By: Ryan Burge
Published: Apr 29, 2024
Sometimes I write a piece and a few weeks later I completely forget that I published it. I am not going to point out any specific examples on this Substack, but rest assured there are numerous occurrences where I've Googled an answer to a question and stumbled upon an article that I wrote at some point in my career, only to have forgotten about it entirely. As one of my homiletics professors said during my undergraduate studies, "not all sermons can be home runs." The same goes for public writing, I suppose.
But there are some little threads that I have exposed in earlier work that I just can’t shake. Sometimes, this is a result of giving a talk that goes really well and drives a lively Q&A, which then gets my mind spinning with possibilities. This was certainly the case when I was at Asbury University a few weeks ago, presenting some graphs from two posts that have run on Graphs about Religion.
They both circle around this idea that I have been exploring for a while—that religion doesn’t mean what most people think it means. Increasingly, it’s not some kind of theological ascent where people come to a clear understanding of Jesus, Mohammad, nirvana, etc. I just don’t think that’s how religion works in 21st-century American life. Instead, I believe that religion has been reduced to little more than a tribal marker, much in the same way that people say they are a fan of the Yankees, or they are Irish, or graduated from Stanford. It’s a way to create an "us vs. them" dynamic.
But there’s more evidence for this theory, too. There’s an increasing number of people who say that they are evangelical, yet they go to church less than once a year. Or, there’s a growing phenomenon of non-Christian faith groups like Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists who will tell survey administrators that they too are evangelicals. As I have shown, it’s pretty easy to predict why this is happening—it’s much more prominent among Republican non-Christians than among Democrats. Religion is not about a sense of the Divine; it’s about what tribe you associate with and what kind of cable news you consume.
So, consider this another entry into that larger discourse. This time I wanted to zero in on a small subset of people that I just can’t stop thinking about. Here’s the setup:
There are a handful of religion questions on mainstream surveys. One is, “How important is religion in your life?” Responses range from "not at all important" to "very important." They are also asked, “aside from weddings and funerals, how often do you attend religious services?” with response options that go from "never" to "more than once a week." Let me just show you how the sample breaks down on these two metrics in a heatmap.
It should come as little surprise that the top left is sparse. Not a ton of people are high attenders but don’t think that religion is very important. That would be completely nonsensical. The most populated square is the bottom left—those who say that religion is not at all important and they never attend religious services—about one in five Americans fall into this box. In fact, the bottom left four boxes comprise about a third of the entire sample—that’s low attendance and low importance.
In contrast, about 7% of folks attend more than once a week and say that religion is very important. The top right four boxes equal about a quarter of the sample—those are the more religious folks.
But look at the bottom right, that’s where I wanted to focus my attention for this post. Specifically on people who meet two criteria:
They say that religion is very important.
They report their religious attendance as seldom or never.
In the sample from the last couple of years, that equals about 9% of folks. That’s not nothing. In fact, if you extrapolate that out to the adult population of the United States, that might mean 20-25 million people are high importance/low attendance.
Is there a growing trend, though? Are more and more people saying that they think religion is important, then just not showing up for a weekend service?
I’m not sure if that’s the case or not. There may be an increase in the trend line, but it’s not a huge one. Between 2008 and 2012 (let’s exclude 2009 as an outlier), I’m pretty confident in saying 7-8% met this criterion. But that figure has slowly crept up over time. Now, since 2019, the share who check both these boxes is likely in the 8-9% range. So, I think it’s fair to say that it’s a growing phenomenon, but not a rapidly growing one.
But I had to look under the hood of this one just a bit. Are there certain factors that seem to be driving this phenomenon of cultural religious people? Obviously, politics was the first thing that came to mind. So, here’s the trend line for Democrats, Independents, and Republicans between 2008 and 2022.
Okay, now I think we can see a clear shift. Among Democrats, the share who say that religion is very important but don’t go to church is stable over time. It was about 6% of them in 2008, and it’s essentially the same share today. For Independents, it’s probably a modest increase. It hovered around 7.5% for a while during Obama’s first term, then began to slowly creep up. Now, it’s probably the case that 8.5-9% fall into this camp.
