Check our pinned post and also read last year's article in the NYT, here's a gift link in case you don't have a subscription.
TL/DR, it's not best practice to wear gloves when handling books unless the book is going to hurt you if you don't, so we don't wear gloves. Like every other librarian or curator, we wash and dry hands thoroughly before handling books in our collections.
I'd like to introduce you to LJS 57, a compendium of Astronomical text in Hebrew, written in Spain around 1391. It's an interesting combination of astronomy and astrology, and illustrates how the division between "science" and "not science" was not nearly so clear in the past as it is today. It has some fantastic illustrations of constellations!

i'm soooo glad to see domi back but i'm especially more glad to see that shes finally healing and coming out of louis' shadow, meaning that she's back to the feminine style she had as a kid. it couldn't make me happier, our girl is finally accepting herself 🥹🎀

look as someone with medium sized soft breasts it really bothers me when people portray bras as Evil Tools of Oppression that you will chose to frequently forgo once you're (a) Liberated (Woman). I wear a bra every day not because like. men tell me to. or like. i don't want my unfairly sexualized nips to show.
I wear a bra every day because it gives me support. Because otherwise I can't jump without it hurting -- any movement that makes my breasts swing makes the skin stretch, which can be a little painful. I wear a bra (or binder) every day because it makes clothes fit comfortably and I like the way it makes my body look. Going without a bra is not comfortable for me -- for one reason, I don't like wearing pajamas all day long and not wearing a bra puts me in that mentality, but in the same way I enjoy dressing up, I enjoy wearing a bra. (Edit: originally I forgot but they also stop me from feeling my sweaty skin stick together! big win!) But even regardless, my bra is a bag for my two hanging sacks of fat on my chest; it's convenient.
(PS: If your bra hurts, it's too small. Wear it looser or get a bigger one!)
Edit: I have more context for this post in the reblogs but I definitely let it overemphasize my personal feelings when the point I didn't realize I was trying to make was "bras are objects that serve a purpose besides a oppression; it is entirely reason for even a Liberated Feminist to chose to wear a bra". Also I was trying on my binder a different way and realized it's actually not too uncomfortable to not wear a bra with some shirts (may also depend on where in cycle) (I don't think wearing any short of shrug/sweater over would be comfortable though. I don't really like the way it looks but I may pick up lounging like this. #charactergrowth

Working with human pathogens is all fun and games until you're on your way home, about to snack, and get the mandatory 'did I wash my hands after leaving the lab?' surge of fear 💀

hmm i have like, 500-600 taiwan dollars leftover in a tin from the last time i visited relatives... i wonder what would happen if i just handed it to my little cousins like. "yep. here is gift. have fun."
#i heard them trying to sound out 'eidelweiss' on the piano so i've also been thinking of giving them this little music box i bought#a while back that plays eidelweiss. put it in little box with money and letter that is like. 'hello. cousin cares about you.'#'but cousin is awkward and has bad hearing and speaking skills. anyway here's some money and a music box for you.'#i checked n it's like the equivalent of almost 20 usd so like. that's an appropriate gift for nine-year-olds i think#today at work i was cutting glow sticks in half for our craft and i was not wearing any gloves so i got minor chemical burns <3#like part of the skin on my thumb n pointer finger got bleached so i went around n showed alllll the kids#like. 'hey. check out my chemical burn. this is why we wouldn't let you guys cut open the glow sticks yourselves.'#'because it will do This to you if you touch them too long. this is why we had you wash your hands when you finished.'#n some of them were like 'just wash it off' n i was like. 'it is a chemical burn. it is on my skin.'#at least i Think it was a chemical burn but i mean it was very minor (makes sense bc it's just glow sticks) so the skin's flaked off by now#similar happens when i touch my hair bleach w/o gloves so i'm Pretty Sure it was chemical burns#we had a table of kids who were speaking cn to each other so at some point i pieced together they didn't seem to pay attn. bc low en skills#anyway i broke my own rule abt no phones at work to look up 'chemical burns' in cn for them bc although they know i speak Some cn#(by giving them minor instructions for the glow stick craft) i was like. 'chemical burns... how to say....'#apparently they are mostly from taiwan which is fun i love it when i Don't receive microaggressions for writing in traditional c':#today's my only camp shift for the week tho... one of my coworkers died last week so i told my boss i could pick up his camp shifts#if no one else had but apparently i'd go over hours this week... feelsbad man. it's summer + we're always understaffed#so there's gonna be a point when the front desk worker is gonna be covering the camps for a little bit which is. i feel bad ahaha#the worm speaks

