A Gentleman with a Top Hat, George Manuel Unwin Esq.' (1911) Nina Hamnett was a greatly admired artist whose work was exhibited widely during WW1 at both the Royal Academy in London and the Salon d'Automne in Paris. In 1932, she published 'Laughing Torso,' (an autobiographical account of her controversial life) which became a bestseller in the U.K. and America. She is now recognised as a powerful proponent of British Modernism, and her work is held in prominent collections, including the Tate, and the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Roger Eliot Fry - Portrait of Nina Hamnett (1917)
A painter and conspicuous bohemian, Nina Hamnett was an important link between the artistic communities of London and Paris. She knew avant-garde artists such as Modigliani and the sculptor Brancusi. She was also closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group, working for a period at Roger Fry's Omega Workshop. This portrait was painted during or shortly after her brief love affair with Fry. In this austere portrait, Fry has managed to convey the sitter's intelligence and independent spirit. Hamnett’s bohemian lifestyle is suggested by her unconventional clothes and modern bobbed haircut. (source)

Nina Hamnett (deceased)
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
DOB: 14 February 1890
RIP: 16 December 1956
Ethnicity: Welsh
Occupation: Artist, writer, model
Note: Flamboyantly unconventional, and openly bisexual, Hamnett once danced nude on a Montparnasse café table just for the "hell of it".  She drank heavily, was sexually promiscuous, and kept numerous lovers and close associations within the artistic community. Very quickly, she became a well-known bohemian personality throughout Paris and modeled for many artists.