But among Republicans, there’s no mistaking what is happening here. The share who are culturally religious has risen quickly. It was about 5% of all Republicans in 2008 who said that religion was very important but they attended services less than once a year. The trend line in 2022 was just about 11%. So, today, a Republican is twice as likely to be culturally religious compared to a Democrat.
I had to take a look at age, but I really had to think about how to visualize this in a way that is not deceiving. Because there’s a big problem when you combine two metrics like this: a lot more older people say that religion is very important compared to young adults. In fact, it’s 50% of those in their seventies, versus just about a quarter of college-aged young people. So, of course, more older people are going to be culturally religious, just based on that criterion.
So, I had to switch it up a little. I restricted the sample to just people who said that religion was very important, and then I calculated the share who described their religious attendance as seldom or never. This gets us closer to the actual reality.
About 15% of younger folks place a high value on religion but just don’t go to religious services, but the share begins to climb from that low point. Among 40-year-olds, it’s just slightly more than 20% who are in the seldom/never category of attendance. It really peaks among people in their fifties. Among 55-year-olds who say that religion is very important, a quarter go to church less than once a year. It does decline a bit beyond that point, but it’s still north of 20% even among folks in their seventies.
I wanted to put a little bow on this post by putting all this to a more rigorous test—a regression analysis. The dependent variable is identifying as culturally religious (religion is very important + I attend less than once a year). I threw all the basic suspects into the model—age, income, gender, race, education, and political conservatism. This model is awesome because everything is predictive in one way or another. That’s not usually the case.
There are four factors that predict a lower likelihood of being culturally religious: income, education, being white, and being male. The one with the largest coefficient is race. A white respondent is significantly less likely to be culturally religious compared to people of color. This is followed by gender and education. The least predictive is income, but it’s still statistically significant. All drive a lower likelihood of cultural Christianity.
There were two factors that make someone more likely to say that religion is very important but they don’t go to church: age and political conservatism. All things being held equal, older people are more likely to be culturally religious. The same is true for being a conservative.
I don’t why but I can’t stop conjuring an image in my mind when I was thinking through this data - this is Andy Griffith Show fans. It ran for eight seasons in the 1960s. In many ways it’s the most wholesome show you can get. No sex, no drugs, no swearing. Just good morals. Ted Koppel went to a small town in North Carolina that was Griffith’s birthplace. It’s revitalized it’s economy by becoming a haven for tourists to revisit a bygone era.
They like the clean, wholesome nature of Mayberry. They watched the show as kids. They want to go back to that earlier time. But they just can’t manage to make it to church. They want to recreate the era of Andy Griffith, but not expend the actual effort of sitting in a pew on a Sunday morning. It’s just another example of people who like the idea of religion, but not the actual religious part.

I was tagged by my new mutual and fellow Burn Notice/Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad fan @darkskywishes ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for thinking of me — sorry it took so long. I’m really glad you followed me!!!!
Rules: shuffle your “on repeat” playlist from spotify/the music service of your choice and post the first 10 tracks.
As I have mentioned in the past, I listen to mainly CDs but I have been trying to add more music to my iTunes lately and I’m thinking about getting apple music (I won’t use spotify), so it’s getting a little better. I now have some music that isn’t from 10+ years ago 😂
1. Leonard Cohen - “I’m Your Man” - I actually don’t listen to him very often which is a shame. This song in particular is fantastic.
2. Rise Against - “The Numbers” - I listen to a lot of old hardcore punk music, and I’m not a huge fan of pop punk. BUT I absolutely love Rise Against. They’re very formulaic but they have politically progressive, charged lyrics set to catchy melodies and i just adore Tim McIlrath’s voice.
3. Snoop Dogg - “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” - I also don’t listen to a lot of recent rap/hip hop but a lot from the 90s and 00s and this is a classic.
4. X-Ray Spex - “Oh Bondage Up Yours!” - Ahhh they are so amazing!!!!! Right now i only have this one song but I found a used copy of their cd and I can’t wait to get it. This is an early punk band with an incredible biracial woman singer (Poly Styrene). Such a great song ❤️
5. The Decemberists - “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye” - What a weird coincidence! So this is my fave band of all time (it’s only weird when they aren’t on my shuffle bc I usually am listening to them or Colin’s solo stuff) but this is actually a cover of a Leonard Cohen song??? What are the chances lol.
