the project: the twelve moons
Búhos Nocturnos I –We're stuck in slow life. × I really don't think you're strong enough, no ×
『Diciembre 7』
XII. Yoscari Libano
Historia

So hellfireclub- hint at the d&d club, satanic panic around d&d and other things, and an X men ref. We also had lonnie implied to be satan in s3 - via Will holding the 'Satan's baby" firework.
Vecna's curse. In one of the audition tapes eddie plays a d&d game and calls it "the wizard's curse ". Vecna in d&d is wizard who became undead. Maybe like Will- the zombie boy/wizard ? IF VECNA WAS SECRETLY THE WIZARD-WILL THE WISE (a secret doppleganger of Will) COME TO LIFE? Or something akin to that- i’d be stoked! Would explain the billy (William) dopplegangers in s3, the dopplegangers in the st game, and dopplegangers in the robin novel.I need to look more into the vecna stuff tbh.
The leaks about the vecna could be true . I just find it odd they'd stop focusing on the upsidedown and mf ... unless he's a mf lackey of sorts ? I prefer vecna being related to the only other wizard we know in some capacity- not some rando new character- Peter/001. But, if my theory is right about Will subconsciously creating new characters because of tra*ma : like the monsters, numbers, creels, etc: his storyline could be symbolic of Will’s/jonathan’s past.
Monster and the superhero- I honest thought of the monster hurting "Bob newby superhero". Maybe Bob flashbacks? Maybe an allusion to bullies ? Bob mentioned his highshool bullies to joyce. And El was compared to “wonderwoman” (superhero) and is also bullied in highschool-like Bob. Also El thought she was a monster in s1- so maybe we revisit that perspective of El's to..
In a winter st comic special- hopper was also dressed like a superhero. So maybe we'll see Hopper dealing with brutal prison guards - as a parallel to El dealing with bullies.
Dear Billy-The fact the next episode references billy. Maybe in the episode prior joyce is mourning Bob? And Probably, the next ep, this ep, is max mourning billy? Max was mourning Billy while Hopper narrated a letter to El (while El mourns Hopper's "de*th when reading said letter ). The title "dear, billy" sounds like a letter too. In s3, she even gave El a hairband , like Hopper did in s2( it symbolized death of family and trying to move on). she may also not cope well, at first ,over the de*th of a family member - similar to hopper.
Not sure if there’s more references or parallels of Will&Jonathan to Billy- in this ep too. Jonathan does have a blonde mullet/is smoking (like Billy), and probably working at “surfer boy’ (like how billy surfed when in Cali,as a boy). Johnathan was even forced to k*ll a rabbit by his dad- billy's surname-hargrove means “field of rabbits”.Billy is a nickame for William-both were into atari, forced into baseball, and called h*mophobic names by their dad. And all 3 shared other parallels along with a shit dad. Heck jonathan & Will -also parallel Max too( Max has rabbit figurine, uses a bat in anger like Will, they’re all poor and have an absent bio dad, Will has a marty mcfly jacket and Max has marty’s skateboard, both max and Will are into videogames, max in s4 is also into music like the byers boys , and now all the 4 siblings have all lived in cali ,etc).
So this ep may focus on : max, Will, and jonathan- and have parallels to past familial issues and how it's impacted them negatively in the present. Along with max grieving and it- possibly paralleling hopper's past grief and or Joyce's past grief (over the loss of a loved one). It's also possible this de*th of a family member: may parallel possible paternal abandonment issues: of max, Will, and Jonathan's dad's leaving them.
The Nina project:
*Nina is also a RUSSIAN NAME - so maybe the "Nina project" is just the codename for the Russian’s version of the prior usa's ‘project’- relating to the demogorgan/upsidedown. Maybe the demogorgan escapes in the russian prison, in this ep? And is trying to eat the russian prisoners?
*the name of the russian's experiment could be a slight historical eastergg. Nina Kulagina, was a Russian woman who claimed to have psychic powers, particularly in psychokinesis. Academic research of her phenomenon was conducted in the USSR for the last 20 years of her life. Kulagina was suspected of utilizing hidden magnets and threads to perform her feats.
