okay, clearly somebody on the art team was having way too much fun while working on the CS 2019 title sequence XDD

because taking a closer look at some of the clutter on this table turned into noticing a pretty nifty collection of freeze-frame bonuses. To start with,

doesn’t that badge look awfully like a lab access card? True, it doesn’t quite match Heliogem’s logo from S1E06

but that it looks like a lab badge at all does bring that episode to mind. There's also a picture of one of Vermeer’s paintings in the upper right corner—The Astronomer, to be exact—along with a photograph of the interior of the Rijksmuseum from S1E05 (underneath what looks to be the security checkpoint from Carmen and Shadow-san’s visit to Moscow in S2E07).

Once the hat is lifted, a second photo is revealed, this time of the outside of the Rijksmuseum.

Incidentally, Vermeer was believed to have had a fascination for cartography because maps are visible in at least six of his thirty-four surviving paintings despite the technical challenges including them would have presented. Those painted maps have also been identified (based on extant museum copies) as accurate depictions of real maps circulating during the 1600s. Given Carmen’s own fondness for travel and geography, I would wonder if the CS writers had more than just ‘Old Master with a convenient number of paintings’ in mind when they were picking potential targets for an art-themed caper.

Taking the hat away also reveals a photo of the Ecuadorian 8 escudos doubloon from S1E04, as well as one of the ship in which Carmen originally found the coin.

And finally, there is a diamond certification report (plus glamour shot) of a gem that looks suspiciously like the one Carmen ends up holding later in the title sequence.

The rest of the clutter is either too out-of-focus/obscured or too nonspecific to draw any clear connections, except for one last photo:

That is near-unmistakably Michelangelo's David, but to the best of my memory, the 2019 show never visits Florence (where David is located) or makes any particular mention of the statue. Even in the 90s cartoon, I don’t think either ever played any special kind of role. Which (if the photo's more than a throw-it-in, and I really hope it is) raises a very interesting possibility: that it does have significance, just like the other photos, but in a subtler and more allegorical sense.

Because in pitting herself against the Goliath of V.I.L.E., hasn’t Carmen chosen a path of becoming a giant-slayer too?

50 Days of HypnoKink - Day 49: Hypno in Media

My heavens... we made it to the finish line. Tomorrow is the final day.

I wanted to save an obvious one for the end because I do so enjoy MC in fiction so very much. So much, in fact, that I made a Twitter thread with 110 recommendations and never even came close to emptying my resources.

I know so many of these scenes, both that Twitter thread and this page are skimming the surface.

I'll be using some of those recommendations here but let's divide by category:

Film

So let's get the obvious out of the way. You have

Trance

A Danny Boyle thriller with a terrible plot and Rosario Dawson as a hypnotherapist trying to get hidden information from James McAvoy's mind. Silly movie but one that doesn't get brought up a lot. Dawson learned hypnosis to get into the role.

Candyman

Horror movie in which the director literally hypnotized the actress so any time she was being stalked by the titular killer she looked completely entranced. Link above is an interview discussing this.

Hypnotic

HORRIBLE movie on Netflix but Sleepyhead and I have hosted a number of watch parties and let me tell you, this is the PERFECT movie to watch with a bunch of rowdy hypnokinksters. The therapist is unethical to a laughable degree and his office looks like it's inside of the Death Star. He's a living breathing red flag. The movie does have a really hot freeze scene, a good ragdoll and the dollification sequence. It's just enjoyable because it's terrible. Check CWs first though, this movie has a bunch of things that can make it an uncomfortable viewing experience.

The Great Hypnotist

This is a Not For Daja movie. A Chinese movie that doesn't get brought up a lot. Like Trance above it is a thriller with some twists and turns that I don't really want to spoil.

Stir of Echoes

A visualization of a dissociation induction designed to make a person view events on a screen so they are separate from the memory. It's a remarkably well done scene.

Now You See Me 1/2

The hypnosis in these movies is STUPID and I love it. The first movie has a punchline that every time Mark Rufallo's character makes a frustrated comment people who Woody Harrelson has hypnotized will start acting as if they're in an orchestra. Second movie has a twin Woody Harrelson as an evil hypnotist and he uses a pizza box as an evil induction. It's amazing.

Sherlock Holmes Woman in Green

This induction is one of the coolest I've seen in a film and I try my hardest to channel the energy of this when I am doing a relaxation focused scene.

TV

Charlies Angels

This is bar none my favorite hypnosis scene in any fiction. The typewriter induction is amazing, the hypnotist has such a smooth voice, the entranced gazes are lovely. It's just perfect. Heck, the link above is "hypnosis scenes" from the episode and is 26 minutes long. From a single episode of television.

Doctor Who

Sarah Jane gets hypnotized so often that I could make a list purely from her.

Legion

I just wanna link this one as it's one of those scenes that works so much better without context and the aesthetics are incredible. Plus who doesn't like Aubrey Plaza?

Nyx Gaming (Featured game: Enthralled)

Nyx do incredible games which are designed to hypnotize the viewer and their consent practices are wonderful. They recently teamed up with Secret Subject to release a vampire enthrallment game and let me tell you, there is not a single word in that synopsis that doesn't make me happy.