6. Electric Wizard - “Funeral Of Your Mind” - Doom metal at its finest. They are incredible live.
7. Lady Gaga - “Paparazzi” - I mean, who doesn’t love her.
8. Against Me! - “White People For Peace” - They’re a tad pop punkish I guess, with very catchy songs. Also their lead singer is trans (though this is before she transitioned)! This song shows up on my shuffle sooooo much it’s kind of weird but it’s a great song.
9. Crowded House - “Better Be Home Soon” - God this song just floors me. I love them. Very underrated.
10. Nirvana - “Blew” - Iconic band. This is from when they were still on SubPop Records. I actually only have two of their songs right now in my iTunes, this and “Breed,” both of which go hard as fuck.
I’m going to tag @yellowginghamdream @siriouslytired @littlelovingmouse @nissameta1782 @archetypewriter but please don’t feel pressured especially if I’ve tagged you too often lol. Feel free to ignore it ❤️
#i tried to think of who has done one recently or been tagged or tagged me#but it’s so hard so i just picked a few mutuals in my activity#😂😂😂#like i said feel free to ignore ❤️#tag games#tagged

Buddhist Funeral Services: An Fu Funeral Services
Losing a loved one is an inevitable and emotionally challenging part of life. In times of grief, various cultures and religions have developed unique funeral practices to honor the departed and find solace in their passing. Buddhism, with its rich traditions and spiritual beliefs, offers a profound and contemplative approach to funeral services. One such example is the An Fu Funeral Services, a sacred Buddhist ritual that brings comfort to the bereaved and honors the journey of the departed soul.
Understanding Buddhist Funeral Services
Buddhist Funeral Services are rooted in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as Buddha, who lived around 2500 years ago. Buddhism is founded on the belief in reincarnation, where individuals go through cycles of birth, death, and rebirth until they attain enlightenment (nirvana). Funerals in Buddhism are seen as crucial moments for the departed to progress to their next life and for the living to show reverence, express their grief, and gain insights into the impermanence of life.
An Fu Funeral Services is a specific form of Buddhist funeral that emphasizes the profound concept of "An," which translates to "peace" or "calm." It centers around providing a tranquil and harmonious environment for the deceased to make a smooth transition to the afterlife. The ritual is practiced in various Buddhist communities around the world, each adding its cultural elements while maintaining the core principles of reverence and mindfulness.
The Significance of An Fu Funeral Services
An Fu Funeral Services holds several fundamental tenets that guide its practices and significance:
Peaceful Passage: The primary focus of this funeral service is to create a serene and peaceful environment, both internally and externally, to ease the transition of the departed soul to their next existence. Buddhist monks and practitioners come together to chant sutras, recite mantras, and engage in meditation to promote a sense of calm and tranquility.
Karma and Merit: Buddhists believe in the law of karma, where one's actions have consequences that determine their future existences. During the funeral, attendees are encouraged to accumulate merits by performing acts of compassion, generosity, and kindness. These merits are then dedicated to the deceased, hoping they aid their journey to a favorable rebirth.
Impermanence and Detachment: An Fu Funeral Services reminds the living of the impermanence of life and the necessity to detach from worldly attachments. By understanding the transient nature of existence, Buddhists seek to find inner peace and acceptance in the face of loss.
Respect for Nature: Buddhists hold deep reverence for nature and all living beings. An Fu Funeral Services often incorporates eco-friendly practices, such as natural burials or cremation processes that minimize environmental impact.
Community and Support: The funeral service brings together the community to show support and share collective grief. The act of coming together fosters a sense of unity and helps those left behind find solace in the shared experience.
The Elements of An Fu Funeral Services
An Fu Funeral Services involve several essential elements that contribute to its spiritual significance:
Preparation: Before the funeral, the body of the deceased is traditionally bathed and dressed in simple white clothing to symbolize purity and simplicity.
