Got to thinking about how mending our own clothing/textiles isn't something that's widely taught/encouraged now while I was sewing my blanket back together. Made me remember a lot of people I know don't even know how it is done. Do you know how to sew?

Back in my sewing era because Fallout Fic Research (and also need clothes but it's ya boi No Dolla) thought I'd share a selection of videos from my research files about making & mending clothing without a sewing machine.
Humans clothed ourselves long before the advent of machine assistance. Your average Wastelander might need to take advantage of patchwork & hand- making and mending techniques - sewing machines need maintenance and would probably be a luxury. Textile making is a different problem to tackle that I'll post about later, but for now: Some videos that cover how Wastelanders might make & mend clothing without a sewing machine!
What You ACTUALLY Need to Make Clothes in an Apocalypse - Bernadette Banner please check her out if you love learning through a historical lens! You might know her from bangers such as
Some mending techniques:
Boro is a textile repair technique that uses patches. Sachiko is often associated with elaborate geometric stitching. Both make use of existing materials and are examples of visible mending that have a low barrier to entry and a high skill ceiling. A Wastelander who takes up mending as a trade would be a much-valued member of a community- not only could you repair clothing this way, but you could make new pieces as well.

there are days that it is hard, and unfair, and some horrible part of me wishes i could have been born in a different world. i love being queer, i hate how others react to it. when i first came out at 15, my mom whispered: please don't say that. your life would be so much harder.
it is harder.
it is also a tuesday, walking my dog. we are both skiving off of work, and yes both of us have dyed hair and pronouns. mine is patchy - it was my first time trying bleach; i didn't have enough. theirs is a resilient toadstool green. a little girl comes up to us and asks um, excuse me? is your hair real? 'cause jason says you're a fairy.
it is sunday brunch, all of us talking over each other, overfull on love. she is trying out a new name today, and we made her a cake with today's name scrawled in shaky purple letters. she laughs so much she cries and then gets frosting in her hair. someone young at a different table keeps giving us these large, wide eyes: the same look we have all been on the other side of. the kind that says, breathless: wait, is that possible?
it is a half-fight in a supermarket because he loves "dance moms" and says abby's tiktok is funny and meanwhile i think the children in that show should be allowed to sue abby lee miller for child abuse. i tell him that it led to the casual acceptance of child harassment for mainly adult views; and then i am standing, suddenly, in someone else's thrown soda. there's a white lady standing there, furious, saying something about hell-on-earth. i had forgotten i was wearing stuff with pride colors. and then it is this: he had just been casually arguing with me - and within an instant, he squares his shoulders and goes after her like i am his sister
on saturday i sat in a circle while beca played with my hair and we were all over 30 and we laughed about how much happier we are being this old, how much more we appreciate our community. 25 minutes from now, we will be on stage to dance in baggy beige clothing, but for now we look on with envy to the dancers in loud-and-bright buttondowns. where are they getting these shirts! i cry, distraught. everyone laughs. one of our friends has a mushroom witch hat. this would have been cringey in high school, probably. instead we are all delighted with each other; happy just to be here and alive and moving
it's that last week my new friends cried with joy for me when they heard i'm getting top surgery. every so often i have the honor of being the first person someone feels comfortable enough to tell. i'm trying to make long fluttery butterfly wings to wear to pride; but i don't know anything about fabric or dye, so my friends have been sending me their personal advice.
i think in a different poem i would talk about how sometimes you walk into a room and put the mask back on. but i'm sleepy and my whole brain is fuzzy so i think in this one, it's a monday, and my dog and i took a nap on a couch, and i had missed texts from friends. i used to wake up lonely. i think this poem is about walking into a room and seeing someone and just knowing, the way you just-know-sometimes, and then giving them that little smile, and seeing them light up with joy and relief. it is how we always seem to be able to find each other in a crowded room. how we always seem to make friends with each other before even we know-it-to-be-true. it is saying: we're very different people; but i belong to you.
it is harder, yes. but it comes with a built-in family.
#wish this was better written!!! but im sleepy!!#writeblr#pride#lgbt#but for real please help me make these lesbian wings. gonna get the supplies tomorrow . i have#no sewing machine but know how to hand sew#have never done a good job with tie dye so idk why im just runnin with it#ps im specifically going to boston pride next weekend come hang out with me

