Whats your opinion on the aristocracy? ? Try to avoid bias due to your noble-ish status
-Easy
well im more of a "knob-lish" than a noble :p i dont exactly like the general idea of an upper class (french revolution time :3)
that being said, i do get called "noble" every now and then which is kinda funny :3

ACADEMIC RIVALS TROPE
TAG-LISH FIC
LIGHT PLOT
HIGHSCHOOL AU
MITSUYA TAKASHI X READER
Tumblr media
╰┈➤ ❝ [ivory in rivalry]
People say that in every class, there is always a student who is number one in everything, a top notcher, top one and in honors, whose name is always on the bulletin boards, and who is simply striving for excellence in their class.
But what if in section A, two students are rivals in everything? Especially in academics.
Mitsuya Takashi, the stereotypical cold smart guy in class, who is always number one in everything, and of course, his academic rival, L/n Y/n, a girl who always tries her hardest and strives to be number one in everything, but in the end, she always comes in second place, behind Mitsuya Takashi, and that's why she transferred to a different school, but after three years, she returned, and to her surprise, Mitsuya is still her classmate.
Will their so-called academic rivalry trope continue again after all these years?
Tumblr media
╰┈➤ ❝ [author's note!]
hello! so this will be a tag-lish fanfic! this won't have a heavy plot, just a highschool academic rivals au, where the plot is light, cute, fluff, brings nostalgia during highschool days, academic rivals <3 and cliche, but kung gusto mo ng cold na may soft spot sayo, smart, conyo, rich, medjo bully na mitsuya?? then go ahead and read this HAHAHAHAHA, i swear some scenes will be corny, you know, one of those typical ganaps during highschool days, especially if ure a filipino and u r familiar with these. i apologize for any grammatical errors lalo na pag tagalog, please correct me! im not sanay na magsulat in tagalog but im trying, thank you! :DD
it's available on wattpad and ao3 (if the link doesn't work just search kiwitooth)

character candles
So last night I was telling lish ( @buckysbeloved ) about my character candles so I thought i’d just make a master post about them and the scents they are
I’ll start with my star wars ones first which i have 3 characters: Din, Poe and Cassian
Din: Vanilla & Bergamot, the candle i have also has a slight hint of coconut but overall its a clean scent and simple to me. Bergamot has a little bit of a citrus note but it’s been said to help ease stress and anxiety which we know din is stressed (and im anxious it’s a perfect match)
Poe: His candle is called Harvest Nights and has notes of warm birchwood, smoked cedar and ambered hickory with crushed spices and hints of autumn plum. It has a warmth feeling to it like its one that brings the comfort of a hug (at least to me) or like being bundled up in blankets on a rainy night
Cassian: His candle is called sweater weather ( a bi anthem we love the neighborhood) but the listed fragrance notes for it are fresh sage, juniper berry, aromatic eucalyptus and fresh woods. It’s a sharp clean scent and its like not over the top.
The other candle I have for a character is one I bought that people were saying was good for Poe and I didn’t like so its become my Santi candle but that one is a whiskey and oak candle which just has a spicy scent to it like its hard to explain

tagged by @purnotas thank u sumsum !!
✨ what do you prefer to be called name wise?
ali or lish or u can call me any terms of endearment im ok with it <3
✨ when is your birthday?
sept 19th
✨ where do you live?
peru
✨ three things you are doing right now?
drinking fruit tea, listening to svt and opening photoshop
✨ four fandoms that have piqued your interest right now?
i guess brightwin fandom is like a subfandom of 2gether fandom? is that how it is....fandomception. ok cql, 2gether, kpop (lots of artists and groups) and lemme just add brightwin to the mix bc why not (that fandom name tho im gonna kick their asses)
✨ how is the pandemic treating you?
its just me and my dad and i havent left the house but the compulsory lockdown ended so u can technically go out, theres a curfew tho.
the first 2 months were good, i was working out and my sleep schedule was so great then june came around and literally wtf happened... i guess once the actual cold began, i spiraled into depr*ssion again... i dont know but i got a job now and i’m gonna have to leave the house mon-fri so i better get my shit together now.
the pandemic has brought me so many introspective thoughts and feelings and ive learned even more about myself. i also baked a lot and cooked a lot and learned many recipes. also I MADE THIS BLOG :D so that was such a good outcome and im very pleased with that.