Altar and Offerings: An altar is set up with images of Buddha, candles, flowers, and incense. Offerings of fruits, sweets, and other items are made as a gesture of respect and gratitude.
Chanting and Prayers: Monks or experienced practitioners chant sutras and recite prayers to invoke blessings for the deceased and guide their soul towards a favorable rebirth.
Eulogies and Reflections: Family members and friends may share eulogies or personal reflections about the deceased, celebrating their life and expressing their feelings.
Ceremonial Acts: Ceremonial acts, such as the lighting of candles and symbolic water pouring, carry significant meaning and are performed with mindfulness.
Reception of Ashes or Burial: In some cases, the ashes of the deceased are enshrined in a stupa or interred in a burial ground with proper rituals.
Conclusion
An Fu Funeral Services exemplify the profound spiritual essence of Buddhist funeral practices. Rooted in the teachings of compassion, impermanence, and karma, these ceremonies offer a way to cope with loss, find inner peace, and pay respects to the departed soul. By embracing the philosophy of "An" – peace and calm – Buddhists emphasize the importance of mindfulness, detachment, and respect for nature.
In the face of loss, An Fu Funeral Services provide a meaningful way for individuals to connect with their spiritual beliefs, strengthen community bonds, and bid farewell to their loved ones with a sense of serenity and hope for their continued journey in the cycle of life.

I will not show up to my dads funeral wearing The Bitch Is Back t-shirt. I will not. I will also not buy a Succession t-shirt to wear either. I will mourn “respectfully” while secretly singing Lake of Fire by Nirvana in my head during the funeral service. I’M FINE.

Ymir x gn!Reader Headcanons
(Little things she’d do that makes you love her even more <33)
-She has always been a huge fan of the drums. Ever since she saw them in Marcels memories in Marley, she’d act them out with two pens and a dresser, tapping her foot trying to make a beat. Sometimes when you weren’t looking she’d take the metal buckets used to give water to the cows and would slam her pen against it, trying to make a beat. One day you caught her and her face became a bright red, a flutter in her stomach as she kicked over the buckets on her desk screaming a “I-I’M NOT DOING ANYTHING! LEAVE!”
- Ymir’s honestly got the sound for music, and in modern!Au I see her being a rapper or in a band.
- I see Ymir being a Light academia/ grudge girl living her best life in NYC. She’s the type to go out to bars late at night, staying there until about 5AM and coming home wasted as you’d scold her for worrying you. “Y/n I am not drunk~” she’d say with her speech a bit slurred. “You’ve been out since eight! You worried me sick! I already know you are so stop your hiding!”
- Mmm a fan of nirvana and the beatles. Everything about Ymir screams city ‘80-90’s. She’d try to get you into them aswell.
- Back to regular AU, Ymir would show you affection by always being by your side. She's not as overbearing or protective as Mikasa, but she shows her affection by gifting, physical affection, and acts of service. Kisses you randomly and at times you’d never expect. You guys could be at a funeral and she’d be trying to make out with you while you're mourning the loss of your great uncle bill. (MY FANFIC IDEA BACK OFF I’M MAKING IT!!)
- Little things like twirling your hair in her fingers, or softly brushing up against you while walking past, a slap on your ass as when you turn back she gives you a smirky smile with a wink. Ymir can be cocky at times, hell that’s basically her whole personality, but love ig. (IM MESSING)
- Now for gifting, everytime she goes out in town, she buys you at least something. Whether it’s your favorite treat or a fancy necklace she stole, she's always thinking about you and your interests. Your questions about how in the world she got such an expensive gift always get ignored, it makes you worried she’s going too far, (The military doesn't pay that much anyway smh).
- You’d come home to your room spotless, your clothes folded, your bed made, your dresser organized and cleaned and your shoes aligned perfectly near the entrance. “Ymir?!” You said, shocked at what you just saw. “Hey baby” She’d say while kissing your cheek, whipping a rose from behind her. You laughed to yourself before kissing her back in appreciation, “Thank you sweetie, this helps me out a lot.... AND YOU VACCUMED!? I LOVE YOU OH MY GOD!”