*Nina was also a character in a opera-song that played for the Hawkins lab promotional material. In the play, Nina wrongly assumed her loved one is dead- maybe this is when Joyce gets the russian doll? To imply hopper is alive? Or just when she learns he's alive?
*Nina means "enclosure of fish." Which is interesting cause Creel means "fish trap". So maybe more creel stuff? in this ep? Along with russia?
*The demogorgan (deep father)” feeds” /eats his victims. And we see during the dinner seq at the Creels is when Victor, the dad (or some supernatural force) attacks the family (who have a fish related name). COULD be a clever way to connect those 2 storylines together . Along with possibly papa.
*The play with Nina is called "the woman crazed with love". So since byler is pretty much the only pairing who reciprocated the (romantic) crazy phrase i wonder if there's any refs to it. In the play Nina lost her memories. So repressed memories of El and Will may resurface.
So maybe a mix of : Joyce finding out hopper is alive in Russia. Demogorgan (deep father) attacking Russians trapped in the prison .The dad victor creel terrorizes his fam who are similarly trapped in a house. And to tie it to fathers even more - maybe repressed memories of El (over papa/the lab) and Will (over lonnie) resurface. The "hellfireclub" (ep 1 title) is from the storyline in xmen- which involved repressed memories too. And correlates to the jean/ dark phoenix saga - which Will referenced in s1. Jean (has telekeneis) but the dark phoenix (had fire abilities like Will the wise). EL in s2 was shown to repress memories & Will in said season had "now memories" (and i do believe he also has repressed memories as well). Nina in the play : had a father who didn't support her 'crazy' love- so maybe byler v lonnie .
The dive - right after the fish imagery -we have water imagery. Steve going under water in that one teaser- after going in the creel's probably? There's always been negative connotations to water in the whole series. So maybe there's reference to other s4 water allusions or past references too.Cali surfing, tubs, watery dark abyss, isolation tank, the quarry, pools, etc.
Let’s hope the expression of de*th :“swimming with the fishes” isn’t applicable to anyone. Maybe... if so- it’s the flashback of the Creel’s deaths. since there surname is associated with fish traps. And I still also have a hunch Creel’s son’s name is Gil (nickname for William/and like a fish gil-both him and Will are artists too). Especially with his sister Alice creel and the rabbit being connected to Jonathan’s hunting story with his dad + El’s s1 connections to the white-rabbit in ‘alice in wonderland’.
Massacre at hawkins lab- maybe an el flashback of what happened there (in that one teaser). if not... S2 ref? there was a massacre there with the demodogs? Or it’s Something we haven't seen yet? Perhaps the Massacre at the dessert of the usa baddies?
Papa- probably Brenner finally returning. maybe finally capturing El? Heck Would be cool if Lonnie & Papa returned in the same ep. But who knows maybe we have to wait till s5- for Lonnie. Or who knows- maybe this PAPA episode has a lot of dark dad imagery- Brenner, Creel, demogorgan ( called ’deep father’), Lonnie?, Neil?Hopper’s dad? (via flashbacks or present moments). That would be compelling.
Piggy back- yall I'm not sure . Hopper gave Sarah a piggyback i think. So maybe Hopper /Sarah flashbacks? And Mike stole Nancy's piggy bank. It could reference the slang ‘piggy back’-”: the movement of loaded truck trailers on railroad flatcar”. Maybe a form of escape for Hopper or El? Some of the s4 movies had people try to escape via train.

Have you ever heard of Nina Kulagina?
March 10, 1970. Nina Kulagina with the power of her mind stopped the beat of a frog's heart.
The record of this experiment is currently held in the files of Professor Gennady Sergeyev of Saint Petersburg.
And as Sergeyev interpreted this cardiogram it seemed to him that the heart had experienced a sudden flare-up of electrical activity.
The heart imploded, the arteries burst and all because Nina Kulagina wanted the animal dead.

So, this is from Will Byers’ Secret Files. It doesn’t seem to be a particularly serious book. It’s mostly fun little Easter eggs for the gap between seasons 2 and 3. There’s some neat character stuff in there, and you can get a sense of everyone’s relationships to Will through little notes and things they left for him.
Still, I saw people on Twitter talking about this, so I had to check it out.