✨ song you can’t stop listening right now?
the new svt album i just cant believe how great their discography is
✨ recommend a movie.
saving face
✨ how old are you?
26
✨ school, university, occupation, other?
graduated high school, dropped out of college and took a long time for myself to discover my passion for teaching!! so now i work at a tutoring center online and i have some students.
✨ do you prefer hot or cold?
weather wise?? i love summer but just the right amount of heat with some cool breeze. drinking wise or eating wise? i eat ice cream every season or drink hot drinks every season, it might not be good for me but.... :)

✨ are you shy?
i used to be but i think at this point ive overcome that but i do have anxiety so that sucks
✨ do you have any preferred pronouns?
she/her or they/them is fine
✨ any pet peeves?
online? i dont like when people are always negative or mean for some reason i think we’re way past that whole mean persona on the internet. and also ppl who are overly condescending. both online and irl counts.
irl? i dont like cocky people, i think theres a limit between confidence and cockiness and sometimes that throws me off. even online as well. at first sight, i feel like i can feel ppl’s energy really fast, but tbh im a very emotional person and i let everything show when i feel it so if im angry or sad, u will know lmao
✨ what’s your favorite “dere” type?
am i supposed to know this?? ok i googled it and i think i love the dandere characters that are more quiet and reserved but when they’re with the ones they love they go out of their shell. thats so wholesome
✨ rate your life 1-10. 1 being really crappy and 10 being the best you could ever be.
ill skip this bc the lockdown brought everything to a lower grade but im thankful for where i am and for being able to spend time with my dad. i still have a long way to go and a lot of things i wanna do.
✨ what’s your main blog?
this one i dont have another blog
✨ is there anything you think people need to know about you before becoming friends with you?
i sometimes can be very available and then very unavailable so that might show off as if i ghost ppl, but tbh online im kinda always here lmao
also sometimes i can be confident with mutuals and it might come across as overstepping for ppl who are more reserved, if theres any uncomfort pls never hesitate to let me know!!! its all a learning process

He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving;
Allazee khalaqa sab'a samaawaatin tibaaqam maa taraa fee khalqir rahmaani min tafaawutin farji'il basara hal taraa min futoor
He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of ((Allah)) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?
Summar ji'il basara karrataini yanqalib ilaikal basaru khaasi'anw wa huwa haseer
Again turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out.
Wa laqad zaiyannas samaaa'ad dunyaa bimasaa beeha wa ja'alnaahaa rujoomal lish shayaateeni wa a'tadnaa lahum 'azaabas sa'eer
And we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
Wa lillazeena kafaroo bi rabbihim 'azaabu jahannama wa bi'sal maseer
For those who reject their Lord (and Cherisher) is the Penalty of Hell: and evil is (such), Destination.
Izaaa ulqoo feehaa sami'oo lahaa shaheeqanw wa hiya tafoor
When they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath even as it blazes forth,
Takaadu tamayyazu minal ghaizi kullamaaa ulqiya feehaa fawjun sa alahum khazanatuhaaa alam yaatikum nazeer
Almost bursting with fury: Every time a Group is cast therein, its Keepers will ask, "Did no Warner come to you?"
Qaaloo balaa qad jaaa'anaa nazeerun fakazzabnaa wa qulnaa maa nazzalal laahu min shai in in antum illaa fee dalaalin kabeer
They will say: "Yes indeed; a Warner did come to us, but we rejected him and said, '(Allah) never sent down any (Message): ye are nothing but an egregious delusion!'"
Wa qaaloo law kunnaa nasma'u awna'qilu maa kunnaa feee as haabis sa'eer
They will further say: "Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we should not (now) be among the Companions of the Blazing Fire!"
Fa'tarafoo bizambihim fasuhqal li as haabis sa'eer
They will then confess their sins: but far will be (Forgiveness) from the Companions of the Blazing Fire!
Innal lazeena yakhshawna rabbahum bilghaibi lahum maghfiratunw wa ajrun kabeer
As for those who fear their Lord unseen, for them is Forgiveness and a great Reward.
Wa asirroo qawlakum awijharoo bihee innahoo 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor
And whether ye hide your word or publish it, He certainly has (full) knowledge, of the secrets of (all) hearts.
Alaa ya'lamu man khalaq wa huwal lateeful khabeer
Should He not know,- He that created? and He is the One that understands the finest mysteries (and) is well-acquainted (with them).
