Your favorite fanfic writer doesn't know (but would like to)

Let's talk about comments on fanfics. This is not meant as a guide or call to action, just a bit of observations. Personally, I always saw it as impolite to ask for reviews or kudos or comments or likes or reblogs or whatever. That's not a rational point of view, it just reflects how I am. And people actually telling others that they have to leave any of this feedback? I've blocked folks over that. In my mind that's not okay. I'm not announcing a change of that, this is not a policy, just some deep-seated mental issues, but I want to write down some more things that have been going through my mind, from the perspective of someone who occasionally writes fanfics. My previous suggestion in this regard was mostly to write some fanfic yourself and see what happens and what you'd like to happen, because it's genuinely fun and I think you probably have more to say than you realise.

But there's also another point here, and that is that your favourite fanfic writer has no idea that they are. If you're anything like me, then it will seem like the great writers in your fandom are obvious. Also, the last time you bought Blåhajs, it ended with you having to flee a smoke-filled subway tunnel. The great stories and great writers in your universe are facts of nature. You read a story and you think, "this is the greatest thing I've ever seen." A story rewires your brain chemistry forever. You keep coming back and reading that one fic whenever the mood hits you. It feels obvious that this story is great. How could it not be?

It feels trite to say that the author of that fic doesn't know that unless you tell them, but it's hard to really understand the feeling unless you've been there yourself. You write a story, but is it any good? Maybe you get a lot of kudos, or maybe very little, but what does either of that mean? Kudos can mean literally anything from "loved this" to "didn't close the tab in disgust". Maybe you just got unlucky. Maybe you just got lucky. What do these numbers mean? What is a good number of kudos? 1? 10? 100? 1000? Should I calculate ratios? How do I know whether people like this?

In light of this, a comment where someone just said, "I loved this", has an almost incalculable worth. A comment where someone says they read this over and over again, or quotes lines they loved, or something? You can't imagine how valuable that is. A while ago someone told me "a couple of us are talking about this on Discord, we love it and we keep repeating our favorite lines". I thanked them, but I was too polite to say, "really? What are they saying? Which are your favorite lines? How many people are there who love it? What are their names? Which lines are the favorite ones, please, tell me!". Part of me still regrets that, because I so desperately want to know! I don't think it was a public Discord and I never heard from the others on it, but just the idea that they're out there and they like my story was so powerful. (By the way, it's not on any account that's linked from here, please don't try to find that comment.)

Now, I firmly believe that you, as a reader, don't have to care about any of that. I know there are people who disagree with me on this point, very strongly in fact, but I don't think it's necessarily your job to care. It's great if you do, and I think a lot of you do in fact care, that's why I'm writing this. But if you haven't thought about that or don't feel comfortable leaving comments or whatever, that's fine, that's normal, and you are in fact part of the majority. Any well-adjusted fic author has found ways to deal with this. They have learned to love writing for its own sake, or they love re-reading their own fics, or they have a couple of trusted friends who like their work, or ideally all three. Personally I was scared of Discord for the longest time, but it really helps with that. One person who you sort of know going "hey that's neat" can outweigh just about anything else. (Still, there will be days when you post something and you won't get a response and that just plain sucks, no two ways about it.)

But if you do care, if you think it's important that a fanfic writer knows what they mean to you, not because of any concern about the wider unpaid fan creator economy but just because of the way their work affected you, then this is important. Your favorite fanfic writer probably doesn't know and/or believe that they're anyone's favorite, and even if they do, a reminder or learning that someone knew found them will make them incredibly happy. And obviously, all of that applies at least just as much to all the beginners with potential that are out there. So if you're wondering whether it's worth it leaving a comment that says how much you enjoyed something: It probably is. And if you shared this with others and they loved it, or if this is your favourite fic, or if you enjoy how original it is, or how well it does your favourite tropes, or anything like that, the writer is going to be so happy to hear that.

A final aside: This obviously applies even more when it's about fandoms, pairings, subject matter and in particular ratings that are considered a bit embarrassing. Writers who write stuff that, say, happens to be E-rated for whatever reason, doesn't matter, will probably get fewer kudos and comments just because people are embarrassed to have their names show up in the Kudos and Comment sections. If that's you, just a note that it is perfectly okay to comment anonymously, or to create a second separate account for leaving kudos on, commenting on and maybe even posting the somewhat more risqué stuff. Now I'm not saying I have one of these second accounts, at least I'm not saying that in public, but it is an option worth considering.