Nina Kulagina. She was a real woman who lived from 1926-1990, and she had purported psychic powers.
Nina. The Nina Project?
Now, I don’t really expect this woman to end up being a character in the show. I feel it’s bad taste to put real people into fiction, unless it’s a public figure like a politician. I feel the same way with using real events, particularly tragic ones, such as Chernobyl.
However...
What if the Russians started their own version of MKUltra with the intentions of creating another Nina (or a real one, depending on whether her abilities were real in the ST universe). Or maybe it was an American effort to create its own “Nina.”
It could be a massive coincidence, but I just don’t see why this would need to be in the book if it didn’t connect to things somehow.
Or maybe I’m just bored and overthinking things.

Shared Loneliness
Stranger Things Fic, Henry/Peter centered. Set mainly at Hawkins Lab ontheyear prior to the massacre.
In which there's a Nineteenth Subject and another new investigation taking place at Hawkins Lab and Henry (known as Peter Ballad the Friendly Orderly) forges an unlikely bond that might just about restore his faith in humanity. Might.
Warnings: child neglect/mentions of physical and emotional abuse. Other than that it's fluff. No smut, non-romantic relationship between the main characters.
Disclimer: If I owned the show it would be very different. So I can only take credit for the character of Nina and my take on these events.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter One: The Understanding
They called it The Nina Project. Henry, or whatever was left of him, found it incredibly fitting. He knew why Papa named it like that. Nina Kulagina and the opera she inspired. But that wasn’t the Nina it was really named after.
It was his Nina. The one person he had truly failed. His one true regret. The sole error he wishes he could mend.
She wasn’t a year old; just a child who hadn’t wronged anybody despite only being wronged by everybody else. The epitome of innocence.
If only he could turn the needles of his clock and reverse time. Butwhat would he change? Would he really sacrifice himself and keep his soteria so she could be free? Would he allow her to perish out of mercy?
Would it really be any different if she had never existed at all?
He always had these questions somewhere in the back of his mind. Eversince the day of her birth-- well, not birth.
Delivery.
“It’s been a success!” Martin Brenner had announced, on the morning of September 22nd, 1978. He was dressed in a medical scrub and had the proud smile of a scientist having just made a revolutionary discovery. “As of today, we have Nineteen subjects.”
Another subject? No one had told them there would be a new subject. He looked at Mark, the orderly he shared this shift with, to see him just as shocked.
“Did you know, Peter?”
“No, I did not.”
“I knew they were working long hours upstairs but I thought it would be a new machine for the tests.”
Upstairs referred to the top floor of the Hawkins Laboratory, which was where all the proper, delicate experiments took place. It made sense for it to be a new machine of some sort since the power had been coming and going continuously during the previous hour.
“One would think eighteen kids would be enough.”
“One kid would have been enough,” mumbled Peter through gritted teeth.
He later learned that Nineteen wasn’t conceived like the others. She had never known a mother or a womb, other than a recipient upstairs.
“We made it, Dr. Parker,” he’d overheard him say as he passed his office. “Yes, they are already manifesting. Mainly elektrokinesis thus far…”
He would often remember those words, ‘we made it’, and have an overwhelming strike of sadness. That subject, that child, hadn’t even been conceived but produced, forged, fabricated. And she hadn’t been born, either. Instead she had been delivered, extracted. Made. Whereas he and the other children had at least got to spend nine months with their mothers, however unsettling those conditions were. Nineteen wouldn’t have anything to take solace on.
Maybe that will makeit easier, he thought. Maybe not having anything to compare it with, no one to miss, will assist in her adaptation, make her stronger…
His train of thought was abruptly interrupted by the split second of complete darkness accompanied by echoing screams across the hallway he was mopping. The emergency lights soon came on, dying the hallways red.
“Peter, check on the kids,” someone said. Maybe it was his own conscience reminding him of his duties. He was gonna check on the kids, of course, he just had to take a peak first.
He peered through the door’s window. A fellow orderly, Jason, was storming out the first door on the left, blood streaming down his right eye. He heard shattering glass anda cry higher than any other. Only then he understood it was in the nursery.
He knew he had to go before being seen but it was hard to look away from the chaos. Electrokinesis. He had a shiver down his spine. Excitement? Why?