Huwal lazee ja'ala lakumul arda zaloolan famshoo fee manaakibihaa wa kuloo mir rizqihee wa ilaihin nushoor
It is He Who has made the earth manageable for you, so traverse ye through its tracts and enjoy of the Sustenance which He furnishes: but unto Him is the Resurrection.
'A-amintum man fissamaaa'i aiyakhsifa bi kumul arda fa izaa hiya tamoor
Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?
Am amintum man fissamaaa'i ai yursila 'alaikum haasiban fasata'lamoona kaifa nazeer
Or do ye feel secure that He Who is in Heaven will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones), so that ye shall know how (terrible) was My warning?
Wa laqad kazzabal lazeena min qablihim fakaifa kaana nakeer
But indeed men before them rejected (My warning): then how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)?
Awalam yaraw ilat tairi fawqahum saaaffaatinw wa yaqbidn; maa yumsikuhunna illaar rahmaan; innahoo bikulli shai im baseer
Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly ((Allah)) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things.
Amman haazal lazee huwa jundul lakum yansurukum min doonir rahmaan; inilkaafiroona illaa fee ghuroor
Nay, who is there that can help you, (even as) an army, besides ((Allah)) Most Merciful? In nothing but delusion are the Unbelievers.
Amman haazal lazee yarzuqukum in amsaka rizqah; bal lajjoo fee 'utuwwinw wa nufoor
Or who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision? Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth).
Afamai yamshee mukibban 'alaa wajhihee ahdaaa ammany yamshee sawiyyan 'alaa siratim mustaqeem
Is then one who walks headlong, with his face grovelling, better guided,- or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way?
Qul huwal lazee ansha akum wa ja'ala lakumus sam'a wal absaara wal af'idata qaleelam maa tashkuroon
Say: "It is He Who has created you (and made you grow), and made for you the faculties of hearing, seeing, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give.
Qul huwal lazee zara akum fil ardi wa ilaihi tuhsharoon
Say: "It is He Who has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered together."
Wa yaqooloona mataa haazal wa'du in kuntum saadiqeen
They ask: When will this promise be (fulfilled)? - If ye are telling the truth.
Qul innamal 'ilmu 'indallaahi wa innamaaa ana nazeerum mubeen
Say: "As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone: I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public."
Falaammaa ra-awhu zulfatan seee'at wujoohul lazeena kafaroo wa qeela haazal lazee kuntum bihee tadda'oon
At length, when they see it close at hand, grieved will be the faces of the Unbelievers, and it will be said (to them): "This is (the promise fulfilled), which ye were calling for!"
Qul ara'aytum in ahlaka niyal laahu wa mam ma'iya aw rahimanaa famai-yujeerul kaafireena min 'azaabin aleem
Say: "See ye?- If Allah were to destroy me, and those with me, or if He bestows His Mercy on us,- yet who can deliver the Unbelievers from a grievous Penalty?"
Qul huwar rahmaanu aamannaa bihee wa 'alaihi tawakkalnaa fasata'lamoona man huwa fee dalaalim mubeen
Say: "He is ((Allah)) Most Gracious: We have believed in Him, and on Him have we put our trust: So, soon will ye know which (of us) it is that is in manifest error."
Qul ara'aytum in asbaha maaa'ukum ghawran famai yaateekum bimaaa'im ma'een
Say: "See ye?- If your stream be some morning lost (in the underground earth), who then can supply you with clear-flowing water?"

Establish
late 14c., from Old French establiss-, present participle stem of establir "cause to stand still, establish, stipulate, set up, erect, build" (12c., Modern French établir), from Latin stabilire "make stable," from stabilis "stable" (see stable (adj.)). For the unetymological e-, see e-.
1 : to institute (something, such as a law) permanently by enactment or agreement. 2 obsolete : settle sense 7. 3a : to make firm or stable. b : to introduce and cause to grow and multiply establish grass on pasturelands. 4a : to bring into existence : found established a republic.
Establish est tablish estab lish e stab lish a stab lish esta blish
Writing the word establish
An establishment like a pub i think of someone saying to the bar man what sort of establishment are you running here its bad service call your self a pub i so think so this establishment is a load of rubbish.
Reading establish
Thoughts of setting up a desteni place for people it would take a while to get established i feel as most people can get round the fact of reptilians and years of imprisonment of the mind but when people are at hte point of nowhere else to turn maybe thsi would be a great time to be about but do we need a place everything is done in your own homes i know but it would speed things up for many.