Omega Kate truther here so I apologize if that isn't what you were looking for exactly but it's like biblical scripture to me. Have to say, never thought I'd be on Tumblr talking about Kate Laswell's ideal nest but it's pretty solid to do. Anway:

Kate's ideal nest is very specific and she does not appreciate comments of any kind about it and no shifting things under the guise of helping. It is her nest and she will set it up as she pleases. She likes a nest that's packed and cozy, to other omegas it might be claustrophobic but it works for her.

She has pillows stacked up around the top of it to stop her from hurting her neck, a decision made from experience, but she also has a small wall of very specific pillows to the right side so she can lie with them pressed to her back. She won't rest in the middle of her nest, she likes to lie at the side so she can ensure there's always room for her wife.

She needs a certain pillow behind her head, it's stupidly flat and shaped like a sunflower. She's owned it for years and if she pretends, she can imagine there's still a faint smell of both of her parents attached to it.

There are four specific blankets that she needs and the rest of them are optional to what she has. The four blankets:

A forest green blanket that John once bought her years ago, long before she had ever met Sarah because she complained that the hotel that'd been set up in for a fancy [read: mandatory] event had put her in a room that was positively freezing. Any time John visited he'd temporarily thieve the blanket back so his scent always lingers on it and Kate would admit after various hours of torture that having the scent of one of her closest friends so close is in fact very comforting.

A blanket that is actually Sarah's, it's light blue with white cartoon cats printed over and it's ugly. If Kate doesn't have it in her nest then she will actually die, that's factual, she'll swear that her doctor told her. Sarah has given up trying to steal it back, when Kate wants to get it back them she'll give it back.

A Halloween blanket that has no sentimentality to Kate but she needs it to tuck over some of the pillows that have a scratchier material. No, she can't use any other blanket and asking her to will result in a very pissed off omega.

The last one is a child's blanket, Kate originally bought it to give to a pregnant coworker but never got around to it and on one occasion she'd been a blanket less than usual. She would not settle without the same number of blankets despite Sarah's attempts to convince her and in a fit of frustration Sarah threw the baby blanket into the nest. It stuck. They don't talk about it outside of nesting but it's something for Kate to run her hands over and if she's comfortable enough, she'll purr so Sarah has no intention of mentioning it and making her wife uncomfortable or embarrassed.

A single stuffed animal makes it into the nest, unless of of the cats drops one of their catnip mice in it again, and that is a blåhaj. It was originally Mini Kate's [Sarah's niece] but the little girl had left it at their house one day. When Kate had tried to return it the little one had refused, claiming that she noticed the women's lack of stuffies so they could keep hers. It warms Kate's heart and they keep it on their bed so it very quickly finds a spot in the nest when she is making it the next time after the shark incident. It reminds her of her favourite niece. Yes, it's the niece named after her. She's biased, sue her.

There are a few clothing items that often make their way into her nest but only one of them is a necessity. Sarah's Jurassic Park shirt that she sleeps in most of the time. It rests over whatever pillow Kate's head is lying on in her nest and it stays there. It smells completely of Sarah, the material is soft and worn, and Kate adores it.

Today I had to last minute throw all my plans out of the window. I woke up at 4.40 to got to uni, bit then after breakfast I felt very sick so I cancelled all my plans. I had a friend date planned, and I felt very bad cancelling it but I was to scared of either feeling sick on the bus or risking a panic attack, and I am happy I decided to listen to my body. The day was slow, but thankfully feel a bit better now, and drfinitely calmer. In the afternoon I managed to spend quite some time reading which gave me a lot of feelings but was really good, and it felt very healing. And my friend was happy to reschedule next week, so I am looking forward to that. Another small joy was given by my brother who gave me two of his sweaters he wanted to get rid of and I am very happy!

I do a lot of things, and I kind of have a habit of rotating between hobbies. I do engineering stuff (surprising no one), music, draw, and I used to play video games but my poor daughter is not doing to good. (I'm getting closer to being able to save her though!) I also used to really like Pokémon, but I've kinda fallen out of love recently.

