For sure that wedding opened her eyes--literally 😂. Jokes aside, she now KNOWS. She knows his affection is real and he's willing to make an effort for her. The man's pretty gross and scary on several levels. But he's sweet too and keeps his word. She's dated worse, like, Rory lol. I'm sure she would have kept her word and completed the wedding, if nothing got in the way and Astrid and Delia weren't there. Maybe! (Ok maybe that last part is brought to you by my shipper goggles, but 👀 If the wedding wasn't interrupted, what would have happened? Maybe they'd have at least talked or something. I kept wishing for a slow scene where they just talked lol).

Lydia's Guilt

Hi hello so I made a post a little while back talking about how the ending to the wedding scene is Lydia's manifestation of her guilt and her coming to terms with what she's lost.

This is all my opinion and my wild theories so! LETS GO

Firstly, lets talk about the wedding scene. Coming into it Lydia says "Rory loves me, that's gotta be enough" Lydia doesn't truly love Rory, just like Rory doesn't love her - Rory is using her and Lydia is allowing it to happen because she is being manipulated and she feels like she isn't going to get anyone in her life who truly understands her so it has to be enough she knows it won't ever be what she is looking for in life but she's given up at this point on finding her own happiness and resigned for "just enough"

Secondly, Rory has no respect for Lydia. It's shown extremely clearly in this scene as he breaks his promise to her about a "small" wedding, he has no respect for her wishes, just her fame. He wants her fame, he wants the attention she gets.

Thirdly, and here's where my beetlebabes heart SOARS. Lydia knows that Beej won't hurt her. There are so many subtle hints towards this, after Rory admits the truth - her first instinct is to move CLOSER to Beej, he is a safety net that she finds herself drawn to. He showed her the truth because he wanted her to make her own choices.

He knows what she needs in the moment & He respects her. Lydia is used to having her own emotions brushed off by Rory, she's used to being ignored and to tuck it all away for the show - Betelgeuse allows her to feel. Instead of invalidating her anger, her gives her an outlet for it in his own way, something that works for them both, he gets to have fun - she gets to let her anger out.

To add to this: he respects her. He banishes everyone in the church, whether he knew that Lydia would want something small or not, he still manages to get her the quiet wedding she was talking about. They just understand each other in a way Lydia's never had before.

HE IS IN LOVE WITH HER. every time he looks at her it's with adoration and love. He loves her. and this is something that HE didn't expect, he didn't expect to fall in love with Lydia but he did and now he knows he can't let that go. He continues to wait and wait and wait for her, he never pushes himself onto her - he just waits for her and that's enough for him. He will wait for centuries for her and he knows this.

Which brings me on to my next point of...

Lydia realises he truly loves her during this scene. All the times before, she had assumed that it was all for show, just like her relationship with Rory - she assumes that no one could ACTUALLY love her but during this scene is when she realises. She realises he truly does actually love her but that she won't be able to have this, she knows that Delia and Astrid will not understand, she knows that by the end she will have to banish him. She argues with her own thoughts because in front of her in a man willing to give her the life she wants and she isn't allowed it.

Beej has a similar realisation. He isn't stupid, he knew bringing Lydia into the afterlife was a violation - you can't prove me wrong that he didn't know. HE DID. he did it because he knew Lydia wouldn't understand that he just wanted to help her with no strings attached, this was his way of doing it. But he did also want to marry Lydia because he does love her. His realisation was that he lost her again, that it was over and he was going to be alone again.

WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY FINAL POINT

Lydia feels guilty for banishing him. THIS expression stuck with me throughout all my rewatches of this film. She looks resigned, she knew it had to be this way. She knew she had to banish him even if she'd realised that he loved her for HER in a way no one else has before.

She holds this expression for a few seconds, its not a fleeting moment. She truly is resigned. She only smiles again once Delia touches her and brings her back to the present.

SHE STILL DREAMS OF HIM. We don't know how long this scene is after the wedding scene but she still thinks of him, she still feels guilty. The guilt clearly keeps her up at night and MAYBE she misses him, realising that no one else will understand why she thinks of him still. No one will understand, just like no one would've understood if she hadn't banished him.