Getting a garden established is hard work everything dies here in macau its to wet and everything drowns or in aus its to dry and no water there no happy medium at all. Guilt shames comes up for the plants ive bought and that have died it seems so unfair to them and it my fault when its to hot i dont wan to do it and to cold its like if it need attention i should bother i should only plant plants that can survive the condition it is mean to live im full stop.
Im trying to establish myself within myself at the moment my beingness is coming through and i t needs a better foot hold than what it has right now it much better than it has been but i still have ot keep on top of the personalities and mind constructions
We have become pretty established in macau and aus i feel at home in both places it takes time to get to know a place get round make friends and so on.
Saying establish
Trying to get established id like to set a business up an establishment that will make good money for our future and for old age im noir sure what sort of thing id like to do yes i see i have to try a few things out.
To establish a name for myself i see this is what i want to do the more my process moves on i want ti help others so i have to get more established.
Sf
Does this definition support me no fear of not getting established i see after i just wrote that out i want it but how can i do what will need ot be done can i do it so yes being unsure and fearful i get it wrong is within it
Establish a stab bliss
Establish
To the point of bliss yes to be fully functional my being fully integrated with in set up fully
Fully aware within set up confident stable and calm
I will live this word with fully establishing myself within self to be fully functional to be a person of support.

[TRANS] MXM - 일단 나와 (Just Come Out) Lyrics
Baby, I have something to say today, so just come out for now To the park we go to often, just come out for now I’m already running towards you Baby come to me, just come out for now Baby love with me, just come out for now I’m already approaching you Tonight’s mood that is exciting in thoughts of you Baby girl, just come out for now
Somewhere along the way, you keep calling me baby Don’t call me baby I want to become a man now too I want to only show cool sides in your two eyes I want to hear your laughter all day long next to me I want to call you, baby Thinking about you without any reason The reason why I pushed you away recently is actually because I had too many thoughts about you I picture you every day Everything you do Everything you wear Even your temper, I like it all You’re pretty Seems like I’m gradually going crazy over you Seems like my heart is deeper than I thought, wow
Baby, I have something to say today, so just come out for now To the park we go to often, just come out for now I’m already running towards you Baby come to me, just come out for now Baby love with me, just come out for now I’m already approaching you Tonight’s mood that is exciting in thoughts of you Baby girl, just come out for now
Because I get nervous whenever I see you, my face turns red whenever I see you It’s something I worried about every night I’m going to tell you today that you’re the only one for me Forget my foolish side, babe I want to become a true man to you now I think about your every day, I want to say it now I want to approach you I can treat you well Can you be my girlfriend
Baby, I have something to say today, so just come out for now To the park we go to often, just come out for now I’m already running towards you Baby come to me, just come out for now Baby love with me, just come out for now I’m already approaching you Tonight’s mood that is exciting in thoughts of you Baby girl, just come out for now
Girl, hurry and think about me too I already smile whenever I see you, yeah We’re closer than friends You knew it the moment you saw me too Girl, I’ve already fallen for your smile You’ll probably fall for me today too, yeah I fell for you the moment I saw you I want to become closer to you, the two of us
Baby, I have something to say today, so just come out for now To the park we go to often, just come out for now I’m already running towards you Baby come to me, just come out for now Baby love with me, just come out for now I’m already approaching you Tonight’s mood that is exciting in thoughts of you Baby girl, just come out for now Just come out for now Just come out for now Just come out for now

19 - 21 :')
42 character development questions!
you and haru are going to make my brain super strong ;;w;; this also got pretty long again but i hope it’s cohesive…most of it was written at night and i started getting tired in some places….;; again sorry for the rambling askldjas i don’t know how to write good
19. How do they behave within a group? What role(s) do they take? Does this differ if they know and trust the group, versus finding themselves in a group of strangers? Why?
this one is a little bit easier than the others bc mitsuki already has a job! mood maker!! though it’s no fun to just stop there :v he gives yamato advice (maybe more of his philosophy) and talks to nagi when their restricted from IDOLiSH7 work. i don’t know if i can describe it right so i’ll just say mitsuki also takes on a big brother “““persona”““ for everyone too. with a group of strangers things are going to be awkward (for lack of a better term) at first; being the MC on “An ID♡LiSH Night With You!” helps of course. what’s better than keeping the conversation going ahah.