He eventually did go checking on the rest of the kids. Most were in their beds, undisturbed. Only Eleven was awake.
“I heard a noise.”
“Nothing to be worried about.”
“Why is the hallway red?”
“The power is out but they are working on it. Just go back to sleep.”
She laid back down and he closed the door.
The power was still gone the following morning as he led the kids to the dining room. On their way to theRainbow room they heard a drill from behind the doors of the hallway.
“What is that?” asked Six.
“Nothing you have to worry about, children.”
He had his shifts with Mark again that morning.
“Did you see it?”
“See what?”
“Jason lost an eye. He’s at the infirmary.”
“What happened?”
“Is the new subject, her abilities must have something to do with the lights or whatever. She cried so loud during the tattoo that all the bulbs in the nursery exploded.”
Wow. “So that was the blackout.”
“Yeah. I think Brenner’s having some kind of fort built in there, man. Nurse Callie told me he freaked out last night”
Too much to handle. Serves them well.
“So much for the next generation.”
Oh right. So that’s what it was about. He was aware, like most of the staff, about the rumors of Brenner’s plans to start a new generation of subjects with improved abilities. Carved from a different stone, as he said.
Peter understood now. This generation was to be produced, made entirely in the lab. Replacing the womb for a jar and an incubator and subsequently sparing all problems and investigations from people like Terry Ives.
He had been locked away for killing his hypocritical family but Brenner was a genius for setting up a factory where psychic babies would be mass-produced then used as weapons. How deeply unjust and disturbing was that?
On top of that, the story was repeating itself. People like Martin Brenner thought they could simply rise above their past mistakes, regardless of how big they had been. Their arrogance fooled into believing there was no lesson to be learn, that they had control. But they were wrong. Now there was a child with too much power and a total lack of understanding of it. Their solution? Cage her, seal her away, like a wild beast. And eventually, cut her neck open and implant a soteria on her. Then move on to the next subject, try again, best of luck. You can always use an extra pair of hands in the laundry room if it’s unsuccessful.
It made him livid, or as close as he could feel to it.
Over the following week he learnt that the subject was kept inside the new acrylic cot, made of a special kind of glassthat bended instead of cracking. Nothing could penetrate it, so the outside world was unaffected by whatever could happen inside.
Only the minimum and strictly necessary contact was to be had with the child, with protective gloves and through the lateral holes, never lifting the upper lid of the crib. It reminded Peter of the solitary confinement in psychiatric hospitals and prisons. Just the thought of it made his stomach turn.
He wasn’t surprised to hear the child spent most of her days squalling at the top of her lungs, only giving the guards’ ears some rest when exhaustion won her over for a few hours at a time. How lonely it must be, even for someone unfamiliarized with the concept of company.
He himself had some comforting memories from his childhood, before he became aware of the truth behind his parents' masks. Memories of warmth, being carried in his mothers arms, holding his sister's hand as they ran around the backyard, being lifted up his fathers’ shoulders to see his first fireworks on the 4th of July. Now the meant little to him but they did use to bring him some sort of comfort against the unfamiliar coldness of the lab.
He felt for her. The knowledge of what was going on behind those doors kept him awake. Maybe because, in a way, he was partly responsible. He had been the first. Without him, these atrocities would have never been committed. It wasn’t his fault but not even he was heartless enough to ignore the stinger of guilt that struck him whenever a new subject entered the program, or a punishment was being implemented.
On the sixth evening, Eleven asked him about the strange noises coming from the next hallway.
“Papa says it’s a surprise. But it’s scary.”
“If it’s a surprise it’s not my place to spoil it.”
“I hope it’s not another kitten.”
Peter could only shrug.
Truth was curiosity was also taking him over. What could be so bad.
He passed his room and opened the doors to the opposite hallway. The guard outside was asleep with his earmuffs on. He gently took a hold of his card and let himself in. There was no one inside.
The cot was in the middle of the room surrounded by machines and wires coming in and out of it. He approached cautiously. Subject Nineteen was squirming stoplessly, face strained and soaked in tears. She wasn’t larger than his hand.
"Hello little one. I'm Peter and I have a proposition for you, hm? Let's see if we can get to an understanding, you and I."