ANYWAY thats my long ass post, I've wanted to analyse the small emotions in these scenes for so long, and as said above - its all my thoughts! I'm a silly shipper so maybe I'm looking too into it I just love them

It occured to me that Astrid's demonic birthing scene, while rife with symbolism and references, doubles as a political statement to the question of whether or not it's okay to sexualize fictional characters. Whether or not Lydia is allowed to age has been and still is a huge point of contention among fans. We have new babes coming in every day trying to lay down rules for shipping beetlebabes, adamant that underage content is. Idk. Distasteful? Idk how these babes think, I've been here for too long and I have good taste.

Anyway, in one fell swoop Tim obliterated the absurd idea that Astrid isn't allowed to age or fuck or give birth. And I think that was really cool.

We’ll see how long this lasts, but the sequel came out and I am in my Beetlejuice era! Again. This is a side blog (not sure how my followers on main feel about Beetlejuice). Likes and follows come from @shesasurvivor

The original movie has always been one of my favorites, and had a huge impact on me as a kid (even went as Lydia for Halloween once). The new movie has me in my feelings, and pushed me over into shipping Beetlejuice and Lydia (again? I might have shipped them when I was younger? I sadly can’t remember lol). My favorite iteration of their ship is in the sequel, because it resonates for personal reasons. But all Beetlebabes shippers welcome here!

Lastly, I’m slowly making my way through the animated series for the first time. I wasn’t allowed to watch it when it was on its first run and I was a very young kid, and by the time I was old enough to see the movie, it wasn’t easy to find. Loving it so far!

I dislike and disagree with Viv in a lot of things, but I gotta agree with her when she says everyone is allowed to cope however they want and you don't get a say about the right way someone should cope, specially when it's in fiction. You are allowed to draw whatever u want. You are causing no harm to real people for drawing characters being raped. People can choose to interact or not with your content. Basically, if it triggers you, you have all the right to block and leave. No one is stopping you.

I think a lot of the defenses Viv makes for herself, and that other people make for her, are true in fandom spaces specifically. If a fan draws Angel being assaulted that's one thing, especially if it's tagged appropriately, but the situation with Angel has become something completely different.

Like, assume I wrote a really raunchy Beetlebabes fic where Lydia was 17. I haven't, and wouldn't, but assume for a second I did, and people thought it was disgusting or my right to do so as a survivor or just my general right to do so as a fan. Whatever camp you fall into.

Then, assume for a second they rebooted the Beetlejuice cartoon and for some ungodly reason, I got the job of showrunner. Complete studio backing, more money to do this than most people see in a lifetime. Then, assume I took every single opportunity to slip in references to my fic, even quoting it directly. All the while, I'm openly gushing over this ship with my friends on Twitter and throwing shade at people who criticized me for this, including survivors and actual minors.

That's a very, very different conversation then whether it's acceptable to slap up a fic on AO3.

Same, I don't like big time skips (which is why I said a "little time skip", but here I would like a few months time skip so that we can start with a Betelgeuse x Lydia dynamic going on. Six months to eight months, tops. My ideal would be six months or less lol. I think that'd be cool (but nothing like a year or something crazy like two years or more 😅 that would be WAY too much...)

All the Small Things...

One of the biggest benefits of Beetlejuice 3 starting with a time skip, if they decide to do it, is that they don't need to spend much time building a dynamic between Lydia and Betelgeuse, if they intent to give them their romantic endgame.

We already saw how they get along in BJBJ and how he continues haunting her at the end, so the base is set. If they do a little time skip, the movie can start with the two of them already having a more established kind of relationship from which the story can take off. They can build their endgame romantic relationship in a believable way, without even needing to have Keaton onscreen more than the amount of time he feels like Betelgeuse should be onscreen (we all know how he believes Betelgeuse can't be in the movie too much <-Totally disagree with him, though! At least for a BJ3 I really feel like he should be onscreen a lot more than 17 minutes).

Lydia and Betelgeuse could have developed a friendship offscreen (or a reluctant friendship, on Lydia's part). OR, better yet, they may totally be acting like an old married couple. They can be shown bickering about little things that only matter when two people care about each other a lot. (I just thought of that clip with a couple arguing because she was shoveling the snow and he didn't want her to do it because that's his job as the husband [I think he even said she was too cute to be doing that 😂]. I wish I could find the clip to put it here. lol)

Little head canon time 💜: Imagine if Betelgeuse acts like her husband whenever he pops up to haunt see her. He makes her coffee every morning; some days he even sets the table for her breakfast, and very night he arranges her slippers by the bed. Lydia acts annoyed, especially at first, "stop trying to see me!" "Just leave me alone, already!" But she secretly loves all the little things he does for her and has gotten used to it. And he does it all because he wants to; he did say he was going to make her happy. The wedding might have not gone through, but, does that matter to him? Nope! He can finally make contact; it's no longer such a long distance relationship anymore. He's gonna make the most of those little moments he can have with her.