i mean with such high energy you’d expect him to get along with a lot of people!! ;w;
20. What kind of individual relationships do they have with others, and how do they behave in them? How are they different between intimate relationships like friends, family, and lovers versus more impersonal relationships?
im actually going to start with iori/familyi just barely touched on it in the last ask but even though mitsuki believes iori to be the “better” brother, he still cares and respects iori. he wants to protect him. OF COURSE THAT DOESN’T STOP BROTHERLY ANTICS like mitsuki using iori’s ticklish nature against him or THIS LITTLE GEM FROM STORY 1 CHAPTER 9,1Mitsuki:  That’s right, I forgot.  Today is the most important day…… I got a very important first-time experience today!Iori: …..and what’s that?Mitsuki: Comforting my crying little brother with a hug!Iori: Wa……–Mitsuki: It’s fine, don’t worry….your older brother is here!Mitsuki: You worked hard, didn’t you Iori?  You worked really hard.Iori: ….., ……s……stop it!  It’s embarrassing……i just want fun iori and mitsuki antics ww it could be very soft and sillyi think it’s also important to say that i think he gets along pretty well with their parents (i mean they drink together…that takes Guts) and their grandmother
of course with the rest of i7 i could go on for AGES bc THERE’S 6 OF THEM + STAFF (i.e banri, tsumugi, otoharu) SO I HAVE TO KINDA WING IT.for the other younger members, he definitely has a Big Brother vibe–Izumi Mitsuki: We finally got everyone together, despite how busy it’s been lately. Izumi Mitsuki: Tamaki, I’ll be watching TV in my room, so if you get hungry just eat what’s in the pot. Make sure to leave some for everyone else, though.Yotsuba Tamaki: Okie.Izumi Mitsuki: Don’t play too many games!Yotsuba Tamaki: Okay.
and
【MITSUKI】: No, that’s not it at all. Look, it’s because he coughs a lot.For me personally, being able to check on Riku’s health gives me peace of mind.【TSUMUGI】: Is that so……. How has his condition been recently?【MITSUKI】: Ever since it’s started getting colder, it’s been worse than before, maybe. When it sounds painful I’ll get up to go check on him, but every time I’ll bump into Iori in front of the door. Iori always tells me to go back to sleep and sends me back to my room, though.【TSUMUGI】: You’ve been looking after him, then, Mitsuki-san.【MITSUKI】: ‘Cause I’m right next door—. I’ve studied a variety, and I’ve set up a variety of countermeasures, so if anything happens I’m always telling him to contact me without hesitation. That’s why, it’s alright.
kinda help describe what i mean. he wants to protect them too ;;the older members are little bit trickier  so i’m cherry picking yamato bc REALLY this could on Forever ;; but the best i could do was from the rabbit hoodie rabbit chat (5/5) (any part really but this one had All the Boys so…)
【YAMATO】: I heard a bunch of embarrassing stories about you from your friends, Mitsu.【MITSUKI】: Get smashed and forget everything, you old fart.
btu also【MITSUKI】: Honestly you guys—!【YAMATO】: What’s honestly about it. Mitsu, you’re a bit lacking in awareness.【MITSUKI】: ‘Bout what?【YAMATO】: Awareness of how much you’re loved.【YAMATO】: For just whose sake do you think all of these people are gathered in this damn cramped living room for?【MITSUKI】: You bastard……..【MITSUKI】: Stop trying to make me cry even though you’re completely dead drunk……..
please call an ambulance bc im actually flooding the house with my cryingthis is the happiest group of boys i’ve ever seen i love ;; ;; ;; ;; ;;
21. What kind of relationships do they tend to intentionally seek out versus actually cultivate? What kind of social contact do they prefer, and why?
THIS IS THE ONE THAT I REALLY STRUGGLED WITH BECAUSE I REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT I WANT(ED) TO SAY;;w;; i had to...look up social contact....perhaps i’ll try to make this quick since i’ve already taken so much time doing everything else,,,
most relationships would be for good will and friendship. of course mutual respect and love are very important too; without good chemistry, it wouldn’t be as fun!!you could say the mitsuki’s cultivated relationships already have all that though ;w;

History~Todd’s Ltd
Todd’s Ltd (aka The Trinidad Arcade, the precursor to Stephens & Todd) c. 1897 ................................................................... There are different versions of how this store became the star of the Todd empire in Port-of-Spain during the 1800s.
Historian Angelo Bissessarsingh wrote that Todd was an Englishman who came to Trinidad in 1852 and started business with small dry-goods shop along Frederick Street.