He disconnected the tubes and machines and unlocked the glass, paying no attention to the lights starting to flicker in irregular patterns. He concentrated on carefully- sliding one hand below her lower back and the other beneath her head. She was warm and soft to the touch.
"Hush now, here we go. Here we go." He lifted her up and examined her up-close for a moment.
The poor thing was an absolute wreck and there was no doubt the stories were true. She definitely looked like she'd been crying fifteen hours a day for the last week. It was also evident she was getting insufficient sleep, since despite her persistent cries her throat was visibly sore and swollen and she fidgeted drowsily. There was also a trail of dry blood coming out of her nose all the way down her onesie.
"You poor, poor little thing,” he muttered, slowly bringing her to rest against his shoulder.
He felt her stiffening and guessed this must be confusing to someone who had spent their entire existence inside acrylic containers.
"Hush, I know, I know. You thought loneliness was all there was, uh?" he let his thumb stroke her soft skull. "Well, welcome to the other side."
He stood there, upper body swaying ever so slightly, not wanting to give her motion sickness after so much time still. He held her close enough to let her know she was safe but allowing her to move should she wish to do so. He knew he had to be patient, that she would understand it soon enough. Her need for an emotional anchor would surpass her current confusion and her tears would stop falling.
After a while he started to feel her heartbeat slowing down through the layers of clothing and skin between them. Her cries also faded gradually until the only thing he heard was her laborious uneven breathing.
"There you are, all better, hm?" he whispered, once all the lights had steadied. "You just needed some proper company. A little perspective, is that right?"
Growing confident he moved her into the crook of his right arm and reached for the soft rag on his pocket, wiping the crusts that had formed around her eyes and the blood threatening to clog her nose.
"There's a pretty face," he mumbled once he was done.
They locked their eyes together and something happened. An agreement. A mutual understanding of each other. A shared loneliness. The start of a companionship, perhaps a friendship. He couldn't translate it into mere words, it transcended them.
A gentle squeeze on the tip of his thumb brought him back to reality. "Hello again, little miss. Yes, it's very nice to meet you." He took notice of the small smile that had conquered his features and became aware that, to his surprise, it was the first genuine reaction he'd had in years.
She seemed to have found peace in his arms and to believe that if she kept a tight enough grasp on his finger there was nowhere he could go. He found he wouldn't mind if time stopped and kept them both in that moment forever. But of course he knew it didn't work that way.
He knew very well that he was being observed through the security camera and that he would have a lot to answer for whenever Papa decided to irrupt and disrupt their bubble. But he thought he might enjoy it while it lasted.
He kept swaying on the spot, watching her eyelids get heavy with each blink until they stopped trying to open and continued for a while after that, until the bubble burst with the door clicking open.
"Hello, Peter," his voice was perfectly neutral and professional. "What a surprise to find you here. Especially when you were meant to be on bedtime duty."
He sighed and also adopted a perfectly neutral and professional voice as he turned around. "I am, sir. That's why I thought I would tuck this one in as well."
"I see. And while you've had an... Unprecedented success, you know you have disobeyed direct orders to not extract the subject from the cot. You almost provoke another blackout which could severely damage the facility and our progress in the current investigation."
"None of that happened, sir."
"Fortunately for you, yes. However the outcome does not justify the means so you must return the subject to her designated space and follow me."
He felt his arms tightening around the infant but knew better than to argue. So he paced back to the bassinet and carefully placed the tubes on her nostrils before sealing the glass, holding his breath when she stirred. She didn't wake up, however.
"Please do follow me, Peter." Papa's voice commanded.
He walked to him and took one last glance at the child as the door closed.
"That was impressive, Peter, I'll give you that."
"I was just trying to help."
"And what made you think it was required?"
"Lucky guess," he said, struggling to keep his teeth from gritting.
"As I was saying... Very, very impressive." Brenner stopped at a door and unlocked it, beckoning him to enter. "After you."
He had been there many times. It was the interrogation room, the psychological torture chamber. Conveniently soundproofed, it was also used to implement physical tactics, as they were called.
Nobody could be certain what would happen once the door was closed.