working in a factory has you thinking so much about the insane chain of labor & transport that goes into making literally anything
#like first you realize that You are making & doing things that you previously had thought - if you'd thought abt it at all - were automated#& you become incredibly aware of how all the materials you're working with came from somewhere - these plastic clips are from france; this#fabric is from india etc. and that there are people in factories there making those things and that they are also probably getting their#materials from somewhere#one of the little things that makes me think about this the most is we have these 50m rolls of cotton banding we see onto canvas & nets#and in theory it should be all one piece but sometimes it's actually two pieces which you discover when you get far enough in the roll and#find that there's a join where it's been stitched together by hand (!). which is a little annoying bc we can't use that bit so you have#to cut that but out & stitch it together again on the machine which interrupts what you were sewing before & slows you down But it's so#striking to me bc like it's really easy to look at this banding & it's so exactly the same & obviously machine made it's Really easy to#forget that there are people there running these machines. who notice there's a break & have to stop what they're doing & get a needle &#thread and stitch it together. by hand! like someone somewhere has handled exactly where I'm touching it & i don't even know where in the#world they are!#the other place this happens is often on the selvedge edge of the fabric there's writing in pencil i don't know ye meaning of but evidently#was important to the process somewhere & someone wrote that out#idk like it's really easy to watch those videos of really specific machines in factories & convince yourself that everything is automated#but the truth is the vast majority of stuff is not & is made by people doing that. & even when it is there are people running those machine#<- and i'm not saying this in a soppy way tbc. this whole system is a nightmare of exploitation & to some degree I'm just continually amaze#by how insane this whole process is & also how completely un-transparent it is unless you are made to think abt it#another thing is noticeable when you look at our orders that most of what we sell isn't to customers it's to shops who then sell to custome#which then makes you think like. those plastic clips from france are they actually made in france or are we just buying them from france?#are they actually made by underpaid people in a country the name of which is completely lost to the chain of production at this point#anyways none of this is new it's just when you are working in a factory using this stuff you start wondering like.#what's the factory like that the person who stitched this banding together like. what's their day like there#wish we could talk abt how fucked up this all is - for them especially probably - together#thoughts

so help me god if I tanked the chance for a well-paid job with full medical benefits, sick leave, paid vacation time, etc. because I hardly ever do machine seam-finishing
I'm going to be. really really really upset
#personal#did a sewing test for a theatrical costuming job at a big local theatre the other day#did my best but I know some of my samples were probably quite wonky because I'm used to finishing seams by hand#and thus having more control to make adjustments as I go#a few I had to look up how to do on my phone- but then the proctor told me I could do that and they do it frequently in the shop#I go back and forth between 'it'll be fine; I probably did fine; they SAID they take all skill levels and that they google how to do things#and 'oh there's no WAY I'm getting this gig'#it was an interesting experience because the shop manager like. stopped me on the street to ask if I made my dress#and then if I would be interested in maybe joining her team#but now I'm like 'are they even going to believe I made the things I sent them pics of'#'or that they saw me wearing [I wore my winter coat to the test because it was V. Cold]'#'after my machine-felling on organza was an uneven disgrace'#I can fit and copy patterns from books and even do a bit of draping#I can do a lot of hand-stitching finishes pretty quickly and evenly#I can do insertion lace and soutache#I've made hats before#but I just. haven't done a lot of machine-finishing#and that's all they tested me on really#also sewing on snaps and one (1) hand-finishing stitch#(one I hardly ever use anyway- catch-stitch/zigzag stitch)#(I fell my hems generally speaking)

