are all a bunch of sluts and pervs and... well yes of course they were all in a place where that culture is acceptable, yes it was a discord server specifically for NSFW stuff; of course even the straight cis people acted the same way... but that's uh; that's CLEARLY different! They can convince themselves of that because they go out "into the real world" and they see so many other straight cis people who AREN'T like those weird perverted freaks!

It's literally an issue of ignorance and sample size. If all you allow yourself to see is the depraved sexual side of something, then no matter how normal and innocent it may be outside of that doesn't matter. It would be like if all you watched was Game of Thrones and then said "I don't want to watch Lord of the Rings; I hate how all these fantasy shows have so much nudity and sex!"

I've always felt that the jikookers vs. taemin feud kinda mirrored the taekookers vs. jimin situation, but at a much smaller scale, of course. I agree with you that they feel threatened by taemin's indisputable stature as an artist, as it disrupts the narrative that bts is always the first and always the best at everything, and also because jimin looks up to him and is influenced by him (as if it wasn't obvious enough before, now we got the confirmation from the man himself, thank you very much). This reminds me of taekookers getting mad at jimin for standing out so much as a performer. I mean, he obviously does, that's why they're always all up in his business instead of focusing on their favs' "records". Also, they hate the fact that they're close because they read taemin as queer, which makes them think that they actually might have kissed, once, at a party (just once). Kookie's friends look straight enough to them, so they can stay. A bit homophobic if you ask me. I'm sure that if we saw taemin around jimin publicly more often, he would've been already promoted to the same The Other Woman™ role jimin occupies for tkks. And besides all that, I could write an essay on why jimin's friendships have always been under scrutiny because many people can't take the fact that he has more going on in his life besides being the members' cheerleader and jungkook's devoted wife, but that's a different topic.

Thank you for this Ask, Anon. You raised a lot of salient points here. The one I'm gonna pick up on is Taemin's perceived queerness, with emphasis on perceived.

There is an odd thing that happens with non-fans. They mostly think he's gay, that it's obvious, and they don't really like their favourite having a connection to him. While, within the fandom community, shawols cannot decide if they think he's gay. If you were to ask around, you'd get quite a few different opinions.

I find it interesting because the "outside" community has very specific and strong opinions of him. I connected with a Korean-American lady in her 50s a while ago and talked about all things Kpop. She wasn't a shawol. One of the first things she said, unprompted, was, oh Taemin, he's gay but can never come out, what a shame/challenge for him (I was chatting from a 2Min account, just for context). I was a little floored at how readily she shared this fully-formed opinion.

It seems the world outside shawols have already made up their minds about him, in one way or another. I think about when he was young and had that beautiful long hair, but his frame was still so slight that the gender confusion for an onlooker was understandable. It must have been hard to have the world decide that you were sitting somewhere on the trans spectrum. And to know everyone thinks they know you're gay.

There is a zero percent chance of him not feeling these things, and he's certainly done both reactionary hetero-leaning performances and queer performances. Pretty Boy is and Internet War are the first that come to mind. And it's worth remembering that sometime in the early 2010s, there was a Korean news report about homosexuality in kpop idols, and he and Jonghyun were named in it (as a couple, I think 💀).

I don't love the song Pretty Boy, but the choreography with its military steps and these lyrics have a lot to say.

oh on the topic of chappell roan i wanna talk about how i think the discourse about mlm ship content featuring "good luck babe" is dumb.

yes the song itself is about a lesbian whose ex girlfriend is in a compulsory heterosexual relationship, and as such wlw relationships and womanhood and femininity will always be intrinsically relevant and crucial to the song's meaning and importance (especially concerning the phrase, "you're nothing more than his wife", as the status of being "just his wife" is much different from the status of being "just her husband" in a cultural & social sense), but mlm also experience compulsory heterosexuality and thus may heavily relate to the song; and personally, i don't think it's such a bad thing that they relate to it.

i feel like i should also mention that i'm not specifically only talking about cisgay men either; trans men (both binary and nonbinary) also experience the social pressure of feeling as if they need to "prove" they're "real men", which is often equated with being in a heterosexual relationship, and from what i've seen in my own experience online it's become normal for others to mock and belittle men for "never having felt a woman's touch" or getting "no bitches" (among other vaguely comphet & misogynistic "haha funny meme" statements). additionally, men are still relentlessly bullied for being gay. for as many allies and fictional mlm enjoyers there are, there's 10 more school bullies that harass their peers for their sexuality, 10 more parents who kick their sons out for trusting that their family will accept them for who they are, and 10 more dudebros that regularly make homophobic jokes to the discomfort of their closeted friends. even men in mlm relationships are forced into traditional heterosexual roles by others' expectations; i.e., the "who's the man in the relationship" question, the expected/"ideal" mlm couple being a feminine twink and a masculine "real" man (especially when one of the men in the relationship is trans)

in my opinion, i think that while chappell roan's music is heavily based off of being a lesbian and being in relationships with other women (since she is one herself), it's also representative of the general queer experience, and thus relating to it and making art dedicated to it shouldn't be reserved for just one group of people. no amount of animatics or edits posted on twitter or tiktok or anywhere can erase the original context of the song.

additionally if you don't like when people make such content featuring the song, you can just opt to ignore it or block the person who created the content rather than calling them "misogynistic" or "lesbophobic" for relating to a song. it takes much less time and effort.