Stalker’s daughter Monkey (Natasha Abramova), wherein she appears to have telekinetic powers. Apparently based on Soviet scientist Edward Naumov’s film depicting a test of Nina Kulagina’s psychic abilities, Tarkovsky said of this enigmatic scene, “We don’t know ourselves all that well; sometimes we manifest forces that can’t be measured by normal standards. I expect something like that to happen at any time.” Sean Martin suggests that the ‘miracle’ of telekinesis is not the one we should be contemplating. The fact that Stalker’s wife still loves him is the “miracle, especially in a world as bereft of spiritual values as the world of Stalker seems to be.” +

The CIA Hologram Document Explained
Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 PARAPSYCHOLOGY IN THE USSR. I. Reports of studies of psi in the USSR go back to the mid 19th century. According to MARTIN EBON, in his book, “PSI IN THE USSR, RELIGION WITHOUT A CROSS” (see Appendix 1, Reference Literature), Russian scientists and laity have been researching various parapsychological phenomena for decades before the 1917 October Revolution. - From 1857 to 1867, the newspaper "WESTNIK EUROPY® in Petersburg appeared, which dealt with mediums and other openly unexplainable phenomena. - The medium phenomenon was re-examined for its veracity around 1860 by a special committee of the Physical Society of the University of Petersburg, which was founded just for this purpose, and a dispute developed between Mendeleev and the then-prominent spiritualist A.N. Askov over the presumptions and methodologies of the study. Mendeleev had openly exposed fraudulent mediums. - The oldest known report of telepathy experiments in Russia describes, as does EBON in his book, telepathy experiments in Tashkent through Alexander Wilkins around 1870, and was published in Paris in the "Annals of Physical Science”. - The Russian Society for Experimental Psychology was founded in 1891. t was interested in clairvoyance, psychometry and poltergeist phenomena. Materialism led to a search for new, new, no longer religious truths. Hypnosis, seances, with their connections to ghosts, and a string of unexplainable, supernatural phenomena such as thought transference and other related areas were popular. - So, research in parapsychology in the USSR was about the same as in the USA and other European countries up until the time of the industrial revolution. II. EBON lists other scientists and works in parapsychology which occurred between the 1917 October revolution and the mid ’50s: - VLADIMIR M. BECHTEREV (Leningrad): mental communication between dogs and humans. - P,P. LAZAREV (1922): published "Psycho-chemical Principles of the Higher Nerve Energies", in which the possibility of telepathic communication due to neurological functions was studied. - B.B. KASCHINSKI: conducted other pertinent studies of mental telepathy with dogs, and published a book on thought transference in Moscow in 1923. ~ LEONID L. VASILIEV (died in 1966). He is convinced that the discovery of ESP energy will be of the same significance as atomic energy. ~ 1961: L.L. Vasilyeva received the leadership of the first ESP laboratories sponsored by the soviet administration; the Special Laboratory for Parapsychology at the University of Leningrad. - After Vasilyeva’s death in 1966, the centre of soviet parapsychological research partially shifted from Leningrad to Moscow, where IPPOLIT KOGAN, Director of the Section for Bioinformation on the totally soviet scientific and technical A.S. Popov Institute for Radiotechnology and Electrical Communication was located. - EDUARD K. NAUMOV and KARL NIKOLAEV were known at this time through telepathy experiments which were conducted over the distance of Moscow to Leningrad, - In the summer of 1968 a conference in Moscow on "Technical Parapsychology” took place. - NINA KULAGINA and WOLF MESSING are the two most famous soviet “tears” of this time with supposedly especially great parapsychological talent. N. KULAGINA fascinated onlookers with 2 Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 Abutted For Rele P96-00792R000500210001-9 psychokinetic abilities, in which she made compass needles and other articles move with an energy which seemed to radiate from her hands. W. MESSING held large crowds of spectators with his telepathic exhibitions in Bann. - In July, 1970, the Russian newspaper “Radio-Technika” published research results of the above mentioned professor KOGAN in Moscow, which had supposedly convincingly proven the existence of telepathic possibilities through statistical methods. ~ 8S. OSTRANDER and L. SCHROEDER in their book "PSI* maintained that while, by 1970 there were already more than 30 centres in the USSR for the study of paranormal phenomena, and that by 1967 there were already yearly budgets of at least 13 million rubbles had been put at their disposal for these studies, and parapsychology in the USSR enjoyed official sanction, VLADIMIR LVOV's