I've hired this thing to stand there. Menacingly.
Wow, he's so good at tha--
Nevermind.
He also sits very politely though (needs assistance to do so, but hey! He's polite.)
#wip#diy plush#i wasn't entirely sold on the legs last night tbh. i really am just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks#sewing machines DO help in the process of 'sculpting' a plush. the test legs i had on sharena#one of them. the one that had any sewing on it at all. was hand sewn! and pinned to size#and all i know is that. if i do wanna replicate that. i'll need to turn it and redo it. pain .#so i just. tried something different. the legs here felt too thin? but kind of the perfect length for alfonse#but also. i don't know! one part of me wants them to be sturdy enough so he can stand w ease#but once i add all the bells and whistles like. that may not matter at all. once he's Heavy .#it's been like. a balancing act. to figure out how the body should be in size/shape when i'm planning on#having like. Layers. ESPPPP ON THIS SMALL OF A SCALE. gotta be careful not to make him too bulky#sewing machine does give you more freedom to fuck around and find out. but at the cost of less control.#which could be a skill issue. but i'm TRYING‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️😤😤😤😤#plushies really do just. i need one good night's sleep to decide how i feel.#yesterday i was largely out of spoons and then feeling Dubious about The Legs.#had a magical experience and got posessed to make a bootleg greentext post. you know how it is#fe alfonse

uh oh having ideas outside of my realistic ability range (wanting to make a maxi skirt out of an old tapestry I got from a friend)
#I JUST THINK IT WOULD BE SLAAAYYY#but I only know how to hand sew and don’t know how to use a clothing pattern and don’t have a sewing machine#but I HAVE mended and hemmed my own clothes before ????? much to consider#could be cool……. or could be a flop and I’d have ruined a nice swath of fabric

I haven’t taken Kei out in a while. He’s getting dusty.. so I took him out to pick some mint n make some lemonade
#ajin#kei nagai#pocket kei#Ajin nendroid#I have been wanting to practice sewing on the new sewing machine we got#so ofc I thought making Kei clothes would use the least amount of fabric n spend the least amount of time…#but no.. it’s too tiny for a sew machine#I nearly broke the machine n I cut my hand open trying 😭😭#maybe it was the fabric I used. maybe a different kind will be better#but it is hard when the stuff is SO tiny you can’t even see what you’re doing#and like I said idk how to use a sewing machine#I don’t even know how to sew#I’ve bullshitted all my projects so far 😭

I might take a break from the puppy for a bit and ruminate on the pattern, what do you guys think I should shift my focus to in the meantime?
#I got a little daunted by the clown dogs but I honestly think part of it was not wanting to stitch up two entire bodies by hand#so with the sewing machine that should be much easier. Then I just gotta figure out what little clown accessories they should have#for Cat and Rabbit I have a general plan already and bought wire and everything plus I still have the minky blanket earmarked for that#but I would also need to make them little clothes... which will be much trickier bc I don't know how to make clothes much less doll clothes

Ah the wonders of bag lining
#I'm plotting out how I'll be constructing my cloak/poncho for my Siffrin cosplay#And lemme tell ya I WILL be making myself a step-by-step guide because I apparently decided to make this difficult#Mainly by wanting as little visible seams as possible#AND wanting to have the collar section be a separate piece from the main cloak body (Imagine a turtleneck for reference)#AND embroidered constellation stitching on the inner bottom hem#With probably two different fabric types (Darkless wool on the outside and lightless cotton/silk if affordable on the inside)#With preferably the lining having a speckled patterning to mimic the night sky#I have high ambitions and don't know how to work a sewing machine so we'll see how it goes#But I CAN hand stitch. I'll probably be making like 15 prototypes first since I do want this to be a functional clothing piece#Both in and outside of cosplay#Now Siffrin's hat? Man I don't want to think about that rn other than it'll probably involve either horsehair or copious amounts of wire#ramblings about nothing/everything

#my initial overtures have been harrowing and thusfar unsuccessful#by hand. btw. i think we have my mom's old sewing machine SOMEWHERE but it's buried and ancient and frankly i don't know how to use it#and im certainly not going to be able to learn effectively before magfest#(why do i think i can learn to sew gloves before then? hubris i guess)#(and a lack of ability to find suitable gloves elsewhere)#(i'm picky re: cosplay gear)#craftblr#hlep

ik this scene was played off as a joke but if i'm being honest this is like one of the few aspects when it comes to sam being alt that the show gets right in that it would make sense for sam to be diy w his fashion
#that's smth i do want to lean more into for him actually#it would make sense for sam to know how to sew by hand and/or use a sewing machine#even learning how to crochet and/or knit thru grandma ida#and just taking the clothes his parents give him and finding ways to turn it into stuff he actually likes and wants to wear#robi rambles
