finally drew a colored picture of this character, because I’m going to be playing an au version of him in a d&d campaign and needed to make a ref for my character token

Have you reviewed nimmos by any chance? They arent my favourite pet but i do think my dislike of them comes from how theyre posed rather than their actual design
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We actually have two different frog Neopets, but I will say they're pretty different from each other. While Quiggles are inherently silly guys and very short, Nimmos are tall and considerably less silly. In contrast, hey have a sort of meditative guru vibe to them, which is sort of evident in the pose with the hands and the stance.
In terms of the design, I like them overall. The wide mouth makes for a fun kind of :3 expression, and the body has a pretty distinct shape to it that makes it so they're not too much like a real frog. I could kind of take or leave the underbelly—I don't mind it, but they're thin enough that it doesn't feel like it's needed to break up the space, and it feels like it should go under the mouth as well or something.
Tumblr media
I also agree that the posing of these guys is a little weird, as they're stuck in like a weird sideways slav squat. I like the idea of them having long frog legs in contrast with the Quiggle, but the problem is that the knees of the legs go to the side instead of the front, when in reality they should be facing forward like at least 20% more and the top part should be more horizontal to the body. The butt being above the ground rather than on it also doesn't help anything. Oddly, there also aren't many options that let you break from this pose—even colors like Faerie maintain the same off putting leg structure.
Tumblr media
Nimmos have mostly stayed the same after customization and arguably improved, with minor fixes like adjusting the feet so they're actually at the right perspective relative to the body.
Favorite Colours:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baby: First off, having the baby Nimmo just be a tadpole is a great concept, and secondly, it's pretty cute as well. The face is just similar enough for it to still look like a Nimmo, and the dark spots on the body provide nice contrast with the more teal-ish colored tail. There's both a converted and UC/styled version, though this is a rare instance where the converted is way better—the pose is more lively, the pupils are larger so it looks less dead-eyed, and the shading has been improved.
Tumblr media
Toy: The toy Nimmo is actually based on the IRL Sand Critters frog plush, but even if you didn't recognize it off the bat, it's still a great design all around. The green and orange striping makes for a nice palette, the subtle spotting adds a nice texture, and the red eyes pop. Also, this kind of highlights what I was talking about earlier with the underbelly—it looks a lot more natural extended up onto the jaw.
Tumblr media
Wraith: The wraith Nimmo is not the best wraith pet or anything—the swirls are very arbitrarily placed over the body instead of contouring and playing with the body's actual shapes, and the bulk of the swirls are a bit too low-contrast. However, the big thing here is the lovingly detailed face... on the stomach, with a regular face to match. I have no idea why it's like this because no other Wraith pet does this, but damn if it doesn't look cool as hell, and more than makes up for the lack of flow in the rest of the body. I also really like the neat swirly pupils they used here.
Tumblr media
BONUS: The Maraquan Nimmo is both one of the worst and yet also one of the best Maraquan pets, and I absolutely hate and love it. Why is it a spider crab? Why does it just look like a normal crab with a Nimmo's face? Who cares. 10/10 get this thing out of my house

Had intended on finishing this piece while their respective days were running the prior month. Obviously kept putting it aside until now-ish.
The Quiggle's expression was an artifact of the Nimmo being a crab in an earlier draft/sketch. But now they're just offput by how close this Nimmo is, said frog means well.

So hey since you've been talking about neopets lately, there's a 2000s neopets recreation site I've been noodling about on (Grundo's Cafe) and they recently released a Botanical color that themes pets after real life plants - and today they released botanical Nimmo, which is a flytrap, and immediately made me think of you bc there's an alt color with no pupils. I don't know how to Tumblr aside from lurking but here's some screencaps I took that I think you might appreciate if it works right!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh these are beautiful, yeah the "real" neopets calls this Woodland and it's so unambitious most of the time that this is what they did for the Nimmo instead of a fly trap frog:
Tumblr media
You'd think anyone would have immediately made the frog/flytrap connection and the fact that Nimmo's head is already shaped right for it but no it's just wooden with leaves on it

i wanna be clear i came to bat for kikos, i feel that spiritually they are among the most neopets of all time.
but we took into consideration the average neopian's opinion of them, and we felt like a normie neopian just can't appreciate the raw power of Ball

people don’t talk about quiggles much but i literally feel like their redesign was one of the absolute worst things to happen during conversion TBH. i loved these little guys as a kid (I loved frogs and had IRL pet frogs and a lot of nimmos and quiggles lol). my first neopets plush was a little starry quiggle i got from mcdonalds. the idea of a big frog whose entire body is just a wide open smile was so fun to me and i still think the original design is so endearing and its like laughably bad that their idea of redesigning it was... to just. close its mouth. literally whats the point.

Ranking Neopets! #1
idk if anyone did this before. i’m gonna do these in batches of 4 and the score will be 1 out of 10! now, i don’t really have many nostalgic thoughts about these, cuz i didn’t play really as a kid. so!!!! let’s start off with the first 4. and keep in mind! just my opinion!!
Tumblr media
NIMMO!! - sure is a frog! frogs are good. - pretty basic, but not bad, y’know. always need more frog love. - ehhh 6/10.
Tumblr media
SCORCHIO!!
- dragon! again, i’m a bit biased. - gives me faint dragonite vibes. - i really like the blue one.  - all in all, dragon! 8/10.
Tumblr media
JUBJUB!
- hehe funny name. - they are......oddly cute for just being a ball with feet and a face. - kinda hate the big feet............ - but they ain’t bad. 5/10.
Tumblr media
GRARRL!!
- i like it’s name a lot! - literally just a t-rex. i do love dinos. - i like the grarrl npc’s i seen while playing! - basic design. still delightful. 6/10.