Well now, who’s this dashing person? No way could this upstanding man ever be the type to ditch his comfortable position on the court of Spades and become a Joker -- right?
Hahaha, yeah, this is Jacob Cromwell, long before his Escape Artist days, back when he still happily worked for the infamous “Counselor,” the Jack of Spades, Duncan Ashe! Looks like he’s just about to head into work, getting off the trolley so he can walk the rest of the way through the capitol to see his OTL buddy, Ashe. Today he’s by himself and looking chipper, but trust me, on those days he could bring his little sister Carewyn with him into the capitol, you’d find Jacob in an even more cheerful mood. It was not uncommon back in those days for Jacob and Carewyn to end up entertaining the passengers of the trolley with their singing, since Jacob would be so thrilled to share his work with his sister and spend time with both her and Ashe, and Carewyn would just feed off of Jacob’s enthusiasm. ^.^
Music accompaniment while working on this piece included The Trolley Song from Meet Me in St. Louis, Merry-Go-Round of Life from Howl’s Moving Castle, We Built This City by Starship, Why Should I Worry? from Oliver and Company and Down in New Orleans from The Princess and the Frog. Jacob’s outfit, if colored, I see following Duncan’s color scheme quite a bit -- Jacob even has an ascot similar to his boss’s. You also may notice that if you count up all the spades in Jacob’s outfit -- including the fingerless Spade-themed gloves -- that he’s wearing exactly nine spades, which corresponds to the card I associate with him!
Much love, all! Hope you have a magical day! ♠️

On Contamination By Ideas
Let's set aside, for the moment, the issue of giving JKR monetary encouragement in her bigotry. I consider that question settled: anyone who's decided to pay for Hogwarts Legacy has made a bad choice. That's not the issue I'm addressing here, so let's say someone has pirated it.
Hogwarts Legacy has harmful ideas in it. Hogwarts Legacy has many, very harmful ideas in it.
From the slaves that want to be slaves to the people who just want equal rights and also their shofar back but for some reason go about this by kidnapping innocents, HL is full of terrible ideas.
People are going to play this game.
Even if they didn't, frankly, they would still be exposed to harmful ideas from some other source. There is no way to avoid harmful ideas.
"We should at least avoid what we can!" some people say, and this is an understandable argument.
But consider: better than trying to avoid contact with harmful ideas is learning to think critically about them when, inevitably, you encounter them. Since harmful ideas can't be entirely avoided, wouldn't it be nice to practice recognizing them as harmful so they can't dig their way into your subconscious while you're not looking?
People are going to play Hogwarts Legacy.
People are going to read Lovecraft.
People are going to read the Christian bible.
People are going to enjoy media that contains harmful ideas. If there is any media that is completely free of harmful ideas, I have yet to encounter it!
Critical thinking is the salvation of decent people here. We have to be able to spot the poison so we don't internalize it, otherwise our only two choices are "consume media uncritically" and "consume no media at all." Rather than pushing people towards option two, it seems more useful to encourage critical engagement with whatever media a person wants to enjoy.
People are going to enjoy media that contains harmful ideas.
It doesn't have to taint their worldview.

For those who haven't heard much about Rabies (I used to live near a bat colony so I learned a lot as a kid and recently realized it is NOT as common knowledge as I assumed), this shit will kill you dead.
I am not trying to freak anyone out, but if you have any reason to believe you may have had contact with a rabid animal (or person), you need medical attention yesterday.
I can find very limited information about unvaccinated survivors - according to the internet, Jeanna Geise is one of, if not the only person in the world to survive without vaccination, and her story still involves intensive medical treatment. I want you to look at fatality rate on the Wikipedia article, where it says: "Prognosis~100% fatal after onset of symptoms[1]"
The good news is we've had effective treatment for over a century, thanks Louis Pasteur, so get yourself to a clinic or hospital asap.
So yeah, if you were at the event, if you know someone who was at the event, or if you have any way of getting the word out: let them know.
SHIT.
Please reblog!
