i often see the take in fics and whatnot that after The Article drops, mae grows actively hostile to trent, barely softening even when ted is with him for whatever reason. and like, i'm not saying i necessarily disagree that this could happen--ted kind of inspires that sort of loyalty, you know? and especially with other loyal locals, like the pub lads or shannon, i definitely can see that reaction happening. but with mae. i don't know, something about makes me sad. and there's two things here i'm thinking about: one. trent and mae seem somewhat familiar in the little interaction we see between them. trent seems to actually come to the crown & anchor not necessarily just because ted goes there--he even goes so far to bring a date there, only talking to ted by chance when he happens to be there--so like, i think it's fair to say he could easily be a regular, or at least not uncommon a visitor. likely long before even ted. he does work in the area, so like, it makes sense. so. i dunno. something about that makes me sad. two: when i do see this take, there is rarely... the follow-up? even if she begrudgingly backs off when ted stands with him, it's all a throwaway line, you know? trent earns back trust as he shadows the coaches and the team at nelson road, shows himself to be earnest and here to build rather than destroy, but this sort of offhand comment--and this isn't a criticism, really, i understand the fics are just about something else--not getting the follow-up also makes me sad. bc like. he's been here. this is his home. you know? but still--just. man. if we're gonna go with mae is pissed (which again, valid) i wanna see him being taken aback when she softens on him again. like he thought it was just a bridge forever burned, that he can't be forgiven, and it's almost comforting that some people, at least, will always see him for what he is, that they don't just forgive him just like that, that he'll be watched, held accountable, that if he ever--hey she just smiled at me. he doesn't know what to do with that. like. you can be forgiven. you can change and grow and be who you really are on the inside and people will see that. you know? is this anything im just very emo about a very specific thing that doesn't even happen that much,

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