As for fandoms, I love RWBY and Murder Drones, but also I like Dungeon Meshi, TADC, HTTYD, Dragon Prince, Wings of Fire, Pokémon, and more! If you have other Fantasy/SciFi stuff to recommend I'll always take recommendations. (I'm sorry for taking so long to get into Ghost in the Shell, I'm still trying yo get the login to the account for it.)

idk how much sleep i got, but i was very tired in the morning, all i managed to do was eat and take a shower. The Horrors™️ started again (after only two weeks !!!) and i was really dysphoric about it, but luckily it was not physically painful, just mentally upsetting.

after lunch i was planning to go to the library to study before meeting @wiggles-mcgee at ikea. but i ran out of time so i ended up just going to robin's to take care of chores and be a Helpful Boyfriend™️ and then i went to ikea from there.

despite the dysphoria in the morning i ended up feeling really confident with how i looked today ??? ikea has a bunch of mirrors everywhere and i kept catching my reflection in them as i walked past and thinking wow, i look like a boy, i look like me, and it made me so so so happy :D

we had a lot of fun looking around at everything and being silly and goofy all afternoon. and also planning our future homes (of course we will be neighbours with secret tunnels between our houses)

i really want to get these bed sheets for my room because they are so incredibly binya core ??? green is my favourite colour, and all the mushrooms and creatures, they are everything :0 but they are kind of expensive, so i will have to think about it.

we also got dinner there because the food is so good ??? i had the vegan meatballs and they were delicious and i felt very powered up >:)

i couldn't decide if i wanted to buy a panda or a djungelskog bear so i got mini versions of both of them >:) i also considered getting the ankylosaurus (because that's my favourite animal) and another blåhaj as a friend for the one i got in the summer. but i decided to save my money. maybe i can get more Little Guys next time >:)

after leaving ikea we went to the students union; lucy was going to watch a movie and i needed to study. somehow i managed to finish my bioinformatics homework in like two hours or so. it was hard but i did it !!

i went home and got changed into pyjamas. i was hungry again so i ate a late night snack while watching episode 7 of percy jackson and the olympians (i didn't keep up with it as it was being released because i'm disorganised but percy jackson is my special interest and each episode of the show makes me feel All The Emotions)

then i went to bed and fell asleep. i was very exhausted after such a busy day. but it was a lot of fun and i am very happy that i went out and did things instead of moping in my room all day.

Extra: Well, shit, I'm on meds again 🥲 Bad news, my friends -- it turns out that what I thought was a very bad burnout wasn't, in fact, a burnout, but a full-blown nervous breakdown. I had an emergency visit with my family doctor this week, and I was so glad that she was so understanding about finding a solution that would work for me both physically and psychologically -- especially considering my sad and bad medical history. I am very frustrated by the fact that this episode happened right now that I am so close to finishing "Effetto Luna" (could this have been one of the triggers? 👀​) In any case, something had to be done, mostly because the meltdowns were putting a lot of strain on my heart rate and blood pressure. The heavy pain in my chest was (is!) very sharp and very suffocating, and it drains all of my energies.  Now my meds help me to go to work and (luckily!) also to write. And I'm glad and lucky to have my beloved Blåhaj by my side, as my major support -- he's on my lap right now, no joking. Anyway, I am writing all this not to vent about it, but mostly to communicate that perhaps the last two chapters could arrive a little late -- but they will come, I promise! I want to thank all my beloved readers in advance for their patience and understanding. 🙏 p.s. I also want to apologize if sometimes I "abuse" the extra space of this productivity diary of mine to speak so openly about my stuff (xD), but I have noticed that writing down events, feelings and changes​, helps me to process them, so this can also be considered a little piece of therapy. I am once again here to complain about being exhausted. My motivation is still nowhere to be seen. When I was in class today it was okay, this professor is enjoyable to listen to (though I fear my notes will be chaos because she has the terribke tendency of jumping from one subject to another), but the mental and physical effort of getting up super early and commute is really a lot now. Moreover I should be trying to recover from my burnout but I don't feel like I am. I am also struggling a bit with anxiety and feeling guilty about not studying at the moment (aside from going to lectures I haven't done anything since my last exam at the beginning of the month). I think that writing down a brain dump of my to dos will help with these feelings, so that shall be my only goal for tomorrow. To finish my complaining fest this morning I woke up with a sore throath, again. I don't know what it is with my health in the past six months or so but I am weak as fuck. I started to take supplements again, so hopefully that will help me a little bit with getting back on my feet. Since I don't want this to be solely a complaint post here are some happy things of the day: I managed to read quite a bit at the bus stop and during my commute, I worked in the afternoon so I stayed active and I got a bit of money that I want to use to get a graphic novel since I have been in the mood for one lately, cuddles with my blåhaj while listening to the books unbound podcast, which is peak relax time for me.