Mind Melting Massaging Machine

The best tool for VR hypnosis. Upload custom files and program spirals, subliminals and chose between static spiral or headtracking. I have had so much fun with this over the years. There's a desktop version too but VR is optimal for this experience.

Spiral Clicker

It's such a simple concept. Click on the character and watch their will go away. Spiral Clicker is backed with a fun little universe, fun characters both original and community sourced, amazing art and a clever little gameplay loop that is quite addictive. Careful, the game features a constant spiral, you may find yourself falling in to trance. Don't worry. The game will wake you up. You can even ask the game to include suggestions for you :)

Airing out my LMK trailer/S5 thoughts cause u gotta do this somehow

Most glaring, animation. It’s not bad, by any means. I’d certainly be proud of myself if I were able to come up with it.

However, I think it’s important to consider the context of the show’s style, and how it’s been improving significantly over instalments. Also, it’s Flying Bark. Flying Bark is just gonna make banger animation.

Am I a bit disappointed when comparing it to Emperor’s Wrath? Yeah. Especially when we’ve been waiting a full year for this—twice as long as usual.

But I’m not saying I won’t be watching the show because of it. I still love this story. Fuck, my favourite series is Epithet Erased. The show that’s best described as JPEGs wiggling around your screen for 2 hours. I can handle less than expected animation if it’s made up for by good writing.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people attacking invisible fans that claim they’re going to boycott the show because of this. Respectfully, source? The most aggressive criticism I’ve seen is “man that’s disappointing ig, still excited tho”. Who are you guys even fighting lmao. (Unless this is something happening on other platforms and you’re just venting on here which, valid)

Nevertheless, as I’ve said before, it’s not bad animation, just not up to the standard we’re used to. People are allowed to be disappointed. Let them be. This show isn’t flawless.

It’s looking to be real, all things considered. We’ve never gotten a fan leak this elaborate before, and it contains a lot of elements that were just recently revealed. Unless they’ve been getting announcements much earlier than we have (considering this fanbase’s sleuth skills, I’d doubt it) then there’s no other explanation other than it being official.

Official, however, doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to look that way the whole time. The animation is being done by another studio, yes, but only partially. Flying Bark is still here for the fun. This other studio also isn’t incompetent, they’re behind things like Carmen Sandiego. They know what they’re doing.

They’re also primarily handling additional material, means promotions, meaning trailers. Listen, it’s a bit of a stretch considering the fact that all trailers so far have been taken directly from the show, but also it’s industry standard to make a trailer before you’re even done, meaning you gotta cut some corners for the scenes you’re showing until you polish them up in post.

We know LEGO has a habit of keeping LMK things in their vault until they need to, this may be something they had lying around from early prod and released to maintain hype.

Any which way, this development is very much temporary, only applying because the team is currently working on a movie and need to momentarily lessen their workload. Even if the odds are against us and S5 looks like a PowerPoint presentation, it’ll likely go back to normal later.

Biiig animation rant aside, I am a tad bit sad about the direction the story is going in (namely the abandonment of Red Son) and the fan service is a bit much, but honestly what else are we expecting from JTTW fanfic.

I’m stoked to see more Macaque though—he’s looking to be becoming a proper protagonist, which is great for angst! Yippee!

One thing I haven’t seen anyone talk about is the complete lack of Nüwa. You know, the character they’ve been teasing this whole time? Where is she? Not in the trailer. Not in the posters.

Makes me wondering if this is a part of the new season, teasing the next one, the one Nüwa’s in, later.

Would I ever want Carbela to be canon?

Disney owns the rights to Carmen Sandiego, Gina Rodriguez has starred in Disney property before- but would I want Carbela to be canon?

No, I don't think so.

Even if they managed to get Gina as a voice actor for another character who interacts with Bela- it wouldn't be Carbela and thus undermine my 2-ish years of being insane about them. Additionally, the very idea of them being shipped by a large variety of people would stress me out.

What if they mischaracterise Carbela's relationship? Put them into situations or contexts that I don't think they'd find themselves in. It would turn into one big "but she wouldn't say that!".

As much as part of me would love for more people to enjoy Carbela, I really take pride in the solemn solitude of carrying this incredibly rare rarepair in the palms of my hands. It feels more intimate and meaningful, they mean so much to me. (They mean so much to me that I don't think I could ever find the words to express how much they really do)

They are more than just a ship to me, so I don't want to see them become what I'd call "the fast-food" or "temu" ship of a fandom- where things are mass-produced and consumed at an outrageous rate.

Sure, I sometimes wish I could check the Isabela Madrigal/Carmen Sandiego tag and see something written by someone else for me to sit back and read- but Carbela is so personal, so unique to me that I think that sometimes Carbela would be just fine with me as the soul content producer for them. Besides, they're canon to me and that's all that matters.

All that I need now is infinite time to sit down and write and draw things for them.

(Then again if Carbela was canon it would be the craziest thing to ever happen to me and I would never shut the fuck up)