- Ymir has such a love for nicknames, weather its you calling her one, or her calling you one. Of course, she loves your beautiful name~ Y/n how unique~ it’s like shes never seen your name in a fanfiction on tumblr before~~ BUT~ she hella likes calling you mammas. This woman is such a mama’s type. In Modern AU Collage, she’d be the one in the back of the classroom moaning “mommy” when the professor turns their head LMAO (totally haven’t done that before)
- The nicknames you’d use for her is “lovely,” “sweetie,” “alpha (AS A JOKE LMFAO NOT THE GATCHA SHIT ANYTHING BUT THE GATCHA SHIT) and probably “freckles,”
- she HATES when you tease her about her freckles. To be honest, I think she’s secretly, unironically, insecure about them. You didn’t catch onto this until later on, when you’d notice how every time you’d see her when you wake up they’d be there.
-During the day they were barely noticeable, and as you’d fall asleep, how they reappeared. You never thought of Ymir as a makeup person, until you found a matching skin tone powder in her bag. It finally started coming together. Her freckles disappearing, the skin tone powder in her bag, the way you catch her staring at her skin in the mirror. It all started to make sense, and honestly made you really sad. To you, Ymir was perfect, but I guess she didn’t see what you saw in her.
- You confronted her about it, and she said she doesn't’ like how “many” of them there are, to which you responded., “it’s only 102!” which is how many you counted. Anti-Gay Censorship in CDrama and US Drama: A Comparison
Chinese Censorship: As long as you can plausibly tell any children in the room that your characters are not fucking and are not literally gay married, go ahead and let your characters be their best gay selves.
If characters love each other deeply and want to express it through words and actions, that’s cool, just find a word that isn’t, like, “husband” or “wife” for their relationship. 知己 is a good one! But “like a true sister/true brother” is also acceptable. Obvious tenderness and joy in each others’ presence? Totally great!
Men, in particular, should have and express a full range of feelings; if they are very emotionally repressed, they need a good friend to help them overcome that strange, unhealthy way of being.
Adopting kids together? Sure! The kids can call both parents some variant of Aunt or Uncle but it’s also cute if they just add “Dad” to each parent’s surname.
Again, as long as you can plausibly say that their two dads aren’t fucking each other--even if they are no women in sight for decades at a time and they take every meal together and give each other backrubs--it’s all good, and in fact is a lovely way to tell a story about a family.
(more behind the cut)
As for happy endings - well, unless it’s a comedy, *someone* has to die tragically so they can be reunited in their next life, right? Because otherwise is it even a story?
Beautiful mourning and funeral scenes are such a great way to show how deeply characters care for each other, as well as being an opportunity for craploads of exposition, as characters explain the plot to their deceased loved ones.
But when deciding who to kill, it’s ok if the hetero characters take the hit. (If you can kill them within minutes of their wedding that’s optimal, but it’s also fine to kill them at another important occasion). Please make sure that anyone (gay or straight) who can’t have a happy ending in the current story promises to meet their true love in the next life. We don’t exactly encourage spiritual stuff, but we’re not made of stone.
If you insist on having your queers stay alive and end up clearly together, make sure you can prove you’re doing it to extract extra money from the audience. (Again, though: can you even call it a romance if nobody dies? isn’t it weird if nobody dies? *wistful sigh.*) If audiences want to pay extra for the novelty of queer characters not dying, that’s awesome and you should milk them for every yuan.
American Censorship
As long as the evangelical Christians who keep our advertisers on speed dial can be 100% convinced that a hero isn’t gay, we’re good. So if the hero cares deeply about their best friend, they should separate at the end of the story. Also they should punch things or people whenever they have a feeling about anything, to prove they are masculine and therefore not gay. And they should randomly make out with opposite-sex hotties if any are available.
Bonus points if the hottie has also made out with the other point of the definitely-not-love triangle at some point, because that means neither dude is gay.
Women who are friendly with other women, or who have, like, practical hairstyles, should talk about wanting babies. Our advertisers know that all women want babies and the only way to have one is by being heterosexually married to a dude.
If your heroine has a bestie who actually has a child already, the child should call your heroine “Auntie” because that’s what straight ladies like to be called.