digital dreams pt. 2 - the neopian review
PT 1
some neopets look pretty goddamn weird.
weirdness is of course subjective, and can possibly make certain things more appealing, but it’s a little hard to look at a virtual buddy and feel compelled to look after it if it’s...well, weird. and of course as someone who’s been playing neopets for a while, i have biases towards certain species, so to provide an impartial judgement on which neopets are most “kind of weird looking”, my dear friend @combocannon allowed me to show her a variety of neopets that she (as someone who went untained by the New Pets) has offered her opinion on.
no. 1 - blumaroo
Tumblr media
connie: HMMMM...well. it’s kinda deflated looking. it looks like it’s about to be bullied out of its lunch money. 5/10 for trying its best.
no. 2 - elephante
Tumblr media
connie:  those giant anime eyes are piercing my soul a little but that's okay. and i love creatures with impossibly small wings compared to their body. 6/10. me: personally i like the idea of adapting an elephant to punch, the natural solution to poaching connie:  yeah... teach elephants how to knock the sniper rifles out of their enemies hands
no. 3 - gnorbu
Tumblr media
connie: this smug little shit. this neopets fursona of taako adventure zone. not a fan. 2/10. me: this is the female...they gave it seductive eyes for some reason. not a fan of that. connie:  without bedroom eyes? 5/10
no. 4 - grrarl
Tumblr media
connie:  the color palette isn’t Great here but maybe that's my fault for picking yellow??? i can’t parse its emotions. angry? happy? realizing it left the oven on? 4/10 me:  it looks constipated connie: you figured it out! me:  or alternatively, this is how i feel when someone makes a triggered joke around me connie: just channelling the neopets dinosaur
no. 5 - grundo
Tumblr media
connie:  this... nasty little mucinex mascot. this virus from dr mario ass shit. i don't like it at all i’m sorry 1/10 me:  personally anything with its toenails out is a no from me dog. 1/10 also
no. 6 - jetsam
Tumblr media
connie: shark that Punch... a sassy lil friend. 7/10 me:  this is also a good way to fix shark poaching connie:  a shark just pumches a boat in half
no. 7 - jubjub
Tumblr media
connie:  HMMM..MM.MMMMMM. i.... don't like the feet. but i’m lost in its eyes..... me:  ...does it remind you of anyone connie:  it’s just a questionable hairy orb but that's Okay?? like... a weird hairy kirby?? idk
no. 8 - meerca
Tumblr media
connie:  no me: concise i like that connie:  it looks squished. its face is.... crooked. i want to send this squirrel to the hospital for its own good. 4/10.
no. 10 - tuskaninny
Tumblr media
connie:  Your Doing Your Best, Schweetie.....7/10. no, 8/10. me:  honestly i think we're seeing an extremely valid Neod Pet right here connie:  definitely!!! a cutie. 9/10!!!!!
no. 11 - nimmo
Tumblr media
connie:  I DON'T LIKE THEIR POSE... beckoning me to it... not a fan of human hands on a frog gotta say!!! 3/10 me:  excuse me this is the best neopet, slav squatting frog with human hands connie: and those eyes... it looks like it’s gonna prank me to hell and back and/or stab me.
no. 12 - poogle
Tumblr media
connie: this reminds me of... hold on
Tumblr media
connie: same energy me: it reminds me of
Tumblr media
connie: just an absentminded little pet tho. it may not know much or be great at things but it’s doing fine. 8/10 polite!!!
conclusion: tuskaninny is one of the most valid neopets, grundo is one of the least, stop putting faux-sexy eyelids on female pets and don’t turn your back on a nimmo. at least a poogle will be polite enough to announce it before it kills you.
if you’ve enjoyed this article, follow @millimallow for more posts in this series and @combocannon for more kirby content than you can shake a stick at.

i love how baby nimmos are tadpoles but baby quiggles are frogs already. its like those frogs in real life that hatch fully metamorphosed! nimmos and quiggles are just two different species of frog

Darigan: What is your least favorite neopet?
I don’t have a super least favorite, most of them are pretty cool, but maybe Nimmos?  And it’s not even really NIMMOS that I don’t like, I just don’t like frogs very much.  And I don’t even not like frogs because they’re FROGS, their texture is just very ick to me and I don’t like touching them.  So it’s, like, two or three levels of separation dislike lol.

The Winning Shots from Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019
Underwater Photographer of the Year has just announced the winners of its 2019 photo contest. Photographer Richard Barnden of the UK won both Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 and British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 for his photo titled “The Gauntlet” (shown above).
Here’s the description of Barnden’s winning shot:
As the sun sets on Fakarava South Pass, the estimated 700 sharks that are patrolling the mouth of the channel by day, begins to hunt at night. The gauntlet is about to unfold. Descending into the darkness I can feel my heart beating a little faster than normal as hundreds of sharks are now covering the bottom. This unlucky parrotfish dodged in and out of the patch coral heads looking for somewhere to hide as swarms of sharks followed in hot pursuit. One grey reef shark suddenly grabbed the parrotfish by its head as the another twisted underneath it to get a better grip. In desperation it hurtled straight towards me as I snapped a few passing shots and curled up into a ball as the frenzy of sharks shot past, leaving only but a few falling parrotfish scales behind.
Here are the other winning (and a couple of runner-up) photos from the major categories:
Up and Coming Winner: ‘Paradise’ by Taeyup Kim (Korea). Courtesy UPY2019.
