Besides Tokusatsu & J-Pop idols, I'm also currently a volleyball fan & when the VNL (Volleyball Nations League) held here for 3 years in a row, i got to slowly becoming a fan of Ryujin Nippon, aka the Japanese Men's Volleyball Team.
Found these pics on TikTok (yet the users are credited in the pics because they found this all over the internet, but I'm still looking for that one pic of Ran I'm getting giddy on).

These boys, this team, this sport all have a special place in my heart. I am sad that I won’t get to see this particular team play live as two of them retired from the national team but regardless of that I will continue to support all of them no matter what. Tokyo Olympics is when I heard of them, only learnt three of the members then and it was the three I saw everywhere. Yuyuran aka Yuki Ishikawa, Yuji Nishida and Ran Takahashi.
Finally learnt the rest of the team this year and supported them through the Paris Olympics but was really sad with the end results. I know they played their best in that last match and I was still so so proud of them from putting up the fight they did against Italy.
I hope that one day I will get to see them play volleyball live and not just on a screen, if not all of them then some of them 🫶🏽

I Hear the Sunspot
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
I Hear the Sunspot (2024, Japan)
Directors: Fuga Yaegashi, Makino Masaru & Takanobu Harashima
Writer: Izumi Kawasaki (based on the manga by Yuki Fumino)
Mini-review:
I remember reading and liking this manga a million years ago, but I actually think the drama is even better. It puts the romance on the back-burner, choosing to focus on the character development. As a result, the story doesn't feel rushed at all and the characters behave in ways that feel realistic. The writer also makes an effort to showcase the difficulties deaf and hard of hearing people face in Japan, a country that's not always understanding nor welcoming towards disabilities. I'm not saying it's a perfect drama; for example, I didn't feel much chemistry between the leads, even though their performances were solid. But still, it's clear that a lot of care went into making I Hear the Sunspot.

The Haunted Ryujin Nippon Dorm
It was a quiet evening at the Ryujin Nippon dorm. After a long day of practice, the boys were ready to rest. Yuki Ishikawa, as always, was in his room, focused on his schedule for the next day, while Yuji Nishida and Ran Takahashi were playing video games in the common area. Akihiro Yamauchi and Taishi Onodera were discussing their blocking techniques, and Masahiro Sekita was chatting with Tatsunori Otsuka and Kentaro Takahashi about the latest volleyball match.
The peaceful evening, however, was about to take a turn.
Suddenly, the lights flickered. The air felt colder. Yuki furrowed his brows. "Did we forget to pay the electric bill?"
Before anyone could answer, they heard the eerie creaking of a door. It came from the hallway, and the sound echoed throughout the dorm. The guys exchanged confused glances. Yuji, the most fearless of them all, chuckled. "Who's trying to scare us? Come on, show yourself!"
No one responded.
Then, out of nowhere, a loud thud came from the bathroom. Ran, who had been bravely trash-talking Yuji during their game, jumped up, clutching the controller. "Wh-what was that?!"
"Don't tell me… this dorm is haunted?" Taishi whispered, eyes wide.
Yuki stood up, trying to maintain his composure. "Relax. There’s probably a logical explanation for this."
But things only got worse. As they all gathered in the common area, the TV turned on by itself, showing nothing but static. A chill ran down everyone's spine as they saw a shadowy figure walk past the hallway in the reflection of the TV screen.
"Okay, nope! I'm out!" Tatsu shouted, standing up, his face pale as he grabbed Kentaro by the arm.
Sekita, usually calm and collected, looked uneasy. "Maybe we should... check it out?"
"Are you crazy?!" Yuji said, shaking his head vigorously. "I’m not walking towards that thing! That’s like the number one rule of horror movies—don’t go towards the creepy noise!"
Just then, they heard the sound of a girl laughing. It was faint, but it was there. "Did you guys hear that?!" Akihiro asked, stepping back. "That was definitely a girl."
"Wait a second..." Yuki narrowed his eyes, trying to connect the dots. "No one else is supposed to be here, right?"
Ran nodded nervously. "Unless it’s a ghost."
The tension built up as everyone started to imagine the worst. Every little creak, every gust of wind, every flicker of the lights seemed to fuel their growing paranoia. Yuji, despite being one of the boldest players on the court, now stood behind Akihiro, using his height as a shield.
Suddenly, the kitchen lights turned on, and there, sitting at the counter with a cup of tea, was none other than… Mayu Ishikawa, casually sipping and scrolling through her phone.
The entire group froze.
"Mayu?! What are you doing here?!" Yuki exclaimed, his voice mixed with confusion and relief.
Mayu looked up, completely nonchalant. "Oh hey, guys. What’s up?"
"What’s up?!" Tatsu yelled, his heart still racing. "We thought this place was haunted! We heard noises, saw shadows, and there was this creepy laughter!"
Mayu’s lips curled into a mischievous grin. "Ohhh… that? Yeah, that was me."
The dorm went silent.
"What?" Sekita repeated, blinking. "You… what?"
Mayu burst into laughter. "I’ve been here for the past two days. I thought I’d have some fun while Yuki and I were both in town. So, I decided to prank you guys! The creaking door? That was me. The shadow? Also me. And the creepy laughing? Totally me. You should’ve seen your faces!"
Ran gaped at her. "Are you serious?! I thought I was about to die!"
Akihiro just stared in disbelief. "Wait, how did you even make the TV do that static thing?"
"Oh, that?" Mayu waved her hand dismissively. "I just unplugged it and plugged it back in at the right moment. Easy stuff."
Yuji, who had been hiding behind Akihiro for the better part of the night, now stepped forward, shaking his head. "You’re evil. Pure evil."
Yuki, still in shock, rubbed his temples. "I should’ve known. The one person in this world who could pull this off is you."
Mayu winked. "What can I say? Gotta keep you boys on your toes."
Tatsu sighed, collapsing onto the couch. "I can’t believe we fell for it."
"Seriously," Kentaro added, sitting next to him. "I was ready to call my mom and say goodbye!"
Taishi shook his head, trying to hold back laughter. "This is why we never let Mayu into the dorm unsupervised."
Mayu stood up, dramatically flipping her hair. "Well, now you know. But hey, you’ve all got to admit, I got you good."
The boys all exchanged looks and finally broke into laughter, the fear fading as they realized they had been played by the master prankster herself.
"Yeah, yeah, you got us," Yuji admitted, patting her on the back. "But next time, don’t expect us to go easy on you."
Mayu smirked. "Oh, I’m counting on it."
And from that day forward, the Ryujin Nippon dorm was never quite the same. Not because it was haunted, but because they never knew when Mayu Ishikawa would strike again.

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ UPDATE
08202024. hey everyone! i just wanted to thank you all for the support for the two yuki fanfics i’ve written so far. i’ve always been a yuki girl but found the number of fics lacking, and so i decided to write in something for my personal enjoyment.
there’s another yuki fic on the way. length is to be determined, but i’ve always been accustomed to one shots—so i’ve come to believe that the next fic will turn out this way. for now, i’m rereading the two works, as i’ve already noticed lapses in the grammar.
besides writing fanfiction, i also proofread—so to any ryujin nippon fanfic writers out there, if you need any form of feedback, just tag me or send me a message and i’ll be more than happy to read it. other fandoms are alright, but i’ll most likely be able to only comment on the grammar if i’m unfamiliar with the fandom.