And maybe it even takes a lot out of him; he has to focus really hard to appear around her without being summoned, but he doesn't care. He just wants to be there. Maybe he leaves her roses on her bed sometimes, and gets her bath ready for when she comes home from work. It's like someone's taking care of her at all times, but at the same time... He's not truly there. He can only pop in every now and then; he can't be there permanently unless she sets him free. So, when there's a morning Beej can't pop in and make her coffee, Lydia misses him and wonders why he didn't show up today. She has a phantom husband, always there, but also, not truly... Only in his absence does she realize what he's become to her. And that's how she's slowly fallen for him, because of All the Small Things.

I'm so in love with Beetlebabes at the moment, that I added a couple that reference them in one of my 5 volume stories. Basically, I added to my heroine (who is a witch) a medium aunt who is generally excluded from the family, and who is married to a redeemed demon. They appear in volume 2, 4 and 5. Basically, there are 3 types of demon in my universe. And obviously, there can be good ones, as well as bad ones. But so, there are those naturally connected to nature and therefore of a rather positive order, although they can be ambiguous morally speaking. Then there are those of a negative nature, which are in fact connected to hell. They literally come from there. And then there are those who evolved into demons after their death and therefore became ghosts. The aunt's demon husband is part of the 3rd category, and he therefore officially converted himself to the protection of nature and more particularly trees after meeting his dear one. I would like to point out that as a result, demons of the 3rd category can only be perceived and seen by mediums or witches. While other demons of other categories can be seen by anyone as long as they allow it themselves. They are naturally visible, unlike the demons of the 3rd category, but can therefore camouflage themselves if the desire takes them.

anyway movie whatever musical whatever sequel whatever. animated beetlebabes did me best by understanding a particular unbidden fantasy some little girls have about an older man seeing the dreaming girl for who she is and liking her just the way she is and loving her in the way she wants to be loved. in a way that makes her feel loved. and he makes her laugh, and perhaps even waits for her. she is, to him, his best friend--he treats her as his equal (and in the case of Beetlejuice, we see him give up self-centered pursuits MANY TIMES! to be with Lydia and have fun with Lydia)--and in this fantasy he does not hurt her. he waits for her and is good to her, perhaps only to her if she knows him to be otherwise bad.

I see the art and I see the pure wishful thinking, the first red-rose romance the girl ever dreams of. I know the course of reality; the inevitable thorn’s sting. when the rose must be cut and the girl lose the scent of the flower, the softness of the petals, their dynamic bloom--and can only experience the fantasy through a lens that is merely rose-tinted, through which she can only see, not feel. having such art reflecting the fantasy, though, allows the little girl to know that rose again at a safe distance; making her own art, then (as she is encouraged to by seeing the art she has seen, the beautiful effect all art has) allows her to understand this dream of hers, and love the love she felt, safely. I know that little girl and I love her. Think about it from her perspective. Lydia was her breakout role. She was some teenage nobody on set with fucking Batman, and on top of the sheer stardom I'm sure MK was cool as fuck to her and in general a lovely person and costar. She obviously ships it, how could she not?

People freak out about beetlebabes bc it's one of the scary age gap ships. Misogynists think women and girls are too stupid to discern the difference between fiction and reality, and that we shouldn't be allowed to enjoy fictional relationships of this nature or else our dumb little girl brains will make us want to emulate it.

That's literally the argument.

This is the TL;DR of what my original post was trying to say, but I understandably shook a few fellow beetlebabes in the process.

If you like it great! If you don't, okay! Totally valid to hate the musical because of the fandom uglies alone. I. Get. That. And it's fine for someone to vocalize their opinions on the matter, but not to the point of turning into an immature disappointment that thrives off the suffering of others - that is something that antis do.

I also hope we are all on the same page with non-shippers and antis being two VERY different groups. Non-shippers are also just living their lives just like us beetlebabes are. This is something that seasoned lovers of any franchise know and understand very well.