In an article headlined The Trinidad Arcade published in the Trinidad Guardian in 2013, Bissessarsingh wrote: “James Todd was an Englishman who had come to the island in 1852 and commenced business in a modest way with a small dry-goods shop on rented premises at 12 Frederick Street."

According to Gerard Besson, however, James Todd was a Scotsman who came to Port-of-Spain in 1838, ten years after he had started a jewellery store in San Fernando.
In The Caribbean History Archives, Besson wrote: “Another old Scottish firm on Frederick Street was Todd. It had started off as a jewellery store in 1828 in San Fernando under the name James Todd and Sons. In 1838, James Todd relocated to Port of Spain...”
In Bissessarsingh’s account, Todd accumulated considerable wealth from cocoa export as he had purchased cocoa estates, and also took cocoa as payment for goods purchased.
“James Todd acquired several cocoa estates, especially in the rapidly developing hinterlands east of Chaguanas and in the rolling hills near the Caparo River valley. As with most other large businesses at the time, Todd's offered a line of credit to cocoa farmers that allowed them to take goods during the year without cash payment, the score being settled when the cocoa harvest was brought in. Sacks of dried beans would be valued as currency and thus the merchant was able to turn an additional profit from exporting cocoa. This activity coupled with his thriving mercantile trade made him a very affluent man indeed by the time he died in 1884.”
Besson, on the other hand, attributed the start of the Frederick Street business to Todd’s wife.
“In 1838, James Todd relocated to Port of Spain, took on a partner and went off to the sea, which ahd been his first love. The partner, however, absconded ten years later with the valuable stock. It was Jamie Todd, James’ wife, who single-handedly restarted the business. She bought some unclaimed crockery at Customs, and in the years to come, the genial businesswoman made Todd become a renowned dealer in china.”
The story, according to Bissessarsingh, continued this way:
“(Todd) had taken his son, David, into the business as a director, but tragedy struck when David died a year after his father. The reins passed to James's grandson, James B L Todd, who proved that he was very capable of assuming stewardship of the work of two generations. The younger Todd had a knack for feeling the pulse of the economy and in a time when a new middle class was emerging, he realised that there was a need for cheap, elegant furniture at reasonable cost since hitherto, the best furnishings were imported from the United States and Europe and were very expensive. Todd and Sons opened a workshop on Chacon Street, which used local woods culled right from the Todd estates. Another subsidiary, on Queen Street, was called the West End Carriage Factory, which encompassed a saddlery and blacksmith shop as well, since this was the era before motor traffic. The showpiece of the Todd empire was the store it owned on Frederick Street. In the wake of the 1895 fire it was rebuilt completely in signature George Brown style. Dubbed the Trinidad Arcade, it was one of the finest establishments in the city and occupied the entire width of the block between Frederick and Henry streets, with entrances at both ends. Schoolbooks, toys, clothing and hardware were attractively displayed along the corridor between the entrances. James B L Todd died in the 1930s, and the firm founded by his grandfather was forced to undergo several mergers and acquisitions in order to survive. Older generations would remember the establishment of Stephens and Todd, which in another incarnation was called Stephens, Fogarty's and Todd. These were names that once stood on their own as proud remembrances of a prosperous time in our history but which had all vanished by the end of the 1970s.”
Tumblr media
Besson’s version went this way: “The Todd’s oldest son succeeded in the business, but in 1870 he died after having been bitten by a rabid dog. The two smaller sons, William and James, were still children, and Mrs. Todd took them back to Scotland for their education. An uncle named Davidson bought into the company, and the name was changed to Davidson and Todd Limited. William and James returned in 1892. William fell ill and returned to Scotland, and James Todd jnr. was the one to continue in the family business. On 4th March, 1895, the great fire of Port of Spain originated from the Todd’s business premises. It left 57 business houses and residences burnt to the ground. The damage was an estimated £750,000 - a mindboggling sum at the time. The Todd family, however, rebuilt their business again, and two of James jnr.’s children, Bill and Winnifred, took over from their father. In 1953, Stephens bought Davidson and Todd. Winnifred, who had joined the firm in 1926 and developed the china department of the business, remained with Stephens and Todd Ltd. until 1972.” . . Eventually, the company underwent several mergers and acquisitions, and was known variously as Stephens and Todd’s; Stephens, Todd & Forgathy’s; and Stephens & Johnsons.