If you want to have obvious gay people in your show, you need to either make it for a subscription channel like Netflix, that doesn’t need ad revenue, or put them in a scene that can be completely cut out when the homophobes notice it.
For bonus points, blame Chinese censors when you refuse to have gay main characters in your franchise! Even though your films flop so hard in China that they barely cover the cost of marketing.
Even on a subscription service, if you want your queer character to openly declare their love for their partner, it’s best to have them do it in response to harassment or death or feeling upset about something, not because they’re, like, happy.
When a gay character dies - which they should, because otherwise is it even a story? - some other characters can have a brief conversation to indicate that they were gay and somebody noticed that they died.
If the character was super important, their friends should have an informal gathering to celebrate their memory, rather than a proper funeral.
Proper funerals are for proper people.

“Layne”
“Layne Staley was one of many incredibly talented musicians that died much too young.” Fans of Alice in Chains know there was something special about him, but only few were fortunate enough to have actually known him personally. Bassist Mike Inez believes the singer is often misrepresented as gloomier than he truly was.
Alice in Chains are being granted with the 2020 Founders Award by the Museum of Pop Culture in their hometown of Seattle, and we had the chance to speak with Inez about the award and the honor. But we also wanted to know how Staley would feel about the achievement if he were still here today. "I think he would dig it," the bassist said. "It's so funny, Layne is so, kind of misrepresented in a way, everybody thought he was like gloom and doom and all negativity. But he probably laughed more than anybody. I miss his laugh so much. He was always looking for the joke and always just such a sweetheart of a guy." Inez went on to say that it actually bothers him when he sees the late singer mislabeled as a sullen and depressed person. "He had his troubles for sure, but he was just one of the sweetest, most filled-with-life people I think I've ever met in this life... God, I just loved every second with him." "He was just a good dude. People don't realize that about him, but we know. So I guess that's all that really matters," the rocker concluded.
“I got a call from Sean. He said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ there was a pause ‘Layne’s gone.’ ‘Oh my god, you’re kidding?’ That was one of the lowest points I think I’ve ever been in my whole time of existence. The private service was on this island, so you had to take a ferry there. I remember sitting with Chris Cornell, smoking cigarettes at the front of the ferry, just totally silent, listening to the waves hit the boat.” Many people from Seattle cared about Layne, the entire grunge community would even check on him in his final years. People from Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, who would occasionally buy food for Layne, to even people like John Fruciante of the Chili Peppers who would try and get him sober. As I said in a post from a while ago, Chris Cornell showed up to the funeral with his hair bleached in honor of Layne.

Today we remember the passing of Mia Zapata(27 Club) who Died: July 7, 1993 in Seattle, Washington
Mia Katherine Zapata (August 25, 1965 – July 7, 1993) was an American musician who was the lead singer for the Seattle punk band The Gits. After gaining praise in the nascent grunge scene, Zapata was murdered in 1993 while on her way home from a music venue, at age 27. The crime went unsolved for a decade before her killer, Jesus Mezquia, was tried, convicted and sentenced to 36 years in prison.
Mia Zapata was raised in Louisville, Kentucky and attended high school at Presentation Academy. Zapata learned how to play the guitar and the piano by age nine, and was influenced by punk rock as well as jazz, blues, and R&B singers such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles, Hank Williams, and Sam Cooke.
In 1984, Zapata enrolled at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio as a liberal arts student. In September 1986, she and three friends formed the punk rock band The Gits. In 1989, the band relocated to Seattle, Washington. Zapata found a job at a local bar and the four band members moved into an abandoned house they called "The Rathouse." The band released a series of well-received singles on local independent record labels from 1990 to 1991. As the Gits were making a name for themselves in the local music scene, they often played shows with their friends' band, 7 Year Bitch. In 1992, the band released its debut album Frenching the Bully. Their reputation progressively increased within the grunge scene in Seattle, before the band began work on their second and final album Enter: The Conquering Chicken, released in 1993.
Zapata came from an affluent family but often lived without material comforts. As her father described it: "Mia lived in two different worlds. She lived on two different sides of the street—the straight side on one, with parochial schools, an affluent family, and tennis clubs. But when she crossed the street, material things didn't mean anything to her." Zapata's music often led to a rejection of financial comfort, but regardless of status, Valerie Agnew describes Mia as "commanding respect and interest immediately".