article in the newspaper LE MONDE (4 AUG 76) denied it (official) recognition in the USSR. He logically pointed out in his article that it is a mistake to accept that parapsychology enjoyed official recognition in the USSR. Moreover, the truth was simply that, parapsychology in the Soviet Union was not recognized as an official branch of science. No institute and no research centre in the Soviet Union devoted itself to telepathy or psychokinesis, etc., but there were simply a group of amateurs who associated themselves with the paranormal. According to EBON, this opposing opinion makes clear the unpleasant situation in which parapsychology found itself in Russia at this time. It held no official status, but individuals and private groups could carry on such studies without special official intervention, Further examples of the historical development of soviet parapsychology are found listed in Appendix 1, Reference literature of western authors. The book "PSI" by S. OSTRANDER and L. SCHROEDER contains an extensive source of proof. It. A literature search on the theme, made in open-source databanks in December, 1990, for the time around 1968, turned up 27 institutes and/or centres in which researchers were occupied with paranormal phenomena, in the widest sense of the term (see List of Institutes, Appendix 2). Here were explored practically all aspects of parapsychology, such as the general concept "ESP" line German, ASW), and the subject reports of telepathy, telepathic hypnosis, clairvoyance, as well as the concept of "psychokinesis” (the physical influence of man over matter), which encompasses the study of the human biofield, the application of the KIRLIAN effect, and healing through laying on of hands. There appear to be the reports of telepathy and telepathic hypnosis, like hypnosis per se, which the most basic research and the widest development of reports of soviet parapsychology. VASILIEV, in his book on experimental studies of "mental suggestion”, showed the advanced position of (such) pertinent research in the USSR. Efforts toward the aimed telepathic manipulation of human consciousness seem to have played a large role in telepathic hypnosis. Research and application of hypnosis is wide spread in the USSR. It is used in medicine, psychotherapy, physiology, psychology, psychiatry, and in experimental education. Also the possibility of the development and application of drugs for the augmentation of hypnosis was researched. soviet scientists such as L.L. VASILIEV, I.M. KOGAN, V. MUTSCHALL, V.F. BASSIN, M.V. AVAKUMOV, ID. DUBROVSKI, V.L. RAIKOV and PA. SLOBODYANIK, with their co-authors have made names for themselves in the above named reports for the timespan of 1968 on. The exceptional works published just in the 3 years 1969-1971 by S.A. EGOROV, P.V. ZAGRYADSKI, F.D. MORDVINOV and N.B. YAKOVETS and their co-authors from the Kirov Military-Medical Academy in Leningrad, fall especially into the area of psychophysiological research in connection with ergonometric questions, and only peripherally have something to do with parapsychology (see also Appendix 3, Author list). Isil. It was reported again and again in the rainbow press that the military and the secret police were behind the Russian efforts to get a scientific grip on parapsychology. The contents of these statements could never be substantiated and the soviet open-source literature on parapsychology also gives no reliable evidence. Certain revelations in the past years in the USSR have made assumptions that research has been done here - but these and the research results were and will be held in secret. Signs of the efforts of soviet parapsychologists to use telepathy as a world-wide telecommunications system for cosmonauts between one another and between earth and the cosmonauts in Space were already visible in the 50’s. In 1967, the Russian trade paper "Marine Report” wrote that cosmonauts in apace can “gat together (mentally) with each other easier than with people on earth. Psi-training wag said to have been taken up on the cosmonauts training program. Supposedly, phenomenal psi experiments between soviet cosmonauts and scientists on the earth were said to have been conducted. The dates and results of these experiments, however, were not published in open-source literature, so a firm evaluation of these efforts is not possible. In a purely news-report fashion, the subject-complexity of parapsychology in the USSR and its application by the military and the KGB is contradictory, based on, in part, conflicting rumours: - In 1977 a specialist in Psychiatry from the Serb ski Institute in Moscow, with a good possibility of insight into the situation declared in an article named "CONTROLLED BY THE KGB” which appeared in “Der SPIEGEL” (4 JUL 77), that Psi in the USSR was an unrealistic sensationalism of half-truths and the fantasies of 4 Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 Journalist, Parapsychology was not a recognized