I just wanna stay cordial with all kinds of fans of the BJ universes, no matter what they ship or don't ship, and no matter what beetlejuice universe you like. I like it all because I like Beetlejuice. It's fun. It's silly. It doesn't take itself too seriosuly (at least its not supposed to), and it's a good reminder to not take myself too seriously too, even if I do still cry watching it sometimes.

I really hope that all creators that were a part of any Beetlejuice universe can look back at their creations and say "Holy hell I had a lot of fun doing that and the fans were amazing." - that is the kind of experience I want for this (and every) fandom.

Beetlejuice doesn't have to be that serious, and other's words only have the power that you give them. Burton is his own can of worms. Talk about a nuanced person. I love the movies he's made, and I LOVE BJ2, but he isn't my favorite person in the world. The idea that the musical was made out of spite, and then hearing that the movie was perhaps a spiteful response is a little OOC for me because the Betelgeuse universe I am a part of doesn't give a rats ass about anyone's opinion of him. He's too busy loving himself lol.

I wanna go back to what I said earlier about what's considered Beetlejuice fanfiction. The cartoon, the musical, and both movies, they were all written by different teams of people, and it is my understanding that writers are the creators of worlds, buuuuuuut....... Beetlejuice is a unique little monster because he is a multiverse within himself.

As I continue to argue with myself, I say that Beetlejuice was mostly created by Michael Keaton. Although Keaton didn't even want to do it until he heard Burton's ideas- and Burton was recruited by the original writers Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren, Keaton ended up having complete freedom to do whatever the hell he wanted, and brilliance ensued. It was his creation and personality that inspired so much to come out after the movie. Everyone goes based on Michael Keaton's character creation. Alex Brightman even begged for Michael Keaton to see the musical, right?

I would say that Keaton is the head creative force behind Beetlejuice as a character, and out of anyone who is part of these universes, Keaton is the most qualified to speak on the subject. It is HIS character. But it is his character in a miltiverse that was created, loved, hated, and passionately moved by soooooooo many others.

With that being said, people are still allowed to disagree with Michael Keaton, just like people are allowed to disagree with Tim Burton, and the musical, and Alex Brightman's opinions.

Hell I disagree with the idea that the intentions of the musical was made out of beetlebabe spite, but I am still going to go in there and watch the musical and STILL ship it because thats what fandoms are all about. And I think its FUNNIER that way lol. The musical side can say "fuck you" to me and the other beetlebabes all they want. They can't stop me from enjoying it and shipping them anyway.

I feel like a Veronica in a room filled with a bunch of Heathers from all the BJ universes. I feel like the chick in Mean Girls that's crying, saying that she wants everyone to be happy, only for someone in the back to yell "she doesn't even go here" lmaoooo. I'm 30 and have been a fan of all Beetlejuice content since I was about 7.

Glad we can all mostly appreciate the cartoon tho..... right?

Am I the only person in the Beetlejuice fandom that LIKES the movies, the musical, AND show and don't care that they're different? Can we not appreciate different versions of the same thing? I honestly don't get it. It is possible to appreciate all versions of the Beetlejuice universe. I promise.

The 2nd movie isn't negating the musical or the show because the movies are their own cannon, just like the musical is its own cannon, and so is the cartoon. Do the universes make jabs at each other sometimes? Of course they do. It's Beetlejuice for God's sake. It's meta as fuck which is why it cracks me up that some of y'all take this so seriously. Especially the ship wars. Jeezus. 😒 it's not that serious guys.

The 2nd movie doesn't take anything away from the show or the cartoon because they are all different universes.

And that's OKAY!

It's all fanfiction after the 1st movie anyway so why are y'all so mad? Is it because things aren't going your way? Is it because the creators wrote the fanfiction wrong to you?

The cartoon show was created AFTER the movie... so it's literally episodic fanfiction. Good fanfiction. I watched it. Love it.

The musical was created AFTER the movie AND the show..... Fanfiction. I get to see it live for the first time in November and I am SO excited. I already know how the story differs and I'm fine with it being different. I LIKE that they're being creative.

The 2nd movie is literally a FANFICTION. I swear to God they scoured ao3 and said bet. It's fucking ridiculous. Yeah I fucking LOVED how stupid it was. How can anyone take any of these universes seriously?!?!

None of it would have existed without THE ORIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL. Thank you Keatlejuice. 💚

It's all fanfiction. These creators just got to make money off their bullshit, and I think some of y'all are just mad that others fanfictions got the green light and yours didn't.