Zapata was well connected to her community. Peter Sheehy recalls: "Mia was the hub of several social circles; a magnetic personality who drew all sorts of people together who otherwise might never have met." On his way to her funeral, Zapata's father became lost and recalls many people carrying yellow roses: the admission ticket to her service. Judge Sharon Armstrong, the judge during her killer's trial, highlighted Zapata as an "extraordinarily vibrant" girl, who was "obviously talented"; she was "struck by how closely Zapata had connected to so many people"
The Gits, who included guitarist Andrew "Joe Spleen" Kessler, drummer Steve Moriarty, and bassist Matt Dresdner, met in Ohio in 1986. A few years later, the band decided to move to Seattle to engage in city's burgeoning music scene. Within no time the Gits had developed a following amidst the local underground punk scene. Although the group was 75% men, the band as a whole and Zapata in particular became popular amongst the feminist community of Seattle at the time.
In 1990, after the move to Seattle, the Gits went on a successful international tour without the support of a record label. In 1992, their first independent album, Frenching the Bully, was released. The album had hits such as "Another Shot of Whiskey", "Second Skin", and "Here's to Your Fuck", receiving positive reviews. Throughout the recording of the second album, the band had planned a large U.S. and European tour as well as many local shows, all the while being courted by various labels. Unfortunately, before the band could finish and release their second album, Enter: The Conquering Chicken, Zapata was murdered. The band did continue making music, and found success in their second album with singles such as "Seaweed" and "Precious Blood".
Around 2 a.m. on July 7, 1993, Zapata left the Comet Tavern in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. She stayed at a studio space in the basement of an apartment building located a block away, and briefly visited a friend who lived on the second floor. This was the last time Zapata was seen alive. She may have walked a few blocks west, or north to a friend's apartment, or may have decided to take the long walk south to her home.
Zapata's body was discovered near the intersection of 24th Avenue South and South Washington Street at around 3:30 a.m, located in Seattle's Central District. She had been beaten, raped, and strangled. It is believed she encountered her attacker shortly after 2:15 a.m. Her body was not initially identified as she had no identification on her when she was found. An episode of the cable television show Forensic Files revealed that she was identified after the medical examiner, who was a fan of the Gits and had been to their concerts, recognized her. According to the medical examiner, if she had not been strangled, she would have died from the internal injuries suffered from the beating. According to court documents, an autopsy found evidence of a struggle in which Zapata suffered blunt impact to her abdomen and a lacerated liver.
Zapata is interred at Cave Hill Cemetery in her hometown of Louisville. The Seattle music community, including its most famous bands – Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden – helped raise $70,000 to hire a private investigator for three years. The funds dried up without any major breaks in the case, but the investigator, Leigh Hearon, continued to investigate on her own time. In 1998, after five years of investigation, Seattle police detective Dale Tallman said: "We're no closer to solving the case than we were right after the murder."
In 2003, Florida fisherman Jesus Mezquia, who had come from Cuba in 1980 in the Mariel boatlift, was arrested and charged in connection with Zapata's murder based on DNA evidence. A DNA profile was extracted from saliva found on Zapata's body and kept in cold storage until the STR technology was developed for full extraction. An original entry in 2001 failed to generate a positive result, but Mezquia's DNA entered the national CODIS database after he was arrested in Florida for burglary and domestic abuse in 2002. Mezquia had a history of violence toward women including domestic abuse, burglary, assault, and battery. All of his ex-girlfriends, and his wife, had filed reports against him. There was also a report of indecent exposure on file against him in Seattle within two weeks of Zapata's murder. However, there was no known prior link between Mezquia and Zapata.
Mezquia never testified in his own defense, and still maintains his innocence. The theory is that he saw Zapata leave the bar and followed her a short distance before he attacked. Her headset covered her ears so she would have been unaware of any danger until he grabbed her and dragged her to his car, where he assaulted her in the back seat. Mezquia was convicted in 2004 and initially sentenced to 37 years, which he appealed. He was then sentenced to 36 years.