science in the USSR. The arrest of the American Journalist TOTH at that time didn’t reveal that parapsychology in the USSR could have been seen as a state secret. It could have dealt with a completely normal paper of the KGB which a western journalist took from a soviet citizen, SG1B In the USSR, "Psi capabilities of biological systems” is the theme of exhaustive studies. The buzz-words for it are “Bioenergy” and “Hypersensitivity”. In the area of the so-called EMV~/EMC research a newly named scientific trend, under the buzz-word "Psychotronic”, shall be researched (to see) if it is actually a latent human possibility to be able to activate one’s bioelectric Field to join with distant objects and subjects. The principal of “Laying on of the hands” as a diagnostic tool for the sick will be conducted in the Poly-clinic of the State Planning Committee of the USSR in Moscow, which is situated directly under the Health Ministry. To the list of institutes which are occupied with the problem of "the nature of the biological energy field” belong, among others: The Institute for Psychology, Moscow, 37a Vavilov St. (Director, B.F. Lomo), fields of study: research of the material basis of the Psyche; psychological problems in its relationship to the driving of modern technology: Psychophysiology of the brain. These take place in cooperation with work in “the laboratory for cell physiology and synaptic control” of the "Institute for Higher Nerve Activity and Neurophysiology”, Moscow, and with the “Department of Kinetics Chemical and Biological Processes" of the Institute of Chemical Physics (N.N. Semenov)”, Moscow. This project also addresses research into the “KIRLIAN-effect”, the physical proof of “finger radiation", which, for example, might allow lay practitioners to make diagnoses, to achieve healings with this particular process, triggered on the skin of the human body or on the surface of various plants. Equipment necessary for the proof of the "KIRLIAN-effect” was developed and built in the "Special Construction Bureau” for the "biological apparatus building” in Podcatching. Connections with the application of psychoparmacopia 5 Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9 43 a simulation for the PSI ability should be undertaken at the Pacific Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry” in Vladivostok. It is interesting that “materialistic science” (tries) first of all to prove that all events are physically explainable. On this basis, the proof of the appearance of “rays” which come from living things demands a great deal of dedicated research, By the same token, it is also interesting to find out the possibilities of strengthening and making this type of “rays” useful for various applications. The applications Span from medical fields, like diagnosis and healing in a relatively simple (and cheap) way by influencing of the “psychically sick” (as it is officially called), to the communication between living beings over short or long distances, without tapping into or disturbing such a communications system. - In November 1986 a western scientist with the Opportunity of good insight into the research and application of medical hypnosis in the USSR transmitted the following details: Medical hypnosis is used intensively in the RGW field in the USSR. The primary work "Chemical and Experimental Hypnosis” by WILLIAM S, KROGER serves as the groundwork for the basis of corresponding intended research. The basic research for the subject area of “medical hypnosis” is carried out in the USSR at the Pavlov Institute and the Institute of Psychology in Moscow, as well as in “some branches” in Siberia. It deals with a known discipline within “psychosomatic medical word”, and this hypnosis will be inserted into several areas of Operative medicine, but algo therapy for the alleviation and elimination of pain, as it deals with neurologically conditioned pain. Beyond that, various groups have been schooled in the basis of the so-called “hypnotic Influence”, such as a scientist to whom important assignments have been given, or those appointed to special interest organizations in western countries, and also cosmonauts taking a 3-month hypnosis training course. That means that if the person tries to gain a "photographic memory”, it enables him to faithfully recapture visuals, audial, and even after a longer time, pictures and letters, Insofar as the above contents of these “service reports” which refer to the tangle of military or KGB interests, are whole, but also only partly proven, they cannot be Judged as undoubtable, APPENDIX 1 contains a reference list of western authors and a bibliography of their related works, APPENDIX 2 contains a reference list of soviet institutions with contributing authors and the titles of their works. APPENDIX 3 contains a reference list of soviet authors and a bibliography of their related works. Approved For Release 2000/08/15 : CIA-RDP96-00792R000500210001-9
